Total Vision Care Advanced Optometry

Dr. Johnson is very knowledgeable and didn’t rush through my exam results. The staff is accommodating and appointments are easily set-​up. The office is clean, as you would expect of an optometry office and they have a wide selection of frames.

Having lived in different parts of the United States this is the longest I been to the same eye doctor in years.
Doc Johnson is a good doctor and I really enjoy my visits (if it’s possible to enjoy a doctor visit.)
He takes the time to explain my options with contacts and glasses as my prescription changes almost every time. (The joys of getting old)
I read where others complain about the desk staff but I personally have never had a problem. Once in a while we have an issue where something on the insurance has been overlooked but never anything that couldn’t be rectified.
As far as being billed for additional services, I hope people understand you can say no if you want. This is a business, nothing is for free.
Except the coffee and soft drinks/​water while you wait.

I’ve been wearing glasses/​contacts since I was in 8^th grade and I’m now 45 years old. In all my life of going to eye doctor’s I’ve never had more of a worse experience. I have insurance and only came in for an exam. I did not purchase glasses or contacts on this day.
1. The gal doing my exam asked me if I wanted to have a scan of my eye (which I’ve never been asked before to do). I said, yes not knowing it was an additional $ 35. I don’t believe it is my responsibility to ask if it is an additional charge. She should have told me this when asking. I’m refusing to pay this as it was almost like a used car salesmen tactic looking back.
2. I was charged an additional $ 100 for a contact exam which in all my years has always been standard in the routine eye exam. I didn’t even get to leave with my prescription for his.
3. As stated I did NOT purchase contacts or glasses on this day. It was only a routine eye exam. When leaving the guy checking me out says «after insurance you owe us $ 145 for today.» I was totally shocked as I’ve never paid for anything but my $ 10 copay before.
With prices and add-on’s like this I’d swear we were in Beverly Hills at some reality TV eye vision specialist. This is the last place I’d ever go for eye care.

Dr. Greg Hayes is the very best! I get the best care and trust him 100%. The people there are super helpful and nice. They have a great selection of glasses too.

We have been with Total Vision Care for a few years now and the customer service has been phenomenal! All our daughters either receive care or eye wear and every-​time we’ve been there, we have been greeted with a smile and great personalities. The professionalism is amazing and very refreshing honestly. Sometimes things can get busy and I understand probable frustrations, however over the years… they have been nothing but Outstanding and I would refer them over any other Vision Care Center we’ve been to in San Diego.

The people at the front desk are very rude. They do not greet you or use manners. I was taken a back that they have no customer service skills. The appointment with Dr. Johnson was great, but a week later I was billed for work through my insurance THAT WAS NEVER DONE! Talk about illegal. I called the office and they basically called me a liar and I had the doctor call me and he apologized for billing for things that were not completed. I will not be coming back. It is a real shame because I liked Dr. Johnson. But the staff and the billing mishap made me very uncomfortable.

I have been a patient here for 5 years now. I am very pleased on how educated and helpful the staff is. All of the Doctors that i have seen here have been informative and patient with my family. The glasses selection is very large and has different choices, I had no problem finding a frame that fit me well. I will be returning next year for my annual exam!

The people at the front desk can use a class in customer service. They barely greet you, walk away when you walk up to the desk, without even acknowledging you and are disorganized. When I went to pick up papers, they couldn’t be found. Watching the two ladies go through piles of papers to find what I needed, did not make a good impression… and I walked away empty handed.
Granted, hours later I got a call that the papers were found, in fact, apparently they were on the desk the whole time… not buying that. They lack a good filing system.
With that said, patient care NEEDS TO SLOW DOWN. They rush you from station to station as if their lives depended on it. Dr. Johnson does his examinations quickly, it can leave you flustered and questioning the quality of the exam.
The section where you can pick out glasses does not have any reps to help you if you have questions. When I did find someone to sit down with me, another customer came in and no one greeted or helped her. In fact, she, the customer, interrupted my time with the representative to inquire when she would be done with me to help her… Rather then offering to find another person to help her, she gave her an estimated time.
Now the glasses… quality does NOT match the price.
If you can, price check and shop elsewhere with your script.
IF you are military, ALWAYS check out the military optometry center. Better quality, better price and a 2 year warranty.
PS-​Just reviewed my records and the eye doc put in his assessment that I had type II diabetes. Which I DO NOT HAVE. It also states that I have Macular Degeneration, I DO NOT HAVE THIS CONDITION either. Yet, according to the summary I was provided with all this awesome material about both diabetes and Macular Degeneration… including a video. WOW. Must check with my insurance company to see if there are any extra charges. Either way, it supports what was stated above. QUALITY OF CARE is in question.
Down to one star for obvious reasons.
Update: Spoke to the doctor and he apologized, apparently it was a computer glitch! The program they use diagnoses patients! They said the glitch is fixed when I expressed concern about other patients records being affected… apparently the issues started and ended with me… Think it is unlikely it happened this way… but moving on. I made my point very clear to him over the phone.
Still one star.

I have been a patient for many years and have always been very satisfied with the staff, doctors and their services.

Having been a patient here for many, many years and spent thousands of dollars on glasses at this business, I expected to be treated a little better today when I went in to get my glasses repaired. Granted I walked in but I was told I could do this if I needed my glasses repaired or adjusted. I checked in and sat for over an hour to be seen. People who came in after me were seen before me. It wasn’t until my son and I started to grow impatient that someone finally asked why we were there. Sorry but I need to find a new place from here on out.

My wife and I have been visiting Dr. Johnson and Dr. Plattner at Tierrasanta Vision Center for many years and always getting extra class service. Staff is very friendly and attentive. They are using supper equipment to check and monitor your eyes health. We would definitely recommend this place.

I got dust or something in my eye, and it stayed red and irritated for two weeks. Unhappy with my last optometrist, I got a recommendation for Tierrasanta Vision.
Like most denizens of the 21^st century, I went online to make an appointment. Hmm… ZocDoc screwed up and gave me an appointment with Dr. Hayes at an earlier time than he is scheduled to be in the office. I showed up and they were rightly puzzled to see me.
Fortunately, Dr. Hayes got in early and agreed to see me. He was very nice and explained what he was doing and why he was doing it as he examined my poor eye. I never felt rushed even though I know they fit me in, and when I didn’t have my insurance card with me, they just said to bring it in the next day. Wow.
I was really happy with my experience. Although I can’t speak to prescriptions or lenses just yet, I am due for an eye exam and I will got back to see them. Great staff and Dr. Hayes was just what I want in an eye doctor.

I had the unfortunate experience in dealing with Dr. Johnson twice while a patient here. On two occasions he withheld my prescription – when I asked for it and when it was in his hand in which he purposely would not let it go. What kind of doctor won’t give you your prescription? Someone else wrote about this doctor. This isn’t a one time thing. I won’t be coming back and I will be writing to my insurance company about my experience here.

Dr. Klein is amazing. I highly recommend Tierrasanta Vision Center.

Saturday hours, multiple doctors available, full office staff on hand. All these things make a great first impression. I would definitely recommend this place. Thorough exam, and all my questions and concerns were answered.
The location is perfect, right off the 52 and they have multiple designated parking spaces, as the lot there seems to be very crowded.

I have been coming here for the last two years and love the treatment and environment. From front fest to check in to the exam it’s self. Everyone is super friendly and attentive. I always feel welcome and feel that my eye health is being looked at by staff who are great in their field and who love what they do– which is unique.
I hope to continue with them as long as I can and would recommend them to anyone.

Surprised by their high ratings after my experience there. The doctors are fine, but the staff would keep me from ever returning there. Very inefficient.

I have been going to Tierrasanta Vision Center for years even though there are eye doctors closer to my new home. Dr. Johnson is a wonderful physician who takes his time to answer questions and explain treatment options.
This office also a very convenient location right off the freeway and a full service eyeglass selection as well onsite! Their staff is friendly, courteous and I never have any issues scheduling appointments.

I have been a patient for many years and just love Tierrasanta Vision Center. Appointments are always convenient, little waiting time, the front desk staff is always friendly. The doctors are always friendly and efficient. I had a perceived emergency a few years ago and it was handled so professionally with great care. Thank goodness there wasn’t a problem, but they made sure everything was 100% and kept rechecking. I can recommend this office to all.

My husband and I have been seeing Dr. Klein for many years. We have always gotten the best care possible. Their office is not that convenient to where we live but we feel that the care we get is worth the drive.

Dr Steve Klein has been my optometrist for over 10 years. He is truly exceptional: his knowledge is at the forefront of his field, his enthusiasm for his work is inspiring and his personal interest in me and my health is rarely seen in today’s world. I highly recommend Dr Klein and his staff at Tierrasanta Vision Center.

Loved this place! I been to a lot of eye doctors bc I’ve moved so much in my life and this place is the best. The ladies at the front desk are the sweetest. They offer stuff to drink, a little play area for kids, my doctor was young and knew what he was talking about. He told me stuff other doctors have never told me. He was very knowledgable. Definitely a place to go.

Eyesight is precious and our family has trusted Tierrasanta Vision Center for two decades of outstanding care. Dr. Plattner is our primary optometrist and she is awesome — she carefully explains procedures and is very thorough. We have occasionally had Dr. Klein and Dr. Johnson for unscheduled, urgent need appointments and have been very pleased with their care as well. The doctors keep on the cutting edge of technology and advancements, which is quite impressive for a local practice. We wholeheartedly recommend them!

I have been a patient of Dr. Steve Klein’s for almost 20 years, and have referred him to numerous friends. Steve and his team are AWESOME! They take such good care of you through the entire process, and they are totally on the cutting edge of optometry. The various technology used and the care provided gives me such a sense of confidence and trust that my eyesight is being properly watched over. They also have a wide selection of frames to choose from. They are great! :-)

The doctor was rushed and short with his questions, flipping between lenses so quickly, my son could barely guess before the doctor changed the instrument. He spent most of his time with two kids, leaving my oldest to be, for the most part, examined by an assistant. After I called him on his rushing the exam, he slowed down, but now I feel uncertain as to the accuracy of my son’s prescription. When administering dilation eye drops, they forego the analgesic drops; instead the doctor told my gasping son to «think happy thoughts.» (Perhaps my teen lucked out by seeing the assistant for most of her exam — her dilation wore off in an hour, whereas the drops administered by Dr. Johnson kept my younger two kids’ eyes dilated for — I’m not joking — TWO DAYS.)
We waited for 25 minutes to be assisted as we chose frames. I say assisted, but we were actually on our own until we blindly chose something and then got rung up. My kids’ pupil measurements were never taken, my son’s bifocal depth was hastily marked without looking at his eyes, and the guy treated us as if we were inconveniencing his day.
I took their prescription to another practice to get their glasses — at half the price that TVC wanted. When I asked TVC for a refund on our order (placed an hour before) it took three staff and finally another doctor to figure out how to issue my refund. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK.
