I would give this place more stars if I could, completely amazing awesome wonderful sushi, staff are friendly and attentive. This is one of my favorite places to go and pretty much the only sushi place I go to. The tempura bacon sounds strange, but it is really good. Fish is fresh and excellent quality. Daily rolls, daily sashimi and specials are out of this world fantastic. They do have a cooked menu as well and everything on that is stellar too. But I do sashimi when I go here.

Best sushi in the Mira Mesa area and beyond. Best staff and the owner is a kick if you sit at the sushi bar. Their Daily menu is always delicious with colorful flavor and presentation. I was not a sashimi fan until I started eating at Kappa. I’m in there every weekend for at least 9 months and NEVER had any low quality or fishy fish. Outstanding!

This place has kind of made me a sushi snob. Every time I try another sushi place I just always compare it to Kappa. The Green Mile and the Sancho roll are the rolls I constantly get. My boyfriend loves their Kitchen Sink Roll because its fried and has cream cheese. I constantly bring new people here and they always end up loving the place and going there on their own time.

002⁄100 — 2016 Unilocal100CHALLENGE. The only sushi place I like in Mira Mesa. There are tons of sushi joints, but none that are super crazy amazing. The fish is fresh, the quality is pretty decent(imo), and they’ve got an awesome selection of rolls. I have tried some of their appetizers and they aren’t that amazing, so I would recommend spending your money on the sashimi or actual rolls. My favorite roll here is the K Roll. SO. EFFIN. GOOD. I also usually get some of the protein rolls — it’s pretty interesting that they have riceless rolls, but it works for those who are doing keto/low carb diets. I like to eat them because it’s just protein lololol. I think my favorite thing at Kappa Sushi, though, is the tempura fried ice cream. I am a basic b so I just get vanilla, but ughghghg it’s just ridiculously delicious. Deep fried food is typically not my thing(makes my stomach queasy if I have too much of it), but I will eat my body weight in tempura fried ice cream. YUM. Service is always great here, but the restaurant can be cramped and over crowded. I feel very claustrophobic sometimes.

Super yummy. Casual and clean atmosphere! Jessica is awesome! She has a huge smile and remembers your name. I’ve been here 6 times, twice the service was a little slow but on average the staff is fast and has good energy! Happy hour daily from 5 – 6:30!

I’m generally not a big seafood person but this place makes me change my mind. They have unique rolls and professional sushi chefs that make fresh creative rolls that you find anywhere else. My favorite is the Tasmanian devil roll and the Kappa Monster roll which comes with its own citrus sauce that is awesome! They have Japanese beer and some local craft beer on tap. If 2 or less people I recommend sitting at the sushi bar for the best service. It gets busy so make a reservation or go early to account for a long wait.

We came here for dinner to meet a couple of friends after making a day trip to SD from the OC. Usually, when it comes to sushi, I have a tendency to cringe when anyone brings up a sushi place that’s not all you can eat(AYCE). I’m not saying this because I’m a cheap ass; by no means at all, I will pay the cost if the food and venue really is worth it. But with sushi, it just isn’t worth the cost per roll or nigiri at typical sushi restaurants. Fortunately, the time we showed up at Kappa Sushi was when happy hour was going on! Though I was a bit surprised that happy hour was taking place during a Sunday night, I always welcome the thought of discounted rolls and food, especially when that means you can get more bang for your buck! After getting the Kitchen Sink and the El Diablo, I was pretty content and satisfied(although I definitely could have eaten more). I wouldn’t say that this would be a regular place I would go to, even if I did live around the block from it, but I sure wouldn’t mind swinging by once in a while when I’m back in the area to visit friends and when happy hour is going on.

I’ve seen this place plenty of times but always thought it was closed or being renovated because of the dark windows. I decided to try it during my lunch break today since I work around the corner. There was a good amount of people seated inside so I decided to take my food to go so it’d be quicker. The hosts & servers were friendly and attentive and my roll only took 10 minutes to be ready to eat, so all of that was a plus. However, looking over the menu, the food was pretty pricey– even for sushi. I chose the Crunchy roll(shrimp tempura) which came out to a little over $ 10. Normally I wouldn’t be too upset about that price but the roll itself was super small, hardly«crunchy», and pretty flavorless. Maybe their specialty rolls and other menu items are better, and maybe eating it in-house is a little better too, but I doubt I’ll be coming back. If you’re looking for a good sushi place in the area– with reasonable prices– I recommend Todo Sushi a couple minutes away.

I love this place. I happened upon it the first week Miles opened it a few years back. I was impressed with the quality of the sushi and the creativeness of the rolls. I know from other sushi chefs I have cultivated over the years that most don’t like preparing the«American-style» rolls Miles is Hawaiian and seems to enjoy creating new rolls. He is also non-traditional in a number of ways. He has non-Japanese chefs and even(gasp) women working the sushi bar. If that bothers you, this won’t be for you. The first year or so my son could get in any time and sit chatting with Miles. But, by the second year, the lines are long any time you go for dinner. This is the only reason I cannot quite give them 5 stars. It can be crowded, loud and sometimes slow at the tables. Bottom line is that Miles will only serve the best he can get. It costs more, but it is worth it. Once during the first, slow year, he was lamenting to me that he had to raise prices because of the cost of the fish he was buying. But, he insistent, he refused to skimp on quality. The other surprising thing for a sushi place is that the stuff out of the kitchen is equally good. The Ahi tacos are terrific. You might expect this to be a dish in which they use all the non-ideal ahi they get. Not so! While it may include pieces that were odd shaped and couldn’t be used for sushi, the quality is just as good. In response to Reza J, yes, I’m a white guy. But, I know fish, trust me. Japanese friends of mine have criticized the non-traditional aspects of Kappa. But none have dissed the actual fish.

My mom goes here almost everyday since she works nearby, and ever since bringing me along with her one day, I can’t stop coming here. It is absolutely phenomenal. The food is amazing — always fresh, flavorful, perfectly cooked and hot if that’s what the dish calls for, reasonably priced for the quality, and beautifully presented. However, even more amazing are the people who work here. The owner, Eric, welcomes every guest warmly and was super personable, kind, and caring during all of our visits. We also always try to sit at the sushi bar because Kathy works there, and she not only makes delicious sushi but is very friendly. By far one of the friendliest and most attentive wait staff. The cherry on top of the cake is the atmosphere of the restaurant. Obviously very welcoming and warm, but also nicely decorated, lively, and always clean. I can’t say enough good things about this place. If you love sushi, great food in general, or amazing service, this is your place.

I’m scratching my head as to where all these good reviews came from. Not to sound racist but my guess is these are all white people or people who’ve never had good sushi leaving these reviews(for the record I’m not Asian). So let’s begin… I’ve never had such overpriced and mediocre(both quality and portion size) sushi. Tried their sriacha wings, lacked anything resembling that flavor, nor were they spicy… Not even a little bit. The sushi rolls were literally the smallest rolls I’ve ever came across in the hundreds of sushi places I’ve been to. I mean we’re talking rolls as thick as double stuffed Oreos with diameters smaller than a silver dollar. Their happy hour roll that cost $ 5 was ten times better than their top shelf roll we got for $ 15(sancho) and if that roll was any indicator of the rest of their top shelf rolls then wow… They need help. The service was good(the only reason for the 2nd star). Friendly staff and fast service, but really the buck stops there. When I read the their reviews regarding portion, quality, and prices I only had one thought… These are either friends of the owners/workers or some poor souls who’ve never had good sushi and don’t even know what they’re really missing out on in life. If you’re a true sushi lover trust me… This isn’t the place for you. As always, this just could have been an off night for the place. if you have Asian/Mexican/whatever friends chances are they’ve taken you to a good Asian/Mexican/whatever restaurant and you know the difference between good/bad food. I can say with confidence, if you really love sushi you won’t like this place… But hey if you wanna pay $ 50 to learn a lesson then so be it.

Overpriced! Ordered the sashimi special for lunch, Fyi doesn’t come with rice and miso. Paid $ 14 for 6 slices of sashimi which were of only salmon and«white tuna» Not albacore. The quality of the fish wasn’t worth the price. Should’ve gone to gyu ka ku.

There are many sushi/japanese places to eat in the Mira Mesa area. We have not tried to place before so why not? We were seated right away for an early dinner for 3. The restaurant was nicely decorated with a modern flair. It was busy due to their happy hour. We ordered the Walu sushi, kinmadei sushi, some nigiris and for my son 2 pieces of grilled spams and rice. The quality is good but the price is a little expensive. I mean 2 pieces of spam and rice for $ 9! The fish was fresh, sliced nicely and just enough rice on their sushi and nigiris. The service was great and everyone was friendly and attentive. Our food came out fairly quickly. We may try this place again… For the price, we have had better sushi and quality. For their quality, there are definitely more inexpensive places to go with better selection of rolls. I would go back for the atmosphere if I had extra cash to burn.

Okay so I’m a huge sushi buff and it takes a lot to disappoint me. But gosh darn it I was disappointed. All of the riceless rolls were $ 14 which is way overpriced for something that just has cucumber and tuna. Going with rice rolls, they were nothing special. I got the Sancho roll which was Cajan shrimp and blue crab with Cajan albacore on top. There wasn’t much flavor and the crab was really dry. It came with a spicy dipping sauce with mostly tasted like jalapeño and herb which was good but didn’t match well with the Cajan flavor. I also had an eel roll which was good but that’s good everywhere. We had miso soup, edamame and my sister had the lemon roll and spicy yellowtail. I will say the lemon roll was very fresh and good. If I were to go back is order that. All in all the food was good but I regret ordering the Sancho.

Sadly, I wasn’t very impressed with this place. I came here for an early dinner at 5pm on a Saturday when I was starving. My friend and I ordered the seaweed salad appetizer, tempura avocado, tempura bacon, and some rolls. Appetizers: The seaweed salad was pretty good. They give a generous portion for how much they charge. The tempura avocado was interesting. Pretty good but a little bland. I wish there was some sauce to go with it. The bacon tempura wasn’t great. The cut of bacon they used was too fatty for my taste and the spicy sauce that came on the side was too thick and lackluster. Rolls: I got the albacore special(I think that was the name) with the sauce on the side because the menu said it was spicy and I can’t really handle spicy. The roll was smaller than expected and the sauce wasn’t spicy at all. The albacore on top was pretty thin and to be honest, it didn’t look to appealing to me. My friend got the roll of the day which was better. The service was fine. We had two waiters because I think one of them was training. No biggy, everyone has to start somewhere. Overall, not too shabby. Might come back and try something different on the menu.

Kappa is awesome! They have a wide variety of rolls and everything is very fresh. They definitely have the best selection of vegetarian rolls in SD(sorry sushi deli!). Happy hour is every day and goes until 6:30. The staff are super friendly and helpful and service is quick. If you’re in the Mira Mesa area, I highly recommend you stop by Kappa. It is located in the same center as Trader Joe’s and Gyu Kaku. Parking can be challenging, but I usually find a spot within a few minutes.

Small sushi place, huge portions! You definitely get what you pay for. Each roll is 10 – 15 bucks average, but you get about 12 pieces each roll. My wife and I ordered 3 rolls just to snack and we ended up getting very full. We ordered the chronic, dragon, and kitchen sink rolls. All were very good! Staff is friendly and service is quick. I highly recommend this place!

Nice to have a quality sushi place nearby. Over the past four years whenever I walk by, it always seems really busy! I recommend getting here early, right when they open. On my last visit, my date and I shared the tempura bacon. It’s definitely a unique item, but it didn’t really taste like bacon. I did enjoy the sweet dipping sauce. For my main meal, I went with the unagi or eel roll. The ingredients were fresh and the rice was tasty. I appreciate that their sushi rolls aren’t heavy on the rice. There’s nothing is worse than getting filled up on carbs and not having and room for dessert. All in all, Kappa Sushi is a good place to grab dinner before or after a movie. With the recent additions of Gyu-Kaku and Calibanzo, the parking is getting a bit tough, but you should be able to find a spot eventually.

My boyfriend & I were mad craving Hamachi Kama, the best part/collar of the Yellowtail, & were Unilocaling to find a restaurant nearby. & Kappa Sushi came up! We arrived about 45 minutes before its afternoon break & it was busy. Our server was sweet & attentive & we ordered: Miso Soup — It was room temperature & not hot… Salmon Belly Nigiri — Good & fresh. Sancho Roll — No wonder this is one of the highlighted items on Unilocal! It is so delicious! I have never gotten Albacore before on a roll & I am glad that I got to try it on this. In addition, the dipping sauce is to die for! I have no idea what it is made of but it makes the sushi just that more yummy. Kitchen Sink Roll — Deep fried goodness! It was the perfect bite of everything. Hamachi Kama — Mm! You cannot go wrong with this! So tender & flavorful. Watch out for the bones! Salmon Kama — This is good as well, but it does not compare to Hamachi Kama! Watch out for the bones!

Hands down my new favorite spot! This was my second visit to Kappa! The first time was back in 2011 with Mrs. JoJo and I didn’t remember much then. After eating clean and training dirty. It was time to reward thy self with some sashimi y sushi, a few bottles of saki, and beers with my fam the Discotorns and my Producer. Started off with Saba and monkfish liver or shall I say foie gras of the sea… from the specials menu. Can’t go wrong with these two both delicious and generous portion of foie gras. For those of you trying to avoid rice! Order all of the Kappa Rice Less rolls! All good, but I recommend ordering the Stay Puff with less dynamite sauce. The boys ordered sashimi salad, yakisoba, and some other rolls. We had plenty to feed our faces. Lastly my favorite dessert, fried bourbon pecan ice cream in the shape of a sushi roll and sliced! We were thinking a ball of ice cream. Service was awesome and even though they were busy the food was delivered to us quickly.
