Newport Avenue Optometry

I have been a patient at Newport Optical for ten years. Dr Ben Moshe is always courteous, kind and knowledgeable. I trust him completely. The office runs very smoothly. The optometrists are so helpful in assisting me in choosing the best glasses and sunglasses for me. The office is lovely, and so is the front office and back office staff. They are patient and kind. This office is so professional and efficient, I even recommend it to guests from out of town! You won’t regret making this your home eye doctors office; I would not consider using another office!

Great experience today with Dr. Eli Ben-​Moshe and his courteous and helpful staff. I was able to make an appointment quickly and efficiently online, with a follow-​up email confirmation. I was seen promptly when I arrived at the office. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I could have my lenses made on the spot; they were ready within ½ hour after my eye checkup! Good selection; reasonable prices.

6 stars out of 5! Dr. Ben-​Moshe and his staff are wonderful; very professional, courteous and friendly. I have been a client for many years and most recently purchased a pair of glasses. I was a little hesitant about how the glasses looked on me, and once I received them and wore them for a few days, I really knew that I was not comfortable with how they looked. I went back to Dr. Ben-​Moshe, unsure as to how to proceed, and was immediately assured that there was no issue or problem, they wanted me to be happy with how I looked. Together we found a frame that I liked and my new order was placed. Being allowed to return the previous frames, with no hassle, questions or bad feelings was unbelievable. I highly recommend Dr. Ben-Moshe’s practice.

Went here because of the great Unilocal reviews and it did not disappoint. They were busy but super friendly and efficient. Parking was really easy. Rosa was especially helpful and made everything really easy. My glasses were ready in 25 minutes.

Delayed, but better late then never. My experience here was sort of a mixed bag and some of it was of no fault of the establishment or staff… it was just sort of bad luck. I was going to write another review, but then my glasses started making my vision very blurred, so thought I would wait until I addressed the issue. Also, my frames broke out of nowhere. Kind of hard to describe the way they broke, but it was pretty clear it was a manufacturing issue.
Anyway, I guess AR coatings are pretty heat sensitive. I had never been told this, nor had I ever experienced it, having left my glasses in the car plenty of times during the summer seasons over the years. Anyway, they said that my glasses had «crazing,» and it’s due to my exposing them to extreme temperatures. Interesting… As I mentioned, I’ve had glasses all my life, all of them since 2001 with AR coating, and never experienced crazing. Also, I had had these glasses a very short time (maybe a month?) and didn’t recall ever leaving them in a hot vehicle, and definitely not in direct sunlight. This isn’t to say I didn’t contribute to the issue somehow, but to say that it was because of me and not mentioning actions taken in the lab that can increase the odds of this happening (
) seemed a bit disingenuous. However, I must say that regardless of all this, they replaced my frames and lenses, no questions asked.
So, why does this place have the most stellar rating on Unilocal (probably) of any optometrist in San Diego? It’s the owner, Dr. Ben Moshe. First, they have a store policy where their staff is ON the Unilocal reviews. I like this… but it felt a bit odd when I returned and they were specifically referring to my review. They seemed a bit put off by it, which is fine if they thought I was being unfair. They said that my lenses weren’t «aspheric» (as I mentioned in my previous review) and that the doctor had taken all the proper measurements to ensure everything was in line. Fair enough. Dr. Moshe addressed everything else, even the parking, which was only a side note that I thought others might find more important than myself. He explained how the invoices were vague because of such and such reason (relating to vendors, or an old system, I believe) and that he was either going to change over, or have his associates manually enter all the information as well as a breakdown of pricing. Cool.
So, in the end, I don’t know, frankly, I’m still not super impressed with this place… HOWEVER, to me, management/​ownership means a lot. Knowing that the business has a culture where they are committed to making things right, is great insurance that deserves mention. If I lived in the area, I’m sure this would be my go-​to optometrist. However, I originally came here thinking it was worth going out of my way to pay them a visit, but I’ll likely support my local optometrist in my neighborhood who also has a very good reputation next time I need glasses. No hard feelings, I just think that the convenience would trump any advantage, perceived or real.

First time visit with Dr. Blanc, wonderful experience. Professional and friendly and thorough! Finished up exams and had my new frames and lenses in just over an hour. Highly recommended for the service as well as the convenience.

Easiest, quickest, and more enjoyable eye exam ever! No wait time, staff are really friendly. My appointment was with Dr. Moshe. It lasted like 10 minutes. I don’t have eye insurance and the contacts eye exam was 88 $. Kaiser wanted to charge $ 120. It may be a little cheaper at like WalMart or Costco but for the ease and friendliness here, the extra few bucks are sooo worth it. Will be using this place every year for sure.

Wow, Newport Avenue Optometry. I called in for an emergency screening as I woke up with a severe, unbearable pain and redness in my left eye. They were quick to accommodate and fit me in between scheduled patients. Considering the circumstances, I felt satisfied and relieved with the thoroughness and explanation by the doctor, Dr. Ben-​Moshe.
The entire staff is exceptionally friendly and the office and storefront are very, very nice. It is also clear that they are professional and unimaginably efficient. They were able to diagnose (and temporarily relieve) the pain, perform a quick eye exam, fit me for a temporary eyeglass frame, have the lenses made, call in my prescription for me, and then dilate my eye … within 45 minutes. Truly amazing.
I’m not at all surprised by the other reviews, this is truly a 5-​star operation.

I’m not usually writing about places like this (usually restaurants!) but Newport Eye is really fantastic. Super friendly staff from the front desk to the doctors themselves. Everyone is very efficient and scheduling is easy as they have reasonable hours and are even open on Saturdays.
I felt like I was in and out quickly, well, except when I was picking out my new frames and sunglasses and got chatting… that’s on me, though!

Dr. Eli Ben Moshe is great and very friendly. They take care of you right away, no sitting around. Kristin was excellent, nice, friendly and very helpful. They had glasses for me within 20 minutes of ordering them. Amazing service!

Great service, attentive doctors, good location. Couldn’t think of a better eye exam experience

First optometrist I’ve used in San Diego and won’t be using anyone else anytime soon.
Found them on Unilocal and haven’t been disappointed. Courteous and professional staff. I’ve bought glasses and soft contacts from them. Used my vision insurance and they didn’t have any issues. Been back twice for small repairs for my glasses and both times they happily took care of the issues.
Also a great location if you need to kill time. Take a stroll down Newport and enjoy OB…

They go above and beyond to provide good service. This is my regular place. I was on vacation and lost my glasses so I had to go elsewhere to get a prescription for emergency glasses. I held off because I didn’t think it was right.
When I returned to San Diego I went into Newport and got a better prescription. Ended up not liking the frames and went back to exchange them a few days later. All this and no problem from them. These days you are just waiting for the trouble to start. It never does at Newport.

I’ve only lived in San Diego for two years, so I’ve only been here twice for my annual exams, but I LOVE this office. From the front desk to the doctors, and everyone in between, everyone is extremely kind, professional, and efficient.
I love that they have a wide selection of glasses and are genuinely interested in finding you something that fits your style/​taste and your wallet. What I absolutely love is that your glasses are ready with your new prescription within 20 – 30 minutes. I’m originally from the central valley, so we don’t have fancy things like that. Who doesn’t want to skip out on waiting two weeks to get your new glasses?
I’ve seen both Dr. Eli Ben-​Moshe and Dr. Jared Hagan and I love them both and are equally great. You really can’t go wrong at this location.

I’ve been wearing glasses for forty years. I’ve seen a lot of optometrists. Most recently, I went to Costco because they were inexpensive.
I will never go anywhere else now. Dr. Ben Moshe is super smart, caring, and focused on doing a great job. He has really cool equipment to figure out your prescription (the «which is better? 1 or 2? machine» is controlled remotely), but he also uses old school prisms to help explain things. He spent lots of time with me and helped me get a super clear prescription for my glasses and contacts. He even took the contacts out of my eyes for me. Who does that? Everyone in the office is friendly and good at their job.
And, the best best part? This office charges just $ 5 more for an eye exam than the optometry mill experience at Costco. I’ve never felt money was so well spent.
To sum up: go here for a prescription. You will have no regrets.

After going to the same eye doctor for around 10 years and moving to San Diego, I was a little nervous to find a new eye doctor. I’m so glad I decided to go with Newport Avenue Optometry. From the moment I called the office for an appointment, everything ran very smoothly. I was given an appointment very soon after I called; no waiting months to get in to see the doctor. On the day of my appointment, they accommodated my work schedule so that I still arrived to work on time. I didn’t even have time to sit down in the waiting room.
The staff was very friendly, including Dr. Ben-​Moshe. They were quick, but not rude at all. I felt the exam by Dr. Ben-​Moshe was very thorough. He answered all questions I had. I trust him completely with my eye health. My contacts came in within two days. Very happy with the experience! The office is comfortable and updated. I didn’t have a chance to look at frames, but I plan on getting some prescription sunglasses here soon!
