FX Dojo is a learning center dedicated to Computer Graphics and Animation. Classes are available for kids, teenagers, and adults. Lessons focus on using software for art as well as technical problem solving… and it is always fun!

History

Established in 2012.

FX Dojo evolved as a place to explore alternative ways of learning, using the ever-​changing tools of new media with a traditional and disciplined approach to art as a career and lifestyle, not just a subject learned in school.

Otto L.

Business Owner

Otto Lai began his professional career in New York as a modeler on MTV’s Celebrity Death Match and then as an animator on Nickelodeon’s Little Bill. Since moving to San Diego, he joined Legend 3D to work on Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, and as Head Compositing Trainer helped prepare artists for Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon, Smurfs, and other titles. With over 7 years of teaching experience, Otto co-​founded the Visual Effects and Compositing Program at Platt College in 2010. He teaches at Platt, Art Institute San Diego, and San Diego State. Otto has a BFA in Film & TV from Tisch School of the Arts, NYU and a Masters Degree from NYU’s Center for Advanced Digital Applications.

Otto is an amazing teacher! My 4th grade son and 3 of his friends signed up for a Blender 3D Animation class and I was a bit worried since they are so young and it is a complicated program. The boys love it and are doing really well and it is all because Otto is such a great teacher. He creates these great short challenges to make even the most basic stuff fun and engaging. He makes sure all the kids move along together and master each thing. He knows how to teach them in a way they understand and keeps their attention. We will definitely be signing up for more!

If you want to know how to do cool digital effects I recommend going to FX dojo! Otto is by far the greatest teacher ever! He will sit with you until you understand how the system works. Very relaxed environment definite 5⁄5 stars!!!

Otto is a great teacher and an even better person. He really works hard to make sure all his students are heard and helped. I learned a ton of useful information about video editing with Première and After Effects that I use in most of my projects now.
I am going to be taking his class on Maya next semester at MiraCosta because I have always been intimidated by 3D, but I know with Otto as my sensei I will be on my way to becoming an expert in all things FX!
The FX Dojo is also a great spot that inspires creativity right when you walk in the door.

Otto Lai was my original sensei in my path of digital Ninjadom many moons ago. I took a break from my major in 3d-​animation to take his After Effects class and honestly, it was the best thing I could have done for my career. I have since worked on over a dozen high budget motion pictures, numerous commercials (with clients such Pantene, Self Magazine, and AMEX), and I am currently doing visuals for the San Diego Padres part time so I can attend Yoga School at Mosaic Studios in Golden Hill. Not only is this a Unilocal review, it’s a big warm fuzzy hug and thank you to Mr. Otto Lai.

Otto is without a doubt THE BEST teacher anyone can hope to learn from for all things digital media anywhere!
He is truly a master at his craft. He is a very laid back instructor and uses humor to help facilitate greater learning. However, he is also very serious about ensuring students learn what they need to succeed. Additionally, he makes it a point to teach on a level novices can understand from and gain batter understanding.
I have had the incredible privilege of being able to have attend more than a few classes he’s led over the past few years. In every occasion, he taught programs that at first were so completely convoluted and confusing, but within a very short time with his expert teaching style, students were able to quickly grasp the fundamentals of the programs and equally soar to new heights with their new found skills.
Anyone wishing to grow in their knowledge of digital media, (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Premier Pro, After Effects, Adobe Audition, Maya 3D just to name a few) would be wise to invest their time and finances to seek out his teaching. There is no better return on your investment if you want to become a master of digital media.

Otto is really awesome teacher! It is first time taking his class and his class is one of my favorite class. He teaches really well and also his class is very interesting too. He walks through every step by step, and also checking on every people, so that no one falls behind! He has good personality, very humorous person, and has expert teaching skills. I am really learning a lot from him and very enjoying his class. I would highly recommend taking his class.

Otto is awesome. I’ve taken his classes a couple semesters. He’s really fast paced, but extremely organized and easy to work with one-​on-​one. His way of teaching is really easy to follow from take notes step by step and then doing it yourself. It saves a lot of time. I’ve learned the essentials for After Effects, Première, and Maya with him. I still use these programs, and if I forget something, I just go back to Otto’s notes and I’m right back into it. Highly recommend taking any of his classes. A+.
