Waka Kickball & Social Sports

I joined a kickball league for the first time last season and have had a blast! It’s fun to get out there and have some fun and get some exercise as an adult. The league is well-​run and everyone I’ve met has been amazing. I’d highly recommend it to anyone (girls included). The bar games are a blast, and it’s a great way to meet new people!

Having played in both the WAKA Kickball league and their competitors, Vavi, I prefer the WAKA league because WAKA is excellent at an «All Around Experience.» Meaning their leagues are well organized, each team varies in competitiveness (some competitive, others just down right fun!) they have creative costume themes for each game, the people I have found to be welcoming and inclusive and their after game parties are just as organized and crazy as the games. The Vavi league is just as organized, but they do not have costume themes, and I would say the players come together for the game, but then each go their separate way afterwords. Vavi has not established the camaraderie like WAKA has, and it has made all the difference for me!

Let’s get real for a second. Who doesn’t want to play a game you played during recess in elementary school with the benefit of being an adult and enjoying adult beverages whilst you «play»?? For real. It’s that simple. I have to say I love our team RBnV and we all like to hang out even outside of kickball. I think it really comes down to this… it’s a great way to meet new people if you don’t know anyone, it’s a great way to become better friends with ones you have, if you already know everyone it takes you back to college time fun.

Look, it’s pretty simple. You get to smash a big red ball with your foot. That’s awesome. While you’re doing that, you can enjoy a few adult beverages during the game. Yes, during the game. The needle on the awesome scale just went up. We can have a brew or two while we play kickball! Even if you don’t drink, it’s totally fine and literally anyone can fit in and have a great time. Each week there is a theme and even if your team isn’t very competitive on the field, you can make up for it by getting team spirit points. Basically, it’s a huge party every week with a kickball game included. The people who are in charge of the league are terrific and very welcoming and dedicated to providing a fun experience. I know this first hand because I started as a regular player and now I am a captain of a team and help referee games on a regular basis. I encourage you to join if you seek good times and bring some friends. There is always room!

I moved to San Diego 5 months ago and wasn’t worried about how I was going to meet new people, because I knew San Diego had WAKA. I played for several years in Austin and met a number of awesome people who I consider some of my closest friends today. I also met my husband on an opposing team while playing shortstop :)
This is my second season with WAKA San Diego and I’ve already met so many great people through this league. There’s lots of fun themes to dress up for at the games and entertaining bar games to partake in afterwards.
Kickball really is the perfect recreational outlet for young professionals in my opinion. In the midst of dealing with the stresses of adult life, it’s always great to know that no matter what, you’re guaranteed a night out each week to run around outdoors and act like a kid. I joined WAKA shortly after graduating from college, ya know, during that weird phase where you’re not exactly sure how to meet other young adults besides going out to a loud bar. I’ve been playing ever since then, and plan to continue doing so here in San Diego, and so should you!

Joined over a year ago after moving to San diego from northern CA. I joined to meet new people and make friends. I tried Vavi first and hated it. I was put on a very cliquey team that was not open to new people nor were the teams at the after game bar. Coming to waka it was very welcoming and all teams socialized and played bar games at the bar. There was a good balance between the competitive teams and the social teams.
Needless to say its been over a year now and I met my boyfriend, best friends, went on my first sea cruise with Waka, and always have something fun to do because of Waka.

Played for a few seasons and it is pretty cool. Pretty are cool and bars are cool.
The only reason I stopped playing, was due to the several cliques that existed within the league, so it kinda felt like middle school all over again. It was also pretty competitive, which is not my style for a social group. Other than that, its pretty cool. Give it a try.

I’ve been playng kickball through WAKA for over 3 years now. Loving every minute of it. The people who play and work for WAKA are genuine articles. My best friends are those I’ve met through this league. Plenty of parties throughout the season along with team get– togethers year round. Thanks WAKA for making my life happy and complete!!!

WAKA is one of the best ways for young adults to meet people in San Diego! It’s a co-​ed KICKBALL league. That’s right, Kickball. Just like you played in 3^rd grade with the big red rubber ball.
There’s 3 seasons per year, and it’s played on Thursday nights. Then we all (100+ friends) go to the Skybox bar in Clairemont for $ 8 pitchers, Karaōke, Flip cup tournaments, and beer pong. The bar is super chill and very welcoming to kickballers. They give 20% discount on your entire bill, no matter what you drink/​eat!
