Minus points, PLZ,!! Very confusing experience… s. Multiple. I keep trying. Kicking myself in the butt every time… Closed at the mall? GASP! Between food, and service, there’s zero continuity. It’s crazy. I want to like them, but situations are odd. No one, supposedly, ever, available to speak with. Not a manager, «he» is never there. Really? Ever? NEVER. supposedly. How can u work with no one in charge? Scary. I order a sand with no onions, sure enough… full of onions. Can I get some spicy stuff? Sure, no prob, it comes with… Mostly, it does not. Got some jalapeños in my sand last time… very welcome surprise. Maybe lettuce comes, maybe not. Etc. The people that work there, FOH, seem to be kind enough, actually very sweet, as do the delivery personnel, which is why I tip as well as I do… 20% to ride a bike 2 blocks. Gr84 them, good 4 me 4 service. 845 pm… So now… Ordered an egg sand, no bacon, but plz give me an extra corn instead of a salad, or popper, or the cheese or the onion, Been doing it for years. Now it changed. No can do. OK, Fine, NP… gimme the sand, meat n chz OTS(on the side) so I can hand it out to someone downstairs,. and add an extra corn. Why??? I’ll pay for it, though it Makes no sense. Was willing to give up the bacon and cheese and mayo and onion in exchange for one extra corn, but it makes not sense to them. I order from them regularly… now, rethinking it. Before, when I ordered a Milanese sand, in store and delivery, the meat was sooooooooooo thin, When I called, they said it was made that way, on purpose, «chewy», the person said. Really? Like I never had a schnitzel or Milanese before. No meat… All breading and super, super gross. Premade for sure, probably frozen, then maybe refried or nuked. Or both. I keep trying. I want to like them, so much. Try again., maybe. Let’s see if the next order, arriving In about 20 mins. Looking forward to it… Ok, 930… just got my order. Kudos to them… The guy got to my front door. Upstairs! :)) Nice! Unusual and super cool. MINUS… after all the issues… got ZEROOOOOOOO corn,… Got side salad with a popper. Haven’t even looked at the sand yet… But, they DID charge me for the extra corn… which, along with the original, I did not receive… 930 pm… OMG!!! Checked… There’s bacon in the sandwich! WTF??? It was supposed to be OTS, with the chz… fine… …Just spoke to them… Said they’d be back with a replacement. I feel bad… seems to be an internal issue… Itmt, I’m super hungry… Said corn was on its way… Yaye! Exhausting„ n I’m hungry… So unpredictable,…Cheerios n milk for dinner? Gonna take A LOT to get me wanting to try this place anytime in the near future. So sad… They have many good points, ideas, food… execution is horribly horrible beyond belief. They have all the makings of an amazing local spot. 10:17… No replacement in site. Been a while. Not sure when they close. Gonna call the CC co, make sure I’m not getting charged for this BS. So, now it’s 1034… Called… Was told that they for sure gave me corn. I dunno, Looking, looking… looking. Yup, no corn in site. Besides that, offered, n now I’m told that the kitchen said for sure they got the corn in already. So, What is it I’m waiting then for exactly? The sands used to come in a square container. Tonight I got two small rectangular boxes… no place for corn to hide. Really? That’s the best part of their meal, and I DIDNOTRECEIVEIT. I hear the guy on the phone saying«what the f**k? She wants free food!» Seriously??? NO, what I would like is WHAT I ORDERED! &PAIDFOR, He said he wouldn’t call his cooks liars(guess I AM!)… GR8, no prob. I asked if the delivery guy check his order. Obviously NOT. I’ve worked both FOH and BOH, and delivery… and, U HAVETOCHECKBEFOREYOULEAVETHESHOP. The guy on the phone refused to think that his peeps may have just erred(hmmm, not human like the rest of us, I guess), but went so far as to insist that I’m just so desperate for not only 2 corn(the one that came with the meal and the extra I paid for), but that I would go out of my way to BEG for an EXTRATWO. So, now I’m going downstairs to give this bacon laded food, which I DID NoT order, to someone who may benefit from it. MORONS, Thought it was FOH, now it’s apparently a complete breakdown of a bunch of people who couldn’t give a flying f**k how they do. Probably just banking on a bunch of tourists flying thru, versus capitalizing on locals like myself who provide them with consistent business and referrals. Too bad :(. Cheeer-e-o-eo-eos for dinner are awesome

It’s unfortunate when a restaurant that makes good food can’t get their operation right because it totally gives a bad customer experience. We placed our order — I got the steak torta and my girlfriend got the chicken torta, both with a side salad. We waited… and waited… and waited for our food. There’s one cook making all the food. Since the food is made to order, I don’t usually mind the wait. However, I do when I end up with the wrong food! The servers had no idea which sandwich was which. She just gave me a random sandwich and I asked her, if it was the steak torta and she said yes. I really didn’t want to wait another 20 minutes for my sandwich so I just settled to eat it. While I was eating, another lady complained about getting the wrong torta.

This place is AMAZING! The stuffed jalapenos are my favorite. The service was great and speedy. Entire establishment is very clean. If you are here late at night on the weekend, expect long lines.

Awesome torta sandwiches! Lots of varieties, I have had the vegetable one and also the organic turkey sandwich which comes on regular wheat bread. Guys who work there are sweet and the processes jimaica is good enough!

Used the Eat24 app to order take out here around 4pm on a Saturday evening while in downtown so I could have a quick, healthy meal to bring home before hitting the gym later on. I ordered 2 Turkey Tortas on wheat bread with a choice of side veggies on both. I requested in my order that no mayo or cheese be added but upon the inspection at home both still had it on the Tortas. Oh well, simple peel off job and bun scrap took care of that. Each torta had sprouts, onion, lettuce, tomato, avocado, several slices of fresh smoked turkey breast and thick dense whole wheat buns. The veggie was steamed chopped broccoli, zucchini and carrots. I ended up eating BOTH orders given my crazy high calorie intake these days with my current training and even after that I felt pretty good as they food sat well with me. Perk of eating clean food that’s fresh and not processed. Portions were good to and at $ 9 an order not bad on the wallet either. My order was ready right on time when I arrived and the server at the counter was very polite and friendly. Seemed very happy I chose to make my debut visit and try there food out. Safe to say I’ll be back soon for more tortas!

Had some extra time before heading out to a Gaslamp walking ghost tour, so my boyfriend and I decided to grab an early dinner. Luckily, Bolillo was a street away from the meeting point for the ghost tour. I’ve never really tried tortas before but everything sounded amazing. I ordered the TORTACUBANA combo and my boyfriend ordered the CARNEASADA combo(NOTE: the combo comes with a side of your choice – we both chose the CORNONTHECOB with cheese and tajin). And of course, since we pretty much walked all of Coronado Island right before hitting this place – we were dying from starvation and dehydration – we had to order some beers(which probably dehydrates us more — hehehe). Anyways, the service was great. The host gave us some great suggestions on what to order since it was our first time there. The environment was very clean and the lighting was perfect. What was even more amazing was that with the combo, we each got a free BACON-WRAPPEDJALAPENO!!! Okay, first off, I was only able to finish half of my TORTACUBANA because I didn’t know it was going to be that big. The buns were great and the meat inside my torta along with the mustard sauce it came with made it all the greater. It did kind of get a little messy though with everything in the middle sliding around. My boyfriend was able to finish all of his CARNEASADATORTA and loved how it was packed filled with meat. He’s a big fan of the meat. What made me smile throughout the entire meal though was the CORNONTHECOB! It reminded me of the sellers who would go around my neighborhood and I would run down to them and buy some of their CORNONTHECOB. Soooo yummy. It had the natural sweetness of the corn, a hint of cheesiness, and a slight spice to it. Loved it! Sadly, I snapchatted my meal to all my friends but totally forgot to take a picture for my Unilocal review. No bueno. :(

Every once in a while, I get a hankering for a good torta. This time I wanted something in the breakfast realm, so I ordered the chorizo scramble torta with all the fixings with a side: a Mexican corn on the cob, followed by an agua fresca via a Unilocal check in.( ) The chorizo torta was very good and of an average size and came served on a nice fluffy moist Bolillo roll.( ) The torta came packed with all the ingredients, including th chorizo scramble which was good and had a slight spicy flavor. The avocado and cheese acted as a nice cooling agent against the chorizo and spicy jalapeño slices.( ) The avocado was just the right ripeness and creamy. A great torta. The corn was quite good as well. I loved that they packed it with cheese and dusted it with a spicy salt and red pepper.( ) The corn kernels were cooked perfectly and were crisp and popped in the mouth when you bit into them. Great corn, and I would definitely order it again. I forgot to mention, the meal also came with a small garnish in the form of a cheese stuffed jalapeño wrapped with grilled bacon.( ) The bacon was perfect, the cheese melted, and that jalapeño had quite the bite. Great stuff… Service was a little lack luster or disinterested. The individual who served me forgot my drink and utensils, but it was not a big deal. Fortunately, the food was great. Watch out for that Jalapeño! Mercy.

Just writing this review my mouth starts to salivate as I think of the slightly charred jalapeño filled to the brim with cheese and tenderly wrapped in a bacon blanket… and that’s just a SIDE! The tortas! A Dios mio! The tortas here are to-die-for! Torta cubana, pollo milanesa, carne asada, even the turkey. Heck, it’s all delicious especially because of the outstanding quality of the bread. All the drippings and juices from the meat and condiments just press into the bread just the right amount. Like a cilantro, cumin, pepper meat juice kiss! Alongside the previously mentioned jalapeño, the corn is delicious, and perfectly spiced. Salad was crisp and fresh — with just the right amount of dressing. Plus, the salsas on the side hit the spot. The last time I was here if you checked in on Unilocal you got a free agua fresco with your meal, so I picked horchata, which was a wonderful cool-down complement to the spicy food. Te quiero Bolillo Tortas! XOXO

I am completely satisfied with this place. The nopales salsa is like heaven. Everything is generously portioned. Even their house Chardonnay is among the best I have tasted it’s got a flowery after taste. The only thing is parking — downtown is always horrible. It might be worth it for Bolillo — they do have delivery, not sure about the distance though. I sit by the window, and the outlet was the savier for my laptop :)

I had a deal to use and happened to be in the neighborhood so i stopped in. It happened to be a cold day and I was hoping for some comforting food. The shop has a modern look but inviting feel. I would’ve eaten there but I needed to get back to work. Pretty extensive menu from what I remember. I should go back to try more items. What I ordered after getting recommendations from the friendly cashier lady: Frijole soup(never seen that on a menu before) and a carne asada torta with hazelnut cake for dessert. The soup was flavorful and I immediately knew I’d have it again. It was creamy and smooth, no chunks of beans which would’ve been fine, but it was just sooo smooth. I actually want some now. The carne was seasoned well but I can’t remember the whole torta experience. Bummer. Alas, I didn’t get to taste the hazelnut cake because I let it sit in the fridge too long. Shame on me for not stuffing myself when I had the chance! 3 stars is because I really don’t remember anything other than the soup so even though I remember the asada being seasoned well, I can’t speak on the tortas as a whole.

Quite possibly one of the top-10 best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten, without exaggeration. A few months ago I noticed a Groupon($ 7 for $ 14 of food) available for Bolillo Tortas. After reading scores of good things about this torta shop, I decided to grab it. Well, after an intense workout on Saturday morning, I decided to walk down to the Douchelamp and drop into Bolillo’s for lunch. Bolillo’s sports an impressive torta menu, so vast, in fact, that it was an extremely conflicting experience for this white boy to make a decision. After a thorough, welcoming explanation of the menu from the charming cashier, I finally settled on the Huevo con Chorizo Torta($ 7.50). The torta consisted of eggs, flavorful chorizo, and a layer of beans and cheese. Staggeringly delicious. I was in sheer heaven. The torta also came with a large roasted jalapeño pepper that was stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon. Needless to say, I annihilated that jalapeño. It was amazing. BUT there’s more! The torta also came with my choice of corn on the cob(that’s smothered in a sinful cheese) or a side salad. I have to admit that the corn cob was very tempting, but my guilt was already setting in so I opted for the side salad. I didn’t regret it. The salad consisted of greens, fresh apple slices and berries. Beyond flavorful! It was the perfect contrast to the salty rich goodness of the torta. To take full advantage of my Groupon, I also had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, bringing my total to a little over $ 13 for lunch, right within range of my $ 14 Groupon. Indeed, it’s above-average in cost for a sandwich, but considering the quality of the torta, the amazing sides, AND an alcoholic beverage, I think it was well worth it. Will I be back? Absolutely. Although, I learned a lesson: Do not to try and walk to the Douchelamp from my home in Little Italy when hypoglycemic.

Tasty, handcrafted sandwiches, at a reasonable price. Gloria Dios! First, every sandwich comes with corn on the cob as an option. This corn is slathered with butter and mexican cheese.(I’m drooling just thinking about it). It is the BOMB. Figuratively because it is so freaking delicious, but literally because the fat from this stuff currently lines and is expanding my heart arteries. Anyway, the corn is reason enough to go. I live downtown, so I go to the one in the Gaslamp. It’s really contemporary on the inside, and would honestly be good enough for a date or a large group. It’s a «pay first and seat yourself» kind of place, but they bring the food to you and bus your table for you. I order the Bolillo Torta with pineapple. I love the sweet and savory combo. However, I ask for it WITHOUT beans and mayo. I tried it once with the beans and it made the whole sandwich super soggy. No bueno. The horchata is delicious too. Oh, and on New Year’s Day, I had a house full of hungry(but very hung over) partiers. We wanted something tasty, but could not brave the outdoors. Bolillo delivers for free! That poor guy rode his bike through Banker’s Hill, but those sandwiches arrived piping hot! Way to go Bolillo. Thanks for bringing a little Mexican heaven to my doorstep.

There was an episode of Bizarre Foods where Andrew Zimmern tried a torta ahogada from a place south of downtown. This is not the place, but it inspired me to try an ahogada. I started with the Corn on the Cob and Stuffed Jalapeño Bacon Wrap. The grilled corn on the cob with cheese is one of those street foods found in Mexico and other surrounding countries. If you we’re to try this first, you probably wouldn’t order it at any other place. It just wasn’t good. It was cold and tasted old. It could tell that it had been cooked earlier and sat there. You didn’t get any of the grilled flavor, none of that beautiful char that the grill adds. Its probably because it was boiled and not grilled. The jalapeño though was better. It was nicely paired with its saltiness to the stuffed creaminess and not spicy. It also was barely warm and could have been hotter. Now what I came for was the Torta Ahogada: sourdough bolillo, carnitas, chile de Arnold sauce. The sauce is nicely prepared, nonspicy tomato base sauce. You can see in the picture the oil starting to bead on the surface. That makes it a little less attractive. The bread is hard but not stale and it demonstrates how it holds up against the sauce. The beef is tender, nicely shredded, just not enough on the sandwich.

Bolillo Tortas — the blingiest torta shop in town. Are you used to paying $ 4 for a torta at a hole-in-the-wall in Chula Vista? How about paying $ 9.50 at a gleaming«slow food served quickly”-style joint in the Gaslamp? The thought of having to spend a Hamilton to buy a freakin’ *torta* may give you whiplash, but Bolillo Tortas makes it worth it. When you buy a torta here, you get a giant platter of goodies that provide a full-fledged culinary experience. Take my recent visit, for example. I was in search of a quick but delicious dinner, and Bolillo quickly came to mind. I popped in, ordered a carne asada torta at the counter, sat myself on the lovely patio, and had my food within minutes.(Also — get a free agua fresca with your Unilocal check-in!) The torta itself was quite good, overflowing with succulent carne asada. If anything, there might’ve been *too much* carne asada, since the sauce soaked through the bread, turning the torta into an unstable and mushy(but delicious!) mess that was impossible to eat without a fork. What makes Bolillo Tortas shine are the complimentary sides. I loved the corn on a stick, covered in cheese and mayo. I also dug the cheese-stuffed jalapeño, which was wrapped in crispy bacon. If you’re not counting calories, you can order lots of extra sides at the counter, too. Bolillo Tortas is open late — 3am on weekends. As far as I can tell, it does most of its business with the late-night after-club crowd, but I think it’s a lot more enjoyable in the early evening, when the lines are nonexistent. I’ll definitely be back here sometime. It’s a pricey product, but the quality is definitely there.

I was visiting San Diego and wanted something to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and I stumbled upon Bolillo Tortas and stepped on in. Boy am I glad I did! The staff was beyond friendly and helpful and the food was out of this world. They kept forgetting to bring out our soup, but it’s ok because it gave us plenty of time to enjoy our amazing sandwiches. Just bring some napkins because some of these sandwiches are quite messy! I heard they’re going to expand so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they make their way north to Los Angeles so I can enjoy some great sandwiches in my hometown.

This place may have the next food craze. It may start replacing chipotles. The tortas are very tasty. They take their time in making the sandwiches. I was very glad that they served horchata to help cool the bacon wrapped jalopeno. The rice milk thing is not overly sweet and has a nice hint of cinnimon. We had lunch earlier in our visit here. I had the Al pastor and i forgot the others I’ve tried. The cheese corn is different and good. I’m not really a fan of sharp cheeses but the taaste was good to me. Co-workers and I ended had our last dinner here. Out of all the nice places in the Gaslamp we ended it here.
