Established in 2003.

Previously Plaza Haircutters, Plaza Hair Salon has been professionally serving the Rancho Bernardo and broader North County community for over two decades. In 2003, one of our dedicated hair artists, Mai, decided to take the store in a new and modern direction, while still maintaining the same inviting and familial atmosphere that our customers have always loved.

Business Owner

Mai is the fun-​loving owner of Plaza Hair Salon. She has been a hair stylist since 1991. Starting her career off in Long Beach, California as a wedding cosmetologist and budding florist, her passion has always been hairstyling. She was eventually drawn to the lively city of San Diego and it brings her so much joy making her customers happy. Open to all trends as an artist in her craft, Mai is the talented hairstylist that keeps you coming back for more!

I asked for ombré and showed the stylist a picture. She bleached my whole head without telling me and left it in for an hour. She then put such an ashy toner in that it turned gray. I asked for warm bronde ombré, not far from my natural color, and she gave me platinum gray! So awful! She ruined my hair! Avoid this salon at all costs!!!

I have what I consider a simple/​conservative cut but so many hairstylists mess it up! Kim is GREAT, friendly, and knows what I’m looking for. I’ve had some other stylists here but she is definitely the best for me. She works Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. At $ 15 for a men’s cut it’s a steal :)

I have gone to Plaza Hair for years, always with GREAT outcome with both color and cuts. I had Mai do a Brazilian Blowout recently with color and cut and I am so happy with the results. She knows her stuff! I have had many people tell me how good my hair looks.

Made the mistake of rushing to get my hair done for an event, landed at the place closest to my house that had availability. The ladies are very outdated with their techniques/​style and do not take your requests into consideration.
I’m terrible at curling my hair, and wanted a very simple trim and styling of curls pinned out of the front of my face for a wedding I was attending. My first mistake was thinking they would know best. My «trim» was 3 inches, they gave me oily little side bangs I did not want, and quite honestly made me look like a 14 yo Vietnamese girl from the 90s. I tried to be as polite as I could without crying, my boyfriend immediately started laughing when he saw the finished product.
I ended up using the 45 minutes of time I had before leaving the house to brush everything out. It was quite telling during my 2hr visit that 80% of their clientele are of the elder community.

I was really pleased with my haircut by Loan (Lou-​Ann). She took her time and was fun to talk to. The salon’s prices are great and they have a walk-​ins welcome policy, which is how I roll most of the time. Simone was also wonderful and did a super job cutting my squirmy toddler’s hair.
There is no haute-​couture attitude here, which is refreshing. The staff welcomes their customers in a friendly atmosphere, and follow through with prompt, quality service. By saying prompt, I mean that they value the customer’s time, yet they don’t hurry through to move on to the next customer.
I highly recommend Plaza for their prices and top-​notch service. They are a unisex salon, so bring the family.

I’ve been going to Mai at Plaza Hair Salon for over a year now and I’m always happy. I just went there yesterday actually and I’m so pleased with my cut and color. I had not dyed my hair in several years and went to Mai last April to try out ombré — absolutely loved it! Went back again 6 months later for balayage and cut and loved it then! My hair has been growing out nicely along with the color and it’s so fun to go back every 6 months and know it’ll always turn out great and even better each time around! Thanks Mai!

Winnie Chang BUTCHERED my hair! She barely said 2 words to me, sorta glanced at the pic I brought, then proceeded to thin my hair out so much and so randomly it looks like I went through chemo. It’s uneven, awkward and awful! This isn’t haircut regret talking, everyone whose seen me says it’s wretched. DO NOT GO HERE!!!

This place jacked up my hair. Paid $ 35 for haircut w/​shampoo. One of the first things I said is that I had had a terrible experience at a salon in del mar that used thinning shears all over my hair. It can make your hair look and feel damaged. The woman that did my hair basically did exactly what I asked her not to do.
This place has very nice women but I think the language barrier destroyed my hair.
The owner was extremely nice but unfortunately she was not the one who did my hair. I asked to keep the length & wanted layers. I feel like the woman who did my hair did what She thought would look good; not what I asked for. I am super bummed bc I will probably have to spend lots of $$ on hair extensions bc my hair looks worse than it did when I came in. NOT COOL!!! Silly me still gave a tip. Ahhh… live and learn.

What a rare find and so glad I did! I recently moved into the area in August and needed someone who could keep my already short, A-​symmetrical haircut going strong.
I walked into this place and Christine took me right away. I told her what I wanted and she did it. She was so sweet and kind while working and made my hair look great!
Mai (the owner) is very friendly, always optimistic and creates the feeling of being welcomed immediately upon entering. The experience you get while at this little gem of a salon is worth it alone AND they cut hair very well.
I see Christine now every month and hand out her business cards since I get so many compliments on my hair!
(Today is their New Year so HAPPY NEW YEAR LADIES and THANK YOU for making me feel and look GOOD!)

Came in after work… wasn’t very busy which was nice to get service right away.
I’ve been wandering around hair salons for a while now… to find someone I like. I got Tina this time. Very sweet woman! I asked for a trim and to layer more but something must’ve gotten lost in communication. She trimmed it. but I didn’t really notice the layers and one side of my hair is still crooked…
A bit disappointed after reading everyone else’s reviews :(

The ladies at Plaza Hair Salon are so nice and accommodating! I got to have Mai cut and style my hair. She could tell I wanted a low maintenance haircut and suggested layers — which is what I was thinking of beforehand. I mentioned I had 4 kids and she seemed to know right away I probably don’t have a lot of time to style. She worked fast but but with great skill and I love my new do! Thank you Mai! I can’t wait to bring my mom here, since she has been looking for a new stylist. I know she would love it here.

I am so pleased to announce that I have my new monthly haircut location!!! I stopped getting haircuts during summer because who needs to look that professional during this heat anyway?
Wendy is the most amazing hair dresser ever. She is so sweet and I really appreciate that she takes time to take care of your hair. The hair cut that I normally get, which is a 1 inch trim, usually takes most hair cutters 10 minutes before I’m shooed out the door. Wendy shampooed and conditioned my hair, took 30 minutes to cut it while wet, dried my hair, styles it, then even reassessed it to make sure that it looked nice dry as well.
I don’t do much to my hair because I usually don’t have time to in the morning but I really appreciated how she really took care of my hair. She’s got a new usual!

I made a recent visit for my monthly haircut and I’m glad this store is doing well. They repainted their walls and reorganized the salon! The place looks and feels very comfortable. I’m impressed with their consistency with great customer service putting their clients first. They have an outstanding routine performing excellent haircuts and cleaning up right after a session with a client. I don’t feel concerned with dirty residuals left behind from previous clients. The equipment looks updated with new chairs, hair sinks, and hair cutting tools. I appreciate this salon/​barber shop a lot.
