Volare

This restaurant reminded me of back home of new jersey, this is REAL Italian food, I had the tortellini valore it was AMAZING! My friends all said their food was amazing as well I loved It! (Restaurant interior definitely needs a modern update tho)

We had been looking forward to trying this nostalgic Italian restaurant. We were very disappointed in the entire experience. The host? Never talked to us, just motioned. The service was slow and impersonal. Finally the food. Red sauce tasted canned, meatball was like a hunk of unseasoned hamburger, garlic bread was half burnt, half raw, and the salad was bland. The atmosphere would have been quaint if the food was decent. Was right out of a bad Dean Martin movie.

I noticed that there is only 4 – 5 star review. I went there and it was dark, dusty, and the salad the lettuce was soggy and limp. The pasta was not well done, and the service was slow. Sorry to all of those people who thing this is the best thing to happen since slice white bread. I could say it could have been an off night with the staff and chef, but why would I get that on the night I went here (?) I am still trying to find that great Italian restaurant. Since the Taste of Italy in Hillcrest closed down, it has been hard. I did try to see if this is good, but for me not so good. I just wanted to vent. This restaurant won’t be contacting me to comment or see if they can rectified this.

Fettuccini shrimp Alfredo it’s so so delicious! Very authentic taste to the food. Loved the cheese bread, garlic bread, and broccoli. The prices are very cheap and the portions are very large. The pizza is also phenomenal!
The service was a bit slow we were a table of 8. There are only a handful of waiters due to how small the place is but nonetheless the food is absolutely worth it. There is usually a line to get in on the weekend. You can smell the aroma from the outside. Will definitely be coming back to explore the menu some more.

I can’t figure out why this place isn’t more crowded. We’ve been there twice and can always get seated right away. Maybe it’s because it’s not the best area but it’s so worth it! I had the tortellini volare and my husband had the ravioli. Both were very yummy. Add a Salad, their garlic bread, a glass of chianti and a cannoli– all for $ 30. You can’t go wrong!

Had dinner here Friday night before a Gulls game. Small spot no reservations, it was packed but we were seated and had ordered with 20 minutes. Four of us and a toddler enjoyed a solid antipasto salad, the two 8″ pizzas were pronounced good, my lasagna was solid, I didn’t add red pepper flakes which would have probably taken it to good as our toddler was eating all of our dishes and I didn’t want to potentially have a pepper issue prior to the game (He normally loves heat so I was likely just being too cautious). The one thumbs down was for the eggplant, our fellow diner said it was blah, so ¾ dishes solid to good, and the price is likely impossible to beat. And the carafe of house chianti, amazing for $ 12.50. Friendly service from the staff. Check this place out, if looking for low key Italian fare.

My husband and I went for dinner and ordered the baked lasagna and ravioli, the works pizza, house chianti, tiramisu and a cannoli. The food was absolutely delicious. We will be back soon without a doubt.

This place n is absolutely great! Authentic, great service and priced exceptionally well.

Inexpensive hole-​in-​the-​wall mom-​and-​pop Italian. Don’t order fancy things, just go for the basics. Garlic bread flows and the house Chianti is surprisingly delicious. If you’re looking for elegant atmosphere or trying to impress a date, go somewhere else. If you want to stuff yourself with hot delicious pizza-​pasta-​cheesy goodness, come here.

Get the cheesy bread. Get the pizza. Get the spaghetti and meatball. And make sure you bring an extra stomach! Hah, as soon as you walk in, you can tell this place is an awesome, family restaurant. Tables of families laughing, talking, and sharing pizza. I ordered the spaghetti because I am a five year old and love spaghetti with meat sauce and meatballs. I could barely finish my plate– and I’m eating for two! My friend and her two little girls barely made a dent in their pizza, not because of the taste, but because of the size. Affordable and delicious, two of my favorite characteristics in a restaurant.

Food was very good, had the chicken parmigiana, my girlfriend had the bistecca, we shared the volare pizza. All delicious, but I give three stars for the fly problem. Gross.

We were at a restaurant that had an hour waiting list and we decided not to wait. I remembered that Volare was around the block and I always wanted to try it out. It’s not fancy but comfortable, You can dress very casual. The prices are low and the portions are generous. We have enough leftovers for another meal. The food was a little bland for my liking but I still enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and I noticed a lot of people ordered take-​out and they turned over tables pretty fast. I’d go back

for New Yorkers missing a hot chicken parm hero, even a meatball or eggplant parm, look no further than volares. yes their dinners of said items is just as amazing and I thank you know who every time we leave volares because they truly are the closest to east coast, tri state, NYC Italian in San Diego. their sauce is something else and they do sell it, but also their cutlets is prepared and cooked perfectly with gooey melted moozarel on a proper extra toasted italian bread. whether i have it to stay or to go in butcher paper, its home from 3000 miles away.
one thing they should add to their menu which we do order once in awhile,…and depending on who i order it from will say «we don’t make that»… but after a few «we’ve ordered it many times before». its a chicken cutlet sandwich with lettuce tomato and italian dressing. it’s a tri state italian staple of a fried chicken cutlet and volares has the best… not too thin or thick, great seasoning and breading, lettuce and tomato with their bread lightly toasted with a side of oil and vinegar, MA-​Rone. their oil and vinegar is balsamic base but id prefer a traditional italian dressing. regardless just a killer east coast sandwich.

Husband felt like Italian– so I Unilocaled the closest place to us. I’ve driven by Volare many times and am glad it was so close to us when we got hungry! Food is amazing and very inexpensive– during lunch I spent $ 30 for three people (including $ 5 tip)…
Yes, the food took a little while, and maybe the service wasn’t as «friendly” — but I dig that. Service standards now are just ridiculous. I’m actually annoyed when someone is overly happy and sweet. It’s fake. I used to be a server and called it my «acting job». I’m hungry– I’m there to eat. Feed me.
We ordered penne, ravioli, and manicotti. The sauce is good. Everything tastes home made. I will be back to eat more!

Been to Italy 12 times this is the first time I left a restrant and almost cried. Every bite was as if I was back sitting in Rome… Love my first time and will not be last… Thankyou, really thankyou… to the family and chiefs of this place… Little Italy restrants will never come close to the happiness you have brought me in one meal… Really felt like I was dinning in the streets of Rome.

I visited Volare for the second time last weekend, I had visited Volare once before about 5 years ago and remember generous portions for great prices I remember having the spaghetti and meat ball. This time around I decided to go with something a little different.
I’ll start off by describing Volare– It’s definitely a hole in the wall with a few tables but big enough for a family dinner. We walked in and saw a few opened tables and waited for a few minutes. A waiter came over to us after a few minutes and seated us.
We sat down and they were definitely busy, I will say not the fastest service but there were only two servers who were running around helping other customers so I understand.
We got some waters and bread once our server came (the bread kept coming we were apparently hungry than we thought!). I also had a glass of their house chianti which was nice and under $ 5! I took a look at the menu which has a lot of different options to offer. I had seen another Unilocaler post a picture of the raviolis a la Volare which was really just calling my name. I decided to order the cheese ravioli a la volare which entails (white sauce, Italian ham, peas and tomatoes) it was delicious and definitely hit the spot. The portion was also generous at least 10 good size raviolis.
My boyfriend ordered the lasagna and meat raviolis. I had a bite of his and the lasagna was tastier than the meat raviolis but overall the cheese raviolis a la volare were my favorite.
Like others have mentioned don’t expect a fancy dining experience nor the fastest customer service. Do expect a good filling meal for a very fair price while dining at this mom and pop place.

A revisit to my favorite «hole in the wall» Italian restaurant yielded no surprises nor any disappointments.
Volare is still and hopefully will remain the best little kept secret in the Loma Portal area.

I like Volare. The food is good and it’s affordable. But don’t expect fine dining or the best service — this four stars are strictly on the good food and their prices.
The establishment is a bit of dark area with a teeny parking lot, not too far away is an adult entertainment club and right next to the restaurant is a bait and tackle shop which I’m not sure is still in business. When you step into the restaurant it’s like you back in the 80s, the place itself could use a little redecorating.
But the food is good especially for the price! I’ve had the penne alfredo with chicken. I liked the sauce and the right sized portion. I’ve also had the eggplant lasagna which I found to be delicious — all that cheese and sauce with pasta and eggplant layered together mmmm. Boyfriend always gets the shrimp and pesto pizza — also good, but I’m not the biggest fan of pesto and shrimp, I usually just eat the crust. HAHA. There’s quite a selection of foods — pizzas, pastas and also appetizers. Prices vary between $ 8-​$ 20 for the larger pizzas.
Service is hit or miss sometimes it takes forever while other times wait isn’t bad. Don’t expect fine dining here — just good Italian food at a good price.

Welp folks, I like to call myself a chameleon of taste level. From ambiance to flavor, I can roll with the punches at any price tag.
I’ve been passing by this solitary historical building in Point Loma for many moons now, usually to and from my Homegoods ventures, and I was always wondering what the hype is after seeing so many people coming and going for their lunch hour.
Sure enough, after a fun day in the sun paddle boarding off base, our starving little tummies decided to try this place out… and I’ll tell ya… FIVE DOLLAH MAKE YA HOLLAH!!!
Yummy flavors, super cheap, and to the chase! Yum yum!
Less than $ 20 for two people! Two sodas, chicken Parmesan, bread, salad and pizza!
