Elite Event: Duck Foot Brewing Company

San Diego is definitely one of the top cities for craft breweries. Launching this past June, Duck Foot Brewery joins the legion of local craft beer companies, but they have a very unique trait. All of their beers are gluten free.
This was a great event and a great opportunity to try their product and hear about the inspiration behind their company and their beer brewing process.

Going to Unilocal events is always a great time, but lately, being able to attend has become a rare treat since we moved across town and had a newborn addition to the family much sooner than we expected.
Duck Foot Brewing Co provided the beverages and Chef Billy Burd along with his team from Four Seasons Foods Catering brought the delicious snacks. From tray passed appetizers to food and beer pairings, we had an opportunity to check out Duck Foot core beers and a variety of fantastic bites. While all were tasty, I particularly enjoyed the grilled fish tacos and the bacon wrapped shrimp.
The on-​site brewery tour was neat. Brief and informative. I had no idea that a gluten reduced beer even existed until recently. I thought something like fat-​free or sugar-​free products also translated to flavor-​free and this would be some mock beer novelty. Duck Foot beer is good on its own merits, and not in the sense of, «Hey, it’s pretty good for GF beer.» I did end up bringing home a growler of the Cali Honey Ale and shared it the next evening. It was such a hit that I returned a few days later for a growler refill. As with other local brewery tasting rooms, pricing will vary to the beer style. Duck Foot offers tasters, half, and full pints, as well as 32oz and 64oz growler fills, all reasonably priced.
Thank you to the friendly folks from the evening’s food and beverage teams for such a fun evening. I have already been back to the brewery since the Event and will return again with friends.

Thank you to CM Brad and intern Sandra, our super San Diego duo, for planning and organizing another awesome Unilocal Elite Event. The Rescue Recharger portable cell phone battery is my new favorite swag bag item. Its Unilocaly style and compact size (slightly larger than a Unilocalstick or lipstick case) is conveniently small, yet packs enough punch to keep your favorite mobile device powered up for a bit longer. I’m sad to say that this was my last Unilocal San Diego event, as I’m in the process of moving. So, first off, thanks to the wonderful Unilocal Elite group for making me feel like part of your family during my first six months of being Elite up here!
I like how this Unilocal Elite event was organized, in that the entire group was split into three different sections and the night proceeded as such. The three «rotations» included learning more about the brewery (straight from the founder himself); a beer tasting; and a tour of the actual brewery. It was really insightful to learn more about the brewery’s history/​how it got started, since all the beers are gluten-​free; since I know more about the business, all that info will come in handy when mentioning it to others.
Much thanks to the Duck Foot Brewing staff, as well as Brad B. and Sandra for planning another fun event. Such a great idea to get the Duck Foot name out there, especially since they’ve only been open for about a month! I’ve really enjoyed every single Elite event I went to, and hopefully I’ll be back to visit soon.
Here were some of the delicious eats from the evening:
«Mahi Fish Tacos»: I have to admit, I have a weakness for fish tacos because they’re usually pretty light and I love fish. These mahi fish tacos had to be one of my favorites from the cuisine offered during the evening. The fish tasted fresh and flavorful, and these light bites were easy to eat.
«Porter»: I don’t/can’t drink much beer, but I think my favorite one included in the flight was the Porter since it featured a more chocolaty flavor. No surprise that it was my favorite, since that was considered the «dessert» beer and paired with a delicious chocolate truffle. But I considered ordering an actual glass of this one because I liked the flavor so much. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a dessert beer.
«Marco Polo Potstickers»: I can’t remember why this potsticker was called «Marco Polo,» but it was a winner to me because it included blue cheese, mushrooms and goat cheese. Blue cheese and goat cheese have to be two of my favorite cheeses, so these little savory morsels were truly love at first bite.
«Pancetta-​Wrapped Shrimp»: When it comes to seafood, shrimp has to be one of my favorites, and these pieces were succulent and tasty. They didn’t skimp, in terms of size! Definitely enjoyed the flavor and crunch.
«Chocolate Truffle»: I love chocolate, so this was the perfect sweet ending to the food. I loved the sultry taste of the dark chocolate truffle, which complemented all the savory foods that I enjoyed all evening.

So cool to have an elite event at a brewery! Shout outs to the Unilocal MGMT! So gangster, wow, love it!
Duck Foot Brewing is known for producing gluten reduced beers. Brilliant for people who have gluten issues.
I will always praise organization whenever I see it and with this event (like most events) it was perfect. Upon arrival we were each given a number, 1, 2 or 3, which determined which group we were in. Then each group was assigned to a station.
Station 1:
An informal yet informative speech given from the owner on why he created a brewing company specializing in gluten reduced beer. Why? To allow people with gluten allergies (like himself) to enjoy a nice craft beer without the added affects of gluten intolerance. Pretty cool? People with celiacs disease can now enjoy beer!

I was so impressed by this beer. I couldn’t even notice the lack of gluten. Well done. My favorite was the Red Ale — super refreshing with great flavor and a good buzz haha.
Station 3:
We got a tour from the brewmaster who brought us through the brewing process. The most interesting aspect of this tour was how they create such a low gluten content in their beers. Answer? There is a special enzyme that is added near the end of the brewing process that breaks the gluten molecule and basically neutralizes the beer. Genius!
I had such a great time at this event. It was super informative and very interesting. Thanks Unilocal MGMT! Well done!

Duck Foot Brewery is a fantastic name for this delightful brewery. Easy to remember, easy to pronounce, and just plain fun!
I attended a Unilocal Elite Event here a couple of nights ago and had a really great time. Upon arrival, we were treated with some pretty cool swag by our very only Sandra M., Unilocal intern extraordinaire! A Unilocal beer glass, sweat band, beer top opener, and a little Unilocal Elite Rescue Recharger in its own little box. Thanks, Sandrita, for this great stuff!
But this party was about how the BEER and the FOOD! We certainly had plenty of both. The evenings tastes and sips began with some outstanding tray passes from the event food caterer, Four Seasons Foods. We had delights such as Seared spiced ahi with a mango mint salsa on endive, Caprese skewers drizzled with garlic balsamic vinaigrette, Carne asada skewers with chimichurri, Grilled fish tacos with shredded cabbage on a warmed corn tortillas, Crostini with Shredded duck confit, killer Jumbo shrimp wrapped with basil and pancetta, Pot stickers with Portobellos, and the most amazing little Dark chocolate truffles.
The BEER — I think that everybody was in agreement that the beers were as good or better than any other craft brewery offerings, and my favorite, the Chocolate Hazelnut Porter was truly outstanding. My second favorite of the night was the Cali Blonde, which left just the right amount of aftertaste and was really refreshing after downing a couple of those tasty porters. I’m not a big IPA fan, but even I could appreciate the «hoppiness» their Double IPA provided. I didn’t care that much for the Red Ale or the West Coast IPA, but others at the bar certainly liked those a lot.
Not only did we get plenty of great food and drink (there was lots left over because we were so stuffed), but we got to tour the brewery, learn about how «reduced gluten» beer was made, and chat with one of the owners, Matt, who seemed keenly interested in what Unilocal Elites were all about. I really think that they have a big future at Duck Foot — I’m excited to see how they blossom in the months and years to come.
A huge thanks to Brad, Sandy, Matt, and the entire staff of the Duck Foot Brewery. I will definitely be back!

My, I totally loved this event. It was awesome to learn so much about the brewing process and to get some one on one time with Matt. He answered so many questions and was inspiring to talk to. I loved hearing about his rise into creating this brewery. It was definitely the best part of the event.
The first station I went to was the tasting. This was awesome because all of the beers matched perfectly with the food pairings. The best pair in my opinion was the cheyenne truffle with the porter. So delicious. The surf and turf egg roll was also delicious. I felt like we needed a little more time for the tasting because I felt it was kind of rushed and I ended up tipsy a little too fast. Ha ha
The second station was the brewery tour and I learned so much about the process. It was very interesting to learn how they eliminated so much of the gluten in the beer without it changing flavor. Very educational.
I also loved mingling with everyone. Of course it’s always good to see Brad and Sandra. I also got to mingle with Lesley and Sabrina. Oh and Cesar! Everyone loves his photo technique. Thanks Brad and Duck Foot for a great event. I definitely want to bring my friends by to try some of the delicious beer!

We had 5 pairings and although the bacon wrapped shrimp was amazing, I have to say the blonde beer with the deep fried fish taco and the Porter with that amazing chocolate truffle stayed with me.
The duckfoot ipa and double ipa ate the ONLY ipa I can say I actually love. And the steamed dumpling/​wonton paired with it was so great! The catering company, Four Seasons, must make their own!
After this, I’d highly recommend this duckfoot Brewery and four seasons catering, to anyone!
Brad B. You’ve done it again! Awesome event!

I guzzled a rich Chocolate Hazelnut Porter and a beautiful Red Ale at the Duck Foot Brewing Company. If you think you’ve tried a Chocolate Porter anywhere else… you’ve been quacking in the wrong pond! The crafty brews at Duck Foot include the best porter and red ale that I’ve had in San Diego. And, surprise, surprise… even though these beers start with grains like barley, rye, wheat, etc… they are safe for celiacs due to the addition of a gluten reducing enzyme that breaks down the gluten protein chain. «All our brews test below 20 parts per million or we dump it,» says Matt, the owner, a snow boarder and craft beer enthusiast who is also a celiac.
Enough science. I’m not a celiac, and I eat lots of gluten. I’m always looking for a great porter, or stout, and I’m very impressed with this new brewing company. I’m already planning a return visit to this friendly brewery. They also have IPA’s, but I’m not an IPA gal.
This is one of the best YEE’s I’ve attended. So organized! We were divided into 3 groups, which allowed us to tour the brewery with Derek the master brewer, to chat with Matt the owner and ask questions, and to be spoiled with beer tastings which were paired with gourmet bites, prepared by Four Seasons Foods Catering. The entire staff was exceptional.
If our CM, Brad B, hadn’t told us these craft beers were gluten reduced, I would never have known. In fact, most customers probably don’t realize it, as they are just looking for a great beer in a friendly, laid-​back atmosphere.
Brad B hits another home run with this YEE! I’m so grateful to be included amongst our welcoming San Diego Elites, who are fun yeoples with good taste. Thank you, Matt, for the wonderful introduction to your outstanding brewery!
Duck Foot Brewing Company is near Miramar Rd. Although they don’t serve food, the owner says there are lots of ways you can have a meal with your beer, as there are often food trucks, and also some nearby places that deliver. Our event was catered, but I’m not sure how often they use caterers.
Did I forget to mention the awesome fish tacos and other bites prepared by Four Seasons Foods Catering? (-; Ahhhh, I think I’m still in a lovely chocolate haze…

We had Duck Foot going UP… ON A TUESDAY!
A blast was had by all those lucky enough to be a part of a cool event at a unique place like Duck Foot Brewing.
There are over a 100 breweries in SD, what makes this one so special? It’s Gluten Free! (well technically Gluten Reduced, because it’s still derived from gluten products that have had an enzyme added to make it «gluten free»). You wouldn’t know it just by tasting the beer though.
I’ve had my share of beers and these particular beers didn’t have a funky taste or anything off putting. The enzyme used in the gluten reducing process is colorless, odorless, and tasteless… Sounds like «Iocane Powder» if you’re familiar with The Princess Bride, but this won’t kill you! Haha. It’s actually a saving grace for folks with an intolerance to the regular stuff. Let them have beer too!
We were placed into three different groups to make it easier to experience everything. My group had the familiar faces of Lesley M. & Heihachiro K. I had the Red Ale as we embarked on the first part of the event, the brewery tour.
After we got a closer look at the kettle and storage tanks we made our way over to hang out with the owner Mike. He told us about how it was his dream to open up a brewery and when his own health issues arose, he found a way to keep his dream alive and produced quality craft beer that’s gluten reduced.
After hearing Mike’s story, it was time for us to move to the final station: the beer and food pairings. Oh baby!
We all sat up at the bar where we were able to sample their 5 core beers: the blonde ale, red ale, west coast IPA, Double White IPA, and a chocolate hazelnut porter. The food that was paired up with these fine beers was courtesy of Four Seasons catering. There was a Blonde beer battered fish taco, duck confit, a prosciutto wrapped prawn, a blue cheese & mushroom potsticker, and a chocolate truffle. We had a couple other passed food items earlier in the evening, among them was a New York strip skewer, a caprese skewer, and a grilled taco that was truly one of the most delicious fish tacos I’ve had. If you know me, you know fish is not really my thing, but Wow! Props on the grilled fish taco, delish!
Throughout the night I caught up with some other awesome elites like Mel J, Jack M, James K, Cathleen F, Christine G, Cesar C, Sunny L, Stephanie V & Steffanie R, Emy M, Kimmy Y, & Julie K.
The owner Mike, and the brewmaster Derek, were personable and informative and their entire staff was friendly and helpful. I’ll will be recommending Duck Foot to anyone I know in search of a good pint of gluten reduced beer.

So many great things about this event, I’m not sure where to even start! I guess the best thing about this is that I found out about a new brewery close to home!
First, this place is awesome. They have plenty of parking spots outside and the indoors are nice and spacious. We were greeted by our lovely host Brad who always puts on such great events *thanks Brad! We had our pick of their gluten-​free beer: Cali Blonde, Red Ale, West Coast IPA, Double IPA, and their Porter. I’m not really sure what I expected from gluten-​free beer but I can honestly say, I can’t tell the difference! It tastes just like I expected it to! DELICIOUS. We also had the opportunity to just get a taste of the delicious food that would be coming out. The lovely and friendly servers of Four Seasons were walking around with southwestern surf and turf eggrolls with avocado salsa (SO GOOD) as well as seared spiced ahi tuna on an endive or on a chip. It just left me craving more!
We split into 3 groups and my group started off with the brewery tour! Perfect way to get started: see the grains turn into delicious liquid to my lips! Our tour guide was Brett who is actually the head person overseeing the fermentation and brewing process. The tour was very insightful and it’s so great to see someone so passionate about their brewing! He discussed how and what enzyme is used to make the beer gluten-​free and how they have to send it to labs to make sure it’s actually FDA gluten-​free beer.
Next, we got to chat with the owner, Matt! He seems so humble and grateful to be realizing his dream of opening a brewery! He was diagnosed with Celiac disease and provided a lot of insight as to how much they have to be aware of what they’re eating and drinking-​something I had no idea about! During our chat, we were able to fill our stomachs with a bit of solid food from Four Seasons food catering. They had caprese skewers with fresh mozzarella and the garlic balsamic vinaigrette was refreshing. Next they had the grilled fish tacos-​large chunks of fresh halibut-​melt in your mouth deliciousness. Lastly, they had carne asada skewers which were cooked to a perfect medium so the meat was juicy and tender.
The last station was the TASTING STATION! The lovely team from Duck Foot Brewing set up tasters for all of us and the lovely team from Four Seasons provided tasty apps to go along with the tasting! Prime definition of team work! With the Blonde, we got fried fish tacos which was made from sea bass. With the Red Ale, we got a crostini with shredded duck confit. For the West Coast IPA, we paired it with jumbo shrimp wrapped in basil and pancetta-​WOW. For the White IPA, we got potstickers filled with portobello mushrooms, gorgonzola, and goat cheese-​can i get seconds?! Lastly for the porter, we got the dark chocolate truffles.
Overall this event was so much! The food was fantastic and it was great to learn about this new brewery (they only opened earlier this month!). Their whole team was so friendly that I feel like I’m part of them. I can really say that I am proud and impressed with them that having only been open for a month, they’ve already started to expand and even have their beer being served in restaurants! I look forward to many more experiences here!

I’ve never heard of Duck Foot Brewing Company before until I learned about this event. And I learned that they are one of the newest additions to San Diego.
They aren’t just some random new brewing company… they have a great story to share! I can tell that they are passionate about their brewing techniques and their skill to make gluten free beer!
I’m pretty sure that there are many people out there who wish they could get a hold of gluten free beer. But who am I to say, because I’m almost not even sure what gluten is. Hahaha…
Nonetheless, the beer was wonderful.
I especially enjoyed the Chocolate Hazelnut Porter. Usually most chocolate beers that I’ve tasted, has this strong coffee or dark chocolate kind of flavor, but this one was super smooth and didn’t make my face scrunch up.
I also loved the red ale. It had a very unique flavor, not too strong, not too light, very smooth as well. And both the chocolate hazelnut porter and red ale are available on nitro !
THE IPA’s were strong and the ales were light. They were decent.

As for the Four Seasons Foods Catering, i absolutely loved everything!!!
From the steak kabob sticks, gluten free halibut tacos, bacon wrapped shrimp, mushroom bleu cheese stuffed fried dumpling and the chocolate truffles.
I loved how this event had a pairing of each food item and drink!
And it was really cool how we were in groups and rotated to each station for a special treat!
And I’d like to add on that it was my very first beer tour!!! A mini one but its cool.

This was an outstanding event thrown by the Legendary B-​Rad in collaboration with the awesome folks at Duck Foot Brewing Company. I guess it took a cool new brewery to get me back into the swing of things after a hiatus from some of these events. Actually it’s just been scheduling conflicts but I’m glad I didn’t miss this one.
Why?
First of all, do you like beer? Do you like craft beer? If the answer was «no» to either of these questions (and especially the second one), then you shouldn’t be here. However, if you answered «yes» to any of those questions, then you came to the right place. Not only was there beer… ahem…great beer, but there was also food… ahem…great food, provided by Chef Billy Burd & the staff at Four Seasons Catering.
I started with the West Coast IPA as soon as I sat down. It was excellent, I was impressed. What else is impressive is the fact that if you hadn’t told me, I never would have known it was essentially gluten free (technically by FDA regulations it can’t be called «Gluten Free» but for all intents and purposes, it basically is) which is something that I could never say about anything else labeled «gluten free».
Now I’m with Nick B. on this one, like most people, I don’t suffer from any food allergies or intolerance so the whole Gluten Free things is for the most part, a fad thing to me. However…
There’s something special about Duck Foot Brewing Company. Duck Foot is a Godsend for people who suffer from Celiac Disease. Duck Foot’s owner, Matt, who loves craft beer, suffers from Celiac Disease. Instead of throwing in the towel on one of the things that he loved, Matt decided to do something about it. He utilized a process to almost entirely eliminate any trace of gluten from his beer and yet still preserve the delicious taste in craft beer that everybody loves. However, he didn’t just stop there and keep it for himself. Matt not only decided to bring some outstanding beer to people who would otherwise have some very lousy options available to them but he also managed to keep it so that gluten tolerant craft beer lovers such as myself would still love love it… and if you didn’t tell us it was essentially gluten free, we wouldn’t be the wiser.
Anyway, that’s what I learned. It’s a pretty impressive story, process and product. As a craft beer lover, I was extremely impressed with Duck Foot and the overall event in general.
Additionally, I really wasn’t expecting the food to be as good as it was either. Talk about another surprise winner! There wasn’t as single disappointing food item from Four Seasons but I was actually really blown away by the Fish Tacos and Surf & Turf Eggrolls, oh and the truffles.
All that aside, it was definitely a lot of fun to see all my friends here enjoying the beer and having as much fun as I was. «Good times» would definitely be considered an understatement.
Anyway, a million thanks to B-​Rad, the entire team at Duck Foot Brewing and the staff at Four Seasons Catering. This was definitely a laid back, informative as well as really fun event. I hope to attend more of these in the future!

What a fun filled night! Who knew gluten free beer could taste so good?! Thanks to the guy who discovered that enzyme which breaks down the gluten protein strand, Duck Foot can now produce GF beer in the traditional fashion. Now if only someone could figure out a way to give me the enzyme to break down alcohol so i wouldn’t get the «Asian Glow» LOL!
But seriously, the beer is tasty, my favorites were the Chocolate Hazelnut Porter and the Red Ale. The Red was very complex, smoky and had a nice finish, not bitter at all. Not an IPA guy, but the IPA wasn’t bad, the double IPA was too hoppy for me.
The food provided by 4 seasons was delicious! Both of the tacos were my favorites! The fried taco was out of this world! Loved the light crispy batter! So good! The grilled taco was awesome too all locally sourced including the halibut! I also loved the pancetta wrapped shrimp, it paired great with the Red Ale! Oh yeah how could i forget the Shrimp and Chorizo egg rolls! Phew those were D-​lish!
Service was friendly and what i liked most about the event was «brewery tour» aspect of it! I liked learning about the brewing process and how that enzyme breaks down the gluten strands to produce their beer. I also liked talking to Derek the brew master about the different type of hops and malts that go into each beer to create each type of beer. I feel i learned a lot about beer in general but more importantly the IBUs (bitterness scale). I feel like now i can choose beers that are more to my liking instead of just guessing or having to ask.
I also liked talking with the owner and founder Matt, he’s very personable and easy to talk to. As a fellow snowboarder i thought it was pretty awesome that the company is named after Matts, snowboard stance, Duckfoot; meaning both feet turned outward, Just like me! LOL!
Thanks Brad, Sandra, Matt, 4 seasons and Duck foot staff for putting on such a great event! I had a blast and I’m sure everyone else did too!

Another great night planned by Brad! I always come to the events with no expectations. That’s just me. I prefer not to know what to expect. I’d rather be surprised and delighted. Brad never disappoints.
I carpooled with the fantastic Sunny L. I arrived in a great mood. We were able to socialize for a bit after checking in, then we divided in three groups, I ended up in a group with Sabrina K who I met at the last event, yay! Also in our group was Heihachiro K who was also pretty fun. That face he made after downing the blue cheese won ton was priceless. Sabrina convinced me to try it anyway and I ended up loving it.
I didn’t try too much of the food, I ate before we came. I did however fall in love with the duck confit. I could’ve eaten a lot more of that if offered! It was perfectly presented and paired with the Duck Foot beer. I loved that they used the beer in the confit too. It was just so delicious, but then I’m biased, I love duck in any manner or form. The truffles were also nicely paired with the porter. I enjoyed that one too. Mel J had told me that was her favorite, so I was especially excited to try it.
Before the tour I had tried West Coast IPA and really enjoyed it. It came highly recommended by the employees, it didn’t disappoint. After the tour by Derek, we stopped at the bar for another beer before going to hear Matt talk. I got the Red Ale, this too was delicious.
We sat down at a table with Matt and he explained the business and how and why he does what he does. This was probably the best part of the night. I mean, I of course always enjoy the socializing, but I really enjoyed hearing his passion for his business. I thought it was ideal that we were seated at a round table and he was so approachable. He was telling me that they have food trucks outside nearly everyday and he gave me his email address.
I really enjoyed the beer. I liked that it tastes like other beers and just happens to be gluten reduced. I certainly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, but now I know where to point everyone that has gluten allergies from now on! I’ll definitely be back for more of the beer. The brewery here is nice, there’s plenty of seating and pricing is good, especially considering the extra process they use to remove glutens. I’m a fan :-)

I don’t think a Beer Brewing was ever on the Elite Event status and glad to see one on there because I’m a huge SD Craft Beer supporter and fan. This event was one of a kind and I’m glad that more breweries are deciding to hold Unilocal Events. As everybody knows, SD is the «Napa Valley» for beers and have a lot to live up to. I’m not big on going to Miramar (just because it’s far from me and I rather go to NP) but I will make a brewery hoping up there soon.
Duck Foot is a new brewery in SD that serves gluten reduced beers. They can’t call it gluten free because the ingredients are still made from gluten products… so gluten reduced is a good way around. I couldn’t tell the difference with the gluten part, so it means it’s good and it tasted just like real beer. This event was a bit different as it had stations (1,2,3) for the official brewery tour and history. I thought it was pretty clever.
Station 1: A one on one conversation with the owner. You get to learn about how he decided to make it «gluten reduced», the name, his partners, his stories, and even his dog story on opening day. It was cool as the owner was very mellow.
Station 2: Sample tasting of their beers with food pairings. They have Blonde Ale, Red Ale, West Coast IPA, Double IPA, Stout. I forgot what paired with each but I remember there was a duck crostini, chocolate truffle (porter), bacon basil shrimp, blue cheese and mushroom potsticker, fish tacos, beef skewers, and caprese sticks. My favorite beer was the blonde and I normally don’t like stouts but this stout was really good! It had a sweetness to it and didn’t taste like soy sauce (like most stouts). The fish tacos were awesome and so were the beef skewers!
Station 3: Actual tour and brewing process. Now you don’t have to take the tour and just come here for drinks!
I really wished I bought that artwork, but I totally forgot. The décor of the place is modern and have cool wall art. I’m glad Brad held this event because it actually put Duck Foot on the radar for me. I will be coming back to grab a couple of drinks. Thanks to Brad, Sandra and the owners for hosting such a cool event.

A brewery in D6! YES PLEASE!!! Thanks Brad for having the event in my fiancée’s district! We are on a mission to meet with each brewery in D6 and we definitely cannot miss this one.
I arrived fashionable late and was quickly shown the way. I began with a tasting flight of beers and some mini bites to pair with the beers. The beers were really tasty and I enjoyed how the employees came out to describe the food and what paired well with each of the beers.
Next we were taken on a tour of the brewery. Wow, impressed with the amount of spacing they have. I wouldn’t have thought! The equipment is new and our tour was very descriptive.
I spoke with Matt and Brett who were the owners and they were super nice and very inviting. In fact all the staff were very personable and helpful. I love their check on offer! Haha!!!
It was great to see some the usual elites and I got to meet a couple new faces. We got some new swag which was awesome!!!
I found out that food trucks frequent this brewery pretty much on a daily basis. SCORE!!! I need food with my beer so glad they were able to get a variety of trucks to stop by.
Love the décor and space! There’s actually tables you can sit at and chairs at the bar and around the brewery. Finally another brewery where you don’t have to bring your own chairs or have very limited chairs.
Glad this place made it to the Miramar area and is close to home! Prices for tastings are very comparable and they sell growlers.
Will definitely be back with the fiancée and his D6 staff!!!

My first time here but certainly not my last. San Diego is certainly the greatest city when it comes to breweries and this new addition just goes to prove that point. But this isn’t just «any» new brewery, they actually bring something new… gluten free beer! I don’t personally have a problem with gluten but it is a common problem and if you suffer from this disorder, well it’s time to celebrate because there is a beer here for you!
Located in an industrial park area of town, they have combined the feeling of the brewery with open beer vats to view along with a large tasting area. This evenings event was split up into groups. Our first stop this evening was to get a brief lesson on their brewing process as we were taken behind the scenes. Then we met with one of the founders and given a bit of history of the company and finally, the best part of our evening, were each given a flight of beers to sample!
I started with the Duck Foot Red; nice color and you can definitely taste the toffee and brown sugar. On to the California Blonde Ale and I have to say I wasn’t very impressed. It’s not a bad beer, but too flat for me. Then to the California Honey Ale which was nicer. Not much bite to it, but pleasant to drink. Refreshing. Finally I tried the Double IPA which hands down was the best beer for me. And this isn’t saying it was the best beer at this brewery… I mean it was one of the best beers I’ve had in San Diego! To put it another way, I bought a growler of the Double IPA. Now, for some I know that is saying something, but for all others who might be skeptical, I would like to add that I have never bought a growler anywhere… ever!
Something else I can say about their beer is even after having a flight of beers and two full pints, I don’t feel heavy. Is it the gluten free? I don’t know but I can say that I don’t have that typical really heavy feeling when leaving a brewery.
Now, it wasn’t all just beer. They served many small sides from blue cheese pot stickers, to fried fish tacos, to veggie rolls with an amazing avocado sauce. There were also cherry tomatoes with little mozzarella cheese balls and balsamic vinegar drizzled over the top. So many great eats that were paired up with the beers. There was a delicious dark chocolate paired with the Porter beer that was absolutely amazing!
It’s great to have another fantastic brewery here in San Diego and for me, one that is pretty close. I was so pleased that I bought a growler, something I’ve never done before and I look forward to coming back here again and bringing my friends with me.

What the heck! How come I didn’t feel the buzz when I was at the event but immediately when I get home, I feel it. I have to admit, I was a little iffy about what Gluten-​Free beer tastes like. I once was eating gluten-​free for a few months but then my tastebuds begged me to stop because they missed the deliciousness of what wheat has to offer. So, I know what «gluten-​free» means and I know what «gluten-​free» tastes like… it tastes like paper and cardboard. However, Duck Foot Brewing Company miraculously made gluten-​free taste pretty darn good! I almost couldn’t taste the difference with the blondie that I tried tonight.
The vibe of this place is pretty cool. I can see myself with a bunch of friends just chilling here on a lazy afternoon and hanging out with the owners and staff. Matt, one of the owners, was really great at explaining the history of the place to us. Our brewery tour gave us the inside scoop as to how they make beer! I just love that this brewery doesn’t smell like yeast. When I tour major breweries in California, the entire city block smells like yeast. For me, that smell is not pleasant. Duck Foot is free of a yeast-​smelling atmosphere so I can hang out there from opening to close and my nose won’t be disturbed.
The food tonight was delicious as well! I particularly liked the Caprese skewers and the fish tacos (both fried and grilled)! Four Seasons Catering is such a great job at keeping the tables and serving trays stocked!
We are such spoiled Unilocalers! Thank you Brad, Sandra, and Duck Foot Brewing Company for such a wonderful evening midst this weird Florida weather in California!

Um… where to begin? The Craft Beer? Wait no, the scrumptious eats? But, then there’s the terrific staff at Duck Food Brewing Company. I guess, what I am trying to say is, this event had it all.
This event, with its Gluten reduced craft beer paired with some great eats provided by Four Seasons Foods Catering, was a huge success. A guided educational tour was provided by the staff, including Head Quack Matt DelVecchio and Chief Fermentation Officer, Brett Goldstock. The tour provided insightful information into the brewery’s inner workings, and if there were one thing I learned this evening, was the dedication, passion, and hard work Duck Foot Brewery puts into their beer making.
My favorite part was the pairing of beers with food from Four Seasons Foods. The Cali Blond was dynamite paired with the fried fish taco. The fish was perfectly fried to a golden brown, crunchy, with tender fish, and went very well with the blond. The Red Ale paired with the Crostini with Shredded duck confit, provided a robust flavor by both, the West Coast IPA paired with Jumbo shrimp wrapped with basil and pancetta was a dream come true. The salt level of the pancetta enhanced the IPA’s big flavor, and the White IPA Marco polo pot stickers with Portobello mushrooms, gorgonzola, and goat cheese was bliss. The pop stickers sauté in the White IPA was over the top, but in a very good way, and finally the Porter paired with the Dark chocolate truffles infused with chili and/​or coffee was the perfect way to end the meal. A sweet and smoky treat with chocolate on chocolate.
However, Four Seasons Food Catering was not finished. No way indeed, because throughout the evening, they provided an additional parade of food, including tender New York Steak prepared to a perfect medium rare seasoned with oregano and an aggressive tasty seasoning, seared spiced ahi tuna sliced served over endives, and some amazing spicy grilled halibut fish tacos. These tacos were terrific, and I was quite impressed that they were made out in the parking lot in a make shift kitchen. Four Seasons Foods has some talented people. Very well done.
Honestly, if I were not told that the craft beers here were gluten reduce beers, I would of never noticed the difference. Duck Food Brewery has a gem here. The quality of the craft beers speak volumes for what they have accomplished, and to top it off, they are about the most friendliest bunch of people I have met in the business. Well done Duck Foot Brewery for sharing your passion with us, and thank you Four Seasons for taking this event to a heartwarming experience with your incredible eats.
