Since 1999, Dr. Stephen Chinn OD has been the leader and preferred provider of quality vision care products and personalized optometric services to our patients in San Diego and the surrounding areas. Our experienced doctors and staff offer comprehensive vision examinations and specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of eye diseases, conditions, and problems.

Dr. Stephen Chinn graduated from U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry in 1972. He has been married since 1977, and has one daughter who has just recently graduated from Optometry School as well and is a new member of the team at the office. Dr. Chinn has been in private practice for over 30 years, he has also been affiliated with Vision Source since 1999. He currently holds hospital privileges for elderly care at Community Convalescent Home of La Mesa, and donates his time seeing patients at La Maestra Community Clinic. He is an avid sports fan who enjoys baseball, football, tennis, and swimming.

Would highly recommended. My kids have been coming to dr. Chinn for more than 2 years. Today was my first time going as a patient and he is really great the girls in the front desk and back are also very nice very friendly very concern. Never had bad service very good customer service. Thank you for treating my whole family.

I gotta say I left completely satisfied and in a jolly good mood after my eye exam at this location. It was my first time here, and talk about above and beyond customer service!
The minute I walked in I was taken back a bit at how well done the establishment was put together. All three ladies that work there are amazing! They’re super friendly and sweet. Each one that I interacted with, from the one that was actually doing some of the eye exam test on me, the one that was explaining to me my options and choices. Since I was using my medical insurance, and of course Dr. Chin was also a nice guy, and very easy to get along with.
They were all great from beginning to end, and left no question unanswered. They were easy to talk to from a person to person level, and just made the whole experience easy and relax full. They have a great selection of frames from well known brands, and of course expect to drop some money. Besides all that I couldn’t find or think of one thing that made my experience unpleasant both time that I have been here now.

Dr. Chinn and his staff are so incredibly friendly every time I visit. They’re always attentive and eager to help you in any way they can, whether it’s to help get a mail-​in rebate taken care or sending text messages to remind you when your prescription is ready.
Dr. Chinn takes his time to explain everything to you in detail and always makes sure to ask about how your day or your week is going. So glad I found this awesome office!

My boyfriend & I needed to see an eye doctor. From the first phone call (we got Flower) it was amazing! They got us both in on the same day and together. The office was clean & bright. Flower was seriously amazing. She was sweet & answered all of my endless questions the whole front desk staff was extremely professional & well educated in handling any questions. When I saw Dr. Chinn, I was also pleasantly surprised! Extremely kind, professional & never rushed me. He chatted with me about the history of their building & San Diego & it was quite interesting. He took the time to explain everything in detail & I felt I got a thorough examination. When my boyfriend had his turn, the office gals even helped us select nice looking frames for him. Sometimes when you go to an office, you feel like a burden or like the staff is to busy or bothered to deal with you. I NEVER felt this way at Dr Chinns office. My boyfriend & I felt welcomed & didn’t have to wait long to be seen either. I would highly recommend this office to anyone! They are truly top notch! Absolutely wonder service. I really respect Dr. Chinn’s talents and, being so keen on making my vision as perfect as possible, he allowed me to try on various contact lens brands and strengths. Because of my astigmatism, the lens may fit on my eye differently after an hour or two so I was so grateful for this so that I didn’t have to stick around the office the whole time. Huge success.

Dr Stephen Chinn has a great bedside manner. He is very friendly, informative and does not rush you. He has a great staff of female assistants that are bubbly and helpful.

I’ve been going to Dr. Chinn ever since I was diagnosed that I needed to start wearing glasses, which has been about over 9 years now.
I started going to his old location on El Cajon Boulevard and now his new location which is on University in North Park.
The new office is a lot nicer, clean, modern, and upscale.
The optometry assistants and receptionists are really nice and can tell me any information I need.
Dr. Chinn is extra nice and is a great guy to talk to! He has years of experience and definitely knows what he’s doing. I’ve never had a problem and service is quality!
I DO have to say that their products are VERY over priced.
I used to buy their products when I was younger because I had the help of Medi-​Cal.
Which I can also say that they are one of the few optometry places that still do accept Medi-​Cal.
But now that I no longer have insurance, I prefer buying my contacts online for nearly 1⁄3 — ¼ the price.
Overall, I highly recommend this place for all your exams!

LOVED Dr. Chinn, he was friendly and very thorough. I had a really late appointment (last one of the day) and he took all the time that was needed and didn’t rush me. I got a contact Rx for the first time in years but he let me put on the samples myself instead of requiring I go through the whole contact training stuff. He was awesome.
The receptionists are okay. They are upsellers to the extreme. They will ask you about a million times if you want products you don’t need, and they will recommend you buy the more expensive items. Even after I told them I didn’t like the expensive contacts — –they were too loose feeling on my eyes and very uncomfortable.
They also quoted me well over $ 100 for only a 30 supply of daily contacts. I did NOT buy them — I instead got a 90 supply of my same brand online for $ 52.95.
I’ll go to Dr. Chinn for my appointments, but I think I’ll avoid other purchases there.

Extremely over priced. Went in for a routine check and contact lens exam and was told I HAD to buy their contacts. Would have spent over $ 300 AFTER insurance without even ordering/​purchasing contacts. Went to Target, spent $ 40 after insurance and ordered contacts online. Swindlers.

Extremely friendly staff, easy to find location, and smooth process of getting a check up. Also, free history on San Diego via the doctor while getting my eyes checked. Thanks, team!

I’ve been to Dr. Chinn a few times over the last few months for various appointments, pick ups, and adjustments. Some things are great, but some things could be improved upon, so it’s a 3 star kind of place for me.
Pros:
— very friendly staff
— fairly easy to schedule an appointment, there are even Saturday hours offered
— parking isn’t *that* bad, unless you’re trying to beat out the brunch crowd who are next door at The Mission
Cons:
— I felt like I was being upsold on some services. Laser eye surgery was brought up, I said I wasn’t interested, it was still pushed for another few minutes.
— I felt rushed by the doctor. I asked a question about a problem with watery eyes and I got what seemed to be one of those answers that was just meant to get me out of the door.
— If you say you’re going to call me to follow up on contact lens that I’m having trouble with and **two months** go by before I finally just walk in, that’s a problem. Sure, I take part of the blame because I could have gone in sooner, but why didn’t they call like they said?
Bottom line: Dr Chinn’s office is in a convenient location and none of the cons were so bad to completely turn me off, so I will return… I just would love to see some more attentiveness.

My daughter and I recently switched to a new optometrist. We choose Dr. Chinn because a few of our friends recommended him. We are very happy we listened to them and switch. Dr. Chinn is very nice and funny. A big plus is he’s good with kids. My daughter thought he was funny and told me that she would like to have him as her optometrist. And I totally agreed with her. The office is nice. Located on a busy street in north park, parking is a little hard to find but being a good optometrist dr. Chinn is. It’s worth it. Also like to mention the two girls in the front desk are super awesome. Tiffany helped us out and I gotta say. She’s the bomb! If you’re looking for a good optometrist. I would recommend Dr. Chinn.

Dr. Chinn is very professional, friendly, and fast. The ladies up front are nice and extremely welcoming. I first came here last summer after moving into the neighborhood. My prior eye doctor was located in National City, and for some reason, the Dr. there that examined my eyes gave me a prescription that was a little off which caused me to have extreme headaches. Well I was hesitant to try this place, but Dr. Chinn and his staff got me in and out in about 30 minutes, and I didn’t have any problems with these glasses! I plan on coming here for my yearly exams. My daughter has an upcoming exam, and I have a feeling I wont be disappointed! Definitely recommend.

My girlfriend today was picking up her contacts, and my new insurance plan started yesterday so I’d thought I’d ask them a question about it.
Overall, the front desk were very helpful and answered all my questions. Turns out that they do accept my insurance, and everything turned out to be covered. They even let me squeeze an appointment with the doctor so I didn’t have to schedule an exam for a future date. Overall I got my eye exam, got a pair of contacts to try for a week to see if they’re comfortable, a starter kit with solution and lens holder. I ended up being there for only 30 minutes, and the doctor has quite a good sense of humor. I’m very pleased with the prompt attention I received, the thoroughness of the exam, price, and the answers to my questions.
The place is very clean too and looks well maintained. I believe I may have found my annual exam place in San Diego.
Their front end staff was very professional, and the communication delivered to the doctor was flawless. Previous places I have been in New York there was always some sort of miscommunication, with the insurance, what I wanted (contacts but written me down for contacts and glasses), and long wait times even with an appointment. Overall I’m very pleased.

I love Dr. Chinn. Not only is he a caring man, but he is a complete professional. His staff is always helpful. I brought in a pair of glasses and they worked hard to fit me with a new pair of frames, and only charged me $ 30 for the set. Tiffany is very talkative, but very competent and very kind! I can’t say enough about how good Dr. Chinn is.

I live in North Park and work downtown and finally decided that I needed to move my eye doctor from La Jolla to North Park. I had driven by Dr. Chinn’s office and thought it looked like a clean professional office; I had also checked them out on Unilocal!and was excited to see so many positive comments. So today when I needed my eyeglasses adjusted and wanted to make an appointment for an exam, I stopped here.
Oh my. I have never, in 40+ years of wearing eyeglasses, PAID to have them adjusted. Not once. Ever. To the best of my knowledge, it has always been an industry standard to provide adjustments as a community service. And yet the young women at the desk, even AFTER I told them I wanted to make an appointment with the doctor, wanted FIVE DOLLARS to adjust my specs.
I walked out. Won’t be going there for glasses adjustments, or anything else. Very disappointing!

Dr. Chinn is a very personable and knowledgeable guy. Flower and Tiffany are both also great and were incredibly patient with me in helping me choose a good-​looking pair of frames. They both also very adequately explained my insurance policy coverage. The frame selection was pretty good too. I no longer have to walk around squinting like an idiot just so I can see.

I really wished I still lived in San Diego to have this amazing doctor as my Optometrist. Flower and Tiffany are very professional and friendly people, and Stephen is a very knowledgeable doctor. I was in and out of there in less than 30 minutes and I was very happy with this place after just looking on Unilocal for a place to check out my eye infection. They had an available appointment an hour after I called. Keep up the good work!
