Best breakfast in Clairmont Mesa … White gravy on Hash browns with grilled onions a meal in itself. Always family friendly. Veterans a plenty. you can do your good deed and buy an ex military hero breakfast here or one still serving, this place is a magnet for military. Food way above average, love the breakfast choices, lots of great large plates. Family owned and operated… great people.

We went on a busy day, but the customer service was still on point. The food was great, good sized portions with nice home cooked flavor. Good experience, we will definitely be back!

Small little restaurant in a shopping center. I’ve been coming here my entire life and I’ve always loved it. The food is cheap and pretty good. The waiters/waitresses are always nice. It almost has a diner feel to it. It can get busy because a lot of people go here(because it’s so good) but it’s interesting because everyone seems to know each other. It’s a little community. This is in the same center as a Dennys and I’d recommend that you go here instead! You won’t be sorry.

My husband and I went there for the second time a few days ago. Not going back. The first time I had their fried scallops and they were good. Not gourmet good but family style good and the vegetables were fresh not canned or frozen. This time I had the spaghetti with«meat sauce». It could almost have passed for vegetarian fare. If there was a quarter cup of meat in the thing, I would have been surprised. The noodles were over done and the color of the watery sauce looked like something that would come out of a chef boy-ar-dee can. It seems that they have a new prep cook. It also seems that«their» recipes are not written down so there is no consistency. The waitress was good though and offered to bring me something else(which I refused because it was edible) and offered me a free dessert at the end of the meal. My husband had a hamburger both times and he was happy. The french fries are good. It’s too bad, they really have a nice menu. Lots of comfort foods on it.

This place is family owned and it’s amazing! Been coming here for years! Order the hash browns extra crispy and you won’t regret it. The French dip sandwich is my favorite.

Overall, this mom & pop shop is marginally better than your typical chain like Denny’s. It’s just ok, nothing to write home about like the Mission or Hash House or The Tractor Room. Surprised at how noticeable the sodium content is for a restaurant that isn’t a cheap chain like Denny’s. Food & price: «Mozzarella strips» — six stubby sticks, served with homemade marinara and ranch. The mozzarella sticks were ok, I can usually eat them by themselves but these definitely needed some sauce since it was notably salty. Marinara wasn’t as viscous as most other marinara, and I didn’t particularly care for it, sadly. One of the few instances where I preferred to use ranch. I love mozzarella sticks, but preferred the Costco mozzarella sticks over these. Machaca — ok, somewhat bland. Nothing to write home about, salsa gave it some flavor. Hash browns — I love hash browns and this was good, left me wishing they gave a bigger portion. Pancakes — ok. Slightly burned in some places. Biscuit & gravy — I also love biscuits and gravy, but this was also just ok. Also a bit salty. Cost seems on par with Denny’s, sampled enough food variety to pay $ 18. Service & décor: came in by myself after an elderly couple, but I got seated first strangely. Wasn’t too busy, since they were seated right next to me right after. Décor definitely looks mom & pop, seats are notably deep. Server was attentive and on point. Conclusion: Not sure if I would come back since there’s other places I’d like to try if I’m ever in this area again, but I don’t regret trying Troy’s.

I love and prefer going to inexpensive, low key, and non-touristy spots whenever I travel. If you want a «home-cooked-style-breakfast» and a feel of the local life, I highly recommend Troy’s for breakfast. Looking for pancakes on Unilocal, this was one of the few non-chain spots I found close to La Jolla that was serving pancakes on a Sunday morning. It appears to be a Greek-themed or owned diner. The one item on the menu that was Greek was the souvlaka and eggs on the breakfast menu and the kababs on the dinner menu. I ordered the«house specialty» corned beef and substituted the toast with pancakes. I was quite pleased with the quality and value of my order. I loved the corned beef hash and buttermilk pancakes. It’s some of the best I’ve ever tasted. I also enjoyed the mildly spicy house salsa as a condiment with breakfast. I felt really welcomed when we entered the restaurant by the warm host(manager or owner maybe) and also found our server to be efficient and friendly. I didn’t see an obvious tourist at the restaurant. It’s a bit out of the way, but between the one«trendier» breakfast option near La Jolla Shores and this one about 12 — 15 minutes inland from La Jolla including hopping on a freeway, I didn’t regret choosing this locals diner for breakfast. Go for a «bang for your buck» breakfast and to get a taste of local life.

Don’t judge a book by its cover! My fiancé brought me to Troy’s tonight because I wanted American diner food. They have daily specials for under $ 10 and it includes a soup or salad, entrée, and dessert! You can’t beat that price! I had the Thursday special of the Chicken Fried Steak with a baked potatoe and it was very good. My fiancé says the food is consistently good and the service is superb! Our waitress gave us quick and friendly service! I would definitely come back!

My 6 year old daughter and I went into Troy’s thinking it was a Greek restaurant. It was very reminiscent of Denny’s inside, even down to the diner smell. They were busy with almost all senior citizens, but we sat anyway. The menu had a couple of Greek options, but again — like Denny’s it had a diner menu and not Greek. Okay, no problem. The woman who seated us must have been the owner the other reviews spoke of. She was pleasant seating us but when I asked my daughter what she wanted to drink, the woman took a look at my child and told me that she would give us a minute to decide. We did not need time to decide, but she took off anyway. She did not come back. While we sat across from the register in a small booth, a man sitting at the diner bar was verbally abusing the waitress in front of him. I have spent over 20 years in the Industry, and this man appeared to be someone she had to put up with regularly, by her tired willingness to feign politeness. The man then stood up, heavy set, balding, wearing a button down that needed to be buttoned up — if you know what I mean — showing off a gaudy gold cross on a chain. He went behind the register and opened the till, while the waitress complained that she had been on shift since 4am and was hungry. He told her that her butt was already too big and she did not need to eat! As he came back from around the register, he caught my daughter looking at him in disbelief and he said, «It’s okay sweetheart, I can talk to her that way because she is my baby sister.» So this man, the waitress and the woman who seated us were all part of the family that owns this place. At this point I had seen enough and my daughter did not need to see a POS like that treating staff, let alone FAMILY, so poorly on the dining room floor. We still had not had a waitress come to our table so we got up and left. As we did, the owner threw me a questioning look but I am sure they are aware of why their customers get up and walk out, so I did not feel that I owed her an explanation. I DID explain to my daughter that we would not spend our money in a place that would give a dollar to that man.

Started off my day bright and early with breakfast at Troy’s. Like everyone has said, the crowd here is much older, but that just proves how good an early morning breakfast there can be. ;) I have always passed by the place but didn’t know it was a diner — always just assumed it was an all Greek restaurant due to the lettering of their sign outside. Gave their Spanish omelette a try and ordered hash browns and tortillas with it. The food was satisfying and comforting but nothing amazing or gourmet. Don’t come here if you’re expecting some hip brunch faire and bottomless mimosas. I love that they gave us a heaping bowl of salsa! We came here around 10AM and didn’t have a problem with a wait. We were seated right away and service was prompt. The place feels and looks just like your average IHOP or other chain breakfast place, but is family-owned and operated. Parking is plentiful in the shopping center lot. Simple, affordable place to eat.

My husband and I decided to try out Troy’s for the first since it was the closest breakfast restaurant to where we were at the time. I’m glad we did! I had the House Specialty and my husband had the Troy’s Special Breakfast. I ordered sunny side eggs with mine and he ordered sunny side over medium. I think most restaurants don’t know how to prepare eggs over medium. If you know one, let me know. The food was good and the service impeccable. Our waitress was quick and came over to check on us a few times. We’ll give Troy’s a try for lunch and dinner another time. P. S. We waited 5 – 10 minutes around 9 am on a Sunday for a table. When we left around 10 am, the line was out the door. There was plenty of space at the counter of you’re really hungry and don’t want to wait for a booth.

Troy’s Family Restaurant is not only a family-friendly place but it is also family-owned and operated, by the same Greek family, since the day it opened in 1973. I have been here many times, most recently a few weeks ago, when I ordered a simple breakfast of souvlaki and eggs. This is one of my favorite dishes. Another favorite is the souvlaki dinner, which comes with a generous portion of souvlaki along with rice and a small Greek salad. This is better than it sounds, and the rice(which I normally don’t like) is actually tasty. In case you don’t know, souvlaki is is a popular Greek food consisting of meat grilled on a skewer. It’s usually served in a pita sandwich with garnishes and sauces(but not here). In Troy’s case, it comes with eggs and toast/pancakes for breakfast, or on the dinner plate. The meat is typically pork, which I believe is the basis for Troy’s very tasty souvlaki. The meat is well seasoned and usually cooked just right. Troy’s offers mexican food, great and cheap breakfasts, coffee shop seafood, and a daily special, Many of the patrons have been coming here for decades. I believe that many live nearby in this part of north Clairemont. The menu is big, and everything is made on the premises. However, there is a warning at the bottom of the menu in large, all-capital letters that states: «ABSOLUTELYNOSUBSTITUTIONS! WERESERVETHERIGHTTOREFUSESERVICE!» Perhaps they have had problems with this in the past? I rank this place 3 stars. It is definitely A-OK, but nothing gourmet. If you don’t mind dining with geriatrics and(sometimes noisy) families, give Troy’s a try. You won’t go away hungry!

Came here for lunch and can just feel the nostalgia hit you as soon as you walk in the door. This is the local ‘greasy spoon’ — putting it on par with Denny’s and iHOP. So if you don’t like either of those places — you will not like Troys. Very friendly staff, and the food is what you expect at a greasy spoon. Prices are extremely reasonable and if you have a family — definitely the breakfast spot. I should have ordered the breakfast since it is served all day. The Soulvaki was too tough for my tastes. Really have to saw through it…

Such a great place! Family owner diner with a wide range of food choices and none will disappoint. The lunch and dinner dinner specials and totally worth your money and come with a side and desert for roughly $ 10 ish.

Troy’s is a comfortable diner where most of the clientele are regulars, the wait staff know your name and your coffee cup never runs dry. My Grandparents were regulars here, and used to bring the family for special occasions. Recently, my Grandpa passed away and my Grandma just hasn’t been up for going out. We were taking care of some business in the area, and decided to drop by for lunch. Per the usual, we were greeted in a friendly manner, coffee was poured on the spot and we ordered our favorites. Normally, I’m a heart-health conscious type of gal, but every once in a while you just have to go big. I ordered the Reuben(subbing sourdough for rye) and the potato salad. Grandma had an omlette. Both were great! I just love how they crisp up the bread here. Not low on calories but heavenly. It was a nice treat for two under $ 20 and it got Grandma’s spirits up! I’m going to definitely bring her back again soon.
