History

Established in 1945.

The Old Town Inn had its origin in 1945 when my grandfather retired as a Brigadier General in the Marine Corps. He came to San Diego to remedy a problem he’d experienced while in the military: a lack of quality, affordable lodging for servicemen and their families. He purchased what was then the Blue Bell Motel, at that time it was the first hotel travelers saw after their day long journey from Los Angeles on Hwy 1 or Pacific Hwy.

Now managed by the 3rd generation, the hotel has evolved. The oldest buildings are gone, replaced by our new, large «deluxe» rooms. We did keep some of the original buildings. The rooms in these buildings, our «economy» rooms, have all the amenities our deluxe rooms have but in a smaller historical package.

Our hotel has gone through many changes, but our company culture has remained the same, to provide outstanding customer service, quality and value to our guests.

I started at the Old Town Inn in 1993 in a housekeeping role, in the 21 years since then, I have moved into the general manager position. Personally, it is a great pleasure working for a business that cares for their employees and gives them the opportunity for advancement.

Having worked at the Old Town Inn for twenty-​one years, I have seen many improvements made to our property, many of our repeat guests would agree. It is wonderful working for a business that invests back and believes in providing great service and quality to their guests and their employees.

If I could give this hotel zero stars I would.
This place is in a scetchy neighborhood. When we showed up to check in there were police officers outside the hotel. There is homeless people all around and tents set up on the streets. If I would have known where this hotel was located upon making my reservation I would have never made one. We found a nicer hotel in a nicer neighborhood for not much more

Awesome! Great for budget traveling. Cozy and super easy to drive to things, plus there is free parking! The front desk was very friendly and helpful, they even let me check in 3 hours early. Totally recommend.

Came here for a trip to the San Diego zoo and stayed 3 nights. Rooms were priced at a value above the cheapest but got shampoo, soaps, and Continental breakfast. Room was clean and had more than enough towels. Check-​in and check-​out were easy and courteous and respectful. WiFi available for browsing and theres a DVD library. Breakfast alone was worth it with oatmeal, waffles, and crustless quiche. Located within walking distance to old town and driving distance to a lot of major attractions. Parking can be difficult with a small lot, but we had no issues getting a spot close to our room. No major complaints and when I’m in San Diego again, I’d definitely check here to make reservations.

Best location! Good breakfast including hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, bagels, muffins, make your own waffles, fruits, juice, coffee. Bed linen, bathrooms, overall room was clean, I got one with a kitchenette, was equipped with required dishes and cutlery. Free WiFi, free parking. With all that, no one could beat the price. Would definitely wanna stay here next time.

Rooms were clean and nice. On Sunday December 13th I was in my room. I heard a loud noise coming from the front door and saw the door attempting to be forced open. I had both the security Bolt and the security Latch locked. The housekeeper had used her pass key to open the lock and the security bolt however the security Latch prevented the door from fully opening. Despite that security Latch they still attempted to open the door. This occurred at 1040 hours. This was very disturbing and UNSAFE.
On the outside of the door I had placed the DO NOT DISTURB sign clearly visible. When she attempted to force her way into my room the sign fell to the ground where she left it as in the photo.
Also as in the photo she SET UP CAMP outside my door for several hours prior to this. I guess she JUST COULD NOT WAIT to clean my room and WANTED TO BE CERTAIN THAT I KNEW THIS.
I know what time check-​out is and I don’t need a housekeeper attempting to force her way into my room nor camp out for several hours at my door to remind me PRIOR to check out time.
As in Hundreds of previous hotels I have stayed at the normal procedure is for the Front Desk to call first if there is any reason to inquire about check out. 1040 hours is NOT 1100 hours yet. Further a courtesy knock AFTER 1100 hours would be appropriate. NEITHER A CALL OR KNOCK was done before she attempted to force her way in.
The adjoining room was empty on Saturday night and had already been cleaned on Saturday morning. Why she was still in there cleaning Sunday morning for several hours camped outside my room is frankly Strange.
I was EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED with this service by their employees.
I attached 2 photos of the area outside of my room which depicts the CAMP OUT of housekeeping and the Do Not Disturb sign on the ground.

Stayed here to celebrate our anniversary, just a one night get away and we chose the Jacuzzi Suite. Staff super friendly, welcoming and made the ease of reservations and check in perfect. Continental breakfast (fresh fruit, pastries, waffles, oatmeal, bagels), parking really close to hotel rooms, some DVDs to rent for the DVD players in room… overall, experience awesome! Bed, pillows super comfy. Room gorgeous and totally updated/​renovated.
Cons: $ 208 out the door on a Saturday night (that’s pretty expensive still for a 2 star hotel not in the nicest section of Old Town), TV sound is programmed so if you’re hard of hearing, forget watching the news/​movies to rent (however I appreciate the thoughtfulness behind the gesture of sound control), also our DVD player did not work (there’s only a couple main buttons that are necessary to push, not rocket science, so didn’t work, we didn’t get to watch a movie)…
Overall, I would stay here again in the same room for another getaway since the part of town doesn’t matter to me and we didn’t really care about the TV.

The room I had (210) was small but very clean and comfortable for a older hotel. The staff where very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was very good and offered the usual stuff you would expect from a upper end continental breakfast. The price was fantastic for a holiday weekend. I got out after two nights for less then $ 200.00
It was right across from old town San Diego and the trolley to take you to Qualcomm stadium or a bunch of other shopping centers.

My family and I booked several rooms at this hotel while we were in town for a wedding. My husband, son, and I stayed for eight nights and we wished we could have stayed longer! The staff members were (mostly) excellent, helpful, and informative. The rooms were large and kept very clean. The location left a little to be desired if you are looking for a place with a view, however the location was very convenient and close to the trolley and freeways.
Breakfast was nothing special, however there were a lot of options. They offered waffles, steel cut oats, muffins, danishes, hard boiled eggs, and a variety of cereal. We ate breakfast here more mornings than not. Our group would have loved to see other options such as scrambled eggs or bacon, but what they offered was tasty and fresh.
I can’t recommend the Old Town Inn enough and we can’t wait to go back!

My husband and I stayed here mid-​September, and we loved it! We felt at home immediately. Our bedroom was clean, the bathroom is clean, the beds are comfy, and there’s an ironing board in their storage area which was convenient for us. Even if our room was near the highway we didn’t find it noisy at all. They also have a laundry area here with a washing machine and a dryer which you can pay to use ($ 1.50 each), vending machines and free flowing lemon water till late night! The overall look of the place is quite cozy like a part of your country home. Great customer service by the reception. The price is also quite affordable and you also get free breakfast! I would definitely be back here again.

I found Old Town Inn listed in an «affordable options for families» guide to San Francisco. I was impressed from my first call — the staff is incredibly friendly and professional and made us feel welcome — like our business really mattered — so different from most chain hotels.
The Inn is centrally located to all the attractions we wanted to see — only minutes from the zoo, the aquarium, Sea World, the embarcadero, and the airport. It’s also within walking distance to Old Town and a major transit hub. Many shops and restaurants are only a few blocks away down Rosecrantz.
We booked one of the hotels’ two family suites and were overall very happy. The living area is spacious, with a sleeper sofa and kitchen dinette. The separate bedroom had two queen beds to accommodate our family of two adults and two little kids. The bedroom did not share a wall with any other rooms and was off the highway so it was quiet for sleeping children.
Best of all — our stay was very affordable!
Things to know: this particular area of town is not very pretty to look at – there’s a huge military complex across the street, and homeless people sleeping under the underpass a few blocks away. The walls are very thin: the rooms open to the exterior and at times it was very loud from outside and next door/​above. The heated pool was pretty chilly and the complimentary breakfast was mostly processed foods. All that said, we’d stay here again for sure!

Was extremely pleased with the service. Made great accommodations for us. Breakfast was decent, and I appreciated the effort (more than just some frosted flakes and bananas). I’d particularly like to compliment the front desk staff– they made sure we got the best room at the best rate possible.
Room itself was clean and well maintained, showers and toilet area were clean, and the bed was comfy.
I also like the distance of the hotel from old town and restaurants.

I can’t say enough about the service at this hotel! My sister and brother-​in-​law are staying there for their anniversary this weekend. I wanted to send them a bottle of champagne to celebrate; I called the front desk and Kate answered. I asked about liquor delivery options, etc. and she was SO helpful! She researched and called around and found a great delivery option. She also typed a note (with hearts!) for them and offered to chill the champagne and glasses until they arrived. WAY above and beyond! To top it off, an employee dressed as the green Power Ranger (it’s Comic Con!) delivered the glasses and champagne to their room!!! Because of Kate and the green ranger, my sister and brother-​in-​law had an anniversary they will never forget! THANK YOU, Old Town Inn!!!

After seeing the many positive reviews decided to stay here for our day trip to San Diego on the night of 4⁄25. Staff is friendly and check in and out was a breeze.
This is a cute older hotel with close freeway access within walking distance to all the cute shops and restaurants in Old Town or just a short walk over to the transit station if you want to go venture off without worrying about parking. The hotel does have free self parking and adequate space for the rooms offered, coming back at 1130 pm on a Saturday night we were able to find several available spots.
Clean room, bathroom, large closet space. Several little nearby areas to walk your pup to potty.
Very convenient location. The complimentary breakfast was ok. Some fresh whole fruits, hard boiled eggs (over cooked however as the yolk had started to green so had that sulphuric smell/​taste.), pastries, muffins, bagels, toast, waffle station and oatmeal with optional add ins. Coffee/​orange juice. Or option for hot water and hot chocolate. Plenty of seating. Definitely a nice snack option but I’d suggest checking out one of the local breakfast joints.

The Old Town Inn is a pretty nice spot for a low-​key getaway to San Diego, if that’s what you’re looking for.
It’s a third generation, family owned and operated San Diego business, which makes the service more personable and quaint. There’s the typical hotel breakfast of, like, orange juice and a muffin. There’s a pool. There’s a DVD library in case you want to hang out in the room and watch movies (for free!).
If you want to head out, the hotel is located in a kind of hard-​to-​access industrial area, but it’s very close to all the major San Diego attractions, i.e. SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park.
Because of its location, the hotel is quiet and chill. Our room was in the little cottage area out back — it’s separate from the rest of the hotel and feels more like staying in a cute duplex. I really liked it. The landscaping and architecture are also quite pretty.
Bottom line: the Old Town Inn is a cute, quiet place to relax off the beaten path in San Diego. Check it out.

I stayed at the Old Town inn for two nights to go to a convention about 8 minutes away. I reserved a room with two full beds having made my reservation in advance online a week prior. I arrived early (two hours before check in time) and luckily there was a room ready. When I made my reservation online I did ask for a room on their top floor to avoid people who like to stomp. Unfortunately there were no rooms like that available but the ladies at the counter did give me a room in one of the cottages which are one story. I was happy about this but a little worried since the cottages are attached and mine in middle section almost near the pool.
My room was fine. It was as described with a bathroom with standing shower, two full beds, a closet with an iron/​ironing board, and a tv with DVD player.
Everything was fine until the first night. Around 7pm my neighbors got in. On one side the guy blasted his tv so the noise came through my wall. And on the other side it was much worst. I guess parents of an adult bipolar guy were staying next to me because the bipolar man kept complaining in a whiny voice about something while the parents tried to calm him. Luckily I heard though the wall that he had his own room somewhere else. The noise didn’t end there. The parents still talked and laughed loud while watching tv. I had to turn on the room heater to try to block them out.
After getting a little sleep the previous night, I had the free breakfast in the dining room. It consisted of a make-​your-​own-​waffle station, fruit, boiled eggs, cereal, pastries, oatmeal, juice, or coffee. A nice little selection which you can take back to your room if you didn’t want to stay in the dining room.
My second night there was a little better. The loud parents and their «child» must have checked out because it was dead quiet that night (but I could hear someones heater/​air conditioner humming away). Overall my stay wasn’t too bad. The staff was nice, I had a good breakfast, they offer DVD’s to check out and watch in your room, and etc. My only gripe was the really thin walls of my room. Would I stay again? Maybe. Their rates were better than other hotels and I would probably choose a room at the end of a building if possible.

All rooms are non-​smoking & the walls are extremely thin, they give you tiny soaps & shampoo (no conditioner). Free breakfast by the lobby, the best part is the make your own waffles. Parking spots are really small & both my husband & I drive trucks.
They also has discounted tickets for the San Diego Zoo and Seaworld.

Stayed here during Memorial Day Weekend with my husband and 2 of our dogs. Whenever we travel, we always like to bring our dogs with us (often times it is cheaper for us to do this instead of putting all of our dogs in a pet hotel). Whenever we visit San Diego, we usually stay at the Travelodge because it is cheap and in a fairly good location. But when planning our trip this time around, we both decided that we wanted to try another place and so after doing some research, we both thought staying at the Old Town Inn would be a great place.
Generally Old Town Inn is pretty affordable (usually $ 100 per night, but since we stayed during a holiday weekend it was $ 15 – 20 more a night which was still pretty reasonable, especially with the other pet friend hotels we searched, they were asking for more). This hotel comes with free wifi and a complementary breakfast every morning, which were a few other factors we wanted when we were searching hotels. Also the location is right across the street from the bus/​train/​trolley station and also Old Town San Diego is w/​in a reasonable walking distance.
Check in and check out was very easy and painless. The woman who checked us in upon the 1st night was very friendly and told us that coffee, tea, water were available in the hotel lobby 24 – 7 and we were welcome to rent 2 DVDs from their library at a time (there is a DVD player in every room). They also sell popcorn at the front desk in case you didn’t bring any of your own. Breakfast is also served each day until 10 am.
Afterwards, we finally headed to our room and brought up our luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. We stayed in a room w/​a king size bed, mini fridge and microwave. The room was clean and fully stocked w/​the usual (towels, soap, shampoo, etc). I liked that there was an additional sink that was outside of the bathroom so you can use it in case someone is using the bathroom.
It was nice that we could request no housekeeping service during our stay since we were with our dogs. We just don’t want our dogs to be disturbed while we are gone (yes our dogs are very important to us… we care about their well being too). We were able to request for clean towels and other essentials any time.
The breakfast we had every morning was good, as it had the basics of hard boiled eggs, steel cut oats, make your own waffle section, bagels/​muffins, cereal and milk and also fruit (apples and oranges, and also sliced assorted fruit as well). There is seating in the breakfast area but you are also welcomed to take your food back to your room as well.
Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and would stay here again the next time we head to San Diego. But I would like to mention that the walls are thin, as we could hear the room of kids (I would say they are high school kids and younger) next to us as they would scream, laugh and such during the day. They would also run down the hallway which upset our dogs and that caused them to bark at them (even on vacation, they are still on duty protecting the home). Also wanted to mention that we had no problem w/​parking, as it was mentioned in a few previous Unilocal reviews. We would come back after 10 pm and still managed to find parking just fine (we did not nab up the last parking spot, so really parking isn’t a problem here).
By the way, AAA members get an additional 10% off their entire stay and the pet fee is $ 15 per dog, per day (limit of 2 dogs per hotel room).
