Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley is a new school in a new location in San Diego run by World Champion Professor Marcelo Pereira.

History

Established in 1925.

1925 — The First Gracie School was Founded. Gracie Barra evolved in Barra, Brazil.

Jiu-​Jitsu, as we understand it today, is a natural and intuitive way of fighting that has rudimentary manifestations in various cultures in different historic moments.

Basic elements of grappling can be traced back to places like Greece, India, China, Rome, and even Native America.

Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley is run by Professor Marcelo Pereira, a 5th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Head instructor. Marcelo’s black belt and teaching credentials are certified by both the Confederation & International Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. With over 27 years of training and competition experience, Marcelo continues his training under Master Nelson Monteiro.

Marcelo Pereira is a 5th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Head instructor of Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley location.

Professor Marcelo’s black belt and teaching credentials are certified by both the Confederation & International Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

With over 27 years of training and competition experience, Professor Marcelo continues his training under Master Nelson Monteiro.

After speaking with a coworker who has been a student at Gracie Barra Encinitas for the past 8 years, he told me about a free intro class that’s offered to get a taste of the feeling of being on the mats, wearing a gi (provided by the school to barrow) and learning a few step by step techniques. I found the Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley school which is closer to my house in Poway.
Why did I wait so long to finally join a jujitsu class!?! Any doubts or ideas that a martial arts class can be intimidating or overwhelming was immediately answered with the friendly atmosphere provided by Professor Marcelo, Professor Justin and the other students in the class. It took me over 10 years to finally take the step and join a jujitsu class and the only regret I have is I didn’t take the step to do this sooner.
The class format…
— Warm up and stretching (5 – 10 minutes)
— Professor teaches a few step by step techniques.
— Professor Marcelo pairs the students up to practice the techniques (you won’t have the awkward moments of finding a partner)
— The last 15 — 20 minutes are usually reserved for rolling (sparring).
By the end of the class you’ll feel like you had one of the best workouts of your life while learning self defense. Not to mention, world class jujitsu instruction from a World Champion jujitsu Professor.

— Location is easy to find off Mira Mesa Blvd. Less than 5 minutes off the 805 and less than 10 minutes off the 15 freeway

If you are interested in joining the best jiu jitsu gym in San Diego with the best professor look no further. Head Professor Marcelo, Professor Ben, Professor Justin and Coach Daniel are awesome. They are patient, knowledgable and encouraging people. I was very new to the sport and they made me feel like family. I have so much more respect and more importantly balance in my life. Everyone is really chill and I have met some very cool people.

I have enjoyed training at Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley with Professor Marcelo Pereira. I usually train at Gracie Barra Carlsbad, but sometimes stop in for classes when work brings me to the area.
I have always received a warm welcome at this school, and can attest that Professor Marcelo’s other students feel the same.
Aside from being clearly passionate about training and competing in jiu jitsu, Professor Marcelo is also extremely passionate about TEACHING jiu jitsu. You can tell that he loves being on the mats at his school, and he loves sharing his knowledge.
If you are looking to learn a martial art, learn jiu jitsu.
If you are anywhere near this school, go to this school. You will have a great time, and learn rock solid technique from a multi-​time world champion black belt.

I recently turned 37 and decided I wanted to get back in shape. I get bored in the gym so I wanted to find something a little different. After researching various martial arts I decided to try jiu jitsu. San Diego is the mecca of jiu jitsu so there are a lot of options. I tried a few schools in the area and none of them felt like a good match.
I saw Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley and decided to try out their free intro class. From the first time I stepped on the mats I felt like I was part of a family. Professor Marcelo is awesome and has the rare combination of true skill and the passion to teach. He always makes a point of showing the small details that can make or break a technique.
The facilities are great. Everything is spotless and clean. Parking is easy and the location is convenient and close to the freeways and Mira Mesa Blvd.
Whether you are brand new to the sport, or if you have been training for years, I would highly recommend Gracie Barra Sorrento Valley. Take advantage of the free intro class and see for yourself. Hope to see you on the mats!

Excellent instruction from a clearly passionate Professor. The facilities are immaculately clean, training is awesome and students /​staff are friendly and helpful. I started my training over 9 years ago with one of Professor Marcelo’s first black belts and am happy to be training under Professor Marcelo at this new location. Close to the freeway, and plenty of parking.
