HONU BJJ specializes in the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Self Defense and Sport Jiu Jitsu. We take pride in our family atmosphere and give back to the community. Our programs are here to assist any level martial artists, beginner to advanced and kids to adults (both men and women). HONU BJJ has a large Kids and Adult Program bringing families together on the mat.

HONU BJJ is a proud member of the Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Association which the most decorated family in the sport of Jiu Jitsu. One of San Diego’s Best BJJ Schools, we are your choice traditional martial arts in a fun, clean and safe environment. Come by and check out a few classes for free.

History

Established in 2002.

In December of 2012, two long time friends and training partners tossed a series of ideas around ultimately forming HONU BJJ. Coming from two different BJJ lineage umbrellas, they fuzed together a brand that would not only incorporate where they live, their commitment to family, their lifestyle, but also the vision they want others to see.

HONU BJJ is a proud affiliate of the Saulo and Xande Ribeiro Association.

Meet the Business Owner

Shawn F and Branden G.

Business Owner

Shawn Fowler, born in Denver Colorado, is a life long athlete and veteran of the United States Navy. Fowler fell in love with the art of Jiu-​jitsu in his adopted city of San Diego. Holding a Masters Degree in Technology Management, he has supported and ran various Multi-​Million dollar programs for Department of Defense over his career. Fowler currently holds the rank of Black Belt under multiple time world champions, Saulo and Xande Ribeiro and is a active and fierce competitor on the BJJ scene. He also co-​owns the GI Exchange tournament circuit, which brings the best in BJJ competition to San Diego.

Branden Guptill, a veteran of over fifty BJJ and submission grappling tournaments, Branden is an experienced coach for students looking to test themselves on the competitive BJJ circuit. Branden has a BS in political science from UCSD and he currently holds the rank of Brown Belt under multiple time world champions, Saulo and Xande Ribeiro.

Honu Bjj is an amazing place to be a part of. They are very welcoming of ANYONE and it makes you want to come back for more. Shawn and Brandon are great instructors and do alot of charity for the community through the Subcon Bjj competitions. Kids program looks awesome and the open mat is such a good enviorment to be a part of. No bullies. no egos just friendly people always willing to go out of their way to show you anything you are curious about. Don’t be shy come in and check it out it’s fun!

Started as a skeptic. now I’m
hooked! After weeks of watching and sitting on the sidelines I took my 1st step on the mat because these guys called me out and I wasn’t having it.10 000+ beatings later, I’m still here!.. Like most people at HONU I don’t just train to lose weight nor do I train to hoard medals (though it would be nice).we train to learn and the coaches do a great job making sure of it. They push you past your limitations and pull you back to remind u that your not there yet. Overall great character building for both kids and adults.

Since Honu bjj came on the scene (over a year now) they have opened their doors to EVERYONE, holding weekly open mats, guest instructors etc. Always changing and improving their approach to teaching, switching between gi and nogi, bringing in judo instructors and so on. They have worked and continue to work hard to mold their students into monsters on the mat, warmups are grueling. (my complaint), they will scream at you… (with a smile on their face), push you past what you thought was your limit… but in the end, shake hands, hug it out and say «see you guys and gals tomorrow»… Great Team down in my city… #cityheightsson! #turtlepower

If you are considering learning the art of Brazilian Jiujitsu look no further and train at Honu BJJ. I had the opportunity to train at a few schools before deciding that Honu BJJ is the ideal place.
First off, Honu BJJ is a Ribeiro Jiujitsu affiliated school. If you don’t know who the Ribeiro Brothers are you need to look them up because they are two of the most accomplished BJJ practitioners/​fighters in the world. This establishes a strong Jiujitsu lineage and promotes a great sense of team pride.
Secondly, the level of instruction and encouragement you get from Branden and Shawn is second to none. Both are accomplished competitors and all around great guys. Branden and Shawn are willing to do what it takes to help you achieve your goal whether it is competition or just improving your game. The environment they created is definitely the most family oriented I’ve been around. It’s a great place for women to train and the kid’s program is awesome.
Lastly, the school is unpretentious. In a humble studio with just a huge mat space and pull up bars, their only focus is jiujitsu. Centrally located off the 15 freeway in San Diego and parking is a non issue. Come check out Honu BJJ… you won’t regret it. Cheers!!!

Honu Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is gotta be one of the best Jits places in town. Layed back Island vibe when everything is relaxed but it’s top class down to business BJJ when class starts. They have phenomenal Kid’s classes too! The instructors are great and there are no contracts to lock you in. They even got a free introductory class. The school is clean, simple and everyone is super supportive. Definitely no steroid muscle head douche-​baggery going down here. Just the love of Brazilian Jits and coming in, putting in work and leaving that your better off than when you entered. Monthly rate has got to be the best in San Diego hands down for the fitness and level of instruction. If you want to learn BJJ in a real deal technical environment or you just want to get fit, shed those pounds or just want to know what BJJ is all about, You gotta check out Honu! They get it.
