Such a beautiful hotel and amazing service, which includes nightly turn down service.
Our room wasn’t ready when we got there so we went to the lounge to have an appetizer and drinks. When our room was ready they comped our entire bill for our drinks and appetizer. Room service for breakfast took less than 30 mins. I needed Tylenol and called down to see if they had a store that sold it and they said they would bring me some. No less than 5 mins later there was a knock on the door with complementary Tylenol. As checking out I stopped in the lounge to order a soda to go and when I took my wallet out to pay, they said it was on the house. I was really impressed with the service and will be back for sure.

I really enjoy my stay here when Im in San Diego. I have stayed at this hotel several times. The staff is great. The beds and rooms are really nice –has a historic energy. Great place to spend the night…

I had the worst service at the US Grant Hotel. I booked through the Visa Signature Hotels so we could get a certain package. Upon arrival I received none of the perks in the package because they said there was no availability. However when I look online there were that night. It was supposed to come with complimentary breakfast but they over charged me 3 times. I have tried to email/​call/​or make any kind of contact with this Hotel and I have received an impersonal email it $ 25 off when it clearly said $ 80. I was planning to stay here quite a bit because of this package, and it is the only one in San Diego, however I don’t know if I want to anymore since it is a huge hassle to deal with. After reading other reviews being over charged is a constant issue with them. So don’t mind the above Unilocal special about free breakfast. They will charge you anyways.

This place is great.
The staff treated us like royalty. The room was beautiful. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was luxurious. Walking distance to so many great restaurants.
Beyond their control: Gas Lamp district is bachelorette party central which adds to the street noise at night, Construction (Winter ’16) adds to the street noise during the daytime.

Love this place! I always enjoy my stay. I wish I would have stayed here this last weekend.

for the money, it was a very nice hotel. It is near everything and I would would certainly stay again! The rooms were comfortable. I had the upgraded king bedroom. Not sure what the difference was, but it was nice.

Despite being an older hotel, the rooms were very well decorated and seemed like it was more recently renovated, at least the room we were in. The breakdown:
Customer service was great — we were offered bottled water as we were waiting to check into our room. The gentlemen helping us was very nice. We were initially given a room on the lower floor with a pretty disappointing view. After speaking to the front desk about it, they gave us a room on one of the higher floors which had a bit of a better view. Valet parking was also pretty good, they brought the car fairly quickly. We also received an extended check-​out, which was fantastic. The con was that we had asked if there were any upgrades available, and were told that there weren’t any available, despite already being an SPG member.
Rooms — Very nicely decorated. The colors of the bedding, and furniture made the space look very clean and more modernized. Since it is a luxury hotel, the rooms were provided with luxury products including Elemis spa products. Con: Shower — even though it is a nice shower with glass doors, we really wanted a tub T_​T. Also, the carpets out in the halls could be cleaner.
There are a lot of chandeliers in the lobbies, which earned them some more points. Overall, this was a very good stay. We were pretty pleased with how the experience turned out, despite not being given an upgrade. However, we will be back again in upcoming trips so hopefully it’ll work out better next time!

Some really wonderful things about this hotel: the location is great, and it has a fun historic vibe. The staff are very friendly, and the hotel restaurant is excellent.
But: I don’t see how this place gets 5 stars (or is included in the group of hotels known as «The Luxury Collection»). Seems more like 3.5 or 4 stars. Certainly, I’ve stayed in multiple 4 star hotels that are significantly nicer in every way than this hotel. Beds are small and not very comfortable; Seating in room is limited; Televisions are old; Temperature is either hot or cold.
We came here for our 30^th anniversary; and while we had a very nice weekend, I think we would have enjoyed a half dozen 4 star hotels in the area more.

Once again, the Grant delivers, big time. Our 10^th floor room had a view (not necessary, but, YEA!) of downtown, and a nice layout. We spent a stay-​cation evening restaurant hopping (Oceanaire, Bice’s, and one other one I can’t remember the name of) and then ended up dancing til midnight to the live music in the lounge at the Grant. They sent a bottle of wine and dessert and fruit tray up to us… guess we looked like we were celebrating something. That was a first and the danishes were melt-​in-​your-​mouth delicious. Love the Elemis bath supplies. Grant, so classy.

This hotel is beautiful! There is a lot of history of this 1910 hotel and They have done an amazing job bringing it back to life. The décor is beautiful, and the staff was very friendly. We were set to arrive town early and it was no problem checking in early which I very much appreciated! Thank you for a great stay! We will definitely be back!

Absolutely beautiful, historic hotel! I have always wanted to stay at this hotel and was delighted to do so while attending a conference earlier this month in San Diego. The room was beautifully appointed and I loved the detail in the molding. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, the beds were comfortable, the shower was very nice and the hotel was situated in a convenient location. I will definitely be back!

My journey over to the west coast from NY started well, I hit Venice beach, Fresno, the giant redwoods, and streamlined it back down to San Diego. It was beautiful and the few extra bux for the mustang convertible set my good mood early.
Upon arriving at the hotel I was hoping that good times would keep rolling and Upon check in there was a much needed beverage dispenser and I could have drank the entire thing after the long drive.
Check-​in was a breeze and getting to the room I was telling my friend about the eerie stories linked to the hotel.
That was all cut short when the door opened and the room shined out. It was beautiful. Beautiful!
The décor, the bathroom, the giant mirror, woohoo.
The story about the place is that a woman haunts the halls. It was built by Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. And named after his father, but about a year before its grand opening, Fannie Chaffee Grant (the first wife of the construction worker responsible for much of the work on the hotel, died. When the hotel reached completion the man moved in with his next wife, allegedly scorning the first, and well… Hell hath no fury…
Apparitions of the woman have been mentioned such as items being moved and a figure disappearing in the hallways.
I assure you the only thing spooky about this place is what they charge for daily valet!
The valet guys were cool when I was there and sorta humored me when asking to hear about their experiences in the place.
It’s a cool back story and the history of elegance surely hasn’t died. It lives on unlike the men’s only dining… More history you’ll have to look up.
When I was there I tried calling the ghosts name a few times … I think she’s due.

Pros great location. The staff is very welcoming.
Cons, The first night we were there I woke up with numerous bites on my legs, I can only assume they were fleas. In room dinning has no flavor and the it seemed stale.
If you valet make sure you take everything out of your car.

Not so good start walking up to check in. But the guy quickly recovered and changed my mind!
Looking for hotels for me is so hard! Unilocal is so detailed in all hotels with the reviews and if I see a picture of a bug, it’s a no go. This hotel had some beautiful pictures and great reviews. It’s also in the heart of gaslamp so you have walking distance access to the town. Huge plus!
Another con when booking was there was no pool. However, reading the book in the room it states that since there is no pool we could use the pools at a couple hotels next door. That’s an awesome thing to know if staying here! Plus you get to explore another hotel!
So we arrived close to 3pm which is check in. The guy said our room wasn’t ready until 4pm-​5pm because the people staying in it requested late check out. I was upset because we weren’t notified of this and I have two little girls who were antsy. I asked if they had a bigger room and was told no, only smaller then our original room. Obviously we don’t want smaller. He told us to wait and walked away. When he came back he said they ended up having a room bigger come available that just got cleaned. It worked out perfect and we were very happy with the room.
The room was on the 7^th floor and was very large. The furniture inside was beautiful. The shower was huge and the lifted sinks were gorgeous. The beds were comfy and the room was clean! They brought us champagne and strawberries since we were celebrating my daughter’s bday and early anniversary. They also have bose speakers for your choice of entertainment on the tv. Dining table was super comfy.
Turn down service was awesome. We came back from dinner and they had removed extra pillows on bed, shut our blinds, emptied trash, placed a sheet on floor to wipe feet before bed, played low music, and placed a chocolate on each pillow. The sweet life!
I was beyond happy with our stay here and will a absolutely come back!

I had been planning a 1920s murder mystery weekend for myself and my parents since April. What better hotel to do this at than the the best historic hotel in SD (we are from orange county)?
I planned my event so far in advance because it all depended on the multiple locations working together. If you have never tried asking a hotel, a bar and a hat shop to coordinate let me tell you, it takes tremendous effort. The bar and the hat shop did wonderfully; went far and above what was asked. The US GRANT, however, was very nearly the undoing of my meticulous planning.
I had planned and paid for room service upon check in. It was Imperitive that my family get it, as it was a part of the clues the had to «investigate». I called the Wednesday prior to check in I called the hotel and knew there was something off. They couldn’t find my confirmation number, nor my receipt for room service. They eventually found it, assured me it would be delivered upon check in.
When my family arrived, they were so excited they extended my reservation due to the hotel’s awesomeness and never having been there. Font desk matched the room rate which was great. That was the only part that they did right.
I had paid a total of $ 159.04– call it $ 160– for room service– on top of the room rate-​only to hear from my parents that nothing had arrived. I call the hotel «oh, room service isn’t delivered till three pm». I had to scramble to rearrange plans, called parents to let them know they needed to get dressed to go out. Their service didn’t arrive until 530 pm-​dinner was at 545. They had to run to their first event (my mum has medical issues so speed isn’t her strong suit). They were told they could order for it tomorrow (Saturday). Thankfully, the dinner/​bar was accommodating, and the hat shop was phenomenal. The night ends and day two rolls around.
Saturday, they call for their room service at 436 (My mum timed all of this). They didn’t get their room service until six pm. It took an hour and a half to send up what should have been stored properly overnight. Why does it take an hour and half to get room service? I have never waited more than 20 minutes to get room service! My mother sent me pictures-​now, mind you this was for my mums bday. She hates whipped cream. I the order form for room service I stressed a CHOCOLATE CAKE with CHOCOLATE frosting. Even after everything else. When I got there Saturday I was beside myself to the point where I didn’t go into the hotel cause I would have ripped heads off. Is it SO HARD to follow WRITTEN instructions? Is it so hard to NOTATE CUSTOMER REQUESTS?
You are a SPG CATAGOREY 5 HOTEL. You are SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW THROUGH on what you TELL your patrons. I am so severely dissapoitned in this property. I called this morning and asked to speak to management, and was forwarded to voicemail. It’s 9 am on a Monday-​management isn’t in office? I contacted SPG and they are looking at it too. If the ViVa restaurant and the Goorin Bros hat shop had not been so fantastic, my three months of planning would have been all for naught. All because I depended on my clues being delivered by people who claimed they could do it. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Out of all the hotels I’ve stayed in, this is only one that felt like home. I booked a hotel stay for three nights using SPG points. I would recommend parking in the Park It On Market garage a few blocks away from the hotel if you don’t want to valet your car. The garage is $ 1 per hour with a $ 15 maximum per day.
This hotel is beautiful and felt like a museum because of all the paintings and sculptures. I noted when I was booking my hotel room online that we were celebrating my mom’s birthday but I wasn’t expecting anything. When we arrived in our room, there was a platter of fruits and tea with a happy birthday note from the hotel.
The beds were comfortable, the shower had a glass door and all the towels and linens were so soft! Every morning, we would grab a cup of coffee from the hotel lobby before walking or driving to breakfast. For my Platinum amenity, I chose the breakfast which came with a $ 14 credit per person for me and a guest. The breakfast at the Grant grill was delicious!

This hotel was built around 1880, and is grand.
The service on a par with any 5 star hotel. Actually, better.
I must mention Mr Mark Peak, the chief concierge. This gentleman is amazing. He is professional and an unbelievable people person. If your staying at this hotel you will never be disappointed.

We stayed there over the 4^th of July weekend. The building is just beautiful. The lobby is very chic and is designed very beautifully. It is very welcoming.
We valet our car and headed toward the guest services desk. Since we had got there earlier than the check-​in time, we had to leave our luggages at the hotel to have lunch and come back to get our room key. In front of our eyes, the girl who was helping us put our stuff on the floor and said, «I will have somebody come and take them to the luggage storage.» Ummm… Excuse me! I have some valuables in there that I don’t want people to have access to it by leaving it on the floor!!!
Anyhow, when we came back couple of hours later, thank God my luggage was not where we had left it. We finally got our room key and headed toward the room. We were told that the luggages gonna be brought to our room «shortly»… That shortly ended up to be 35 mins!!! Yes, I understand that they might have been busy, but these are the days that hotel managers should make sure that they are fully staffed…

I already don’t have high expectations for any type of hotel, but I had a comfortable stay at the US Grant. I stayed here with my boyfriend on a gift certificate for a 2 night stay with a $ 200 credit towards the Grant Grill. Awesome deal already. It was Memorial Day weekend but it wasn’t too busy in the hotel.
I had been doing my research all the way up until the days of my upcoming stay. So, I did know about the $$$ parking — $ 40 a day? Or was it more? Still ridiculous, so we opted for Über and Lyft rides to and from the hotel since we lived not too far from downtown.
The room we stayed in was smaller than I expected (probably because I had been hyping myself up on the pictures they showcased on their site), but it was more than enough for two people. The bed was so big and fluffy! And the shower was spacious. The hotel itself still has an old glamorous look to it but the rooms are updated and modern. It was quiet on the floor we stayed on and the hallways were a bit darker than I liked… hiding something? Not too much of a bother though. Since the Grant is in the middle of everything downtown, it can get a little loud outside the windows if you’re staying facing the street.
Love that it’s a short walk to Horton Plaza and to pretty much everything fun. We were able to walk to brunch, the mall, Seaport Village and then back to the hotel to pass out from the bottomless mimosas we had earlier.
Great stay, nothing to complain about. Wish I checked out more of the hotel though, like the art gallery they have. I will be writing a separate review for the Grant Grill.

This is the worst «5-​star» hotels I’ve stayed at, and here’s why.
(1). The hallway (at least on the floor we stayed at) was smelly, the whole time. AND at some spots you can visibly see stains on carpet at the hotel.
(2). There’s some gross blood stain on the curtain in the bathroom.
(3). One of the towels they gave us has stains also.
(4). Tiny fitness center with only 3 treadmill and two elliptical machines. To put it to perspective, it’s smaller than the gym of the hotel I stayed at in Minsk, Belarus.
(5). It’s loud if your room is facing 4^th ave, due to buses and cars and the building across the street that’s under construction.
I will never be back again.
