History

Established in 1953.

Welcome to the Inn at Sunset Cliffs located in historical Point Loma, California. We are one of only a few San Diego hotels truly located on the Pacific Ocean, just steps away from Ocean Beach. Originally built in the 1950’s, we have recently completed remodeling the 24 room inn thus creating a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere to accommodate any San Diego visitor.

No other San Diego hotel offers a view as breathtaking as from our spacious terrace overlooking the Cliffs, Ocean Beach and as far as La Jolla.

Our terrace offers a panoramic 180-​degree ocean view with the scenic Ocean Beach pier in the background. Enjoy the million-​dollar view during the day and the sound of the crashing waves at night.

Stayed here a couple of years ago for a beach wedding. The view from my room was amazing!!! Service was great as was the breakfast every morning. Great little market about walking distance from the hotel. Right on the water you can see the navy ships float by as your looking a sea shells!!! Perfect way to spend a vacation!!! Even lost my id in the parking lot and the lady at the front desk actually sent it back to me with a very sweet note!!!

I absolutely love this place! The ocean & sunset views were fantastic. They have a nice clean swimming pool and the grounds & fauna were beautiful. You can hear the ocean waves crashing from anywhere you are, including your room. The staff was so friendly & helpful. It’s located a little out of town but that’s the beauty of the place. No crazy night creatures or partying until all hours of the night. The room was clean & nicely decorated with tile. The beds and furniture were very comfortable. I will definitely come back here!

You are definitely paying for location at this place and that’s about it. The room was nothing special. It actually could use an update. We stayed in room 212. I didn’t sit on the couch or chairs because they were kind of disgusting as seen in pics. The beds/​bedding were clean but the beds were very noisy. The laminate flooring was warped in some spots so they creeked when you stepped in certain spots. There was one remote to control all the TVs which wasn’t a huge deal as we weren’t there for TVs. The bathroom although tiny was clean and looked new/​updated. Based on the room review I would give them 3 stars but, the views were amazing and service was super friendly. So I added a star. If the room/​furniture was updated they would definitely deserve a 5 star rating! I would definitely stay here again as the issues were not anything that couldn’t be an easy fix. They also have beautiful roses that smell amazing located on the property.

I took my husband for a one night staycation for his birthday. This place is a gem! They have an amazing patio that is right on the edge of sunset cliffs with an unobstructed view of the ocean and sunset. Our room (king studio) was clean, spacious and there were 2 separate shower heads in the shower which was a nice treat. You can hear the waves crashing as you sleep, which was heaven. The staff was also super courteous. It’s a short walk from great restaurants and shop. We had a wonderful time!

Our friends recommended the Inn at Sunset Cliffs, but I initially discounted their enthusiasm. After two days, I am a big fan as well. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff are friendly and chill, the location is in the sweet spot between the Cliffs and OB activity. And the view is just… killer.

Probably the craziest check-​in experience I’ve ever had… but in the best possible way! My girlfriend and I were going through normal check-​in procedures when one of the managers went into the back office to get some paperwork. Before he came back, epic music started blasting in the lobby (think Lord of the Rings soundtrack)… next thing we know, the manager is walking back in to the main office with a microphone and starts MC’ing the «Sunset Cliffs Trivia Show». Needless to say, we were totally confused, but surprisingly willing to play along with their game.
Long story short, we answered several questions correctly (while actually having a lot of fun with the game) and were rewarded with 10% off our bill (for life!) At the end, we were also given the opportunity to select one of four envelopes, with each containing a different prize. My incredibly luck girlfriend chose the envelope that upgraded us from our normal room to the Garvie suite for the night, at our original room rate. Basically, a $ 400 upgrade. After the game was finished, we found out that we were the first people that they ever played this game with… I think it worked out pretty well for us :)
The Garvie Suite is their presidential suite that overlooks the ocean right above Sunset Cliffs, and it’s really a great room. It has a giant hot tub situated in between two sets of ocean-​facing double french doors. We left the doors open overnight and slept really well, with the ocean waves being the last sound we heard at night, and the first sound that we awoke to in the morning. There is truly nothing better than falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean.
I can’t thank the Inn at Sunset Cliffs enough for giving us such an incredible experience, and we are very grateful for the generous surprise that they rewarded us with. I hope to go back soon!

Had the perfect stay at the inn at sunset cliffs! The staff was very welcoming and accommodating to any request we had. We we’re surprised to find out we were even able to fish right off their lower terrace. The sunsets we’re beautiful, we even got some glimpses of dolphins in the distance.
We stayed in a one bedroom kitchen suite which was very clean and comforting, felt like we were staying in a little cottage. It was nice being able to cook out freshly caught fish and LOBSTERS right in our room or on the provided grill/​BBQ. The property also has a heated swimming pool.
We were very pleased with the tranquil and romantic atmosphere while on our vacation to San Diego! We will be recommending this hotel and coming back again!

This is a beautiful place to stay. We got a two bedroom suite. It was very clean and comfortable. The views were breath taking from both bedrooms. You can easily hear the waves from inside and the patio is great for relaxing. We sat by the fire and enjoyed the stars and the sound of the ocean. We also walked along sunset cliffs during the sunset. It is my favorite place on earth.

Amazing locations and grounds! I attend sunset yoga once a week and cannot believe the patio location overlooking the ocean. If you’re traveling to San Diego you must stay here at least one night to enjoy the views and the amazing property!

Fantastic location — right on the cliffs, ocean views, waves crashing, pelicans flying all around. They’ve done a really nice job landscaping, with tons of flowers, potted plants and rose bushes. A simple pool (heated) in the courtyard. Wish they had a jacuzzi! Service was very friendly and welcoming.
We stayed for one night for our anniversary in a 2-​bedroom suite — 2 small bedrooms, living room, desk, and mini-​fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Some ocean view from the living room and bedroom windows. We had a really nice stay. Enjoyed taking a dip in the pool, and hanging out on the ocean view patio, playing games, enjoying a glass of wine in the evening, an cup of coffee in the morning. We got a gift certificate for the room at a silent auction, but otherwise, $ 289/​night + tax; pretty pricey. But, location, location, location.
Free yoga for guests on the deck overlooking the guests Thursday night ($ 14 for non-​guests). They had a big turnout last night. Might have to come back and check it out.
Slept to the sound of the crashing waves (actually, didn’t sleep too much — our bed was not comfortable; wish I’d tried out the one in the other room; it was much better). But overall, a very relaxing stay. Would definitely recommend it, especially for couples.

Don’t get me wrong– this is a SUPERB location! Location, Location, Location is what this hotel is about. The view is amazing, we sat on their rocking chairs for over an hour just drinking beer and it was great! The hotel is very cute. Downers– the rooms are small– the door and bed have about a foot inbetween. And in our weeklong trip up the coast, this was our most expensive hotel night.
If you are about all day beach and ocean views, this is for you! We did walk into town and it wasn’t that bad.

You can’t beat the sound of the waves crashing in on the scenic cliffs, and the hotel is the perfect place to relax and watch a sunset or two. We spent two nights, and did what other guests were doing, enjoying a picnic, bbq or fire pit, with a bottle of wine and beers out on the scenic patio on their comfy deck furniture and watched the sunset show.
The front desk person was very helpful. He pointed out parking, coffee and tea in the lobby, free wifi, and ice machine, swimming pool and towels.
Even the smallest rooms downstairs have a fridge, microwave, a/​c and all room have new flooring, updated décor and tile bathrooms, with nice bedding, and my favorite-​coffee mugs and wine glasses, not plastic cups. The grounds are loaded with flowering plants and hanging baskets.
First floor rooms may be noisy from people walking overhead, but the 5 star location and crashing waves offset it. We walked to a restaurant less than a half mile on Sunset Cliffs Drive and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

I heard about this place a while back. I stayed in pacific beach for 4 months last summer and never got a chance to check it out. The exterior and garden in the middle are pretty damn amazing to say the least. Perfect lighting, the roses make you feel like youre in some kind of movie.
Not to confuse you with the fact that this is the same place from VM. For those Veronica Mars fans out there, this is the place she lived at the in show.
The rooms are nicely updated, I could wish for a larger TV though, those are pretty puny. The bed was soft (but squeeked like crazy) the pillows were soft as well. So I have to downgrade because of that. Its my personal preference to have a more firm bed, I do have back problems. So the softness and the softness of the pillows did not give me enough support. But like I said thats my personal preference.
The view was good, but I have also seen better, and stayed at better places and for less. Theres no real beach access, because theres no real beach right there. Service was good, their office is open 24⁄7 if you need anything. But I have stayed in places with much nicer views for better prices.
With no real beach access, an ok view, squeeky beds and small tvs and a bit higher in price that other places I have stayed…
Overall i can only give this place 3 out of 5 stars.

If you’re looking to get away from it all, then the Inn at Sunset Cliffs may be your spot.
As the name would suggest, the Inn is located smack dab in the middle of the cliffs. From the patio, which is surrounded by flowers and shrubs that are beautifully landscaped, you can view the staggering coast line, the ocean, and the pier at Ocean Beach. The setting cannot be beat if you’re looking for tranquility.
If you’ve had enough quiet time, then you’re conveniently located just 20 minutes by foot from Ocean Beach and all that that neighborhood has to offer. If you’d prefer not to travel by foot, there’s a bus stop located about ½ a block away that will take you into OB, as well as around Point Loma.
So, location? Five stars. Hands down.
As for the inn itself, well, the bed may have been one of the most uncomfortable, squeaky things that I have ever slept on. The mattress was so hard that I may as well have slept on the ground. Uncomfortable bed aside, our room was very small, but also very clean. We were happy to find that the A/​C was a champ, you know, since we’re from Denver and the high 60’s felt sweltering in February.
So, the room? Three stars. Being generous because, really, those beds need to G-​O.
All in all, the location was worth a less than great night’s sleep and if I were to return to San Diego, I’d likely consider booking here again!

I’m not sure how it got such good reviews… I guess I got stuck in the worst room.
I checked in kinda late after supercross on Feb 8th for $ 170 one night. The guy at the front desk had few words to say. Didn’t say where to park or if there was breakfast… Nothing. I go to walk into the room and it’s literally just a bed… Nothing else fits. And who’s gonna use that tiny tv?! It’s smaller than my computer screen. The early morning I was disturbed by people walking above non-​stop. –this is the last thing you want staying in a hotel.
Okay, the place was clean and the view/​location was 5 star. That’s the only 5 star about it.
Oh AND the bed was a pos it was so squeaky I couldn’t even roll over without it screeching at me.

I absolutely LOVE this place. We had our wedding here and it was utterly perfect! We got married here on 09÷07÷13 and I wouldn’t change anything about our fantastic day. Gavin (the hotel manager/​events coordinator) was amazing and a pleasure to work with. He made sure the day went off without a hitch and took away any worry that we may have had. This is a great location to get married and have a reception at, everything is close by and the venue is so gorgeous that there really is not too much need for additional decorations. The staff is incredible and made my friends and family feel so welcome. If you are looking for a place to get married in OB, look no further, you couldn’t find anything better than The Inn at Sunset Cliffs. Thanks again guys for making our day better than we could have asked for!

My husband and I stayed in the Presidential Suite for one night after our wedding at The Thursday Club. At a little over $ 500 per night it was a huge splurge for us, but obviously we wanted something special for that night. We had a wonderful experience. The view is the main draw of this room, not to mention the sound of the waves crashing outside. The spa tub in the room is super fun!
The staff also went above and beyond to clean the room immediately when the previous couple left so that I could check into the room and use it to get dressed for the wedding. Our friends and family stayed here and had nothing but positive feedback. You can’t beat the location and views!

Perfect day for a Wedding celebration !!! Oh I just LOVE weddings !
I was fortunate to witness the joining of two ‘in love’ newlyweds (Congrats Marianne and Ben!). I can see why they chose this site as their reception ! Love was definitely in the air!
It’s pretty close to what I envision as my ‘ideal’ wedding spot to look like. Outdoors and by the water ! Small and intimate with close family and friends. This location had just that and more.

Fluffy, marshmallow clouds, baby blue skies, the sound of the calm waves and the smell of the ocean, with a touch of the crisp breeze blowing through you as the sun slowly sets. /​sigh
Nature was at work on this beautiful, magical day. What more could you ask for? The view alone was truly, truly BREATHTAKING ! Everyone was in awe of the view !
