Whenever I visit San Diego, I always make a mission to hunt down some carne asada fries and/or a California burrito. Arriving late from the SAN airport and checking in almost around 11pm, we were dying for some good food near our hotel. What we found was Roberto’s Taco Shop in the Clairemont Mesa area of San Diego. The carne asada fries hit the spot whether your drunk or sober. It needs no introduction since it’s more infamous than Billy the Kid or Bonnie & Clyde. For the California burrito here, maybe I’ll only eat it when I had a beer or two and crave something. There wasn’t any sauce in the burrito. It was just fries and carne asada. Where’s the cheese and sour cream? It was just too dry for me to eat so I had to let it go in peace to the trash can.

Perfect hole in the wall restaurant. Parking isn’t always great though. I usually order take out since they are right down the street from me. This is my favorite place for carne asada fries! Their burritos are great too!

Love this place. It’s super close to me, pretty decently priced, and bomb food! They stay open pretty late, especially on the weekends for those late night munchies after partying. My usuals are carne asada fries or the chicken and rice bowl.

Never ever ever again! My 3 year old daughter and I have been puking(among other things) for the last 24 hours after eating here. Thanks a lot for the funky rolled tacos Roberto

Roberto’s is the best Mexican food in town. I’ve been coming here for 7 years strong! I always get the Pollo Asado burrito, and fish taco. I’ve seen Tony Hawk come in and out of here too. Consider this place«Old Faithful!» Always great any time of the day! Ask for Diablo. He’s the best cook!

So delicious. This place will be the death of me. Roberto’s is less than a three-minute walk away from my apartment, so I go there pretty often. They’re open super late, too. Perfect for dinner or late-night munchies. Their carne asada fries and carne asada tacos are amazing, and they give you a generous portion. They’re always super friendly and generous with the sides of salsa, too.

Cheap and delicious mexican food. We ordered beef burito, chicken quesadillas, and crispy/fried guac tacos. It wasnt the best mexican food that I have had. However the portion was huge and good value. Will come back for take out or a quick bite

We eat here at least a couple times a week. It’s so close/convenient and the food is good. My favorite feature about this particular taco shop(since there’s basically one on every block in San Diego) is that their crunchy tacos are actually fried tortillas, rather than premade taco shells. We usually get chicken crunchy tacos, taquitos(that come with a huge portion of guac), carne asada fries, and the conga burrito(asada, rice, and beans). Their nachos are also bomb, think carne asada fries but with fried chips instead of french fries. Now to the downsides. The shop shares a small parking lot with several other stores so at times parking can be challenging. Also, most of their staff is unfriendly. I think there’s a few people who work their that are actually pleasant to interact with but for the most part the staff is stand-offish. Lastly, there have been a few times where the food was totally gross. The beans were oversalted and the fries were undercooked. But if you’re looking for a quick Mexican food fix, this shop is worth a shot.

Roberto’s was the first place I went too the first time I ever visited San Diego and I am so glad that I did. Super good food for a super great price.

This is the best taco shop in the area, for sure. I’ve had just about everything on the menu and don’t have any complaints. The rice and beans are always good and always fresh.

So let me start out by saying you HAVETO come here on an empty stomach. We decided to go after visiting Seaport Village. It was pretty late at night and we wanted some tacos on the way back to our hotel. I Unilocaled places and this was one of the few the was both open and had good reviews. We got there and it was empty. We placed an order for six tacos total. We sat down while waiting for the food and a swarm of people started coming in. Unfortunately the chefs decided to make everyones to-go orders before our dine in ones which is why they lost a star. When we finally got our food I was astonished at the huge portions. The tacos had double tortillas so I separated my three tacos into six. Yet they were still so massive! I literally ate two out of my newly created six and had to take the rest to go. They were very delicious but definitely too much food.

The fact that I live 2 minutes(walking) makes me thrilled! I love this place — very good portions, fresh, clean, delicious, and great service. I’m a bean and cheese type of person but I’ve tried a lot of the stuff of the menu here and it’s so good! Rolled tacos w/guac is a party on mouth. Any of ya chips(carne asada, guac) are sooooooooo goooood like I ordered them and thought it was going to be a basic bag of chips and side of guac. WRONG! Full on nacho style with cheese and a hefty portion of guacamole. Toooo bomb. Go here if you are in the area and looking to be satisfied.

The food is decent. Open late. But they have a problem with using onions as a filler. Their pico de gallo is 90% onions. Half of a burrito I ordered was filled with them and when I asked for pico on my nachos the onions covered the entire top and I had only a dash of sour cream and guac… I would eat there again but it’s not a place I would recommend to anyone

Solid 3 stars. The burritos are fat and the flavor is good. We were just disappointed that in the carne asada burrito because they only put about a teaspoon of guacamole in them. Which is a bummer. If I eat here again, I will order it with extra guac. Also I think the hot sauce is boring, it needs more flavor.

As I was in the neighborhood with my cousin who used to live within walking distance from here I decided to follow his advice and stop here for a late lunch. In the past I have drive thru a nearby place. However he insisted we went in for their delicious California burritos. As a San Diegan I have learn to love this burrito so I was like okay let me see what they have to offer. Their burritos are huge. My cousin got his California Burrito and I decided to try their Shrimp Burrito. I must say both were pretty amazing. His was crunch fries the carne asada was super tasty and fresh pico and whatever else it was it was delicious. Their shrimp burrito was also amazing. It had a great amount of shrimp in a nicely seasoned red sauce with mexican rice too. A big plus to the awesome burrito was their red salsa. Which was not burning spicy but it was hot enough for you to get a half of bottle worth of it.

Staff was very friendly, it’s even almost midnight. Ordered carne asada burrito and fish taco. Fish taco was not tasty and not fresh fish or crispy. Burrito’s beef was tender with onions and tomato. Got salsa sauces, but it made me want pickles Jalapeño and onions. I really wish they offer pickles like regular Mexican restaurant. It I had jalapeño pickles, I might enjoy taco and burrito more and more.

After a long walk along Mission Bay, I wanted a quick bite and was craving Mexican food. I found this place nearby and ordered two items — the grilled chicken soft taco and the chicken tostada. The grilled chicken taco was awesome! A nice helping of guacamole on perfectly cooked chicken. I’d definitely return here for that. The chicken tostada, on the other hand, was not memorable. Too many retried beans and not enough chicken. And when I found the chicken, it was in huge chunks making it hard to eat as presented. But I’d return to try other things on the menu given the success with the taco.

This place is seriously the bomb! I may or may not be a little biased because it is within walking distance of my apartment, but I have yet to be disappointed by good ol’ Roberto! I typically get the crispy beef tacos which they fry up to a perfectly delicious crispiness and pile loads of shredded lettuce and cheese on top(actually, the amount of cheese is usually a bit much for me so I end up giving my «extras» to my all-too-willing husband!). However, if you love you some cheese, revel in it! They aren’t about the Taco Bell cheese portions here! I have also had the rolled tacos which they smother in their amazing, creamy guacamole(my mouth is watering just thinking about it). My husband raves about their carne asada burritos and loves their bowls which are similar to the bowls you get at Chipotle(only a thousand times better). Just walking by this place does it for me– it always smells so good! Maybe it’s my obsession with Mexican food, but more likely it’s the fact that this place dishes out some seriously good fast food!
