Fitness West

It’s a modest gym and doesn’t have a ton of bells & whistles but it’s full of nice people and kept clean. I dig it.

Love this gym. Has everything you need for a full body cardio and strength training workout. Everyone is super friendly and seem to really care about its members. I regularly go to Chanda’s 6am spin class on Tuesday and Thursday“s. She is amazing! From beginning to end she is motivating, supportive, funny… and really encourages you to get out of your comfort zone. She is great at switching up the music and routines. Highly recommend checking out a class with her.

Great value, great hours, and friendly staff. It’s never overwhelmingly busy, at least when I go in the morning, which is huge. The equipment may not be cutting edge, and I do wish they had more kettle bells… But the money I’m saving vs my old gym is totally worth it.

I have made this my regular gym as its so close and convenient to where we leave. There is a decent amount of machines and weights to use. There seems to be a leak in the roof in the main cardio room.

For once in my life a gym that I love going to. This is the perfect locals gym. It is completely non-​threatening and I can work out with out a single worry. I joined last month and have been going regularly, and that right there says a lot about the gym. Super convenient if you live in PB, always a ton of parking and everyone in the gym is so friendly. I am happy to be a new regular here!

Great little locally owned gym. I was in town for a day and purchased a day pass for $ 10 cash.
Has everything you’d need to get your fitness on. Full stack of dumbbells to 110# /​squat rack /​free weights /​kettles and every machine in between.
They also had two yoga studios, a complete cardio section (stair climbers /​treadmills /​cycles) and plenty of rolling apparatuses to also get stretched out.
Highly recommend for anyone serious about their workout.

A group of friends and I joined this gym a couple months ago and it’s been great. We use the big workout room to do circuit training when there isn’t a specificclass going on. The monthly membership is $ 29 dollars (steal) if you try out the gym for $ 10 initially. The owners are GEMS. They are so helpful with directing us poor souls to find gym equipment that we need for our deathly circuit training. The gym place is surprisingly big/​spacious.

If you are looking for a smaller, more family feel of a gym look no further! I have been a member of all types of gyms ranging from 24 hour to La Jolla Sports Club and I have not enjoyed a gym as much as this one. The monthly rate it SUPER affordable and you don’t have to break the bank being a member. The group classes at this gym are awesome and challenging. I like not being part of a franchise and supporting the great family that owns this gym. I workout with a trainer– Andrew who has whipped my butt into shape who I love and would definitely recommend. When I was a member at 24hr in PB there was no time of day I would go that wasn’t busy, it was ridiculous! The best part about this gym is you are never fighting for machines.

I joined Fitness West about 4 months ago after I had purchased a Groupon valid for 2 months. My friend who was staying in town ask me to join it with her so that we could take classes together. I had been part of a Pilates studio, but it was getting a bit pricey for me, I decided to give Fitness West a try. I’m very happy my friend asked me to join her because although she moved away now, I am now a Fitness West member and I love it!
The gym is «small» compared to other big chain gyms, but they still have all the necessary cardio machines, weights, and lifting equipment for you to do your workout. They also have a nice room for classes and or for you to stretch and do your personal workout. I love being able to run on the treadmill or ride the bike with the fresh air from the trees blowing into the gym– it’s perfect!
The vibe and feel of Fitness West is what I truly like about this gym, the owner who opened the gym along with his brother years ago is usually there in the mornings and will smile at you when you come in. He seems very laid back and accommodating to his clients. Also, although Fitness West is in Pacific Beach it’s nothing like the local 24hr Fitness. I mean sure there are guys in tank tops lifting weights and what not but there is also a good mix of older folks, men and women getting their fitness on. There is also plenty of parking! Fitness West is on the East side of the Vons Plaza on top of Athena Greek Restaurant, there is lots of parking!
I would recommend Fitness West to anyone looking for a small local gym with the local feel.
I would not recommend Fitness West to anyone looking for a fancy, sauna, pool, with numerous amenities type of feel.

Everybody is friendly, and the location is very convenient (for parking and other stores around). For the price I have all I need so I’m very satisfied ! Plus I like that it’s at the 2^nd floor so it’s really bright inside. The staff is always nice, and the members are cool (meaning not too intense and looking bad at you if you are using «their» machine). Much better than the 24h fitness on Garnet where I used to go!

Great gym for a basic quick work out. Staff were great and provided a good drop in rate.

Good local gym but the weekend hours are pretty crappy. Closed before 8 on both Saturday and Sunday? Bummer.

I enjoyed the old-​school gym (not over crowded) and the parking is good. But that was pretty much it. I bought a group-​on to try it out and thank god I did that instead of buying a membership. I used the gym primarily for the spin classes. There is no gym in San diego that has a 5pm spin class that has 6 – 8 people in it… and there is a reason why this one does… because the classes during the week taught by Rodrigo are HORRIBLE.
I went over the course of 2 months and kept giving it a try and couldn’t stand it any longer. The teacher doesn’t sit on a bike, rather he sits in the corner on a medicine ball and barks orders in the corner (which you can’t hear) because the music is loud (which I enjoy). If you don’t do what he says or stay with «his» idea of form or anything he comes over and schools you in front of the whole class. My thoughts are how about you lead by example and actually get on a bike and teach! There is a girl who is his apprentice and she sometimes teaches when he doesn’t show up, and she is 10times better than him. I honestly wish she would teach because she plays relevant music and actually spins.
And he plays music that is completely irrelevant to the class (99% women) he’ll play some yoga music then rave music and then 4 heavy metal live music in a row. And the equipment is very old, and needs to be updated!!!
Anyways don’t waste your time.

Was going to check out a spin cycle class here but they DON’T PROVIDE the clip-​in SHOES :(Guess I’m spoilled by Sparkcycle, who provides shoes, lockers & showers.
At check in the older gentleman acted like I was some weird city slicker who just arrived in their Podunk town asking about a new-​fangled idea ;/

Great local gym. Made to feel very welcome on both days I went and at $ 10 a day, a snip.
Full of pumping music, and people admiring themselves in mirrors — no. Full of nice people working out — yes.

Definitely a smaller gym. I come here in the mornings however and rarely have trouble using whatever equipment that I want. It’s a mix of young and old and level of fitness. There is only one squat rack which is a bummer, but I’ve never had an issue using it when I wanted to. The cardio equipment is average, but I do not use a lot of it. They have the standard ellipticals, treadmills, bicycles, rowing machines and stair steppers. It’s not a fancy gym but any means, but if you’re dedicated and can get creative with your workout it definitely gets the job done. Also only $ 30 a month and you can cancel your membership at anytime with no penalty!

I tried out this gym for a week-​long 10 dollar trial due to the proximity to my house. While it is only 2 blocks away and it would motivate me to go often, it is just too small and not well equipped. It is very old and the set up of the gym is strange compared to what I’m used to. They have a small room with cardio machines (about 6 of each of your standard machines; treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical, etc.) Next is an empty stretch/​abs room where they hold classes every so often. And the next section is the weights area.
The gym is run by very nice people who seem to know most people who are working out which is an aspect that I like but I think it is just too small for my taste. The bathrooms/​locker rooms aren’t well equipped and only have two small showers. If I’m paying the same price that I would pay at somewhere like Gold’s gym, I want to make sure they’re are plenty of showers and hopefully a sauna as well. Also, there is no pool or court accessibility which is a major downside for me.
Overall, this gym just isn’t worth 29 dollars a month which is a shame due to the closeness to my house. I hope they continue to do well and get cliental though because the staff was very friendly and hard working!

The other gyms are so packed. You usually have to wait for weights and machines. Fitness West is for those that want to get their fitness on without the wait. They have classes, free weights, and machines just like any other gym. But, unlike other gyms, you have access to all the bosu balls, medicine balls, kettle bells, trx bands, and other things the trainers use.
The gym is not very up to date but the equipment definitely is. They did remodel the bathrooms. What you give up for eye appeal, you get back with convenience. There’s always parking, checking in is quick and easy, there’s not any creepers (that I’ve seen), the owner is usually always on site, it’s clean, and the tv’s have sound.
The membership is $ 30/​month-​ish. There is a startup fee. I can’t remember how much it is but I think it was around $ 20 (don’t quote me on that).
In short, this is just your local, non-​corporate, easy-​going, neighborhood gym.

By far the best gym in Pacific Beach. If you’ve been to the 24 hours down the street you know that it’s almost impossible to find a time of the day when it’s not more packed then a night club. Shock is also down the street and it’s one of the worst gyms I have ever been to don’t expect anything to be clean or any of the weights to be racked.
Anyway back to fitness west. Best place in town. It has a nice view overlooking the city and is a great place for those who are new to the gym scene. This gym does have a rush hour but it doesn’t last very long. For the most part it’s very easy to find room to get your full work out in without waiting threw out the whole day. They do offer classes yoga, spin Ect Ect I personally haven’t been to any but have taken some glances inside and they seem very legit.
It’s a smaller gym but a good one for a fair price. The BEST maintained gym in the area and very good staff. It’s not like the other gyms around whom trainers are more worried about there social life then actually helping there clients. I live down the street and plan to move closer to the beach soon but I’ll be keeping my membership here and refuse to go to the other two that PB offers.
