Point Loma Credit Union

If you travel outside the US I would think twice before using them. I recently went on a trip overseas and to my surprise when I hit Bosnia, all of my transactions were declined. It was about midnight there, and I did not have access to any money. This meant not being able to purchase a hotel. There is no way to contact them for immediate assistance on line (which makes it very difficult overseas if you do not have an international call plan. I finally convinced a hotel to let me make an international call. I was told that PLCU does not authorize transactions in certain countries, Bosnia being one of them. They ended up being able to lift the block off my account for 2 days and I was able to withdraw money. Of course, plans change and flights get delayed so once again I couldn’t even use my card at the airport to grab something to eat. I was very disappointed because before I left I let them know I would be traveling and gave them a list of where I would be going. I was never told they do not authorize transactions in other countries. After this experience I am considering moving everything to a bigger bank that is more equipped to deal with international travel and offers ²⁴⁄₇ support.

Very easy to find, lines are never too long. My only issue is they have one person who works there that has very bad customer service, can be downright rude at times and takes forever to process something. I know he is a newer teller but guy should know what he’s doing. One time he said you have this, or it’s going to take a week to clear, then pull up my info and says the exact opposite. He always looks at his watch when you are in front of him and never smiles. I never thought banks were this desperate for tellers.

Closing my account after hearing they have a $ 5 charge if you report your card lost. I guess they think it is smarter to wait until it is used fraudulently (then there is no fee.) I got my fee waived but this is dumb. I have no real reason to stay with them now (Navy Federal gave me a better mortgage rate.)

I have struggled with plcu for years. Poor service, web and mobile tools that are archaic and the people are just not very smart. Guess that’s why I moved my money.

I don’t understand these people complaining about «hidden fees». Every time I’ve ever completed a transaction they have always informed me if there is going to be a fee. In addition, there are signs on the counter by each teller window clearly explaining the fee schedule for this financial institution.
Now for my review; they have always been very courteous and helpful when I’ve come to this location. Whether I’m making a deposit, withdrawal or performing any other transaction, they have always greeted me with a smile and taken good care of me.

I’m a big fan of Credit Unions and this one offers an extra perk if your someone like me and still have ties to back home, in my case Pittsburgh, PA. They offer the SHARED BRANCHING NETWORK! Which is a huge for me.
I have a Credit Union back in Pittsburgh, PA. money is deposited back home, and I can go to PLCU here in San Diego and access the account. I can move money freely between the two accounts and do all the business that I need to do without being in Pittsburgh. It’s a great Credit Union that offers all the same competitive rates as other Credit Unions, and usually has better rates than banks in the area.
I suggest a credit union to everyone.

I’m just as surprised as everyone else. I can’t believe all the low ratings here. My family and I have been a members of PLCU for well over 20 years. I’ve always experienced great service, transparency, and convenience.
I also just went through the auto loan process at PLCU, Monica Godinez was excellent, made the whole process very easy and seamless. Plus, the rate really can’t beat. Yay for credit unions!
In terms of the folks complaining about how they «slip» in fees, that’s totally bogus. READ YOUR LOAN CONTRACTs people. There is clear language about everything, what you opt-​into and what you don’t. I didn’t find anything hidden or fishy.

Wow, I would give this credit union and the Kearny Mesa Branch a minus 5 stars if I could. Teller was rude, manager even ruder. They wanted to charge me $ 5 to cash a $ 140 check written from the Point Loma CU. In addition they needed 2 forms of ID and had to call the writer of the check to verify he had written the check to me. All this for a lousy $ 140.00 check!!! I refused to pay the $ 5 and took it to my bank, the San Diego County Credit Union, where I was told they never charge the $ 5.00 fee to cash a check and will only call the writer of the check if it’s over $ 2500. I As far as I’m concerned, the Unilocal 2 stars rating is way to generous.

I dig the fact that I’m able to access one of my credit unions not in this area. Bravo I have finally found a place in San Diego to access my Sea West FCU account.

I was surprised to see that the star rating for this place isn’t as high as I think it should be! I had an excellent experience.
I recently bought a brand new car chose to finance it through PLCU instead of with the dealer. This place not only had the lowest vehicle loan rates in town but I know several happy, loyal people who have banked with them for decades. I personally have always banked with Chase but I am seriously considering switching. Lynne helped me with my car loan and I loved how she is so quick, efficient, smart and definitely knows her stuff. She’s prompt with phone calls and e-​mails and always has everything ready to go. She understood that I am a busy person and made it such a painless process.

Like others, have received worst in San Diego service. Be prepared to never have a call returned, be lied to and to talk with poorly informed staff.

Absolutely HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. DO NOT put «your» money in this bank — They actually think its THEIR money! Ha. We’ve been members of this bank for over a decade and they still dont know our names, hold our deposited checks for DAYS and have the worst customer service EVER. They are as rude, if not more rude, than BofA, Wells Fargo and the rest of the big banks — and theyre a Credit Union! I think they forgot what a small community credit union is supposed to be. I would hope for a call, email, rebuttal post or something from them, but I am 100% certain they will not address this issue in the least.

They suck!!! Hold my money for over a week because it went into the ATM, FU.
