Nicholas Anton Zubyk, MD

I have been seeing Dr. Zubyk for 10 yrs. I first met him while taking my parents to their appointments. Unlike lots of other surgeons who I found to have no bedside manners Dr Zubyk was kind, gentle and sincere, both my mom and dad loved him and I often overheard them saying great things about him to their friends!
When my eye problems started I didn’t have a second thought about who I would rush too and trust! His staff follows in his footsteps for they too are all very professional, kind and sincere which put me at ease with my worries and fears. The ladies in the front office are sweet as they come and always remember my name making me feel important. Not just a number and or chart. His back office Ladies do the same with all their procedures. I never feel like they only have 10 minutes to explain my condition and necessary steps to recovery.
I’ve learned from my parents — choose the best Doctors and you’ll be under the best of care.
No other eye specialist for me and my family-​Dr. Zubyk is the best!!!

As soon as I stepped into this office, I was instantly greeted with a warming welcome and caring smile by the front desk gal named Karen. As soon as I was helped by Karen she offered me delicious cookies (I grabbed about three more as soon as she walked away) and hot fresh coffee. The wait for my exam was less then 10 minutes :) PERFECT!
I was greeted by a lovely bubbly Linda. She was full of joy, and super sweet. We walked into the exam room (which was so neat, and organized) and I got to learn about my exam. I felt comfortable being in there, the staff and doctor is super friendly! Dr Zubyk came into the office to get a quick glance, and I have to hand it to him. He is the nicest ophthalmologists out there! I will always return to the friendly staff, delicious coffee and cookies, and friendly Dr in town!

I recently had an eye emergency, I called Dr. Zubyk and he was able to see me right away (within the hour). He saw the amount of pain I was in and quickly diagnosed me and provided me with a prescription. He took the time to explain to me why I was experiencing so much pain and he helped calm my nerves. He truly provided such excellent and thorough care!
I am very thankful and appreciative that Dr. Zubyk was able to treat me on such short notice. I would highly recommend Dr. Zubyk and his friendly staff.

If you are looking for the best Opthamologist in town; look no further. I have been seeing Dr. Zubyk for the past 8 years and would absolutely recommend him 100%. He was recommended to me by my long-​time family eye doctor when I had a unusual eye issue arise. Dr. Zubyk got me in right away, and provided excellent, friendly, concerned and thorough care every step of the way.
The front office staff is extremely friendly, professional and efficient. They have free parking, and even offer free coffee, and cookies — nice touch! At the end of the day, I want a doctor who is knowledgeable, who I can trust, and who cares about my health, and Dr. Zubyk is absolutely all these things.

Terrible experience. They refused to see my grandmother because she has HMO insurance. She has been seeing him for a DECADE and he turned her away because she recently had her insurance changed. The doctor explicitly told us that he wouldn’t take anyone on HMO insurance because it is «welfare»!! You get paid just the same, why are you so high and mighty to refuse a 92 year old woman care because of the type of insurance she can afford? Is this Beverly Hills, you only treat the wealthy? Isn’t there an oath you take to protect and care for people? My grandmother is distraught because she has to go to a new doctor after over 10 years. You should be ashamed of yourself. You do not deserve to treat anyone with that attitude. You would be paid just the same, and now my elderly grandmother is the one suffering. I’d put 0 stars if I could.

This doctor knows his stuff! I scheduled an apt at 8:30am. I was in and out and was seen by Dr Zubyk. He’s a great Doctor. The lady staff in the front who helped me just before I saw him were very sweet and welcoming! Their office had updated catalogues that I enjoyed looking at and they even had cookies to calm my nerves. This is where I’ll be continuing to come if I ever need anything else don’t by Dr Zubyk and you better believe I’m making my family switch to this location!

This is less a review of the doctor than his policies and staff customer service. I recall Dr. Zubyk himself being more or less fine, but he’s likely lost me regardless.
There is a procedure called a refraction, which means getting your eye prescription if you have your dictionary handy. This is identical to the procedure you likely do every year at any «eye doctor» (most commonly an optometrist) to create or update your eyeglass or contact prescription and is (almost?) always covered by VSP, which I have. Turns out that this office does not accept VSP but rather places signs around the office and makes you sign a form saying that they will charge for a refraction when necessary and it’s rarely covered. The screwed part is that this procedure is effectively required for almost any eye work, since they will not trust any prescription from any other optometrist or ophthalmologist, no matter how recent it is.
Expect to pay this $ 60 fully out of pocket for a common procedure that you’ve probably never paid for before and is likely mandatory for any work, so I dropped a star. Btw, don’t bother putting a note on your release form saying you won’t authorize a refraction due to bringing a recent eye prescription, because that will lead to the next problem, which is much worse and what prompted this review.
Dropping this two more stars due to the heated response I received when asking what this procedure is and why I needed to pay out of pocket for a procedure I’d been receiving for years at other optometrists and ophthalmogists (in northern CA) without such charges. Effectively, I had to interrupt her to talk her down and get my actual questions answered, which is horrible customer service. They should try to understand the question before getting so worked up about something else. I deal with customers all the time, and I can assure them that not listening and getting angry with the customer is the worst response.

My mother has been a patient for several years and they have been monitoring some cataracts that she has in both eyes. 2 years ago they became much worse and she was prescribed additional medication to put in her eyes. She currently has 3 eye drop bottles that uses daily. My mother is on limited insurance medicare and united health care and she had asked the Dr. when he would be able to operate to remove these cataracts. We knew that her insurance is limited but we had the impression once it has worsened the Dr would remove the cataracts. She first asked the Dr when he thought she could have the procedure and this was about 2 years ago. And the Dr came back with «we’ll lets see how the election goes and if I can operate.»
So we weren’t too happy with that response but we still believed that once her cataracts started to actually blind my mother that even with her limited insurance that she would get the prodedure to remove her cataracts. She had an appointment a few months back and told the Dr. that she can barely see at all out of one of her eyes and his response with something to the effect that with her insurance he cannot operate something to the effect that she wasn’t in the «right region.» so her coverage would not allow him to do the procedure. So I told my mother to contact her insurance companies and let them know what is happening. The agent at Medicare told her that shouldn’t be happening and she contacted his office. The agent at medicare called Dr Zubyk’s office that nurse there confirmed that due to my mothers limited insurance they will not operate. So the medicare agent called my mother back and indicated she should find another DR. which we have done. The nurse from Dr. Zubyks office also called my mother and asked her «did you call your insurance company?» and my mother said yes she did and the nurse said again that you are not in the correct region or something to that effect and the Dr cannot operate.
We just feel that the Dr. is allowing politics to dictate on what surgeries he will perform and that his bed side manner needs some adjustment. So don’t go to this Dr with limited insurance or if you’re not a republican.

Your search is over. Dr. Zubyk and all his staff are amazing. Dr. Zubyk has been chocen to be «San Diego’s Best» for many times and I see the reason. He is extremely professional, caring but the most importantly, you can trust his credibility and knowledge. His staff are all nice and willing to answer any kinds of questions. I have never waited for more than 5 to 10 minutes.
I used to go to a local eye doctor but since she found that I might have glaucoma, I was sent to see Dr. Zubyk. So I know that Dr. Zubyk is specialized in that area and he has treated so many patients.
I highly recommend Dr. Zubyk to anybody!

Don’t look any further! You have found the right ophthalmologist! I had gone to Dr. Kahn at the Morena Costco and they had referred me to West Coast Eye to see an ophthalmologist as I had an eye infection that needed to be cleared up. I called their office and they immediately told me the office visit would be $ 160 and they are located near La Mesa. This is my eyes we’re talking about so the money wasn’t an issue… the problem was I live in Point Loma and they are a lot out of my way when I’m having sight problems. I decided to go to Unilocal and find a local doctor and that is where I found Dr. Zubyk (loved he had five stars) and I am only sorry that I didn’t know of Dr. Zubyk before I chose Costco (discovered they only have 2 stars, oops). The office visit was $ 100 ($ 60 less… seriously…wow) and I have never been treated better than by Dr. Zubyk and his staff. Very professional, but like a family atmosphere. I was pretty scared, my eyes were really bad and now one week later I am cleared to go back to Costco and get my contacts. The medicine prescribed to me really worked, my eyes feel healthy again and thanks to the staff– they sent me to Target to get my prescription filled, and on their recommendation I received the «Costco» price saving me even more money! Happy I was able to save money, but more importantly, my eyes are healthy again and that is worth sooo much more. Thank you to Dr. Zubyk and his entire staff for a wonderful experience and an even more wonderful outcome! I highly recommend Dr. Zubyk, I am so very glad I found him and his staff!

I had pink eye. Bad. 2+weeks, vision going blurry. I called at 8:30 this morning desperate to get an appointment today. The receptionist sounded more interested in getting me in today than concerned about the details of my insurance coverage.“I can slip you in at 9:30… actually come now we’ll get you in.
I walk into the waiting room, smiling receptionist, takes my info, less than 10 min and I’m being given a cursory exam, 5 minutes later Dr Zubyk is by my side concerned and sympathetic. He gives a detailed inspection of my eyes rattles off one infection after another to Linda whom I hear cooing her own sympathies aloud. Dr. Zubyk lists the medications I’ll need, gives me sevral free bottle and proceeds to generously douse. no… inundate my eyes in soothing medication,. Hey stays to entertain my questions and seems to encourage them. He wishes me a speedy recovery and wants to see me again in 10 days.
Back to Linda, who gives me proper dosage information and continues to lend sympathy as if I were her son even though she could be no more than 5 years my elder ;).
I love this office, I know the Doc is a specialist… but his office runs like a family practice straight out of «Little House on the Prairie.»
Yeech, I know… too much, but if only visits to other Doctors were as… I’ll spare you the list of good adjectives.
I do wish Dr Zubyk would stop slacking and add Dentistry top his skill set, I’b be the first to sign up.

I really hate to leave a bad review, especially with so many positive experiences, but I have to share my experience.
While vacationing in SD I woke up on the last day of vacation with a swollen, red, extremely painful eye. After searching for two hours what doctors my insurance covered I ended up at Dr. Zubyk’s office. I had to wait a little over an hour, but I did not have an appointment so I figured it would take a little bit.
Dr. Zubyk was nice, caring and had great bedside manner. (He even called me a few days after to check up on me). This is why he gets the 2 stars.
This is why he doesn’t get 5.
He ended up looking at my eye for 2 seconds and said it was an erosion of the cornea and prescribed some eye drops and I was on my way. Told me I would be feeling better by this time tomorrow.
Well. tomorrow came and it was worse. The pain was unbearable so I called the office. I asked if this was normal and if there was anything else I could do. He told me warm compresses would help but I just needed to let the drops work its course. Two days later I started losing my sight. the pain. I just can’t describe the amount of pain I was in. and my eye was swollen, bloodshot, and just beyond disturbing looking. I called again to follow up, but again, didn’t seem to be worried and told me to see my regular doctor. So I did. I ended up with a referral to another opthamologist and it turns out it was a corneal ulcer and I needed surgery. We tried some compound drops, but without luck I was told surgery is still an option because of the fact it went so long without being properly treated. I have just recently started getting my vision back and the pain has gone down quite a bit.
Zubyk was a nice and friendly doctor, but after a misdiagnoses and hundreds and possibly thousands (because of surgery) of dollars later. I am not happy.
It is hard when you know he is a nice guy, but I would rather have a doctor that is right and has terrible bedside manner, than a «nice guy» with a misdiagnosed ulcer.

Unfortunatly for me, during my vacation in S.D. my eye started what was like looking thru a dirty window, millions of tiny bubbles, tree branches and clouds coming by… quit the STORMY eye!
If this happens to you, QUICK… get your eye looked at asap.

I went to a walk in clinic and they immediately sent me to Dr. Zubyk. They run the best and most friendly office there is. Efficient and no messing around. «Dr. is a GEM. I would hightly trust him again with any eye trouble and value his advise.

This isn’t a pretty story, but it has a happy ending. Ladies, if you think I’m attractive now, you’ll really love me after this one.
For a short while last year, I was the proud owner of a chalazion. What began as a stye (hordeolum) — a bacterial infection near my eyelid — became a nasty, calcified cyst under my left eye. Apparently this is a fairly common infection, but I’d never heard of it before, so I didn’t know enough to treat it right away, and I ended up needing to get it removed. The cyst wasn’t painful, but it was pretty ugly. And while I’ve already corralled a lovely girlfriend (who still loved me in spite of my deformity), I still need all the help I can get. So I figured I had better do something about it.
Dr. Zubyk was recommended to me by my ophthalmologist, and he gets very high marks for both efficiency and transparency. It took two visits — the consultation and the surgery — and everything went very smoothly. (Dr. Zubyk said to me he’s worked on a million chalazions, so I’m assuming my surgery was pretty normal stuff.) I’m always armed with a battery of questions, and he answered every one. I’m also a coward and a whiner, and the surgery hurt a lot, but they put up with my shenanigans and I am grateful for it.
I also was extremely pleased with the billing process. Before I ever set foot in the office, I got price quotes on everything. After my insurance was applied, there were no surprises, and the amount I owed was exactly what they said it would be.
So, by all means, keep your eyelids clean. But if you end up with something dirty and nasty in there, come see this guy.

Very organized office, excellent Ophthalmologist!
I was referred here by my doctor. It took over 2 months to get an appointment. Now I know why. Dr. Zubyk is very good at what he does. He listened to my concerns, did a thorough exam and gave me an excellent explanation, diagnoses and prescription.
Sometimes the Costco exam is just not enough…
It doesn’t get any better than that!
