Broadway/San Diego — A Nederlander Presentation is part of the nationally recognized Nederlander Producing Company of America — one of the country’s largest and most experienced operators of live theater.
In its 35-year history, Broadway/San Diego has presented over 325 shows and events, including the record-setting blockbusters The Phantom Of The Opera, Miss Saigon, The Producers (in its West Coast Première), Les Miserables, Disney’s The Lion King and Wicked.
History
Established in 1976.
Broadway/San Diego made its original debut as the «San Diego Playgoers» in 1976, after presenting Equus at the Spreckels Theatre in Downtown San Diego. For several years, San Diego Playgoers presented shows at the Fox Theatre (now Copley Symphony Hall) and the Spreckels, before establishing a permanent home at the San Diego Civic Theatre in 1986, with occasional presentations at the other venues.
In 2001, San Diego Playgoers celebrated 25 years of presenting the Best of Broadway by becoming Broadway/San Diego, and announced its largest season to date.
Meet the Business Owner
Jimmy M N.
Business Owner
The name «Nederlander» has been synonymous with great entertainment since 1912. A show business dynasty began when David T. Nederlander, in Detroit Michigan, purchased a 99-year lease on the Detroit Opera House. Over the next five decades, David and his sons, James M., Robert, Harry, Joseph and Fred, built and/or managed theatres, produced dozens of live shows and presented hundreds of the top headliners of the day – establishing Detroit as the most successful theatre-town in America.
In 1964, James M. Nederlander moved to New York City and purchased the Palace Theatre on Broadway. His hard work, pioneering spirit and vision enabled him to build one of the largest privately held live entertainment companies in the world today.
Now celebrating its 100th anniversary, The Nederlander Organization, led by James L. Nederlander, President, continues the tradition of operating historic theatre, as well as producing and presenting the best in theatrical entertainment.
