Modern Times Beer

Thought I would share my interaction from yesterday:
Me: Hey, what is the difference between all your IPAs?
Beertender: It is the different types of hops used to brew them.
Me: Can you explain a little more?
Beertender: Does the hops really make that big of difference to you?
I was just looking for a little insight because I do like their beers but that was just rude.
The guy at the door was also quite rude to us when he checked our IDs, not the kind of experience I care to have when walking into an establishment. I was very embarrassed to bring my friend there and we talked about it all night. I have been there several times but I don’t think I will be back.

I’m not a fan of one star reviews but my experience leaves me compelled to do this. I looked at Unilocal hours and indicated clearly open. Called the number. Recording said open. Looked at the website and hours listed included being open now. Arrived to a dead tap room that looked closed. Walked up up the door to peak in and a little paper taped to the wall said closed.
I think you owe in to your customers to communicate a little better. I didn’t check your IG, Twitter or Facebook. I suspect it would have indicated nothing. In the time I wrote this three more parties came up and read your little note. No way to run a business.

My boyfriend loves craft beer so we stopped by on our recent trip to San Diego. I actually don’t drink beer. I just generally do not like it and would rather have wine or tequila. Anyway, I wasn’t really expecting much. However, I tried Sleepless City — it was SO GOOD! It tasted like coffee and vanilla — not super overwhelming but enough to make it pleasant. I tried another stout — can’t remember which one but that was decent too. Anyway, they do not sell Sleepless City in a bottle and couldn’t fill a can so I hope they still have it next time I go :)

Great beer and a few great tasting stouts (my fav). Fun, welcoming environment with friendly staff. I was surprised at their affordable product prices. An empty 64oz growler was 6 bucks! They even have a special machine for growlers to ensure a perfect fill. Definitely on my list of to do’s whenever I am in San Diego again!

One of my favorite breweries!!! I love modern times. The beer is delicious and are of great quality. My favorite beer is the black house coffee stout, but all their beers are great. The atmosphere in this brewery is so cool and laid back. I love the décor with all the books, comic books, murals, etc. They sell shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and growlers here too. I can’t wait to visit again soon and maybe go see the tasting room as well. Cheers!

Don’t let the somewhat seedy neighborhood keep you away — a trip to Modern Times is worth the hassle! Yes, parking can be a challenge. Yes, you’ll find yourself right next to a strip club and adult book store in what feels like a run-​down industrial area, but once you get inside, relax, stay awhile and enjoy the brews. The theme here is books, and they have some neat shelves and wall papered with pages. One wall is a comic book wall, while another is a super-​cool mosaic made up entirely of post-​it notes. (That’s a monkey, right?).
On a recent trip to San Diego, my friends and I decided to give Modern Times a shot. It looked like they were in the middle of an expansion/​renovation, as they had some barriers up, but the bar was still accessible.
They have a nice variety of craft brews here — I went with an IPA (Nova Swing) and a nice dark imperial stout. Cool and refreshing. They also have a really nice and light saison. The place can get pretty busy so seating can be a challenge. They don’t have food, but a nice food set-​up outside served up awesome grilled cheese sandwiches.
All in all, don’t let the surroundings scare you off — get in there and enjoy!

Modern Time is in my top 5 microbreweries in San Diego.
Really nice décor — very warm and comfortable. The post-​it art on the wall is awesome, and the bar made of stacked books is very creative.
The beer is great — from the dank IPAs to the coffee stouts, they’re all delicious. The IPAs are some of the best in San Diego, and even their wheat beers (which I don’t typically like) are damn near perfect. The service here is also pretty good. They’re generally pretty fast and most of the crew are friendly. My only complaint is the parking situation. You’re pretty much limited to street parking, which in itself is very limited near the brewery. Despite that, this place is definitely worth a visit.

My rating is purely on their coffee that is sold on their website. I ordered a bag and then a subscription order for my husband for Christmas. Mind you I ordered Dec. 1^st, you would think I had plenty of time to receive the order. On Dec. 15^th, I received an email that they were out of the product that I ordered because when you order something with the subscription, it gets handled another way? Doesn’t seem right to me, seems like they have a logistics issue. Fast forward to Dec. 23^rd, I still don’t have my order. I called early in the morning, the girl said that she would get a bag in the mail ASAP and they usually have 2 day shipping. Since I had an issue, she said she would make sure it got to me on time. A few hours later, I get an email that it had been shipped and but she sent it 3 days. I checked the tracking and I am not supposed to have it until Dec. 28^th. WTH?!? Not a good way to start a relationship when a company is looking for me to stay on paying $ 39 a month for some coffee.
This better be some super good coffee.

Modern Times is my favorite microbrewery in San Diego hands down. Ambiance? Check. Beer greatness? Check.
Their restrooms could use a bit more sprucing up in terms of making it smell nicer (and not like a closet for costumes) and more updated, but at least their tasting room is beautiful. The creativity and quirkiness of Modern Times is shown through the decorated walls with post-​its and the many random picture frames on the wall with church-​like pews. There isn’t a lot of space to sit, so if you come here with a big party… you better get lucky with getting the communal tables or just hunker down at a wooden barrel and steal some bar stools.
I would totally come back again for that delicious oatmeal stout. Because of their open space and industrial setting, there is room whether you’re here with one person or a large group. Too bad it’s in the middle of nowhere in Midway, but what my friend and I did was do a small beer crawl in Midway. There are other breweries you can check out from Acoustic Ales to Bay City Brewing… all within 5 minutes driving distance from each other! Just remember to have a DD.

Stopped by at this location after a visit to Bay City Brewing a few blocks over. Cool, hip as fuuu décor and furniture and whatnot. Modern Times is straight outta every Pinterest-​users’ dreams. It’s very chic and, do I dare say… modern?! Those velvet paintings hanging on the wall? A+. The huge ass wall covered by comic book pages? Also great. But, what a waste of good comics! :P
Big, clean location. Great beer, good times.

I really enjoy this place. I’ve been a handful of times, and other than the slow service (due to the large crowds, really) there’s nothing but great things to say.
Atmosphere: The selling point of this spot. From the mosaic wall made of of post-​it notes to the book bar, it is like being at an art show.
Service: Like I said, the service is a bit slow. No frills, no one making you feel overly welcome, but nothing to detract from the experience.
BEER: Delicious. They do a solid job of providing fantastic spins on traditional styles. Fortunate Islands, a tropical wheat beer, is understated and flavorful. I’m not a huge fan of wheat beers but this is right on point. Not super fruity at all, just tasty.
Price: Pretty standard for a SD brewery. Not too pricey and tasting options available to experience all the great beers they have on tap.

Long on my list of breweries I wanted to visit this visit was not let down.
Funky and cool, it is just off the beaten track enough to make you feel like you’ve found it.
Along with their epic selection of regular brews, a nice selection of new and random beers are on offer here too.
The staff were really well informed about all the poured, and the even brew and serve (cold) their own coffee.
A bit trendy inside, with minimal seating and a weird library vibe to it, this is a fun spot to chill out. Flights are on offer of course as are taster pours all for a good price. They do sell some snacks too for $ 3 – 5.
Really the standout here is their fantastic beer, the inside is weird like their labeling, but the staff were smart and on point. It was not too loud and they were all stoked up on all the beers I wanted to drinks.

It’s Modern «nostalgia» in this eclectic nouveau-​old school feel of a wide open tasting room with unique wall art.
The beers are what keeping me coming back here though as they have a solid and diverse line-​up from the pale to the dark, the Saisons to the Stouts.
A little big tough to park (side streets) but well worth the visit.

Went there with a group of people and the service was fast I had a guy bartender that I thought was funny.
The girl behind the counter LITETALLY passed me up when I was waiting.
She asks my friend for his order then skipped me to ask the guy behind me… even the guy behind me was confused.
Regardless I enjoyed the atmosphere and tasty products!
Parking is easy to find and this location is conveniently off the free way.
Definitely worth the visit.

Love their beer, love the brewery, the murals are off the hook creative, the beer tenders are knowledgeable and friendly.
Favorite beers they make at the moment are Blazing World, Fruitlands, Mega Black House and the Oneida.
the schwag is also top notch, although I do wish they carried more stuff for my kid :)

Modern times has been good to me. I’ve gotten lucky enough to buy a few limited release bottles from them and they have a quick and easy pick up for their brown paper bag beer sales. I just have to present my ID and they give me beer! I love beer!
We recently have been filling growlers with cold brew coffee to enjoy at work… there is nothing like cracking open a growler first thing in the morning! We take turns and Modern Times has made the list of fill spots. The coffee is just as good as the beer!
The regular beers on tap are tasty, I recently tasted the grapefruit IPA and it was good. I’m not a big IPA girl either! I also had the beer aged in wine barrels, it was crisp and refreshing, a good summer beer.
The special releases I’ve had were amazing! I had Monster’s Park bourbon barrel aged beer and recently picked up Monster’s Park with vanilla beans as well as Monster’s Park coconut aged in carribean rum barrels. I am glad I was lucky enough to get in on the good beer. Thanks Modern Times for keeping me buzzed and wired all in the same day at times ;-)

I have never heard of Modern Times Brewing until a friend mentioned it, but now that I know of them, I see them every where! The location is kinda sketchy and the nearby business are quite interesting. There’s a nude drive-​in on the street corner, but Modern Times is in a warehouse on the street behind. Lol.
The space is amazing though. The bar is lined with hard cover books, the divider between tasting room and brewery was based on books and the wallpaper on the walls had books. It felt like I was in a library. It was pretty rad.
We swooped a seat at the end of the bar. The two of us got a beer flight, while one friend got their famed Black House, a coffee stout. For my flight, I sort let the beertender suggest things to try. I ended getting both Universal Friend (Pinot Grigio and Pinot noir), Black House and a Berliner Weisse. I thought they were all tasty except for the Pinot Grigio. It was too much of a saison flavor that I didn’t like, so I left that one untouched. The beertender noticed and replaced it with one that I like free of charge. I was really stoked to see that.
Overall, I’d love to come back. The environment/​ambiance is super chill and thinking back, I should have grabbed a growler while I was there. Oh well, I can always come back and I will… soon-​ish!

Definitely had the most hipster vibe of the breweries we toured.
The space here is open and airy, making it a great place to hang on a breezy sunny day. The wrap-​around bar is made of old books with a marble top, and is flanked by art on two walls; one covered in comic book pages and the other featuring the infamous Michael & Bubbles Post-​it art. Lots of places to sit besides the bar as well.
It wasn’t too crowded when we arrived, so the atmosphere was mellow and casual. Bartenders were helpful and friendly. I tried the standard flight which consisted of the Lomaland, Blazing World, Fortunate Islands, and Black House. What I really like about this brewery is that I found both their stouts as well as their hoppier stuff to be appealing — most places usually specialize in a particular style, but there is quality across a great variety of styles here.
They also had some of their most recent limited releases on tap. Get the Monsters Park Aged in Nicaraguan Barrels w/​coconut. (You’re welcome.) Barrel-​aged stuff usually isn’t my thing, but this is one of the best stouts that I’ve ever had. The coconut finish lasts forever. Also on tap is their in-​house cold brewed iced coffee, which was great as a mid-​day pick me up.
NB They have some sort of anti-​party bus policy here, so if you’re visiting with a big group, make sure to clear things with the manager before arriving. We had a slight issue at the door, but we had confirmed our visit ahead of time so everything was cleared up within a minute or so and we had no subsequent issues.

I love the creativity of this brewery. One wall is lined with comic books. The opposite wall is an image (a man holding a monkey?) made out of sticky notes. My boyfriend & I ordered a flight of 4 beers for $ 10. The flight is automatically set to the following 4
Lomaland = Saison — delicious & refreshing! I highly recommend this one!
Fortunate Islands = Hoppy Wheat
Black House = Stout
Blazing World = Hoppy Amber
They have their famous coffee on tap & you can order a cold pack of beer on your way out. Also, they have snacks available for purchase.

GREAT atmosphere. Just a bit too expensive. Which is dumb honestly, because I willingly pay $ 6 for a peanut butter beer at Belching Beaver, but for some reason $ 7 is the limit. Also lower stars because it’s in kind of a strange area. It’s sort of an industrial building area with scattered street parking, and the lit up «Modern Times» sign is the only indication that anyone owns the building.
All that being said, their stouts are fantastic. Black House (I think that’s the name) is seriously good and is one of the only beers that I have drank out of a can that tasted good, and (not surprisingly) is even better from the tap.
Also, I respect the way they decorated the brewery. It looks secondhand but tastefully done, in such a way that I hope they actually did get all of their design ethic from rooting through thrift stores. I would be desperately disappointed if they paid a designer thousands of dollars to create «goodwill chic» with old pages of books, abandoned church pews, and pallets. It sounds like I’m knocking it, but honestly I love how unique it is! I just have this vision of a few guys sitting in an apartment going «hey man, we should start a brewery», then they throw together this super rad place by rummaging through secondhand crap and make something amazing out of it. And the post-​it monkey?! What?! Probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen and I need one in my place.
Summary: cool enough atmosphere to check out with a bunch of friends. Try their stouts.
