I did makeup for a two week performance years ago with Lyric. A great company to work with but also the performances are amazing. Lots of great talent! I can’t wait to go see a show again.

When my hubby first suggested going to the Opera I thought he had lost his mind. I pictured being squeezed-in between stuffy people bathed in heavy aftershave and clouds of Joy perfume rising up to the rafters meanwhile battleaxes gyrated, crooning in a language I couldn’t understand. Then he clarified — we’re going to the LYRICOPERA which performs musical comedies in ENGLISH and it’s at the gorgeous Birch North Park Theater. After we saw our first show at the Lyric Opera we were hooked! This isn’t your Grandparents opera that’s for sure. Funny double entendres, current pop culture references, great costumes, creative sets, a live orchestra and the best vocalists around make it dynamite. This is no snooze-fest! Leon Natker and J. Sherwood Montgomery have made the San Diego Lyric Opera first-rate! And I love J. Sherwood Montgomery’s etiquette reminder at the beginning of the show. If you’ve been then you know! I’ve seen the Fiddler on the Roof, Pirates of Penzance, Hansel and Gretel, Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof, Candide, Rumpelstiltskin(ok this one was especially crazy!), Trial by Jury, HMS Pinafore(one of my favorites), Man of La Mancha, Iolanthe, The King and I and a bunch of others. I’ve also brought my Mom and family out during Christmastime for the big White Christmas Sing-Along. For those of you who have a tight budget, there’s often half-price tickets available on Arts Tix. If you’re out to impress that special someone, or just want to laugh the blues away, definitely see a show at the Lyric Opera! You’re heart will be singing all the way home afterward!

Psst… young people. Musical theater isn’t just for gays and the elderly. I’m a much better judge of beer and tacos than of opera singers, but I’ve generally been thrilled with all the performances I’ve seen here. As far as I can tell, the Lyric Opera consistently lives up to its task, for a city the size of San Diego, and for a building as charming as the North Park Theater. Their lead performers are generally hand-picked professionals from out of town, but the cast is made up of some of your more talented neighbors, right down to the orchestra pit.(The North Park Theater was built for vaudeville & silent movies in the 1920s.) Great sets, good productions, good talent. Ticket prices are as low as $ 30. I’ve blown as much at Scolari’s in an evening. And without the hangover.
