REALMEXICANFOOD. I will happily drive 30 minutes just to eat a bowl of beans with rice and chorizo. They have a simple menu and offer a handful of items(rolled tacos, tacos dorados, tamale de bola tortillas de harina hechos a mano, spicy salsa), but oh boy do they all hit that desire for good ol Mexican mom home made food. They are the only restaurant I go out of my way to visit just for the beans. Hands down nothing compares to this spot. Greeted everytime by a welcoming motherly type of lady that refers to you as mija or mijo and makes you feel you are apart of her familia, yes, yes all yes. I will be coming here for beans till the day the doors close which I hope is never. FYI they are closed Sundays and are cash only.

The chorizo con huevos is good stuff, same with the rolled tacos. Limited/simple menu but delicious and well prepared. The line wasn’t bad either, yes, out the door but fast moving at mid-day. Lots of seating too, no frills but fans running so not unbearable heat. If I want a burrito I do El Zarape on Park though.

Countless friends and acquaintances have thrown the name«Las Cuatro Milpas» around during our conversations and it was on my Unilocal bookmark for quite some time. During a lazy Saturday afternoon, my fiancé and I decided to make the trip to the Barrio Logan neighborhood for some Mexican brunch! We arrived at 2:30pm, 30 minutes before closing time, and there were still a lot of patrons coming in for dine-in and takeouts. Be aware that hours are from 6am(8:30am on weekdays) to 3:00pm. Come here early to beat the lunch rush. And bring cash! The menu is simple. You will find chorizo, beans and rice with huevo on top if you are in the mood for breakfast, rolled tacos or tacos. From what I have read online, the tortillas are the«old fashioned» kind cooked in lard. There was a nice lady in line asking for«menudo»(blanco version of tripe soup), available only early Saturday mornings. Too late and you miss it! The precious thing about Las Cuatro Milpas is that it is a family-run business passed on from generations to generations. The Mexican ladies behind the cafeteria-stye counter are the epitome of multitasking! Busy cooking, placing orders, and helping the grandma ring up orders at the cash register, their warmth and helpfulness, in addition to good food, maintains a line of loyal patrons wrapped around the block. It is also a shared experience with other customers too. We chatted with other customers sitting around us… a really friendly dining experience. We ordered 3 rolled tacos, 2 crunchy tacos, beans and rice and a side of the tortillas for less than $ 20. The rolled tacos and tacos were hot and crispy, stuffed with generous portions of shredded chicken and pork, garnished with lettuce and sour cream. They also have crushed chile pepper hot sauce, but my fiancé prefers the salsa from Vallartas. Nevertheless, they have extra onions, lime and cilantro at the counter. Michael Gardiner, writer of the San Diego Beat, said that the universal badge of ethnic food excellence is the length of the line. There is no question about the long line waiting outside Las Cuatro Milpas. Muy delicioso!

I love this authentic place. Worth the wait, made machaca with my left over shredded burrito the next day. My fave on the menu was the tamale in the beans and rice so delicious! Best tamale ever. I love the rolled tacos here as well. Lines long but goes quick, they close early so catch me when ya can.

Hands down one of the BEST Mexican food joints in San Diego!!! It’s fully worth the wait. It gets super busy during the week line = looooong at lunch time so either call in or go early! Haven’t been on the weekends but I can imagine they would be just as busy. My FAV rolled tacos with hot sauce on the side. I have also tried chicken & pork burrito with sour cream, regular crispy tacos, rice, beans, tamales, handmade tortillas & all = AWESOME!!! Honestly I haven’t tried anything that I didn’t like so far… The staff that work there are super nice & hook it up!

This place suck.!! I gave them 3 try’s and I was disappointed on all. I heard so many good thing, some people I know think it’s bomb. Anyway I should have known better. There moms cooking was no good too. I tried something different all 3 times. There’s absolutely no flavor in the food here. Take your own seasoning so you can flavor your food. The only reason I came back here after the first time is others were paying. Won’t be coming back ever not even if it was free again. I’ll be a real friend and warn you not to come here. Northgate market has really good food and at good prices. You won’t be disappointed. Do the challenge get take out at both and you decide. Good bye!

What a great find and recommendation via my Unilocal app. This was confirmed when we arrived at around 930am on a weekday and saw the long line. Although the line was long, it moved fairly quick. When you get inside you can see the production of them frying up the tortillas and tacos. They’re made daily and are fresh. You then proceed to place your order and pay with cash. No credit cards accepted. Ask for onions, lemon, and cilantro to top off your meal. This is free of charge. They offered me hot sauce, but I would only recommend it if you have a high tolerance for spicy food. They even warmed me that it is very spicy. I ordered the chorizo with beans and rice and the chicken burrito. The chorizo comes with tortillas… can’t remember how many, but I want to say 3. The rice and beans were my favorite and went well with the tortillas. The chicken burrito was ok and would have been better if the chicken wasn’t tuff. It was a little too much food for me and would recommend ordering just the chorizo with beans and rice. I enjoy dining in the hole in the walls and where the locals eat. Las Cuatro Milpas is as authentic as is gets.

In the hunt for breakfast while passing time waiting for our Barrio adventure we find Las Cuatro Milpas(Peter C found this place via the trusty Unilocal site) The constant line of patrons that keep streaming in is a definite testament to the price, quantity and quality of the food at Las Cuartro Milpas. I tried the rice and beans with chorizo and it did not disappoint. If you order the burrito be prepared to carry ½ of it home as the burritos are huge. Tacos are served in hard and soft shells. The tortillas are EXCELLENT and chewy eaten warm. Salsa including guacamole is authentic and home made. A definite must try if you are in the area

After a year of trying to come try the famous Milpas I finally did. I guess I got lucky with front parking and no line. Just a min after I got the the line was around and out the door. I couldn’t make up my mind on what to have so I tried a few things and shared with my friend and it was plenty. The homemade tortillas are an added touch to this true authentic Mexican restaurant. The rice and beans were a bit salty but still tasty I added the chorizo and yum! Pork and chicken tacos amazing. Be careful with the hot sauce it is FIRE!!! The tamale was a little dry so you have make sure you add condiments and salsa. Now the place is a hole in the wall so don’t be surprised to find dirty tables and dirty floors. If you can see past that then you found yourself a truly authentic Mexican place for breakfast or lunch.

Divey & Delicious The short and simple menu doesn’t disappoint. There will likely be a line way out the door(this is how you will find this place), but it moves relatively quickly, there is plenty of shared seating inside, and the all-female staff was cool to see. $ 20 buys you a dozen tamales and you can buy masa in bulk if you want to make your own.

I’ve heard so many raving reviews of this place, but had no idea the menu was so limited. It makes sense though, they have to keep the line moving! I went at an off times during the week and waited all but 5 minutes to place my order, score! Experience. Get in line. Place your order. they make it. By the time you’re at the register they come with your food. You can grab hot sauce on the counter as well. There’s only one type(so don’t expect the hot sauce bars like some other Mexican joints have). After you pay you can grab utensils and other stuff(to-go boxes, etc). Take your food to a table and chow down. Leave your tray, plates and other things on the table — they’ll take care of it after you leave. Eats. + Chicken taco — YESPLEASE! The shell is deep fried and they pack it with meat. Toppings include lettuce and cheese. + Rolled tacos(5 for $ 5). They come in pork only. Toppings are: tomato sauce, lettuce, sour cream and cheese. These are packed with a good amount of pork, but I can’t compare it to other joints since I don’t normally order rolled tacos. — Pork burrito. Super packed with meat. Also has lettuce and cheese. What I love most about this place is they make fresh tortillas! That’s what stood out the most in everything I tried. You can truly taste the difference. The best part is they sell them so you can buy fresh tortillas for the same price you’d pay at the market. Overall, I’d come back again if I was in the area and wanted Mexican. I’m glad I went when the wait was all but 5 minutes ~ but I don’t see how people wait 30+ mins in line for this. Also — they close at 3pm sharp! So if you’re planning to come just shy of 3, don’t plan to sit and eat because they’re already packing your meal for take out.

Cash only! If you are driving around Barrio Logan & see a massive line, you have found Las Cuatro Milpas. As authentic as it gets! The menu is basic but the food is not. When you enter you see the ladies cooking & preparing your meals, no surprise as to what you will get. When you pay, you get rewarded with a couple of the best flour tortillas I have ever tasted! Order more, I promise you it will be worth it! Plenty of seating, actually plenty of rooms with a ton of seating. Rolled Tacos(5) — Good! When you wait in line you can see the big frying pan where they make these greasy tacos. I do wish they had beef because they only have chicken which was very dry. Pork Taco — Good but the pork was dry too. Flour Tortillas — I would wait in their long line any day for these tortillas! So good they may be better than my favorites at Café Cayote!

I did lots of research before going to Las Cuatro Milpas. I was in San Diego for the weekend and looking for a hole-in-the wall place with great Mexican food. After reading Unilocal reviews describing this place as dirty, with a staff that speaks almost no English, and the smell of lard permeating the entire block, I concluded that I must eat here. The food is authentic and cheap. The menu is limited to crunchy tacos, rolled tacos, tamales and chorizo con huevo. I love that they keep the menu small and just do everything right. The rolled tacos are 5 for $ 5 and covered in crema, lettuce and crumbled cheese. They are BOMB – crisp edges with a slightly chewy center and juicy, tender shredded meat inside. The crunchy tacos are similar. The real showstopper is the chorizo con huevo with homemade tortillas. WOWWOWWOW. I don’t know that there is anything more comforting than this dish – the soft rice in the rich chorizo and bean chili-like sauce, topped with fresh onion and ciliantro, is a one-of-a-kind culinary wonder. It is worth waiting in line for. Definitely get a cup of their«salsa» which I’m sure is just the fat rendered from the chorizo. So much NOMS. I actually regret going to Las Cuatro Milpas because there is nothing that even compares in LA and the cravings of chorizo con huevo have been fierce, unyielding and impossible to alleviate. Las Cuatro Milpas was my meal between dinner at Providence and dinner at Nobu, and I can say, without shame, I enjoyed it just as much.

Are you kidding me right now? This place gets 4 ½ stars? B. S!!! It should have 5!!! Went here this morning with my girl. She read somewhere that the famous RuPaul(yeah, THAT RuPaul) said that if he had one thing to eat before he died he’d want the chorizo con huevos from here. I’d have to agree. The dish is AMAZING!!! Chorizo with eggs and beans mixed in some sort of broth over rice. Comes with tortillas. Authentic tortillas. The kind that I grew up on in New Mexico. Brown, red, hot, spicy and filling. We ordered two large bowls. We could have done with one and split it. Took leftovers home. Taste was beyond words. Beyond comprehension. Limited menu. They stick to what they know and they’re experts at it. Basic menu not basic food. Street parking only. Gotta get here early because lines form quickly. We got in at the right time. You walk in and SMELL the quality of the food. Cash only. Try this place and you’ll know how they’ve stayed in business. Barrio Logan is experiencing an urban resurgence if you will. However, Las Cuatro Milpas has stood the test of time. Come here. Bring an appetite. And remember… RuPaul’s favorite place.

The Barrio Logan area has been experiencing an urban renewal. There are many businesses emerging and giving new life to the area. A decades old staple remains, Las Cuatro Milpas. A humble establishment on Logan Avenue with lines that rival those of a Black Friday special. The ordering and serving of the food is fast and simple, with a limited menu aiding the process. The total counter space is about 15 feet from the door to the register. You order and 5 feet later you have your meal in tray. From what I was able to briefly scan they have burritos, rolled tacos(flautas), folded fried tacos(tacos dorados), rice/beans, rice/beans/chorizo, tamales and Saturday — menudo. You can also order tortillas to-go. I ordered three pork tacos dorados and a bowl of rice/beans/chorizo that comes with freshly made tortillas. There are 3 rooms to enjoy your food in, directly across the register, next to the tortilla makers or a building next door. Coming in I had expectations of the scents and flavors I would experience. First bite and those expectations were pleasantly put to rest. The flavors and texture were not what I had become accustomed to through my adult years. The food here is prepared, in my opinion, as close to home as you can get even with the food being produced in such large quantities. Everyones home is different, so we cannot logically expect this place to have all the different ingredients we might have been raised with. Personally, I was overcome with nostalgia and found myself reminiscing about trips to Mexico when I was young. Now, for the actual food. The tortillas were slightly fried, pork was tasty, lettuce was crisp and the cotija cheese was fresh. I dabbed some crema(sour cream) for the final touches. No salsa for me as I really wanted to savor the taco. The beans are served in their broth, a style known as from the pot(frijoles de olla). The rice and chorizo are added in to make a stew of some sort. The beans were soft and the chorizo was slightly spicey. The tacos were delicious, not an overpowering taste, but a modest flavor. The bowl of beans was comforting, especially on a chilly morning. I will definitely return so I can show my girls what their papa’ used to eat when times were simpler and nana was queen of the kitchen.

With all the amazing reviews and always passing by this place and seeing a Splash Mountain Long disneyland-type of line to get food here, I was extremely determined to come and try. When I came, I had to stand in the long awaited line as well, but the wait was actually not too bad at all. The line actually goes by fairly quick and the service is fast. The venue is large with a lot of seating too which probably contributes to the shorter wait time to get inside the restaurant, which is nice. During our trip, we ordered the rolled tacos, the burrito, the chorizo con huevo, and the tamale. Out of everything, I thought the rolled tacos were the best. They were crunchy and had a lot of tomatoes, lettuce, and sour cream with them. Everything else was only okay though. I’m not sure if it’s because I had such high expectations for the spot, but I was definitely expecting a lot more. There are very few things on the menu and I can say that the food tastes authentic. but overall, just nothing crazy special. Parking can be pretty tough too around this area. Still happy I finally got to tried this popular spot, but not sure if I’d come again.

Quite literally the best Mexican food I’ve ever had… Normally my go to taco spot in SD is tacos el gordo but this place kills it– so much so that I just don’t think I can ever be the same… It’s like an assembly line and visually unattractive if you want to sit and eat… But the food triumphs over everything else. It doesn’t matter that the ladies are cranking out the same items over and over… They’re sooooooo good that you wish you lived right around the corner. We drove 75 miles to get this food and while in line they said we had to get the food to go because they were closing… Still ok with that… I’m drooling

For any restaurant to have remained intact for more than over 80 years is quite an accomplishment. Add to the fact that they don’t do any advertising or have a website and that is incredible! I guess the key to their continued success has always been attributed to their simplicity and quality. The Estudillo family has been serving Mexican food here for three generations. Las Cuatro Milpas has been located on Logan Ave since 1933. The menu is self-explanatory: rice, beans, pork tacos(no beef), pork tamales, burritos, chorizo with eggs, and rolled tacos. On Saturdays, they serve Menudo, so that’s always worth it. When your food is ready, grab a seat and begin chowing down! The incredible long line shows how popular they are. Like most mom and pop Mexican restaurants, it is cash only, so leave the credit card in your wallet and be sure to hit the ATM before you come here. If you know anything about this place, it is a San Diego classic!

This place is totally worth the wait in the line. As they seem to be constantly busy, the service seems a little bit on the rushed side especially since the menu is a little difficult to decipher. Menu shows tamales, rolled tacos, burritos, and regular tacos. Most of the food is already prepared and made to order does not exist unless on a slow day. However as the customers are churned through, all the food is still very fresh! The rolled tacos were ok with relatively good flavor and very authentic(no yellow cheese to be seen in a ½ mile radius of this place :)) however the true gems are the homemade tamales and homemade flour tortillas! The tortillas can be munched on alone and still taste wonderful let alone using them in your personal cooking will certainly ramp up your Mexican cuisine preparation game. All in all, this place is great for a quick(if the line is short enough), inexpensive, bite to eat if you are in the area! Definitely recommend but there are better authentic Mexican food joints around.

This place brings all the boys to the yard, apparently. Outdated references aside, the line for this place is always long. Parking sux probably just because this place exists. Unilocal community, sometimes I think you overhype places. I think this place is overhyped! The line is long but moves sort of quickly(expect half an hour-ish), they are cash only, and FORTHELOVEOFGOD know what you want before you get inside. Don’t waste everyone’s time when you just stood in line for 400 years and should’ve done it then. I shared the pork burrito and 5 rolled tacos with my lovely boyfriend, and had I not expected the best thing I’ve ever eaten, it would’ve been pretty good. EXCEPT UnilocalERS, you claim that heaven comes down when you take a bite so my expectations were super high and so I was sort of just thinking… this is it? Yes, it’s good. Yes, I wouldn’t turn it down if offered to me. Would I stand in line again? Probably not. Would I crave this? Probably not. The ladies inside KNOW how to run a business, know how to cook, and know how to move a line, but let’s face it, it’s not earth shatteringly delicious, it’s just solidly good food. Overall, good. Not worth the hype though!

It’s just okay. Maybe we didn’t order the right stuff. Lunch lines are long and you shouldn’t expect much service or atmosphere when you order and eat(no points deducted for that; I get that it’s not a sit-down-and-order place). They make everything fresh, but unlike El Carrito down the street, it isn’t made to order. The chicken burrito that I had was all right. The order of rice and beans is very lard-y and a high ratio of beans to rice. Handmade tortillas are very good quality. Two days later, they still don’t break when you stuff them with taco filling and then eat. Rolled tacos came with cheese, guac, etc, but seemed to have more animal fat than animal meat. A mixed bag. Cash only and is cheap, but not a steal. My recommendation: Go down the street to El Carrito where there’s no line, the food is made to order, and it’s absolutely bursting with flavor and excellence.

The food here is delicious and authentic. There is always a line, but you will not be disappointed if you wait. This restaurant is priced extremely fair(cash only) and the service is fast. I wish I could find more places cooking food from scratch the way these people do. I highly recommend the chorizo bowl and the tamales(beef or carnitas). I can not get enough of their homemade tortillas. If you do not like this food please feel free to go back to Taco Bell I’m sure they would be happy to feed you! More for me! I hate to be that person as this restaurant has received top reviews. But… I will say very authentic and homemade tacos, burritos, tortillas and taquitos. The tortillas were fried and the dough mixture very good. However if you like the smell of lard, you are also in luck. Unfortunately for me I got very sick nearly 30 minutes later. Some tips: cash only! The line looks long, but moves fast, walk to the back and you will find more tables as well as the ladies making fresh tomales.

Had high hopes for this lil spot & was let down. They had a line going out the door & everything! Was told they had some really great crispy tacos among other things & left disappointed. Had the pork crispy tacos, chorizo con huevos, and a tamale. The taco shells were not crispy; they tasted like they were refried & kind of stale. I will say though that the pork was very juicy & had lots of flavor especially since it was shredded meat. The tamale was mushy & didn’t have much flavor. The chorizo situation was probably the best thing that I tried but not good enough for me to want to keep eating. It came with fresh homemade flour tortillas but they tasted doughy. I was told that they usually fry the tacos with the meat inside but we got there an hour before they closed and they were frying the shells first then putting the meat in… all I can say is consistency is key if you want repeat customers. Also the ladies helping at the front counter were very nice BUT one thing that was not appreciated was having the lights turned off on us before we finished our food especially since they were still taking orders at the counter(We still had 15 minutes before they closed)! All in all, will not be returning the next time I’m in Diego…

Okay Lovies! Based on the reviews I was super excited to get in here! I ordered pork tacos, tamale, rice n beans, and rolled tacos. Pork taco– meat was okay, tho it was more shredded beef tasting than pork. My shell was chewy not crispy as if they refried a old shell and towards the end I gave up cuz I couldnt chew it. I also had to add everything they had on the condiment area plus order some sour cream and tomatoe sauce before I gave up on finding a flavor that just wasn’t there. The cojita cheese didn’t help. Rolled tacos were just okay too. No guacamole, no pico, just cream same cojita as the tacos & some tomatoe sauce. Tamale– very mushy, tasted awful! No thank you! Rice n Beans– tasted like canned beans to me and there was no traces of chorizo. Rice was overcooked. Flour Tortillas– tho they seemed home made they were kept in a steamer thingy so they were chewy, microwavy like, and getting tough by the second. Décor was a hot mess, place puts new word on term HOLEINTHEWALL. With the lines wrapped around the corner I read about, they need to invest in cleaning up their business. Overall, this place seemed highly OVERRATED. They had no fresh cheese, no fresh salsas, everything seemed canned. We got there at 215 and at 240 with everyone still eatting, they turn the lights off =-O!!. Smh, thats NEVER happened to me. I get you close at 3 but dam! Lastly would I come back– HECKNO!

I was aboard the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner traveling from Los Angeles when I learned of Las Cuatro Milpas. A local youtuber professed it to be his favorite burrito joint in SD. With every passing town along the golden coast I became more and more adament on going there that afternoon. I realised however, that the restaurant was closing at 3pm so time was of the essence. We arrived at San Diego Central at 2:28pm. It took some time to deboard as I was cued behind a large Mennonite family. They were traveling with alot of luggage and needed some extra time to gather their belongings. I used the delay to request an Über. I soon descended the carriage stairs, ran across the platform, through the station, out into the street. I met my driver Amer. The journey took 8 minutes. I arrived at Las cuatro milpas at 2:40pm. I ordered two flautas and a burrito. The cashier asked if it was for here or to go. I said for here. She said I would have to hurry up and eat as they were closing at 3pm. I said no te preocupes. The flautas are very good. The burrito is dry. My advice is to use the surplus salsa leftover from the flautas for the burrito. By 3pm the door was closed. Hasta luego gringo.

Ahh the coveted Cuatro Milpas. Came here with a group of about 10(including kiddos). First off, for those that don’t already expect it, Cuatro Milpas usually has a line which shouldn’t take more than half hour, if it is, if say you picked the wrong time. If you work in the area you can do one small thing(don’t tell anyone I told you); you can call in your order and just let them know you work in the area. Go there. Straight to the counter. And that’s it. Pay and leave. So back to it. What we ordered: rolled tacos(lots of them), regular tacos(they’re like rolled tacos but folded in half and YEs also fried), and plenty of rice and beans to go around. Rolled tacos… They were ALRIGHT. I have a small rant about this. They’re topped off with crema(Mexican sour cream), Mexican salsa, & grated cheese. I was confused. I don’t know if they wanted to make it like momma makes at home or taco shop like or combination of both. The flavors are off. If they’re going for moms cooking, where’s the guac? Why this kind of cheese? It’s what we put on elote preparado not tacos, so confused. The Mexican salsa didn’t do much for the tacos. I ate 2⁄5. Rice and beans: rice was a bit mushy; beans were good. They are served in one bowl so they will eventually become one mush of bean and rice pudding; which actually isn’t horrible. If you like rice and beans You should try these just to say you tried them. I understand why someone that doesn’t have home made tacos would like this place: it’s home cooking. Right in the moment, in your face cooking, with pretty straight forward menu with cheap prices.

This place is a San Diego staple. When I was in law school we used to go here all the time. They have really limited hours, are generally only open for lunch, but it is because their food is in such high demand. There is always a pretty long line down Logan ace to get in. Many say this is the best Mexican food in San Diego, I wouldn’t say that but it would say they have the best tacos I’ve ever had. They are pretty darn tasty. Mom tasty tacos. I will go here again and suggest this place to others.

If you ever pull up and leave because you see a line formed outside the door… you’ll never ever get to eat here. There is always a line but it moves rather quickly. Menu is small and the ladies up front work in an assembly line. The pork was very flavorful. The tacos had a nice crisp to it. I got the chorizo con huevo based on all other reviews but I liked the tortilla more than the actual entrée. Seems a little overrated to me.

Over 1,000 reviews? So now that the secret’s(and for quite some time now apparently)…I am sad. Sadness quickly melts away though when I relived the taste of their homemade tortillas, shaped from perfect little dough balls of deliciousness right in Las Cuatros’ back kitchen, dipped in a medium bowl(definitely enough to share) of chorizo con huevos. Rolled tacos really meaty, tamales were a bit salty– but as a friend puts in– nothing a lil lime juice can’t fix… and once you smother(if you dare) their hot sauce on these bad boys — they’ll be good to go. Definitely like eating in abuela’s kitchen(except maybe for the constant line of ppl shuffling through). Get there before 11 to beat the crowd.

Solo he comido las flautas allí y me gustaron mucho … Lo malo son las filas y el parking.

Chorizo con huevo. That is all you need to know. Best chorizo I’ve had in San Diego.
