Richard J. Donovan State Prison

First of all, let me reassure all of you that I have never been FORCED to go to Donovan State Prison. But I have visited the facility several times as part of a Prison Ministry. I can tell you that, as one of California’s newer state prisons, it is not a bad facility. The prison guards seem to be benevolent and prifessional and their is a roomy feel to the prison, despite the armed guards and jail cells.
Wikipedia says that «Donovan State Prison is located in unincorporated southern San Diego County, California, and is a 780-​acre facility. It is the only state prison in San Diego County. The prison is situated on a mesa about 1.5 miles from the Mexican border.»
The prison cells were designed to house one person each but now, because of over-​crowding, they now house two prisoners each. Donovan has a nice prison reception center and also five interfaith chapels. These chapels host various churches who send down volunteers to meet with the prisoners, pray with them, and most importantly, offer the prison inmates — -freshly-​baked cookies!
I have only driven past San Quintin up in the Bay Area and walked past the San Diego jail downtown so I am no authority on lock-​ups but I will say that Donovan State Prison seems to be one of the nicer housing options for the freedom-​challenged who have run afoul of the law. Yah, I guess I’m a fan!
