Unlike some tax controversy defense attorneys, Richard did not start out his legal career as an IRS attorney using the Tax Code against honest taxpayers. He also did not start out his legal career as a federal prosecutor working to put good people in prison for some mistakes on their tax returns. Instead, Richard has devoted his entire 28 year legal career helping to defend hardworking, family-​oriented taxpayers against the far and powerful reaches of the Internal Revenue Service and he is proud of that accomplishment. Being an effective tax controversy attorney is a mindset, and Richard has had that tax defense mindset for his entire 28 year legal career.

My family and I were referred to Richard by a family friend who is also a lawyer. He came highly recommended. When I called Richard and spoke to his assistant Jody, I gave her the run down of what was happening. We were in his office within a couple of days to discuss what options my father in law had. They were courteous and took time to really explain the process of what was going to happen (we all know how the IRS works) Most of the communication was via email, but all matters were handled quickly and within a reasonable time. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone to seek guidance from Richard and his firm!

I retained Richard Carpenter to represent me during two separate IRS audits. When I received my first audit notice from the IRS, I was very intimidated by the process and overwhelmed. Even though I’m a lawyer, an audit is extremely scary and stressful. I asked some colleagues for recommendations for the best tax lawyer, and Richard’s name was referred to me by more than one person. I immediately contacted Richard and met with him and right away he put me at ease. I could tell he knew tax law inside and out. He was always available and approachable throughout the process. My experience with Richard was first class. One of the companies I own hired Richard to help with an audit. He met personally with the auditor and mitigated our risk substantially. As someone who thinks they know the tax laws, I thought that we were going to have to pay a very hefty bill. It turned out that Richards experience paid big dividends. We avoided hefty penalties, and at the end of the day the actual tax bill was far less than we expected.
