Mystic Mocha

This is one of my favorite breakfast places when I lived in University Heights. I hadn’t been back in a couple years since I moved to North County. My go to favorite is always the chilequiles. I agree with a couple of the other reviews; the prices have definitely gone up and the food portions are smaller. It was $ 12 for my veggie chilequiles. The service was great. She explained how they changed the entrée. They now make their own tortilla chips and used fresher and ingredients. I imagine that’s why the prices have gone up. The food was great; it was just the right temperature, and the flavor was amazing. I was a little hesitant to put the vegetables on an egg dish but it was superb!

Cool little shop. Great spot for breakfast and a late.

Ehh. This place is okay. I’ve been twice but don’t think I’ll go back.
The food was good I guess, nothing special. We’ve had everything off the menu that’s vegan. It’s a little pricey for the portion but, if it were just for the food, we might stop in once in a while. however, the staff was rude I felt. Both times, the same woman was working the register and both times, before we made it all the way in the door «can you close my door?!» Uhm okay, or when we finally fit in this tiny place all the way, you can close YOUR own door, since you want to be rude about it. It sounds silly but this was said to us both times and I heard her say it to another customer. The second time we went, they came out and took the table we were eating on. Crappy attitudes, mediocre food, probably not worth another trip.

Mystic Mocha! I am all for changes and making things better! Exciting to see they changed menu items, the look and drinks. Staff is super nice. I am decreasing my rating due to the price increase, the changes don’t justify a price hike :(
I’ll still stop by here from time to time but no longer as regular.

I love living a block away from this place. It’s super convenient and they have some delicious food and coffee.

The drinks and food have been very comforting both times I’ve visited. I had chilaquiles and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not an «authentic» taste in the sense that it’s not tortilla chips cooked in sauce, but they captured the essence of chilaquiles. I feel pretty weird saying that but there IS an essence to it! Lol It just all tasted so fresh and everything just balanced out so well.
The people who work here are very nice and patient, so I am glad I chose this place for breakfast on a Sunday morning over the other bustling brunch spots.

I was excited about this place when viewing the menu, but it just wasn’t that appealing.
I had some loose leaf tea which was good. I also tried the gluten free pistachio cake that they’re known for according to Unilocal and it was just OK.
Ambiance is also not that great. I think the savory breakfast and lunch items might be better, though! They looked pretty good.

Your customer service is dropping this review down to one star. Awesome response, real business like!
And my math is not incorrect, I have my receipt which I’ll gladly send to you.

I would give the previous business by the same name 500 out of 5 stars because the food was beyond great. I came there for the food. The new business (2 months now) has a far streamlined menu compared to before.
OWNER: please restore the menu or least some of it. The streamlined version is not enough.
Here’s an example. Before the quesadilla was $ 8 and had cheese, eggs, salsa, mushrooms, and spinach. The new version is $ 5 and is only cheese. Yes, for real. Only cheese.
You guys need to make food worth going back for or people won’t come back.
The staff on duty told me one of the reasons they had to streamline the menu down so much is because procuring all the ingredients was too much work. Just hire someone to drive around for minimum wage and buy the ingredients. People come to small restaurants for the food. The food itself should be the priority.
Personally I love small businesses and restaurants. One of my favorite breakfast places is the Hill Street Café in Oceanside because it has an amazing menu (including vegan) and although the ambiance is nice, I’m really there for the great dishes.
Best of luck to you all. Please (at least partially) un-​streamline the menu.

Found this place on Unilocal and as soon as I saw «organic» I was sold! The food was excellent though they didn’t have many options for pastries.
The space is small and there are a few tables inside and more outside where we chose to sit.
And the mochas, oh wow the mochas. There are over 20 flavors and the two I tried were fantastic. But I must warn you, they are more of a dessert/​milkshake type flavor than a breakfast drink.
I’d definitely return!

Mystic Mocha is a great neighborhood café. It’s small, eclectic and comfortable.
I was in the neighborhood, hungry and in need of a caffeine fix so I stopped. The menu had many tempting options but I settled on a Caramel Apple Muffin to accompany my coffee. The next challenge was wading through the many exotic mocha concoctions on offer. In the end, I had seen the peanut butter cup mocha mentioned often on Unilocal and gave it a go. I was leery of peanut butter in my coffee and first sip was a little worrisome. It won me over by the bottom of the glass and I dare say I may be experiencing a craving as I write this. Be warned though if you go the peanut butter cup mocha route, I was tasting peanut butter mocha all day… As well, The muffin was outstanding. The apple was subtle and the caramel topping perfectly paired.
Yum.

Two months ago I would have given this place five stars. I have been coming to Mystic Mocha almost once a week for years. Unfortunately, under new ownership Mystic Mocha has taken a drastic turn for the worse.
Prices have gone up considerably while portion sizes have gone way down. The chilaquiles, previously a favorite which would leave me stuffed, is now approximately ¹⁄₃ the size. Used to be around eight or nine dollars, which was reasonable. Now it’s $ 11 for way less food. Add in a price increase for all the drinks, and I just spent $ 20 on breakfast and a mocha for one. That’s ridiculous.
I’ll miss the old Mystic Mocha, but I won’t be returning here.

Place is really tiny but cute; eating inside is cramped. I think based on how the building is set up, you’re encouraged to sit outside. Which is great for most people who live in Southern California, but I like to eat inside, especially since I get cold easily (even in 65 degree weather). The food is okay; honestly, I had higher expectations coming in here based on the reviews so I was a little disappointed. My boyfriend seemed to think it was good, albeit overpriced. Drinks aren’t too bad, though!
By the way, coming here can be kinda tricky. We were able to find side parking in front of the café but I can’t imagine coming here later in the day.

Delicious! This is a cool, trendy coffee/​breakfast place tucked in University Heights. It has a really cute seating area outside, where lots of people come to sip their coffee and visit with friends and their dogs. I came here with some coworkers after a long stretch of night shifts, and it really hit the spot. The white almond joy mocha and peanut butter mocha were unique, sweet, and delicious. The chilaquiles were so good, and the breakfast sandwich was satisfying and didn’t have the sometimes greasy feeling of breakfast sandwiches elsewhere. I loved that they serve the meals with a side of fruit. The watermelon was a summer treat. I’ll definitely be back!

I got to say I’m pretty disappointed with the changes that have occurred at Mystic Mocha. The menu is cut and favorite dishes have disappeared :(. Prices have gone up and the funky cool décor and colors have changed as well. I really enjoyed the feel and the food this place once offered. I do appreciate the organic options, but that’s pretty much it.
I understand that under different management the direction for this spot has taken a turn-​but not all change can be a good thing. I couldn’t bare giving mystic less than 3 stars– I just hope it improves over time and they bring back popular menu items.
Till then, mystic mocha, my visits will be much less frequent..

I have been here plenty of times in the past. We have always liked the food and portions. The drinks were also pretty good.
Apparently management has changed and the food is different .
We were disappointed in the chilaquiles which used to be our go to. The drinks weren’t as good and the portions are smaller.
I like the expanded outdoor area. There are still a lot of mosquitoes. They are still dog friendly outside and have cute quirky décor.
Hopefully the new management and chef can find a new groove otherwise I have a feeling this place is going to lose its loyal customers.

Mystic mocha has taken a turn for the worst.

Higher prices.
Now, instead of the angry lady in the kitchen, it’s an even angrier and meaner old man who feels right at home yelling at the customers on how they should form a line.
The chicken chilaquiles were $ 8.75 and now it’s $ 11. And I wouldn’t mind paying more if it were the same plate as before: overflowing with delicious morsels of chicken and stacked with tortilla chips with egg. Today there was hardly any meat up in my gig. I think I found three measly little bits. And the total portion size has been reduced by 30%.
Oatmeal for $ 7?!
Really?! I don’t know how that price came to be… It’s a $ 5 dish at most.
I’m disappointed, Discouraged, and Disenchanted with the changes. However, the new paint job is a nice touch.

Looking for a different place to have breakfast and a little bit of alone time, I came across this place. A little off of the beaten path, a number of reviews, and quick parking, made this place a win for me.
I saw another Unilocaler posted about the Pesto Artichoke Scramble, so I had to give it a whirl, especially since I typically like meat in my morning meal. As it would take a little while for the food (I have a knack for showing up right before a rush comes), I ordered up a blended Vietnamese coffee to sip on whilst waiting.
It did not disappoint.
The scramble was a delightfully different flavor, with the shredded parm sprinkled on top. As you know, the Struggling Paleo avoided the potatoes and biscuit, but not without sampling if the biscuit was buttery or not. And it was buttery goodness from the small piece I had.
If you like sweetened coffee, the blended Vietnamese is a MUST. Try it before you add hazelnut to it (that is an option) and be sure to make it last!

I wanted to find a nearby brunch spot and came across this quirky place thanks to Unilocal (as always). When you arrive, you’ll notice a bunch of outdoor seating available in the front yard. It looks like your neighbor was throwing some kind of BBQ and just pulled out a bunch of different types of seats and tables and just placed it around randomly. I think it adds character though. Kinda gives it a homey feel. Once you enter the building, you’ll notice that it’s super small. When it’s busy, it gets super congested with people so it’s harder to move around which was quite inconvenient. I went on a late Sunday morning so the crowd should’ve been anticipated.
Anyways, I ordered their Caliente chorizo burrito and my hubby got their regular chorizo burrito. It was good but I’m definitely gonna try other things on the menu next time. Their coffee was on point though!!! The white almond joy was amazing. Butter crunch was good and the Mexican coffee was less than good which is surprising because apparently that’s one of their best sellers.
Overall, highly recommended breakfast /​brunch spot.

With an initial intention of going elsewhere, my sis and I were untroubled by the pouring rain + the slew of people waiting outside our original destination for these events led us to the Mystic Mocha.
The shop was fairly easy to find, located off a slanted corner btw Mission Ave and Alabama St, and street parking was feasible. Due to the pouring rain, we decided to sit indoors (which has 6 small starbucks-​like round tables and fascinating décor). Right as you walk in, you’re greeted by a waft of all things good about breakfast! it’s also worth mentioning that the place has outdoors seatings and is doggy-​friendly!
My sister ordered the Turkey Sausage Omelette (picture below) with hot tea, and I got the Jalapeño Chilaquiles with a Milky Way Mocha. Can’t say much about the omelette since my sister wouldn’t share, but my meal was InSaneLy Good! I’ve had my share of chilaquiles in San Diego, and this was probably the best i’ve had so far! (esp given the price range!!) It was crispy but not too crispy, spicy and Oh So Spicy! Yum Yum Yummm (:
All in All, I am glad we took a detour today and ended up at this little gem.
Will definitely be returning for more!
