I had their bacon breakfast burrito. It was just potatoes mainly and all the bacon was on one side of the burrito. This place is sub-par. Only good for when you’re leaving the neighboring bars/clubs. I honestly would rather go to La Fuente’s across the street. Their salsa is mediocre, and their prices are too much for the quality. Decent food for high prices. They do give me delivery and post mates if you’re absolutely desperate. BUT if you’re gonna do that, deliver something more authentic and reputable? I think they’re in business because of their strategic location is all. Nothing too special.

$ 18 later I had decent ceviche and two kids meals for my kids with drinks. The gentleman at the counter was super nice, everything is clean, and I got a mountain of chips with my food. Nice little salsa bar.

Grabbed a fish taco for a snack. Fresh with generous portions of fish. A little heavy on the onions, but not drowned in sauce.

I came here last night with a friend for some after drinks food. I was excited that they have beef tamales and immediately asked for two with no toppings and a Mexican Coke. The tamales came out looking good but on the side there was lattice and salsa, yet I let it pass. There was this red sauce in the filling of the tamale that I can’t place but it didn’t make it spicy. I felt satisfied until I came home. Three hours later, my stomach is in pain and I can’t sleep. I’m stuck in the bathroom for twice that night because of slight food poisoning(I like to think I have a strong stomach). It was not a good experience and I will not be going back.

I have only ordered«The Hillcrest» special here and I must say, it’s pretty darn good. For $ 7, you get 4 mini pastor tacos(choice of chicken or pork) and it comes with rice, beans, and a drink. What a deal! The meat is well seasoned and they spoon in generous dollops of guacamole on the tacos. They also have a pretty good selection of salsas and pickled veggies(jalapenos, carrots, onions, and cabbage). The place feels clean. The employees are nice. The portions are huge. The price is right. What more can you ask for?

$ 2 Taco Tuesday: beef, chicken, potato, or veggie. This place has a wide variety of other tacos, like pastor, but those aren’t discounted on Tuesdays.

Ok. I love black beans. They make black bean and cheese burritos with the option of wheat or regular tortilla. Love, love, love this place! Guys are very friendly and quick! Good for this nurse on the run! Thanks!

Have not been here for a while. Never really eaten in the premises, always bought take out. My favorite is still the Carnitas plate. However, there are days when I ask not to add the beans(not a fan of any refried/baked), they give me more rice instead. This last visit, they just gave me the same portion without the beans. Brian my significant other wanted tacos. They only have shredded beef not ground, I guess that is not the mexican style for making the old fashioned tacos(I doubt it the Taco/Del Taco/JIB version contains much beef either. The shell is fried(I tried it, a bit tough). I guess I will have to stick to the carnitas plate. Sometimes the meat is shredded completely, sometimes chunk. Salsa bar has sufficient sauces(mild, med and hot) peppers(yellow/jalapeño) and limes/lemons. I can’t speak to the other items on the menu except maybe the tostada which Brian used to like.

Just ordered a chicken asada burrito with guac. The price was almost 9 bucks! I was really hungry and I asked if it’s a big burrito because the price… which the guy behind the counter said it’s 6 – 7 ounces of chicken. Anyway, I got it, went home, opened it up and I kid you not… probably 5 – 6 small nuggets of chicken and smidge of guac. I could not f’ing believe it. What a sham! I will never, ever go there again. Stay away! Trust me here folks! What a RIP!

The food is super good. im surprised it’s not super busy! The restaurant is in a hidden shipping area off university. I highly recommend getting the chicken quesedilla or chicken chimichanga. The staff is really nice and welcoming. So if your looking for a good mexican food for breakfast lunch or dinner come here!

The line to lucha libre was way too long and the other Mexican spot was closed. Stopped by Lola’ s and my first impression was what do they not offer. So many choices to choose from on the menu. Ordered a bit of everything. Nachos, surf and turf burrito, rolled tacos. Everything tasted good. The nachos were super delish with a bit of carne asada, rolled tacos wasn’t a bif fan of but the lettuce was a great salad, and the burrito tasted great, amazing amount of shrimp n meat. Great service as well…

I REALLY wanted to like the food here. The menu seemed very large for such a small place. When I saw they had a chili relleno burrito I really wanted it, bad! What I got wasn’t a chili relleno burrito. There was a chili relleno in it, but it was so small wrapped in too much egg and very little cheese and too much rice. Well I ate about ¼−½ thinking the cheese was in the other end, when I came to the end of the relleno. Ugh! :( They remade it for me, and said they added extra cheese. This time I brought it home and heated it up later for dinner. When I cut it in half I should have been oozing cheese, NOPE very little cheese again, small relleno and too much egg and rice. If I wanted an 5.25 egg and rice burrito, I would have made one myself at home and not pay 5.25 for it. Well I was hungry so I ate half with their chipotle salsa(very good flavor) and it made the burrito taste better. Their beans and horchatha are also just so-so. Disappointed to say the least. I won’t be going back.

I like this place especially their black bean veggie burrito. Plus their salsas are all really good. My boyfriend doesn’t like this place as much as other taco shops bc he says their burritos are way smaller but I like it better bc I feel like they aren’t as greasy.

very small joint off University, near Trader Joe’s //good place to stop for a few quick tacos and a beer, without any complications or crowds //nice lady took out order, the tacos(pastor & carnitas) were pretty darn good + an array of fresh homemade salsas from mild to root canal hot It’s ok — not bad /not great — ok

Lalo’s was a place that I’ve passed by a gazillion times but never bothered to even stop by to check it out, well this Saturday night was time to see if they have some good taco shop grub. When you walk in you’re greeted with this cool looking menu that hangs over( ) the cashier area. While their menu looks like they took a lot of effort to make, its kinda hard to read or maybe my eyesight is going bad. Either way, I had to get closer to make out some of the menu items. Lalo’s caters to the Hillcrest crowd pretty good, they have plenty of vegetarian options and the ability to sub things out. What perhaps bothered me the most about their menu is they seem to add mushrooms to everything, I have never seen a taco shop so in love with mushrooms before. I personally hate mushrooms, maybe this is a little bias of me. Okay, the coolest thing about this place that I found was their amazing salsa bar( ). This place has six different types of sauces including free limes, peppers, carrots and more. Nothing makes you more happy than seeing a baggy next to the hot carrots so you can take some home. The sauces here were all pretty spot on, they have mild to extremely hot(being the habanero sauce). I personally loved the picante sauce the most, best mix of flavor and spiciness. Now for their food, I wasn’t too impressed at all. Their California burrito( ) was utterly small compared to pretty much any San Diego shop I’ve been to, it was perhaps a bit bigger than a taco bell burrito that you may encounter. Inside their California they had your choice of meat, shoe string fries, guac and cheese( ). I did not care for the meat at all, I don’t know if the cook messed up or what, but it was really burnt inside. Not only that, since it was burnt, it had a lot of grease all over it, some people may like the toasty grease effect, but I do not. The guac here( ) was another issue for me, it didn’t taste like avocados really, I wonder if they add sour cream to it to fill in for some avocados? Either way, I didn’t care for the guacamole here. The deluxe quesadilla( ) was another let down for me. While they added lots of guac and sour cream, it kinda lacked cheese. Lack of cheese in a quesadilla is a big mistake. I asked them to add beans, lettuce, tomatoes and no mushrooms. While they added a bit of beans, there was more mushrooms than anything in that quesadilla. I don’t get the mushroom thing, like I said before I detest them. Lalo’s was a big let down for me, I wasn’t really too excited to even finish my food, which I always wind up doing, even when it goes into the fridge for leftovers. Perhaps the only thing that saved Lalo’s a star, was their amazing salsa bar. I might suggest trying their tacos instead of the burritos though.

I don’t think I’ve ever given out a one star review. Well unfortunately this is the first. I’ve lived in the area just over a year and have been here approximately 6 – 7 times. For those who read my reviews know my taco shop experiences revolve around my love for a good carna asada burrito and taco. Sad to say but lalos is a complete miss. I’ve thought to myself numerous times«maybe this time will be better.» Carna asada tacos– cold low quality meat. Guacamole color on the brown side and not very appetizing. Carna asada burrito– cold low quality meat, cold hard tortillas and just no bueno! One time I swore they pulled my burrito from under the counter or out of the fridge and served it to me. It came out so fast that if it was supposedly made fresh it would have been slightly warm. It was not. This burrito came out by the time I finished pouring my salsas and was cold. That to me says that they gave me a left over burrito. I’ve never had back to back experiences like this. Sorry Lalo but you will no longer get my money.

I really want to love it here, but I haven’t found anything I LOVE yet. I think it’s the beans. When you’re ordering vegetarian stuff(and they do have a great vegetarian selection), the beans have got to be on point. These beans are just meh. They do have a great salsa bar, and all the salsas are good. And, service is great. Just wish those beans were better…
