History

Established in 2001.

Returning to Southern California in 2001, he has gone on to create La Jolla Neurosurgical Associates, AMC. The practice is run through a new state of the art central office on the Scripps Memorial Campus, adjacent to the hospital where Dr. Coufal serves as Medical Director of Neurotrauma and Neurosurgical Emergency Services. His group in fact, since 2004, has provided exclusive neurosurgical emergency services for Scripps Memorial Hospital, and has led the way in bringing new technology to bear for the treatment of head trauma, skull base tumors, and spinalinjuries. At the same time, Dr. Coufal has been a QME (qualified medical examiner) since 2002 and continues to provide spinal surgical services for a workmen’s compensation referral network extending from Los Angeles and Orange Counties to San Diego.

He lectures and instructs nationally on the new field of minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques. He’s participated, and continues to participate in important clinical procedures

I saw Dr. Coufal for my pituitary adenoma (2.6 cm). He was so knowledgeable, patient, kind and answered all of my questions. He successfully performed the endoscopic transphenoidal adenoma resection surgery with Dr. Ritvik Mehta and I am so happy with the results. My recovery has been amazing and Dr. Coufal and his office have been so supportive and attentive to my needs and questions post-​surgery. His office staff is very kind and helpful.
I highly recommend Dr. Coufal and am so glad to be in his and his office’s care.

This doctor’s associate, Dr. John Barr gave me Adhesive Arachnoiditis by doing a spinal epidural injection. PLEASE BEWARE Spinal Epidural Injections are not FDA approved and were intended for knee and elbow joints only! Do your research. The dangerous chemicals inside the syringe DO NOT belong near a spinal cord and especially not INSIDE YOUR SPINAL CORD. But that is exactly where he injected me INSIDE my spinal cord. I am now permnantly disabled, lost my job that was heading toward 6 figure income. Now living on disability and fighting Medi-​Cal to try and get proper treatment and medication from a specialist who knows how to handle Intracable Pain (Pain 24⁄7) and spinal cord injury. My life is now a bed, couch or wheelchair. A living hell of horrific pain. I will die prematurely from this and I was a very athletic and active person prior to seeing these two. Please watch on youtube this alarming video. This is what Dr. Barr did to me under the direction of Dr. Frank Coufal. Prior to finding out what I had, I went to emergency by ambulance 3 times because Coufal would not see me, too busy, in surgery, no room for appointments. His staff is extremely rude and when I told one little girl I was out of critical medication he did not get refilled for me prior to leaving out of the state, she said, «we don’t give out medication like it’s Candy and used my name! PLEASE EVERYONE, ANYONE THINKING OF A SPINAL EPIDURAL INJECTION– DON’T! Especially from this doctor.

Also try to find a doctor’s office that has mature, professional and courteous staff to assist you. Red flag if they don’t.

Dr. Coufal is a very knowledgeable and caring doctor. I was having debilitating lower back pain for the past 2 years from a fall, and I was really scared of having back surgery. Dr. Coufal was very patient with me. When the appointment was made for the surgery, he listened and answered all my questions thoroughly, and put me at ease. It’s been 7 months since my surgery. I am ecstatic with the results! Every day I wake up with a big smile on my face because I can now do everything with no back pain!
Dr. Coufal’s office staff was always very friendly and kind when making appointments, returning my calls, and taking care of any issues that came up. I feel so truly blessed to have been in their care. Thank you, thank you, so much for everything Dr. Coufal! I now have my life back!

After waiting months for an appointment I got a call from the office employee, Kathy. She arrogantly told me that this doctor could not see me because the doctor had decided to schedule a patient for surgery. Although Thursday is his surgery day he decided to do this surgery on Friday, April 12, the day I was scheduled. This was not a life threatening surgery since it was weeks ahead. When I agreed to take another date she hung up on me. I called back in and spoke to her about hanging up on me (she even knew my name) she said «hold on,» never coming back to the phone. Nor did she attempt to call me back.
Why would any patient want to be considered as low priority? IMO he should be looking for another employee who can work professionally in his office instead of damaging his business.

Dr Coufal treated my wife for Glioblastoma Multiforme. Dr. Coufal was on-​call when my wife came to the ER; he promptly diagnosed her condition, and performed an all-​day surgery 2 days later with his team. He’s listed as one of Oprah’s Miracle Men for good reason. His skillful work set the stage for post-​op therapy which in total extended her life — more than 10 times the expectation. At followup office visits he spend all the time needed to explain MRIs and give all the information we needed.
