Established in 1980.

It all started in Lemon Grove in the fall of 1980. By late 1988 we were so busy we had outgrown our space and needed to move to larger facilities. In the spring of 1989 we found our current home and have been very successful in helping many thousands of individuals and automotive shops happy with their vehicles. «Stan the Man» is the business owner of San Diego Carburetor. Throughout the years, he has expanded the business from their Lemon Grove space to a larger facility here in University Ave to accommodate their products and specialties including a State-​of-​the-​art Computerized Flow Bench that rebuilds injectors quickly and efficiently. His honesty and commitment to give exceptional customer service brings in a large following of satisfied customers in San Diego for more than 25 years.

Although Stan may be the man if you have a single carburetor vehicle, my experience was not as favorable as I had hoped and paid for. I have a dual carburetor Shelby Mustang. Stan was not able to rebuild or align my carbs (although I paid for both!) and one test drive later, they were back to running poorly. In fact, running worse than when I took it to San Diego Carburetor. They were pouring gas and flooding. When I stopped to get gas, they were so flooded that my car wouldn’t start back up. After this experience, and almost a thousand dollars later, I took my Shelby to another shop and the carbs were rebuilt and aligned to perfection! I sent Stan a letter asking for a refund for work I paid for but was not given. He did not reply.

I took my 1966 Shelby GT350 with two 4 barrels to San Diego Carburetor. This was after taking it to 2 other mechanics including a Ford dealership. No one could get the car to idle under 1,500. No one could get the carbs aligned. Stan and his crew worked above and beyond what the others wouldn’t even attempt. He rebuilt both carbs and put them back to the way they were meant to be. He called me every day with updates. And he met me on a Sunday to pick up my car so it wouldn’t have to be driven in the rain. It’s these extra things along with his expertise that made my nerve racking last couple years trying to get this taken care of, a pleasant experience. Stan is a carburetor expert! Don’t waste your time or money going anywhere else.

In all of our experiences with businesses and professionals, there are only two men we’ve ever met with an amazing passion for what they do … one is Dr. Niemiec (dental specialist to our pups) and the other is Stan.
Stan LOVES carburetors: working on them, talking about them, unlocking their mysteries. For our 1965 Mustang’s carburetor, Stan determined that the float was too high, there were a few wrong-​sized jets and it was dirty, too. It runs beautifully now!
Stan will also set you straight on who the specialists are in town when it comes to having your car in top-​running condition. For carburetors, there’s no one close to Stan … don’t let your regular mechanic touch yours, let Stan work his magic!

My Dad was having tons of problems with his Cobra. It was stalling, flooding, and everything else you can imagine that can go wrong with the carb. We took it to Stan on a Friday morning, by 4 O Clock that same day the car was running better than it’s ever run before. Stan’s the man!

This business knows engines better than anyone in San Diego. I struggled for about a year with low fuel economy on a 2006 Honda Odyssey. 2 different Honda dealers couldn’t figure it out. Another shop said it was the transmission and overhauled it for me. That wasn’t it.
I told my injectors to have them flow tested at this shop. They were fine and Stan barely charged me anything for the flow check. He then spent about an hour talking about the different options I had and things to troubleshoot. I eventually just brought my van back into his shop and he spent a little bit of time troubleshooting all the sensors. He found the problem (slightly bad catalytic converter and a slightly misreading O2 sensor). It was off but not completely off and the diagnostic machines at the other shops were not finding it. He actually took the time to read the sensor and understand the signal to pinpoint it correctly. Whether you have them do the work or you have them do the troubleshooting these guys are first rate.

If you have ANYTHING that has a carb or injectors, Stan is the man! Last minute I couldn’t find a shop to recondition my boats injectors. As a charter operation, we can’t afford to be down for any time at all. The Web only had some places that were out of state, and I’d lose two days of charters if I sent them out. Stan has enabled my old camper van to pass smog inspection twice now when no one else was able to help. Honest, reasonable, and highly-​experienced. The first time he even found a timing issue the smog referees had not noticed which, in conjunction with re-​jetting and adjusting the carburetor, made it possible to pass smog with flying colors. He is, as they say, «THE MAN.»

Stan you are so awesome.
We brought our Rv to get Carburator fixed and Stan went above and beyond to help us.
We had no idea that oreileys had sold us bad spark plugs a champion brand which was no good for ford or any vehicle. Stan immediately knew and told us to use autolite and replace them. We did and noticed a big difference. He also helped us by finding out our oil was leaking into gas somehow. He is very knowledgeable. He really made us feel great. We ended up spending the night next to shop with RV to get the work done next day and Stan was nice enough to give us cards to put in our window so we wouldn’t be harrased. He even recommended a smog shop for us as well.
His dog is a lot of fun.
His girlfriend is nice and I enjoyed talking to her while my husband and Stan were doing their man car stuff.
I highly encourage you all to go to San Diego Carburator where they do good work honest and affordable.

I went in For work in my 1965 dodge van. And I saw a 1970 dodge van in the back of his shop so know I was at the right place. Within an hour he said it was fuel pump. Bing bang boom. All done in less than an hour. Everything works fine and I got a military discount. Highly recommended.

I took my girlfriends dads carburetor that was on his buggy. The buggy sat for 10 years because the carburetor that was on there was an odd version of solex for Italy. My girlfriend dad couldnt find a rebuild kit or could find anyone to rebuild the carb. Stan researched the odd carb and found the parts in Europ.
We gave the carb to my girlfriend dad for christmas and he installed the carb on the buggy and the engine fired up first shot. The buggy runs like a top.

I work on my vehicles, as a hobby/​and to save a buck. I only have shops work on my stuff, when its beyond my abilites. Car fuel/​ignition systems get complicated quickly. My first experience with SD Carb was 15 years ago. They repaired a difficult carburetor problem, another shop botched. Today was my second time at the shop. Todays issue was fuel injection problem. They correctly fixed it. Despite the long gap in time, I learned to visited them first. I strongly recommend seeing SD Carb first. This will save time and money overall.
As a home mechanic I can tell an incompetent/​dishonest shop from a professional one. I find SD Carburetor to be outstanding professionals and honest. But they are busy. Don’t show up without calling, to get a rough idea on your vehicles return time.

When I phoned I told him I needed a new carb. When I took in my vehicle I told him I wanted a new carb. He rebuilt the old one. I was inconvenienced for almost TWO MONTHS. I kept taking it back, he kept messing with it. Finally, he agreed I needed a new one. He put a new one on. NOT the right one (he couldn’t locate one like mine, he says), and I’m still having problems. Don’t go there. It’s a waste of time and money.

its been a few years since i used them so hopefully they are better by now but OMG how is this company still in business? the work was done well enough but the customer service is non existent! it took 2x as long as quoted to complete the task and when i when to pick up my truck they were closed (even though it was well within the posted hours), this happened 2 times. It was so bad that on the 2nd time i called to say i was on the way and would they be there. They said yes until 5pm, i showed up at 3:45pm and the place was locked up for the day. it must be the only game in town to still be around. Save yourself, go anywhere else but here.
