Steve and his staff did outstanding work leveling the subfloor and installing new engineered hardwood floors along with baseboard for my entire house including stairs. He displayed great attention to detail from the very beginning with his estimate to the end with the finishing work. He was very responsive, incredibly fair and addressed every question I had. I couldn’t be happier with the work that he did and would recommend him to anyone that needs flooring installed.

Best choice I have made in a contractor in a very long time. I needed new flooring all throughout a rental property and I needed to be able to coordinate timing to be able to minimize the transition between tenants. Steve responded to my initial calls right away (why is that so hard for most contractors??), he showed up on time to do a review and sent me an estimate in just a couple of days. The job required carpeting and hardwood floors. Steve provided an initial estimate and then also gave me additional information about a vinyl floor that looked and felt just like wood, but was more resilient to the beach weather and more durable… it also meant a considerably lower overall cost on my particular project. All these were great, but it was his response when he started the demo that really impressed me.
The prior tenants had caused an enormous amount of damage to the floors and walls that was not visible until the carpets came up. Steve and his team adapted their schedule and worked an extra three full days over the original estimate to replace sub-​flooring, baseboards, door trim and even portions of the wall board. They did great work, they were reasonable in the added costs and they stayed with the job until it was done. Being able to have a real contractor on sight rather than just some flooring guy, meant that I could address all the issues with a single contractor and get it done in the shortest time possible.
Steve and his team worked long hours and performed many different tasks to get the project completed. I couldn’t be happier with the results and I will recommend Steve to anyone that needs any kind of flooring work completed!

Steven did a fantastic job installing (engineered) hard wood floors in my house. I had called around to many people for estimates and information and not only was Steve extremely reasonable, he was very informative. He came over and gave me an estimate on how much flooring was needed. He removed all of the carpet and baseboards on our 2000sqft house. He installed the flooring himself and even painted and added beautiful new baseboards. Steve did the entire house himself because his help wasn’t available for the most part. The one time he did employ help was short lived as the guy wasn’t performing to Steve’s high expectations so he gave him the boot! That’s how much integrity Steve has. He even paid to have more wood shipped to me when he discovered that he had quoted the wood estimate a tad bit short. The work was impeccable. Our realtor came over to view the work after and was astonished. He said he had seen other flooring people who had started/​stopped the floor at each new room threshold instead of the way Steve does it which is to seamlessly transition from one room to the next. We could not be happier with our experience and will not hesitate to call Steve for our future flooring needs.

Steve did an excellent job. Our living room is completely transformed. Not only was he honest and highly professional, but he saved me $ 1000 dollars by helping me get a better deal on my laminate flooring (tip: don’t buy from Lowes). This is the second time I used Steve for my flooring work. A few years ago I used him for a small project. This time he did a big project requiring ripping out existing flooring, flat out surface, and install new hardwood and tile, for a large home. I am very satisfied with his work, his attitude, his reasonable price, and his quality of work.
Steve is very detailed oriented. Of most contractors I have used so far, I always found out a few things that I wish they had put more efforts into it. For Steve, I cannot find anything that I need him to come back to fix it. My wife is a very picky person, and she is very happy with the finish.
There are a lot of corners you can cut for flooring work. For example, you can not tell the quality of floor preparation once it is covered. Some contractors would not prepare the floor with much efforts, or not at all. Steve spent a lot of time sanding off the hire spot and filling the low spot. I am very impressed with his work ethics.
I would not hesitate to hire him again if I have more flooring work in the future.

Professional work from start to finish.
Steve did a great job installing our hardwood floors in North Park, San Diego. We have a craftsman style 100 year old home that had many challenges to laying the floor. The end result was perfect which was a feat considering he started with crooked walls, uneven floors and awkward layout.
From start to finish Steve was direct, honest, had a great attitude and had a high expectation for the quality of his work. You will definitely be satisfied.

Looking to get 500 sq ft of floor tile in a newly built unit, I queried Qualcomm’s 1000-​strong ‘remodeling’ discussion list. Steve was recommended by several Qualcommers so I put him on my «call» list.
Of the 10 tilers I called Steve was the only one to provide a written estimate for the job. He also handled all materials purchases (tile, cement, grout, underlayment.) And he suggested using a new underlayment material (Ditra by Schluter, a plastic roll-​down matrix that gets filled with cement) that saved both time and weight of materials.
Steve stayed in close contact throughout the job which took about a week. He smoothly handled a problem with the materials (several boxes of tile were too large by almost ¼″ and had to be replaced.)
The results: an excellent tile floor in our new unit, and a firm (Straughn Construction) that I will happily recommend to anyone.

Steve installed a hardwood floor in our house in June, 2012. I would have to say that he is the best contractor I have ever worked with. He called every day to give me an update on the project. His work quality was exceptional. I would give him the highest possible recommendation.

Absolutely, I’d recommend Steve! Over the last few years, he has installed bamboo floors in one area of our house after another and redid the molding and framing of doors and windows and put in a BEAUTIFUL full wall backsplash in our new kitchen. If we are pondering a home project and learn that it’s something Steve does, we are much more likely to put that project to the top of the list because I know the work will be done beautifully and I’ll have nothing to worry about. As a mom with kids and dogs, I always have to think about who will be here doing work. Steve is nice to have around and is very calm and reassuring when plans go awry. Trustworthy, meticulous work, fair pricing, dependable — you can’t go wrong.

I found Steve’s service on Kudzu. Before contacting Steve, we went to one of the major hardware stores to get an idea about what our flooring project would cost. A few things turned me off about my experience at the major hardware store. I had to pay a non-​refundable deposit just to get an estimate. And then the estimate had all of these extra charges that made my head spin. My gut reaction was: I better get another estimate. Thankfully, I contacted Straughn Construction, Inc. First off, he was very punctual and professional. We just had a good feeling about it right off the bat. He was very clear about the estimate, so I understood everything that would be on our invoice. Also, what we paid for his service was substantially lower that what the major hardware store would have charged. He provided great suggestions when we asked, but would leave decisions up to us. For example, he would let us know which style of baseboard may be a good match for our flooring, but would provide several other options to choose from. I always felt like this was my project and he was the expertise. About the work itself, he and his team did a fantastic job. They worked really fast, able to complete our floor in a day, with a follow up day to finish up minor work. We feel like we have a new house. Our floors are flawless. I highly recommend you consider him if you’re looking for a great flooring service.

Steve is one of the best in the business… period! I work with a lot of talented contractors in the business, but he is top tier. He is very honest and his rates are extremely competitive. I put contractors up there with car mechanics. It is hard to find a guy you can truly trust. But once you find «that guy», there’s no reason to go anywhere else because they give you the confidence that each job will be done right. Steve is «that guy». He was a professional from start to finish and completely transformed our kitchen with a new tiled back splash and reconfigured some of our cabinets to create a more open concept. He made it look so easy!
Steve also installed baseboards throughout our entire house. He was able to work around the existing built-​ins (closets, bookshelf, etc.) so the baseboards would flow seamlessly through every room. His efficiency and attention to detail was impressive.
You can tell he really enjoys what he does and yet even more important to him was that my wife and I were completely satisfied with the end result… we were!

When I began my search for wood flooring installers, I found one contractor on Unilocal.He had rave reviews, but unfortunately did not respond in a timely manner. I also looked on Angie’s list but unfortunately had a difficult time finding contractors who specialized in wood floors. I finally found Steve Straughn on

Steve returned my call right away and set up a time to come in to do a free estimate. He showed up on time, listened carefully to my wishlist, offered suggestions on ideas I was unsure about, and prior to leaving, expressed with sincerity his wish to do the work. I had such a good feeling from my first impression of Steve that I did not waste my time getting any more bids. I wanted Steve to do the work. After seeing his estimate, my husband and I decided the price was fair and we hired him.
He was punctual; he showed up at 8:00 a.m. and if he needed to pick up supplies first thing in the morning, he notified me the day before. Perhaps more impressive, though, was the fact that he cleaned up the site and was finished by 5:00 p.m.
Steve and his team installed 1800 sf of engineered hickory hardwood flooring, including stairs, and 200 sf of ceramic tile in our home. His team consisted of two apprentices for the wood floors, a seasoned tile mason and a drywaller. Drywall was an unexpected trade to incorporate. When Steve removed the carpet from the stairs, he saw that where the existing drywall met the subfloor (plywood), there were gaps that the carpet was able to mask, but a finished hardwood tread (crisp lines) would not. So he called in the drywaller to repair the holes. As a result, the entire stairwell needed to be repainted. It was a small added cost in relation to the overall project, so we decided to do it.
The stairs are a masterpiece. We went back and forth on whether or not to do the stairs in wood or leave them carpet since we have a baby on the way and we were worried about the slippery factor of wood. Now that we’ve been walking on them a for a couple months, we realize that the wood is not slippery. We are so glad we did the stairs in wood because we cannot imagine removing the carpet from the rest of the house but leaving only the stairs. They’ve become a stunning focal point at the entry to our home.
My husband and I contemplated doing the work ourselves. But it wasn’t until I witnessed Steve at work one day, installing baseboards, that we realized this was a job better left to the professionals. Steve is a true craftsman. The baseboards he removed had chamfered corners, so he could have just replaced with equal. But he gave me the option of using a curved corner joint which matched the curved wall corners above. It meant more labor for him as he had to sand the edges to be flush. We went with 5″ baseboards that turned out beautiful and are proportionate to our 9′ ceilings.
