The decoration of my ½ sheet cake was not done as CLEARLY stated on the order form. The taste of the cake did suffice for my disappointment. However, I am giving 2 stars for the poor customer service from Sindy. When asked how the cake was the following day of the party, I informed her of the situation. Mind you, I was pleased with the taste of the cake so I was not complaining… just simply telling her the honest truth with good intent to help her improve the business. She apparently took the information personally and stated«I told you that the decoration would be either fondant OR buttercream». The color of some of the text was also incorrect, but I did not even want to bother bringing that up. Being a perfectionist that I am and after spending numerous hours on planning my little boy’s birthday party, I would NEVER expect the unexpected and settle for an «OR». I told her that I was not trying to in any way negotiate the cost, and that I was just giving her constructive criticism. There was no apology on her part and she handed me over to Grace(who was much more pleasant) to complete my payment. I chose this bakery because of recommendations from friends, and also because I was quite impressed with the photos that others have posted on Unilocal.Unfortunately, I did not receive a 5 star service. I hope this post will help in preventing this kind of problem from happening to others.

Sorry it took so long to update my review!!! But I was first to review them in 2010… and now 4 years later… I’m STILL ordering my cakes from them, and picking one up this coming weekend for my daughter’s 5th Birthday. My contact person is always Sindy and she’s prompt to reply and a pleasure to work with. I usually order about 3 birthday cakes from them a year. I’ve tried other cakes from people’s parties… that look just as good from the outside, but nothing compares to what it tastes like on the inside. I don’t think their pricing is over the top or anything either, especially for the quality taste of the cake and design work. Its definitely reasonable and well worth it. Hands down… marble cake with bavarian cream and fresh strawberries is my favorite. Location has moved to the backside of Scottish Rite Center the last couple years, but it doesn’t matter where they are… I will drive to get my cake.

I used the Renaissance Bakery for my son’s 4th Birthday cake. I spoke with the staff over the phone(never actually went into the bakery to review decoration ideas, etc), and I could not be any happier with the final product! Every detail was amazing! I brought in a few toys ahead of time to drop off for the decorations, and they integrated them into the design perfectly. The theme was Jake and the Neverland Pirates. I ordered the 12 or 14 inch round cake(Can’t remember which, but it was their largest round cake), and it easily served close to 45 people +. It was a white cake with strawberries and cream filling. It was both beautifully decorated and tasted delicious! I will definitely use Renaissance Bakery in the future. Just a note… they are actually located inside the Scottish Rite Center in Mission Valley, not Clairemont. I called a week in advance of my son’s birthday, and picked up the cake the Saturday morning of his birthday party. The staff were all great, friendly, and helpful.

I agree… there should be more reviews on this place. In 2003 I went to a wedding catered by Ranch catering and absolutely positively LOVED the cake by Renaissance Bakery. One thing you have to understand about me is that I am VERY picking about cake. I judge a wedding by the cake :) In 2004 I used Renaissance Bakery for my wedding and was absolutely delicious! My favorite is the Champagne cake with bavarian cream and fresh raspberries. Thereafter I bought their cakes for all kinds of events… anniversaries, birthdays, graduations. I was always pleased. from taste to décor they always did a fantastic job. A couple of years ago they moved to Mission Valley and so the drive became difficult for me to get cakes from them but I have not found a bakery to replace them so for my daughter’s second birthday I made the drive and it was worth it! They do not have an actual bakery that you can walk into but they always accommodate my orders… offering delivery or coordinating times for pick up. They truly have the best cakes in San Diego! And they are affordable. Trust me when I say I have tried over a dozen cake places… from Farmers markets, French bakeries, to highly recommended bakeries… I’ve read Unilocal reviews to find the best and none compare to Renaissance Bakery.

I cannot believe this place has only 1 review. Went cake tasting with my soon to be sister-in-law last weekend. We were at another bakery… things weren’t going so well. Cake was ok, prices were higher than we thought and service was just mediocre. I remembered Casey T. telling me about this bakery. I stepped outside, called Renaissance, asked if someone could help us if we stopped by, and they said yes. The chef came out to greet us, sat us down, brought out several wedding cake books… AND to our surprise… also brought out 4REGULAR sized cake slices for us to sample. Mind you, we did not have an appointment and only called 15 before actually getting there. We then met with a sales rep who happened to be available. Prices and details were negotiated and the outcome was a very affordable deal. Oh yeah… and the cake was GOOOD! We ended up sampling a few other flavors after our initial 4. We just could not get over the level of service we received here. They don’t freeze their cakes and instead of saving your topper for a year… they’ll actually bake you a fresh one when your 1 year anniversary is up!
