History

Its attorneys are members of the California bar and are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The firm was founded in 1984 by experienced patent and trademark lawyers and is based in San Diego. It regularly represents a variety of local, national, and foreign companies, as well as a wide variety of local small and medium-sized high technology companies such as Fluid Components and Quantum Design. The firm has special expertise in filing and prosecuting patent and trademark applications in foreign countries, as well as foreign origin applications which it files in the U.S. The firm is an active member of a number of local, state, national and international bar associations and technical and IP specialty organizations.

Mr. Maxham, the founder of the San Diego patent law firm, The Maxham Firm has been practicing patent and trademark law for more than forty years. He earned a degree in electronic engineering from Tufts University, where he was a member of the national engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi. Mr. Maxham’s law degree is from Boston College Law School, where he was a member of the law review and the national legal honor society, Order of the Coif. He practiced for fifteen years in Boston before relocating to San Diego. He has prepared and prosecuted more than nine hundred U.S. patent applications and at least as many trademark applications, and has done opinion and licensing work in technologies of all types, including mechanical, computer, electronic and electro-mechanical, and plant patents. International trademarks and patent applications also number in the hundreds.
