Elite Event: S&M Sausage & Meat

Just getting around to writing this — don’t know how I could have forgotten, except that this was my first Elite Event!
DELICIOUS sausage, and plentiful, along with their new, signature drink! Very friendly staff, and fun, welcoming, Eliters. I knew nobody, and yet felt the «love» of the community.
Where are the August Elite events? Can’t wait to attend another one, if this one is an indication of the fun and friendliness!

This was a newbie event, and it was pretty legit! I’m a newbie, obviously, but who cares, I had a great time. It was great meeting other new elites and once again kickin’ it with Brad the CM.
It was my first time at S&M I was rather impressed by the food quality. The event was set up in a cocktail happy hour type setting with hors d’oeuvres which included many options from their sausage and bacon lines.

Great beer selection. Great décor. Great bathroom wall paper. Great place. Will I come back? Hell yes.
Overall, I thought the event was well organized and it was cool how the ice breakers really stimulated the party. I had a great time and always look forward to any Unilocal events! Peace.

This was such a fun event! It was cool to get to mingle and meet some more new elites! The little gifts were so cool! Thanks Brad!
I’d been to S&M a few times before and always am super satisfied with my meals there. The samples of sausage, bacon, meatballs and mac n cheese that the staff kept a comin’ was so so delicious. Portuguese pineapple was my favorite! SO SO GOOD. Hickory bacon, garlic parmesan rosemary bacon, HONEY SRIRACHA BACON! *faints*
The pacific jewel cocktail with the Old Harbor gin was a really delicious, refreshing drink. I HIGHLY suggest that you check out Old Harbor gin — it was really superb.
Great to get out and meet some of you!

Oh wow! This event was awesome. We tried so many different types of sausages and bacon. It was also really cool to meet all of the new elites and see who was in the same boat as me.
My favorite was the Portuguese pineapple sausage. It had just the perfect flavor, but each one we tried was super delicious. I feel like you can’t go wrong at S&M. Maple bacon, honey sriracha bacon, pizza sausage, YUM!
The spicy Old Harbor Gin was perfect in the new Pacific Jewel cocktail. I feel so lucky to have been invited to this event and can’t wait to go back to S&M to try more of their eats… Especially those chicharrones!

What better way to start the week than to get together with your fellow elite newbies and partake in some delicious food and cocktails? This girl sure can’t think of a better way to spend a Monday night!
Brad B. and Sandra M. were kind enough to plan this newbie meet and greet at S&M last night. Walking up to the restaurant I wasn’t quite sure where we were going to be since it appears much smaller than it is from the outside. Once I walked in, I discovered we were set up in this great little back room behind the meat counter. The room was setup with a few large tables, which lend themselves perfectly to events. There were some fun little Unilocal gifts spread around the tables and we were all given a ticket when we walked in. Once we found our matching number help by another Unilocaler, Brad hooked us up with some handy dandy portable phone chargers.
Once we all settled in, the staff at S&M was quick to start making the rounds with delicous bites of meaty goodness for us to try. Throughout the evening, I sampled venison meatballs, alligator sausage, honey sirracha bacon, pizza sausage, and garlic rosemary parmesean bacon among others. They’re all like little drops of meat heaven, but the venison meatballs and honey sirracha bacon get my vote for MVP. They also passed around a non-​meat sample of there coconut alfredo mac n cheese with broccolini. This was pretty amazing, especially for a vegeterian dish at a place that specializes in meat! I was actually sitting with a vegetarian, so the owner Justin was kind enough to bring out some extra mac n’ cheese and some of their bib lettuce wraps. The lettuce wraps were also surprisingly tasty. They have pear and cashews with a spicy mango sauce and some goat chesse on top for good measure. I would totally recommend this for someone who’s looking for a lighter option at S&M. Thanks for letting us check them out Justin, both you and the food are total rockstars! Your staff is also amazing, and although I didn’t catch all of their names I know Jessie stopped by our table a ton of times and was super friendly and upbeat.
We also lucked out int the adult bevrage portion of the evening since Dan from Old Harbor Distilling Co. joined us. Dan makes some pretty legit gin with a great cucumber undertone and the folks at S&M were kind enough to turn that gin into a delightful cocktail of cucumber and peppery goodness. I also got to sanmple the gin alone, and it would be perfect for all those summer cocktails folks will soon be making.
This was not only a grat event, but I got the chance to meet some of my fellow Unilocalers, check out a new restaraunt that I will surely return too, and discover a great local gin proveyer. Huge thank you to Brad B. and Sandra M. for putting on such a great event and making me feel welcome into the Unilocal family, Justin at S&M for all of his hospitality and treating us to some great eats, and last but not least, Dan from Old Harbor Distilling Co. for sharing his gin making talents with us! Also, I want to say thanks to my fellow attendees for coming up and saying hi! It was great meeting all of you!

This event was a mixer for the Unilocal Elite Newbies. .. And it was a major success ! Thanks Brad and Justin for your efforts in getting this unruly bunch together in one room.
The sausages and bacon served were indescribably delicious, and I mean ALL of them. My palate was in overdrive processing those wonderful combinations of wild meat, and then there’s the bacon. .. Simply mouthwatering. Honey sriracha bacon? Wheel in more, guys.
And I must add, there was a very nice selection of craft beers offered, and beer certainly complements the meats perfectly.
A shoutout to our servers, who were most patient and helpful when we Noobs needed patience and help. Well done.
All in all, a super evening, and I am so happy I had the opportunity to meet other new Elite Unilocalers.

Prelims: a fantastic small little meat shop that is quite quaint in so many different ways: from the Nic Cage décor to the tasting results and floor plans that decorate the walls of the men’s bathroom, S&M is a great place to eat meat and hang with friends. Parking is a bit tough, but most of us managed to root around for some spots in the area that weren’t too far. The service was great, with so many servers willing to go the extra mile, bringing us the toothpicks and the meats and the drinks. The event was a fanatastic intro for many of us newbie Unilocal Elites, with lots of fun people and food and drinks to bond over. One cool thing Sandra and Brad did (y’all awesome people, you know that?!) was to give out these tickets and in order to get your Unilocal prize (a portable phone charger), you had to find someone else that had the same ticket number as you did. This was such an interesting way to meet people and meet people we did!
But what you want to know about is the food — and oh my goodness Justin was spoiling the living hell out of us. Starting with the prime minister of meats (because a good ribeye is still king): BACON. We tried the honey sriracha, the chipotle, the hickory, the garlic rosemary, the cinnamon and the brown sugar. Good Lord, all these were fantastic. I would rank them in this order: 1. Garlic Rosemary 2. Hickory 3. Honey Sriracha 4. Cinnamon 5. Brown Sugar 6. Chipotle. The Garlic Rosemary bacon was heavenly — a perfect complement of earthy herbs mixed with the savory fat of the bacon to become a tango of flavors that dance all over your tongue. The hickory bacon has become the standard bearer — the hickory flavor is well known, but eating it here made you know that THIS is how hickory bacon is supposed to taste like. The Honey Sriracha is a play on the sweet, spicy, and fatty, and it’s twist that is so unlikely that it totally works in so many different ways! The cinnamon and brown sugar were a great complement of the sweet and the fatty, and if you enjoy bacon, you know that these two are some of the greatest flavor combos ever! The Chipotle was pretty good, but I would say it didn’t stand a chance compared to all the over flavors of bacon that was flying out of the kitchen. That’s right, the pigs were flying!
Now for the sausages: we had the Whiskey Fennel, Lamb Merguez, Pineapple Portuguese, pizza sausage, and the Alligator Antelope Andouille. Ranked in order of awesomeness and pizzaz: 1. Lamb Merguez 2. Whiskey Fennel 3. Pineapple Portuguese 4. Alligator Andouille 5. Pizza Sausage. The Lamb Merguez was phenomenal — raise your hands if you thought you could make lamb into an awesome sausage. All you lot that did are friggin liars. The lamb sausage was so so so good! It was gamey and meaty and a fantastic blend of spices and herbs that mixed with the meat and the fat to bring heaven to my tastebuds. The Whiskey Fennel wasn’t that far behind — so earthy and flavorful, you could taste the whiskey and it mixed well with the fennel to bring a herb-​y tinge to the pork that was just right. The Pineapple Portuguese was the favorite for many people and I could see why — it’s a play on the sweet and savory and with the use of the Portguguese, it provided a great taste that is not unlike the Hawaiian pizza (and I suspect that if you like Hawaiian, you’ll like the pineapple portuguese) and it’s a great flavor combo. The Alligator Andouille was quite good — personally I love me some gator and that it was an andouille? Hot damn! Gator is a bit much for some, but I loved it. The Pizza sausage tasted like a pizza. Probably all the ground up pepperoni. Much interesting. Much cool.
Well, this place is known as sausage AND meats: we got to try coconut «Not Mac N’ Cheese», which is a spaetzel-​coconut-​broccolini dish with alfredo sauce and while it sounds like a mad scientist was hungry and threw whatever leftovers he had in the fridge together, it was quite delicious. It was very creamy but not overly so, and the broccolini put in a nice texture and a bit of color. The venison-​pork meatballs in house marinara sauce were to die for; a great blend of fatty and gamey, along with some fantastic sauce. And did you know it comes in a sandwich? The owner Justin had some made because they were his «fave» — so if the guy that makes his own meat eats this stuff, you know it gotta be good. I also tried the fried pork belly bits, which are drizzled with honey, an in-​house salsa roja with garlic aoili; it was a delicious texture twist, with the crispy and the fatty and the sweet playing a pleasant interlude on my tongue.
A quick note: My friend got the buffalo bacon burbon — quite strong, quite delicious
Shout-​out to Justin! How awesome to be introduced to Unilocal Elite through something like this :) Your meats are great! Your drinks are great! We love you! Brad and Sandra deserve a shoutout because this event was smashing success! You’re awesome!

I have not heard of this place until I got the email about RSVPing for the event but I am so glad I came.
I honestly got a little lost getting here from 163 South. Got off the wrong Washington Street and had to make a U-​y in Hillcrest, then found parking on the other side of the car wash place next to S&M after seeing what looked like other fresh meats parking.
The décor reminds me of Soda &Swine, probably because it said Swine outside with the patio and stuff (almost thought I was at the wrong place). In their Unilocal pictures, I didn’t see a back room so I was delightfully surprised when I walked up to check in and there were tables set up for us. (WITH A BUNCH OF Unilocal SWAGGG!!)
My oh my, what a wonderful day. BACON BACON BACON.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to taste what some called the best bacon they have ever tasted (garlic parmesan rosemary), but I was lucky enough to taste everything else. Between the cinnamon sugar, chipotle, hickory, and honey sriracha, I think the cinnamon sugar won by… barely. HONESTLY, everything was good really.
I LOVED the Lamb Merguez. I tried the Alligator Andouille but will say I’m just not adventurous. The Pineapple Portuguese was good. The Pizza sausage tasted just like pizza haha. Whiskey fennel was excellent.
I think I had 2 or three different meatballs but honestly don’t remember the names to. Oh welll. we all tasted them haha. If I could change anything, I would, next time, dip in the sauce before scarfing it down.
The coconut not «mac n’ cheese» was also delish!
The complimentary cocktail, pacific jewel, was just fabulous. Definitely my type of drink. Sweet throughout but slowly creeps up on you.
I mean, this place had everything down! Even their fruit infused water was delish.
I will definitely be back with friends. The service today was excellent. Thank you so much!

Brad B. This was an amazing event to go to for first timers. Justin you are amazing and I want to thank you again for taking care of this vegetarian. If I ate meat this would be my favorite place. Back in the day I could eat a whole pig. I LOVED BACON. The different flavors that you offer for all of that pork looked to die for and smelled Amazing. I really was tempted to part ways with the vegetables and just dive into some bacon. I am sure if I had done that though, I would not be able to write a post today for my tummy might not have been too happy with me.
All joking aside, you really did entertain and take care of us all. Thanks again for a wonderful evening meeting new people and finding a new place to visit more often.

Great event with great prizes and food! This event was for new elites so it was a more intimate event for everyone to mingle. We got a raffle ticket and had to find a matching number in order to get a prize. The prize was a recharging battery which I thought was super cool!
We got to try a lot of different sausages and bacon, the bacon was especially delicious! I forgot what most are called though since there were so many!
Overall, it was an exciting event and got to meet a few new fellow elites!

This was an amazing event! Thank you to S&M for hosting the event and also to Brad for putting it all together. This was my first Elite event and I didn’t know what to expect.
When I first arrived, S&M is a cute place. There’s outdoor seating available and large room in the back and additional seating inside. There is a wall with so many different types of sauces and salsas. Many flavors were interesting that I would definitely want to try a few of them. There was such a great variety of sausage and meat (of course)! The most interesting sausage was an alligator sausage. I don’t think I would normally eat alligator, but since all the food tasted so good, I figured why not? Alligator is very interesting, it comes apart easily and is a little drier than other meats. My favorites were the bacon. Rosemary bacon, Honey Sriracha Bacon, Cinnamon Sugar Bacon. There were so many different varieties and they all tasted soo good.
Being that this event was specifically for newer elites, it made it a lot less intimidating because I knew there would be others in my same place. I didn’t know anyone before coming, but everyone I met was super friendly and I left with new friends.
S&M was a great place! The food is great and all the servers were super friendly and really nice. I will definitely be back.

My first actual SD official Unilocal Elite Event! woot woot! what a fun evening meeting my SD Unilocal elite class of 2015! congrats everyone on receiving your elite 2015 badge!
I was a few minutes late arriving to the event, we got the back room all to ourselves. Sandra and Brad greeted me upon arriving as always they were super friendly and easy to talk to throughout the event! they are awesome!
As an ice breaker, we were given tickets and were tasked with finding someone who had the same last 2 numbers! thank you Debbie S. for making this super easy, she saw we had the right numbers and we won brand new Unilocal swag! the Unilocal battery charger! dont be jelly! :p
tons of Unilocal swag in all the tables, shot glasses, the bouncy ball and the wine openers all fun items to have!
I want to thank the staff at S&M they were wonderful! there were tons and tons of sausages and bacon samples!
My Favorite bacon sample was the honey siracha one, and from the sausages I would say the alligator one!
We also had a birthday girl in the house! Happy Birthday Day Julie!

Elite 2015!!! #isneattobeelite.

I had been to Sausage & Meat (S&M) during Restaurant Week 2015, so this eatery already had my stamp of approval even prior to this Unilocal Elite event. But the restaurant staff went above and beyond the call to provide our newer crop of Elites with great-​tasting food and an invaluable experience.
First off, the find-​your-​partner raffle ticket game was fun to kick off the night. I wasn’t really even aware of what was going on … as soon as I got there, I got my raffle ticket. A few seconds later, Mac found me, discovered she was my Unilocal Elite match for the night and we redeemed our prize. Simple as that (and I hadn’t even checked in at the event yet so I didn’t know that was the purpose of the raffle ticket).
The event was held in the back area of S&M, which reminded me of an upscale mess hall/​cafeteria area. It was cool to actually hang out there, since my only experience dining at the place was in the front left, since it wasn’t crowded when I went for the lunch options during Restaurant Week.
The S&M staff took great care of us. Special thanks to all the servers, and of course, Brad B. and Sandra, for organizing such a fun, meaty and bacon-​filled event!
Here’s what we enjoyed throughout the evening:
«Coconut ‘Not’ Mac N’ Cheese»: I had been curious about this dish during SDRW 2015, but I didn’t get a chance to try it. Fortunately, during this event, they gave us tiny little bowls of this unique mac and cheese dish. I’ll admit, I was a little wary at first because of the coconut – and though I’m from Hawaii, I don’t have an affinity for coconut – but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this medley. It included spaetzel, toasted coconut, brocollini and white cheddar (I think), but the mac and cheese sported a great mixture of textures and flavors from the different ingredients. The coconut flavor was light enough for me to handle, and I think my favorite component of the dish had to be the brocollini cause it gave the creamy mix some extra crunch.
«Lamb Merguez» sausage: We had several different sausages throughout the night, but this had to be one of my favorites. I don’t eat lamb that often, but I liked the savory flavor and the fact that this sausage wasn’t particularly salty or spicy.
«Pizza Sausage»: I think this had to be my favorite sausage … especially when I topped it with that homemade mustard! If I ever come to S&M again and I actually get a sausage, I’m ordering this one.
«Alligator Antelope Pork»: I think I’ve only tried alligator once in my life, and it was mixed in with a mac and cheese dish, but I remember liking it a lot. This time, I got to experience the full on sausage to appreciate its taste and texture. I suppose I wouldn’t have known that I was eating alligator if no one told me, since I didn’t exactly know what to expect, but I definitely enjoyed the flavor. It’s always a plus when the meat itself isn’t super tough as well!
«Hashtag Fries»: I always wanted to try these fries – so very cleverly named – and the bacon-​infused ketchup provided the perfect complement. I loved the seasoning of the waffle fries; I think they tasted great all by themselves, no condiments needed.
Of course, no visit to S&M would be complete without trying some of that bacon. Here are some of the ones that were offered:
«Brown Sugar»: This had to be my favorite, of all the bacon flavors that I tried during the night. Of course, I had actually tried this one during RW2015 so I already knew that it was good. I’m sure my preferred bacon would depend on the mood I’m in, but this bacon sported the perfect combination of sweet and savory. You get that smoky bacon flavor with a slight, caramelized sweetness on top that leaves behind a great aftertaste. I could seriously never get tired of this one!
«Garlic Rosemary Parmesan»: I had also tried this bacon before, so I knew it was good. This one is probably my favorite of all the savory bacons. I absolutely love garlic and I love Parm cheese, so this bacon strip embodies the best of both worlds. The combined flavors taste phenomenal and I would highly recommend this one if you’re looking for a savory bacon choice.
«Honey Sriracha»: Initially, I was a little scared to try this bacon because it has the «S» word in it, and I can’t handle super spicy foods. Thankfully, the kick wasn’t too bad and I liked the balance between the slightly spicy sriracha and the subtle honey flavor. I would definitely order this one again.
«Cinnamon Sugar»: This sweet bacon was sort of similar to the brown sugar, but I think I would have liked it more if there were more cinnamon on top. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the subtle sweetness of it … I just still preferred the «Brown Sugar» flavor and would opt for that one if I wanted a sweet bacon.

I made so many friends last night! The Unilocal community is so welcoming… Love It!
Walking up into the back portion of S&M yesterday, I was welcomed by Sandra M. and Brad B. They handed over a raffle ticket, and it was my mission to find my number twin… and it was difficult. There were only about 36 of us, how come I can’t find #34?! I did make some friends in this process and later met Heihachiro K. so we could cash in on our handy-​dandy Unilocal Elite charging pod.
We all got settled in, sitting at 3 community tables. Brad & Justin from S&M introduced themselves & gave an overview of the restaurant and night to come.
We were offered an array of sausage & bacon samples. Every time the S&M crew came around, it was something new to try… and they were all FAB!
Throughout the evening I sampled: Whiskey Fennel Sausage, Lamb Merguez Sausage (flavorful), Alligator sausage (spicy & yum), Pizza sausage, & Pineapple sausage (moist & sweet). The bacon side was: Hickory, Honey Sriracha, Garlic Rosemary Parmesan, Brown Sugar Smoked Chipotle, & Cinnamon Sugar. It was really hard to pick a favorite as they were all delicious and piping hot off the grill! We were also served a coconut Alfredo with broccolini that I adored! It was sooo yummy!
To help wash our bites down, our awesome local Distiller, Dan, from Old Harbor Spirits was on hand with some drinks. S&M paired up with Old Harbor on a delicious cocktail called the Pacific Jewel… cucumbers in my drink are always a good thing! I chopped it up with Dan for a moment. He let me know they are located on 17^th& K in the East Village, available in over 100 locations, and a little bird at my table named Lesley told me they do weekend tours of the distillery. The San Miguel Southwestern Gin they brought in had a great flavor profile… hints of lime, cucumber, & cilantro. Cheers, Dan!
This was an all around, great event. A special shout-​out to Jessie who was one of our awesome servers. All my fellow Unilocalers were cool. High-​Fives all around to James K., Stephanie T., Katie B., Janice A., Phi D., Christine G., Jeremy G., Jeff T., Sunny L., Lesley M. and the rest of you folks!

This was a great event. I ran into friends Sunny L and Jeff T before check-​in, so I knew fun times were in store for me. Brad and Sandra had arranged a little raffle/​prize game for us at the check-​in. I was matched with Katie B, it took me a few minutes to figure it out and I worked the room in the meantime and met a few people while trying to find my raffle partner. Yep, even sober I have no idea what’s going on.
I was fortunate to be sitting with Sunny and Jeff, both of whom have been to S&M already and knew all about the menu. Thanks to them I already know what to come back and get next time, in addition to a couple of the items I tried last night. Being a bacon lover, I enjoyed all of the bacon the ladies brought out, the honey sriracha was a delightful surprise. All of the sausages were tasty. I enjoyed them all! When Justin asked me at the end of night what my favorite item was, I really couldn’t name just one. I liked the pineapple Portuguese sausage a lot, along with the whiskey fennel and the alligator one which was great paired with the Creole mustard. I may have to make a few more trips here to narrow it down better. It’s all good, it’s just research people.
Everyone at S&M is friendly and fun. They made sure we were having a good time and they kept us well fed and happy. I talked to a few of the servers as well as Justin. I definitely want to come back and try one of the bacon old fashioneds. One of the servers did such a great job of describing it that I will have to come back for it. We really enjoyed Jessie, she was especially fun.
Brad brought Old Harbor Distilling Co. in to provide us with some of their tasty gin. Dan was on hand providing samples of the San Miguel Southwestern gin. He also mixed up some Pacific Jewel cocktails. These were delicious. Well matched for that spicy gin. I talked to him for a bit and he told me that they give tours of the distillery on Friday and Saturday evenings for $ 10. They make a few other spirits besides gin, I’m interested in checking it out since it’s here in town. He got his start in beer brewing and sold out and moved to his real passion, liquor.
I met some fun people last night, thanks Sabrina for making sure my son got the Unilocal mints, haha. Also Cesar was on hand taking photos for the event page since there was no photographer, that was really cool of him, and it was nice to meet him.
This was a great event, thanks again to Brad and Sandra for hosting. Thank you to Justin and everyone else at S&M for all their hard work! And thank you to Old Harbor Distilling for the gin drinks :)

This place is actually a gem it is on park blvd And has great selection on meat… The drinks are really great too, the Unilocal elite event was amazing the hosts brad and Sandra did an amazing job. It still amazes me how everyone is so friendly and welcoming

I’ll be honest and say that this will probably be one of the worst reviews I ever post because I was having so much fun at this event. From talking to James K. and meeting Brad B., Ros A., Christine G., Jennifer K., and Andrea K., I didn’t quite catch what I was eating and drinking. Nor did I take any pictures (check out a review from James K. for pictures).
I do remember that the beer was refreshing, the gin was uniquely delicious, and the meat was absolutely amazing. Especially the bacon. You can almost never go wrong with bacon, but the Honey Sriracha and Rosemary Parmesan bacons were top notch.
The goodies at this event also included bouncy balls, shot glasses, and a phone recharger. I was definitely most excited about the bouncy balls as everyone could tell, but I will admit that I am still a 5 year old at heart when it comes to bouncy balls.
Anyway, the staff at S&M is amazing and extremely friendly. They all did a great job of making us feel welcome and made sure that our drink requests and extra food requests (James ordered extra bacon to share) came out quickly. I will definitely be taking Cam back to S&M to at least try the bacon sometime.
Special thank yous to Brad and team for putting on an amazing event, S&M staff for their warm hospitality, and the Old Harbor representative for making a phenomenal cocktail. I apologize that I couldn’t remember all of your names, but you are all amazing! :)

Sausage, bacon, bacon infused bourbon, and gin… what more can I ask for!
The staff is great and super friendly. We tried several different sausages: the bison, alligator antelope andouille, lamb merguez, pineapple Portuguese and whiskey fennel. All were tasty but my favorite is hands down the pineapple Portuguese. This sausage is so juicy and flavorful! I also really enjoyed the brown sugar bacon. I could eat this every day and be happy. The honey siracha bacon was just magic in my mouth! The coconut «not mac and cheese» was also amazing. I just wish the portion was bigger because it was just a tease!
I tried the old fashion which was infused with bacon bourbon. I’m not a big bourbon drinker but it was pretty tasty. The special drink was a cucumber infused gin which was surprisingly good. It sort of tasted like a margitaria. I am not normally a gun drinker but I would order this drink Again
I can’t wait to come back and and enjoy some delicious sausage and bacon! This place is pretty much meat heaven!

Brad and Sandra did an awesome job arranging this newbie Elite event. It was fun meeting other new Elites and making new friends. Very glad to have been able to attend.
Totally impressed that Sandra had our name tags already filled out (spared everyone from having to try to decipher my chicken scrawl) — love it!
Brad and Sandra arranged a fun game to encourage mingling and getting to know each other.
We were given a ticket and had to find the person who had a ticket that also ended in the same last 3 numbers. When you found your match you’d get your check-​in offer: a Unilocal rescue phone charger.
As luck would have it, my match was Cesar who I met at Brewventure —
— last week.
Everyone got Unilocal party favors: bouncy ball, shot glass, wine opener, phone charger, and either mints or chapstick.
I’ve had S&M at other events so I knew we were in for a treat. This was a sausage fest like no other.
The servers brought the food to us rather than us having to get up and fill plates. The portions were perfectly bite-​sized, enough to enjoy and appreciate the flavors, but not too large so that we were stuffed.
We started with the coconut mac and cheese that was deliciously creamy.
Lamb merguez sausage: first time trying a lamb sausage and it won’t be my last. Tender and flavorful without being too fatty.
Honey Sriracha bacon: Honey, bacon, need I say more?
Pineapple portuguese sausage: Very surprising flavor, hint of sweet but not overbearing
Alligator antelope pork sausage: I’ve had alligator in New Orleans on a po’boy, but that was a dry crunchy mess. Whereas the alligator at S&M was moist and if you didn’t know it was alligator antelope, you’d think you were eating a pork sausage with a slightly different taste.
Pizza sausage: a white sausage with hints of oregano?
Cinnamon sugar bacon: Wow. Let’s just say the honey bacon (which was amazing) got kicked to the curb by the cinnamon sugar bacon. Man, a BLT with this bacon would be diabetic nightmare. But oh it would taste so good!
Old Harbor Distilling brought their Southwestern Gin. I’ve never been a gin drinker, but this gin could make anyone a convert. Flavored with lime, cucumber, cilantro, and sage (all locally grown), very smooth and tasty.
Not sure the name of the cocktail they made for us with the gin, but it was refreshing. Like an alcoholic lemonade — hits the spot without being too sweet and you don’t even know you’re drinking.
It was Julie’s birthday so Justin (one of the owners) presented her with a butterscotch pudding and we all sang Happy Birthday.
Looking forward to coming back another time and trying the rest of S&M’s menu.

I don’t know that I would have gone here if it weren’t for the Unilocal event, but having gone, I am already telling all of my friends that they need to check it out! The menu can be a bit intimidating not knowing what to order. I checked out friends reviews that had already been but there didn’t seem to be any consensus on what you must try other than strips of bacon. I feel like this is the place comedian Jim Gaffigan must come to when he is in San Diego.
The restaurant has a nice outdoor patio, indoor bar area where you can order the full menu and a moderate sized dining area. They also have a back room for private events and regular dining. We got the back room and it’s really a great setup if you are having a private event because there is access to the kitchen but you are separate from the rest of the restaurant to enjoy a private gathering.
Our Host Brad B. and Justin from S&M kicked things off with a brief introduction before the servers began giving out samples. There is a wide variety of meats anywhere from Antelope to Wagyu (I had to look this animal up). And believe it or not, they also have something if you are Vegan. We sampled the pizza sausage as well as the alligator and all were so flavorful (okay, maybe not the alligator so much). All the sausages are cooked perfectly, very tender and so many different flavors.
But I can’t deny… my favorite without a doubt was the bacon! We tried many flavors all of which were very good, but when we got the Garlic Parmesan Rosemary, we just had to order some for ourselves. That is until we tried the Honey Sriracha!!! Without question, the Rosemary is incredible and a flavor I never would have thought of with bacon. But the honey sriracha… well, I think I would have gone on eating that until they ran out!
They have a good selection of beers on tap and there is no question how good it goes with the meats. You can come here for a full meal, or you can just come for drinks and a small bite and when I say a small bite, I’m of course talking about the bacon. See, I really think they need to get Jim Gaffigan to come and do his bacon skit at their restaurant.
Although this even gave me an incredible selection of so many of their meats, I will absolutely be back to try many of the others I didn’t. I would like to get a full sausage and try their pulled pork sandwich for starters… oh, and of course to have more sriracha bacon!
