I enjoy attending University of Jiu Jitsu’s Women’s Class every Sunday. There are many women, from different levels, that comes from different Brazilian jiu jitsu schools that attends the class. It is a great place to feel comfortable with someone your own sex and size. Professor Kiri is a wonderful instructor. She is kind, patient, and an overall great person. She goes around to ensure that each student is understanding the technique that was just taught, and if anyone has any questions.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit the University numerous times while visiting and am 110% satisfied every time! Saulo, Xande and staff are welcoming and of course the instruction/​training is excellent! When you visit San Diego it’s MUST to check out!

I love this place! Trained here for over a year. You aren’t going to get a better instructor and training partners.

The Ribeiro brothers are simply THE BEST BJJ Practitioners on the planet. Professor Saulo is an amazing instructor of not just the techniques but also on the conceptual level which helps students of all levels grow. A great school for anyone serious about learning the art & science of Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu. Give it a try!!!

Top three JJ school in SD. The most accomplished instructor in SD, probably along with Galvao. Some of the best students in SD. This is not a cheap gym, but if you want to train from a world champion, you gotta pay for it. The only other thing i’ll note is in the two times I went here, it is a very formal gym. So make sure you are adhering to all the universal JJ mat rules.
Also, they have a separate mat for white belts, so if you are a colored belt, you don’t ever have to touch a white belt (at least the two times I went) and trust me, that is awesome.

I attended a Friday class and they had yoga with bumping music. Afterwards, I trained with guys that were both technical and cool.

One of the nicest BJJ gyms I have ever been to. I visited back in 2010 when Xande was here regularly and in the current day of 2012, Xande is no longer here as he moved to LA.
Saulo was very welcoming and respectful and has an open door policy regardless of affiliation. The day I visited had many other big name guys visiting as Royler, Rafael Lovato and Justin Rader were visiting along with pro MMA fighters like Akihiro Gono and Hatsu Hioki. THis gym is a major attraction for those in the community of the art as top notch training takes place here. Saulo and Xande both offered excellent and high level instruction here. There are 2 mat areas and in between them is a rope hanging from the ceiling if you want to work on your grip and do rope climbs. There is also a huge flat screen TV on the wall constantly playing fights or grappling matches. Nice perk there.
The students there range from many levels of experience ranging from beginners to world class jiujitsu fighters. Everyone is respectful with good etiquette and the training environment is very positive.

I’ve been training Jiu Jitsu since 2005, and began training at the University of Jiu Jitsu in November of 2010. What first attracted me to the University was the chance to train with Saulo and Xande Ribeiro. The Ribeiro brothers are true legends of the art, and training with them has proven to be a great experience. Jake Mapes also teaches classes there and has been a great mentor. There’s no shortage of knowledge amongst the teaching staff at UNIJJ.
In addition to the top quality teaching the school also has an awesome atmosphere. The instructors and students are all very friendly and always make you feel welcome. If you’re new to Jiu Jitsu you don’t have to worry about feeling intimidated here. I’m unable to train now because of an injury but I still go to classes just stay a part of the art and keep in touch with all of my friends at the school.

The Best Place To Train Jiu Jitsu in San Diego! The Teachers are Great and the Training Partners are on top of their game! If your Looking for a great Jiu Jitsu School and looking to up your Game then look No Further… Saulo and Xande Ribeiro are on Top of their Game…

They just started a beginner class/​/​self defense. Very good instruction from World Class professionals.

I only trained here for about a few months-​I lost my job and could no longer afford to pay the tuition. I came into this not knowing ANYTHING about BJJ. First of all, the Ribeiro brothers are top notch-they’re as good as you’re going to get instructors wise. The Jiu Jitsu players here are high level, upper echelon competitors. It made me feel really out of place but at the same time, I learned so much in such a short amount of time. Once I get my finances back in order, I will make it a priority to get back in here-​even if I have to eat ramen noodles and spam everyday. San Diego-​LOOK NO FURTHER-​if you want to learn from best, this is the school for you.
You do have the occassional tough guy MMA wannabees in here-​I guess that’s anywhere you go but it’s not as bad here as the other places I’ve seen.
Oh, and another plus-​everynow and then you’ll see UFC guys coming in here to train.

When I’m visiting San Diego, I always make it a point to train with Saulo. He is one of the best BJJ Professors I have met. If you’re in the area and you want to learn BJJ, this is the place!

First disclaimer-​I train BJJ in a different academy and this review is not about the BJJ training at one versus the other. (Though I do have their book and I like it, very thorough)
Secondl disclaimer-​This review is for my experiences with Alvaro Romano and the private Ginastica Natural privates I took with him through the Uni of JJ.
Alvaro is awesome. He is friendly, on time and communicates with you clearly. You can tell his life is devoted to this and then also the teaching of it.
The amount of effort you will put forth, your sense of movement and other basic skills to improving your jiu jitsu will increase! He has such a sharp eye you won’t have to worry if you are doing it right, he will get you there.
Though I’ve only taken two lessons he still remembers me and always encourages me to get better at BJJ.
If you are looking for a way to augment your JJ, I would tell you to take a Ginastica Natural class with Alvaro.
