. However, the steaks are as good as as any other place downtown (unless someone is serving Kobe and I don’t know about it). The center cut Angus is always perfect. Sides are good but relatively small portions. Don’t bother with the seafood or chicken. The challenge has always been the service. Sometimes great, sometimes poor. When a steak costs more than $ 45, the service better always be great

Myself and my wife decided to have our wedding reception (small wedding group under 25) here on March 15^th. We selected a menu that gave our guests several options for app, salad, main dish and dessert. We were escorted to the Wyatt Earp room which was setup perfectly as we had wanted by the staff.
App: I selected the crab cakes. Seasoned well, nice cream based sauce underneath and good size.
Salad: I chose the Caesar salad. Nothing spectacular but your standard Caesar salad and dressed well.
Main course: Filet was cooked a perfect medium-​rare. Vegetable medley could have used a dash of salt and or pepper but nothing that couldn’t be easily corrected.
Dessert: Crème brûlée is amazing. (everyone in my party was raving about it.)
We had two waiters who were always on top of any needs we had and drinks were always full. They were kind enough to supply a couple bottles of both red and white wine for the dinner service. We will be returning for our one year anniversary. Thank you to the entire staff, a job well done.

Dined in Wyatt Earp’s poker room on the night of March 15^th after a buddy’s wedding. What a great place to have a post-​wedding reception! They selected an awesome menu that featured several different types of fare options.
After a long while of perusing through the menu of delicious options, I finally opted for:
Panko shrimp as an appetizer — incredibly delicious and fresh-​tasting; the Thai peanut sauce they slathered over the dish was perfect!
Caesar salad — very simple wasn’t anything to rave over; it had Romaine chunks, croutons, and cheese
Filet mignon was grilled to a perfect medium-​well and was ridiculously good. Additionally, the accompanying vegetable sides complimented the steak very well.
The rich chocolate mousse was sinfully chocolatey and delicious. I’m not a big dessert person, but this French chocolate stuff could be my new guilty pleasure.
Service at Georges on this evening was exceptional — the waiters were highly attentive and accommodating.
Definitely would like to return and I recommend this place for anyone to try out!
*I’m surprised they weren’t that busy the night we went.

My experience here is as follows:
7:45pm only two other tables with guests already a bad sign.
Service was good, fast knowlegable it’s just what he brought out that wasn’t good.
The crab cakes were literally from a box microwaved and garnished with nice sauce.
Salad wasn’t great wasn’t horrible… the rest of the meal fails to please, All in all there isn’t anything great about this place, and with enough reviews saying that I feel like a sucker for checking this place out with out checking Unilocal first, if I took the 2 seconds to pull it up on my iPhone whis would not have happened I won’t do it again, laziness brought me here and outside looks promising. Someone wrote why «how has this place survived»? Here is the answer convention folks who don’t know any better and are about to walk into a place and get ripped off just because its in a good location, I live here to may good options stay away from this spot.

So as of right now Georges On Fifth is sitting at a solid three star rating and I think that is a pretty poor representation of what this place has to offer…
I have been dipping into this place for years and absolutely love it! I have sat and sipped cocktails at the bar over appetizers and I have dined on the white tablecloths sipping wine and chowing down on a steak. Either way, it has always been a phenomenal experience!
The manager Mike has been a familiar face year in and year out and always goes out of his way to please. A word of advice to you first timers… take his recommendations! Would I ever have thought to order the tuna tartare here? No way, but when it was suggested I went for it. A nice hefty portion that is flavor loaded and you will be sopping up the sauce with a little extra bread upon request.
Another unexpected highlight would have to be the pork chop. It is listed as George’s favorite and I can see why. Big, juicy and sure to satisfy. Hey George, good call on that chop!
Do yourself a favor next time you are DT and pop into Georges rather than the overcrowded monstrosities with the hostesses working their hustle along 5^th ave… Georges will have plenty of room for you and you will not be disappointed.

Bland and boring. Unoriginal.
The service was friendly and attentive. The food came out fast. However, it was so bad that I definitely feel it drags this review down to a 1-​star assessment.
I had the new york strip, medium rare with asparagus for a side (45 $). The steak was room temperature, overcooked around the edges and undercooked, bloody rare in the middle. It was as if they threw it on the heat straight out of the cold fridge, leading to an uneven cook. The asparagus had 0 flavor. Plain steamed asparagus. The plate was not warmed at all, so halfway through my meal, everything was cold and flavorless.
My girlfriend had alfredo linguine pasta with salmon (20 $). We both realized this seemed like a weird menu option after ordering. It was. It was an average quality salmon filet, slightly overcooked and sitting in the middle of a bowl of watery, soulless alfredo pasta. Bad fish and bad pasta, together.
There was nothing innovative or remotely fun about this place. I understand they are going for a classic menu and ambiance. That is fine with me, if its executed well.
Save your money and go to Outback instead, their food is tastier. I’ve had a much better steak there, for half the price.

I have walked by this place for 10 years, always wondering who went there, or if it was just a place for tourists. I believe in trying new places, so when Groupon offered a 50% off deal to eat here, I couldn’t resist.
I decided to sit at the bar with a few other patrons and try some of their «best» items. I was told that the tuna tartare was amazing and the best around, so of course I ordered it. I was sadly disappointed. The tuna tasted like it was just thawed, the tuna chunks were too big to be enjoyable, and the dish was just clunky.
On to the next course (another «best» dish). I had to have a signature steak to give a steakhouse a fair review, so I ordered the New York, while a patron next to me ordered a rib eye. Both of our steaks arrived at the same time and with a nod of our heads and a smirk, we both began to cut into our steaks.
My steak was bland, and tasted like it was a very low grade beef. To my surprise, my bar companion actually spit his rib eye out into his napkin and said it tasted like it was spoiled– not the most appetizing thing to hear while I am trying to figure out why my steak tasted so bad. Needless to say, neither one of us finished our meal.
The bartender was the highlight of the night and offered us a nice glass of wine to wash down the bad taste in our mouths.
–I wish my experience was different because I want this place to succeed… Unfortunately, the days of fine food and a great atmosphere seem to be over for this downtown San Diego dinosaur.

We agree that the food was a «3» at best but was not that great, especially for the price.
Filet mignont (6 0z) was okay fpr $ 34 but not wow. Halibut for $ 30 was juicy, and risotto were both above average, but the accopanying cornbread, avocado slices, and tortilla strips did not «go with» the dish. This was perhaps to address the tourists to San Diego, which I am not. Neither the filet mignon or fish was «hot» from the kitchen. The cesar salad was a «3» as well, wih romaine lettuce not cold but great homemade crutons and shaved parmesean cheese.
The bathroom and carpet were outdated; both could use a little updating!

Place was good… really old fashioned looking inside. food was very expensive but very good. service was fantastic.

and the steak sandwich and the shrimp pasta. everything was very tasty.

Quality food, but a little on the pricey side. Thank god for groupon. I had the smaller filet mignon while my date had the pork chop. I have the say the horseradish-​hoisin-​ginger sauce on the latter was quite tasty.
Also: the bread was top-​notch. I ate two loaves.

This is really a special occasion type of restaurant. There are many other great deals in San Diego that offers this kind of ambiance and menu at a much lower cost. My boyfriend’s 8 oz steak that was smaller than the size of a baseball, which didn’t include any side dishes.
I felt like my sweet potato mash could have been hotter, the pork chop was delicious though.
Try this place using a GroupOn or Living Social deal!

I would have to give this place 3 stars (really 2.5 stars) because the food here overall is pretty average. The presentation is pretty nice but the main entrees are so-​so. The appetizers would get 4 stars! We got the lobster martini and ahi tuna tartare tower for apps and for our main entrees: scallops (which were breaded and tasted fried) and the lamb colorado which was so-​so. It wasn’t that flavored and was very well done (though we asked for medium).
Fyi: Only reason why we came here was because of our goood ‘ol groupon. Will we be back? Nope, its not worth the $$$ even with the groupon… well maybe for the appetizers.

Alright, I have to admit, this wasn’t a planned visit. I was on a Groupon buying mode last year and I accidently bought one for Georges on 5^th. And when I say «accidently» I mean accidently!!! And time was oh so close in the expiration of the coupon that I figured… well, use or now or forever hold my peace slash a loss of $ 25.
Coincidentally the expiration date happened to be in the same area as my friend’s birthday so I figured, ok fine, take her too I guess. Won’t mention names, but if you look at the recent reviews you will notice we had the exact same food and we have the same initials too. Ha.
Anyhoo, I was a bit surprised especially for a restaurant in the Gaslamp district. Why? Because this is actually pretty good. I think it’s a stigma that a lot of restaurants in the Gaslamp are usually 1 star less rated compared to other resturants of comparable food and service that is outside of the Gaslamp. This place for example had an average rating of 3 stars before this review.
For a starter, we shared the Dungeness crab cakes. Slight zing to it with the cilantro, but it’s a great way to start before you get your real protein.
For my main entrée, I went with their 18 oz bone in rib-​eye, prime grade, medium rare. It was good, but I wasn’t a fan of the sauce they put on it. Too me, all I need is salt and pepper on my steak. I think they tried to make it better but IMO the sauce was not needed.
I actually enjoyed my friend’s prime filet mignon instead. Oh well. Now I know. Still a pretty decent rib-​eye in my books. The server mentioned that this place is the only place in SD to serve wet-​aged prime steaks.
And you can never go wrong with Asparagus!!! mmmmhmmmm! I can just come here on future visits, just sitting at the bar during happy hour and munching on the asparagus. Awesome!

For dessert, they gave my birthday friend with the initials MC some cheesecake. Good stuff. It looked like someone from the 3^rd grade wrote happy birthday on her plate with the chocolate syrup.
Overall, the ambiance was great. Nice murals of random San Diego movie stars and popular sports people, that may or may not have any affiliation with the restaurant. The service was above average. And a major plus is that it’s in downtown so you can pretty much do whatever you want after dinner.

Steakhouse with USDA Prime steaks and limited selection of Snake River Wagyu (listed as Kobe in menu WTF?).
I had the bone-​in ribeye, one of my favorite cuts. I didn’t get the best of cuts which was a bit sinewy and of pretty inconsistent doneness, Rare to medium rare. As other noted, they use minimal seasoning, so I had to add salt and pepper to taste.
Doesn’t compare well to my home Seattle steakhouses in the same price range. Don’t have much experience with San Diego steakhouses, so your mileage may vary.

Solid 4…
I was treated to a really nice birthday dinner. We arrived shortly after opening and there was only 1 other party in the restaurant.
They have several tables avail for patio seating outside on 5^th Ave — great for people watching and for people to watch you!
The ambiance reminded me of old school gangsta. As you enter the restaurant, there’s a bar to the left and open seating inside with a handful of oversized booths (mostly reservations). Looks like there’s a second story, but wasn’t able to confirm or deny if there was another part of the restaurant.
We were seated in a nice table and in a quiet corner next to the wall of fame.
Ordered the following:
–Complimentary warm bread and butter were provided.
–Dungeness Crab Cakes ($ 12): Comes with 2. Not the best crab cakes, but they were good. Although I didn’t care for the roasted red pepper taste.
–USDA Prime Filet Mignon 8oz. cut ($ 34): This was my meat (med rare). The filet was tender and had very good flavor. Moist and juicy.
–USDA Prime «Bone — In» Rib Eye… «Tom’s Pick» 18 oz. cut ($ 42): I actually preferred the rib eye (med rare) over the filet. It was tender, fatty and super juicy. The rib eye also had a better glazed flavor than the filet, IMO.
–Asparagus ($ 8): Side dish that you can split at least between 2 people. The asparagus was on the smaller side and did have the crunch factor. I hate limpy asparagus!
Our service was great with frequent bread and water refills. Also the servers came around asking how we were doing on a constant basis.
Since I was celebrating one of my birthday celebrations, our server brought out a raspberry cheesecake with a candle that said «Happy Birthday from George» inscribed in chocolate sauce. The cheesecake was OK, and a very nice gesture on Georges part.
Def a happy birthday to me!!!

Went last night with my husband hoping for a decent meal and we were both thoroughly unimpressed.
1) Food: I was originally going to give it two stars because the bread is good, and the food was at least edible. We ordered crab cakes which were okay, nothing great. We both ordered a filet mignon with mashed potatoes. Not only was it flavorless, it took forever to come out… and it was LUKEWARM. Who wants to eat lukewarm food at a restaurant?! Didn’t bother staying for dessert because we were both fed up by the end of the meal.
2) Service: slow. The restaurant wasn’t even busy on a Saturday night, and everything took a long time. They seem to have forgotten my husband’s drink, so his drink didn’t come out until we were almost done with the appetizer. It took an extra 45 minutes after we were done eating to get and take care of the bill. We had a groupon, and the server forgot to take off the discount, so that added another 15 minutes. Also, I felt awkward everytime somebody asked me about the food or the service, because honestly it was awful, and I didn’t want to be rude.
3) Atmosphere: Stuffy and we were seated in this room where you felt as if you had to whisper. Also, the window kept on bowing in, which made me thankful I wasn’t sitting by the window in fear that it doesn’t hold up.
At least we saved money using the Groupon.

My eating partner got the New York strip ordered medium rare. He said it was good, but not as tender as he expected. There were some charred parts. He ordered the mashed potatoes as a side and thought it was a bit small.
I got the halibut, «grilled with chipotle tomato sauce, jalapeño corn cake, goat cheese risotto, avocado, cilantro oil, toasted pepitas and tortilla confetti.» FIrst of all, there were no pepitas. But that was ok, because it was great. The fish was perfect, and the corn cake and risotto were delicious accompaniments.

Dear Georges On Fifth,
We came here for an early Valentine’s Day night and it was «Meh» as Unilocal says. For a dinner of $ 90 without ordering any drinks the food was ok for my wife and my steak was charred/​burnt. I felt bad so I didn’t return it because the service was actually great, that is where the two stars come from is for the great wait service and historic atmosphere.
I ordered the 8oz Fillet Mignon – there was not much seasoning and the top end was charred that I actually had to spit it out, I didn’t finish, see picture posted. Again the service was great, the crab cakes were good but two for $ 12 was a bit pricy for the quality. I wish my experience could be different Georges but I don’t think I will be telling others about this place. My wife and I agree this was a miss and not a hit.

This place is a cool place with a romatic vibe to it. My husband and I walked by this place in downtown San Diego looking for a quiet place to eat on the weekend and was lucky enough to have found this place. Most other places were packed. So since it was nice out, we decided to sit outside. For starters, we both got the creamy wild mushroom soup with risotto. For my entrée, I got the $ 6.00 angus burger with fries. Fries don’t come with the burger, it’s a dollar extra and it’s also extra for cheese too.
The soup was bland but after adding some salt to it, it wasn’t so bad. They need to add more herbs to it or something. The burger was very good. The fries were just eh. They were shoestring fries. Skip the fries unless you have a real craving for fries when you’re here. The service was excellent. The servers were all attentive and friendly. For desert my husband got the NY cheesecake. So here is what everything cost:
Two wild mushroom soups: $ 8.00 each
One six dollar burger: $ 6.00 plus an additional dollar each for fries and cheese
NY cheesecake: $$ 6.00
Diet Coke: $ 3.00 (includes refills)
So the total with tax came out to be $ 35.89
More people came later in that night. If you’re looking for a quiet place to eat at in the downtown area and most places are packed, come here. Just get here early and I think you’ll be able to have the place mostly to yourself and whoever you’re with.

I needed a drink. God, I needed a drink. So we bellied up to the bar and I ordered a Cosmo from the friendly gal behind the rustic counter and as any good drunk is wont to do, told her all my troubles till her sympathetic limit was breeched and she kicked us out of the place.
Actually, we had a very nice time here, enjoying a couple of drinks under the watchful, threatening eyes of Wyatt Earp before winding our way to dinner at Croce’s. Little did we know that we should’ve stayed here for dinner. Live and learn. With walls painted with the faces of the famous and not-​so-​famous, it was a quiet, darkened sanctuary from the usual raucous, sophomoric behavior so rampant in the Gaslamp.
