Be Careful, it’s a scam. After renting the car, the renter accused me of hitting the car and reprinting it. I found out online that many car owners are using this trick to fix their cars via RR Insurance.
I’m new in the country, how the hell I would repaint the car??? They want me to pay $ 2000 although I provided pictures that the car was in excellent condition when I returned it.
If you don’t want to be screwed then avoid those crocks.

I rented out my car via RelayRides and got screwed over, big time. The renter didn’t know how to drive a manual transmission and burnt through the clutch. RelayRides calculated the expected life of the clutch and determined that the renter should pa for 68% of the cost to repair, leaving me to pay the remaining 32% to the tune of about $ 600. DON“T RENT YOUR CAR OUT VIA RELAYRIDES!

The RelayRides site worked well and the person supplying the car was very helpful (picked us up at airport after midnight once we finally arrived on a much-​delayed flight).
The car seemed well-​maintained and clean.
But.
–Our credit-​card insurance coverage for auto rental didn’t cover RelayRides, so we spent $ 50 for a week of inferior coverage with a huge deductible.
–The car simply wouldn’t start once. The next day, it did, but we didn’t feel comfortable with the uncertainty.
–The air-​bag warning light stayed on constantly, indicating that we might have no airbag in case of collision.
–And the price, while competitive with the tiniest cars from major rental outfits, was not a bargain, since it was for an 11-​year old car.
When we extended our trip, we were able to get a much better deal renting an old car from Renty: about half the price, no insurance hassles and the company has its own mechanics on site, who fixed a minor problem on the spot when we picked up the car.

RelayRides offers a great, convenient, easy-​to-​use service.
I rented a car in San Diego for 5 days and was pleased with how easy it was to contact to the owner and setup a time to pickup the car. The car was exactly as pictured and described online. We wanted a Lexus just like the one we have at home, with a built-​in GPS, fully-​loaded, and was able to find a car that met all the specs. We had no problems driving it and the owner was easy to work with. He made good money off the car and we didn’t have to pay 100 a day for a luxury SUV.
I would use this service again and recommend it to anyone looking for a temp solution to their transportation needs!

RelayRides was a great value and it definitely did the job, but my experience was far from perfect. You are dealing with normal people – Don’t expect them to be quite as organized as a car rental company!
I had a pretty good experience with relay rides when visiting San Diego. I wanted to rent a car at the airport, but they were sold out and I was excited to find this website. I asked for airport pick up/​drop off. Pick up was ok, but it took the driver a long time to find me due to some language barriers. They drove me to their parking lot which was in a well maintained older neighborhood. Many houses had bars in the window. I was nervous about returning my car there at 4am (when I had originally planned) and my driver told me that they had not planned to drive me to the airport like I had signed up for. I think there were some additional drivers for the car and we could have worked this out, but I decided to have a friend drop off the car with me the night before since the neighborhood made me nervous. The people renting the car were extremely accomodating with this and quick to respond which I really appreciate. There actually ended up being a police swat team action we had to drive by to return the car, at 5pm on a Sunday. Yikes. I recommend making sure any car you rent is in a safe place!
The car itself ran and drove well and I was happy to have it. I think it was previously a smoking vehicle which had not been specified. Also, the trunk was very difficult to close so that I basically could not use it.

RelayRides has been a Godsend for our 1-​car family. Some weeks come up when we really need 2 cars but it’s not worth buying a second car just for those few times a year. And renting from the agencies at the airport come with super-​high taxes and fees that make it almost cheaper to buy a car! Enter RelayRides where I can rent regular peoples’ cars when they don’t need them.
Reduce the footprint of cars out there, keep my life simpler, and I get to choose exactly which car I want to rent! I was in the mood for turbo one time and economy another. When it gets warmer, convertible will be my go-​to. RelayRides makes it all possible, on my mobile phone even!

So I wanted to rent a car but I didn’t want to spend a ton of money. There’s Lift and Über for cheap taxi-​like services with personal vehicles and their drivers and then there’s Relay Rides.
You can rent people’s personal vehicle, completely legit and comes with the whole contract and option for extra insurance like any other car rental as well as a little background check to make sure you don’t have some crazy driving record.
I rented a 2000 Toyota Corolla for just over $ 19/​day. Granted, the car had only a tape player BUT had an auxiliary cord cassette, winning, it also had a hello kitty steering wheel cover, and it was described as a Mexican family car lol but man, it ran awesome. The owner was cool, communication was decent, her roommate picked me up from the airport earlier than I had booked, and I had no issues with the vehicle. Enterprise rents the corolla for about $ 45/​day so you see the difference. I highly recommend it if you’re trying to rent on a budget.

It’s a great service. It was late at night and I realized that I needed a car for a meeting the next morning. I jumped online and within 5 minutes I had a car set up near my house for a super reasonable price. No standing in line at the rental car agency, no upsells, just a smooth frictionless process for less money. Can’t beat it.

As a follow up, wanted to share that I’ve continued to use it for renting an inexpensive pickup truck for some local furniture shopping. It continues to be easy and as adoption improves, there’s more and more vehicles available, making it better.
My earlier note though still holds true – I don’t consider four hours necessarily short notice if the owner agrees to it. Maybe there should be a minimum of four hours, unless the owner agrees for that particular reservation.

I’ve done relay rides just once, but I look forward to doing it again. I used it on a trip to San Diego and found many good car options close to the airport. I eventually picked a practically new and roomy Civic with 11k miles. The car owner communicated well, was friendly, and professional. My main complaint is that a couple of car owners didn’t even get back to me when I asked about their cars. I look forward to using RR again next time I need a car.

From a renters point of view: Amazing. I needed use of a truck literally for 45 minutes because I had a new piece of furntirue to pick-​up and I HATE U-​haul and the like. People are rude there and they nickle-​dime on mileage etc. Found a local truck for $ 27, she was located about 2 miles from me and she was AWESOME to deal with! So much better than the other guys.
From a provider (someone who had rented my car): I had a generally positive experience. I had a total of 4 renters before taking my car off the listing. One reason was one of the renters left dog hair in the car. I guess I could have updated my listing to clearly state «no animals» but was dissapointed that someone wouldn’t take care of the car as well as I would have. The second reason was a friend in Portland had a poor experience where there was damage to his car but RelayRides said it was «normal wear and tear» and wouldn’t cover the repair under their plan. To me it wasn’t worth possible damage to my vehicle and then be stuck with the bill, or just live with ‘normal’ scratches on a bumper.
As a renter — I’ll use it wherever I go! As a provider, someone who would rent their car, I probably wouldn’t do it again unless I was assured *all* damage would be covered. Until then, I’ll stick to renting and enjoying the other side of it!!!

I am so excited to be a member of relay rides. They are def much better then Zipcar or any regular hire company. You pick your location and then the car you want and then 40% of your total hire fee becomes your premium insurance on top. I find it’s much more convenient and you get to be social and meet other drivers who are willing to hire out their cars to you. Sort of like a car Airbnb. I am very happy I found them and recommend them to everyone wanting to hire a car. Def worth it
