Shhhhhhhhhhhh! I am about to tell you a secret. Please don’t tell anyone else. This is just between you and me. I mean it, ok? Letty’s Tamales makes some damn good food! We stopped here on a whim a few afternoons ago. We were driving by and my audacious wife turned to me and said«Hey, let’s try it!». We were on our way to some ubiquitous kid function and we had some time to kill between point A and B and were in need of a snack. «All right,» I sez as I pull a quick u-turn and return to the street in front of the unassuming storefront. Tamales? Okay, I can handle that. We walk in and there are some old dudes sitting there with their legs stretched out before them, staring so hard it was almost like that weird moment in a Western when the new kid in town walks into a saloon and every heavy turns and glares until the bartender breaks the silence with the slap of the whisky bottle on the counter. Later Sylvia tells me that they’re regulars. Anyhoo, we order a bean and cheese burrito, sopes, and a taco cos this is just a snack, not a meal. After taking care of the regulars, Sylvia brings our plates to the table and we get our grub on. The kids split the burrito and proceed to get beans everywhere, but they finish every last bite. My taco is A+++ and for 99¢ can I just say WOW! My wife churlishly shares the last of her three sopes with me and time stops. Does anyone remember that awesome restaurant Palenque that used to be in PB? Those sopes resemble in both taste and texture the garnachas they used to serve at Palenque. Muy excellente! I will be back for more. This is real food, made by real people for real people. Next time I’m at the Costco a mere 1 mile away, I will not be swayed by the easy pickings of their corporate slop. Instead I will jump in my chariot and visit Letty’s for some more human goodness.
