XCom Global

Don’t pay any attention to their «unlimited internet» promise. I paid $ 15.00/day to take one of their units to Barcelona. I’m in San Diego. They are in San Diego. The unit worked for a few days then stopped. We contacted their Customer Service and they promptly replied; with a list of stupid suggestions that didn’t do anything.
I took one look at the upload and download speeds and saw that we had been bandwidth throttled by whomever their partner is in Spain. When I pointed out the obvious to them they admitted it and said they would have it corrected in 12 to 24 hours (BTW, that’s an entire day), this was after 2 days of no service.
Long story short they came back and said they couldn’t do anything;we had simply used too much bandwidth. Hmmm, doesn’t «unlimited internet» mean «unlimited»? We were simply working ²⁴⁄₇ and needed constant internet.
So I complained and they PROMISED me they would make it right.
How? They charged me an additional $ 59 for expedited shipping (again we are both in San Diego and they had 2 days to get it to me) and then refunded me $ 59 for the days the unit did not work. Isn’t that a coincidence.
The unit worked marginally well when it worked but they are obviously crooked as hell. Now they want me to «Read the Fine Print». Hey, XCom, READ THIS. YOU SUCK. We could have lost our jobs because of not having ²⁴⁄₇ internet. What really ticks me off is how they almost immediately get back to you with some sort of diversion or another then they bang my credit card AGAIN so they can refund it.
I am disputing the entire charge and will fight them until the devil goes ice skating. I’d find another provider; I’m sure there are others. XCom is on my X list.

I got married on a naval base, and was warned far to close to the wedding that jammers on passing subs/​ships often knock out the wifi. The day before the wedding, to late to overnight ship from any of the very few daily rental mobile hotspot companies, I found Xcom in San Diego (where I got married) and was able to pick it up in person. I rented a hotspot for $ 15/​day (2 day minimum) plus a spare battery for $ 1/​day, so much cheaper than buying a hotspot when I only needed it for a day. The device was self explanatory, user friendly, and the employee we picked it up from was very friendly and walked us through everything (I had someone else ship the device back for me and forgot to grab the business card, but I believe her name was Angelica). Left feeling like the company was a life saver, and it worked flawlessly for me. Used it to project a slideshow of the WedPics app, so guests could post photos during the event to live stream to the projector.

A customer of mine told me about Xcom Global. I took their advice and used Xcom Global when traveling to Winnipeg Canada to visit family. The service was great. I would recommend that you bring a back up battery pack to plug the device into when traveling as the battery that comes with the device didn’t last very long. I couldn’t imagine traveling out of the country without a device like this. You can connect your phone, laptop, etc up to it. If you don’t want to have a big cell phone bill when you return home from an international trip Xcom Global is great. They have great customer service too. UPDATE — — This second time renting the unit for BC Canada it is also working great. The speed is a little over 12 MB download and a little over 1 MB upload which is pretty good as there is really no lag when on the internet. The battery this time is better than last time but I rented the device but i still recommend a backup battery to plug into in case you are out and about and not near an outlet. In your iphone settings make sure to go into the cellular settings and shut off the data roaming because i just did a test and noticed that even when i am connected to the Xcom wifi unit if i dont have data roaming shut off my data roaming usage goes up on my phone in the data roaming meter.

I was planning a trip to Ireland and was looking for a way to use my smart phone.
I checked with my cell phone provider and it was a no go. I didn’t want to change my Sim card. I really just wanted to use the Internet, my apps, and maps. I searched online and found XCom Global. It sounded good, but I wasn’t sure. I checked Unilocal and the reviews were hit and miss. With limited options I did some research and I called the company. A live person answered the phone and answered all my questions. She even gave me a discount code to use online to rent MiFi.
The rental form online is a breeze and I got everything set up. I was told it would arrive one day before I left. I was leaving on a Wednesday and it showed up the Friday before. It came with a return FedEx label. I received email updates like when they shipped it and when it was delivered. Awesome!
I loved the prepaid return label, my only concern was it has to be given to a FedEx Ground agent for a return and can’t be dropped off in a box. The unit must be returned within twenty four hours of your last day. I live in a small town and we don’t have a FedEx office. The closest is 40 miles away. I made it work on the drop off.
Once I arrived in Ireland and got to my hotel I turned it on, connecting was a breeze. I spent five days in Ireland and I never was without Internet from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher to Blarney Castle this thing rocked. We used Snapchat, Facebook, Unilocal,Twitter, Instagram, Internet, email, and Google Maps and never had a problem. I uploaded and downloaded tons of data with no limits. I had a reception problem in a concrete or brick building, but no one had service so it was just the building.
I also got a spare battery. This was the only issue I had. One battery would last four hours consistently and the other only lasted thirty minutes. I had a couple spare charges for phones that I used to recharge the battery so it worked out.
MiFi is small and very portable. This device does give off quite a bit of heat when in use.
I loved that it came with an adapter to connect to European power to charge the batteries.
If you are traveling outside the US and need Internet access you need XCom Global. Yes it is a little pricey, but the other options are also. I actually thought it was a really good deal considering how much I used it and how easy it was to use.

Just used it in Japan for a week, Overall worked well. Worked about 90% of the time and when had an issue emailed customer support which responded back quickly. Had to reset the hot spot. Well worth it.

Why you should NOT rent a mobile hotspot from XCom Global:
1. the unlimited data is in fact very limited. This wasn’t a big deal in the past but today’s internet uses lots more data. As a result, it is very easy to have your service suspended without warning. It would be easy for XCom to send an email letting the user know but they don’t do anything until the user contacts them.
2. the highest speed is 3G and plenty of service is only 2G. In other words, X Com is renting the equivalent of iPhone 4’s.
3. in a recent three week trip to Central Europe the device worked about 10 percent of the time. I probably could have upped the usability percentage had I spent even more time horsing around with contacting customer service, re-​setting the device etc but I didn’t have time to continually fool around with this device, particularly since hotel WiFi’s in Europe have improved so much over the past few years.
I spent $ 329 for the device to work and, most of the time, it didn’t.
In summary, save your money and try an alternate solution. Rest assured, I will do so on my next overseas trip.

I used XCom Global on my 8 day Italy trip to Venice, Florence and Rome. Overall it was a great experience. We were a group of 6 that all were able to connect to the internet at the same time. It helped us with directions, finding restaurants, or just checking in with family while we were out all day long. My only issues were sometimes we would have to turn off the device and turn it back on because it would just randomly stop working. Also I paid for an additional battery but it was defective and only held charge for about 20mins.

I took a trip to europe for 3 weeks, thinking that I needed a hotspot device. WRONG (its way cheaper if you get a sim card in Europe, OR just pay for the international plan by your carrier)
1. They sent me a defective battery which didnt hold a charge. Therefore, it only lasted 10 minutes if i was lucky.
2. They disconnected my service because of the fair usage policy of 250mb a day, exceed that and your service was suspended. I lost a few days of service there.
3. I had to have my external battery plugged into the hot spot itself for it to even work. Even then the hotspot would get too hot and it’ll stop working.
4. The charge part of their hotspot ended up coming loose because it was connected to my external battery all the time. and they made me PAY FOR IT!
I probably had 2 – 3 days of use out of the 18 days i paid for. I really dont recommend this company to anyone. Their customer service was awful, and they didnt even consider giving me a refund for all the inconviences i had to endure during my whole trip.

I recently decided to use XCom global for a trip to Germany and Croatia at the end of June 2015. The first day it worked great but not so good after that. After the first day we were unable to connect for the next two days. I emailed customer support the first day we couldn’t connect and they responded quickly that they were looking into it. If it wasn’t for their customer support I would have given them one star. Like some other reviews I found out that their unlimited data is not unlimited.
They state on their FAQ page:
Q: Is there any limit to how much data I can receive?
A: The data that you receive is unlimited, but the rate at which you use the data must stay within the International Fair Usage Policy. This simply means that you cannot stream video or use excessively large amounts of data for more than short periods at a time. All telecom companies that offer unlimited Internet access still require you to follow this policy.
We did not stream any videos or constantly back up anything to a cloud. We did post some photos on FB.
When they got back to us they said the local service provider shut us down because we used 2GB. So this seems to contradict their unlimited usage policy. Two days later we did get the connection established again but then got shut down for using 800MB.
All in all the service was a complete waste of money. The uptime for a 10 day trip was approximately 4 days. Their policy on usage is somewhat misleading and monitoring «large amounts of data over a short period» of time is difficult to quantify outside of video streaming and cloud backups.
If you just want to do the occasional email and check a webpage it may be ok. But anything other than that, don’t count on it.

I was a little hesitant to use this service since I had a terrible experience with another provider in 2013. That said, my travel to Scandinavia (2 countries) was seamless and the service worked excellent. I opted for the external battery charger, however, consider purchasing one on Amazon if you plan to use in the US to also charge your iPhone, iPad, etc on the go. Also, I took advantage of a Groupon deal which helped lower the cost.
A recommendation to Xcom: you provided 2 SIMs — one for each country of travel, however, I wasn’t sure which SIM to use for each country. Some easy trial and error resolved this, however, you may want to label the SIMs or identify them in the package.

I used this company twice. Once in Mexico (the service was ok) and once in France (terrible experience)
The device locked itself after a couple of standard usage. It took me 2 days to sort this out. Too much time for hassle for a week long trip… Just go with a local company, at least you’ll get customer service when you need it.
btw…they promised me a refund which I never got.

XCom Global
I just got done with a trip though four countries in Europe and used XCom mifi for my data serivices while I was out of US. I was a very satisfied customer; not because the modum worked perfectly, which it did not, but because XCom provided technical support second to none to make it work at all times.
I’ll briefly elaborage. For reasons unknow on two seperate occasions after watching a You Tube movie I could not access data through my modum. without getting into the specifics, I was able to calll technical support at any hour and they provided great service in both identifying the issue (was with the data provider) and fixing the issue within quick order
I am sold 100% on their product and service and will use them for international travel again so long as the cell phone providers continue to offer international data that is cost prohibitive.

I wanted to gie kudos to the team especially the IT support. Even though I received a defective hotspot device 2 days prior my departure to Rome, after notifying them, they sent the device to my hotel in Rome at the time of my check in. Talk about great timing. Again, thanks a lot guys. Especially to Olivia

I was hesitant to order this mobile wifi for international travel because the reviews were mixed. But I didn’t want to deal with local SIM cards, esp in India as the process takes 2 days.
So I went ahead and ordered online which was a breeze. They sent FedEx one day before my travel (cost is $ 30 including return shipment). I ordered an extra battery since most reviewers pointed out the battery lasts 4 – 5 hours ($ 10). I was a bit nervous about them sending it on time so I sent them an email a couple of days confirming delivery. They delivered it right after that.
For 2 countries it was flat rate $ 14.95 per day (India and Turkey). I received 2 wifi devices, one for each country. They’re tiny and fits on the palm of your hand. Included is charger and instructions. (you can use any micro USB charger).
As for performance– well I was very impressed. It worked everywhere in Delhi, India as well as our drive to Agra, India 3 hours away. I would even say connection speed and coverage was better than my Sprint 3G coverage here in the US! (In case you didn’t already know the wifi devices use 3G signals from local cellular companies) In Turkey it worked just as well. We even had coverage in the subway both in Delhi and Istanbul. We were never lost (yay Google Maps), we were in constant communication with local businesses, we got to ride Über. basically everything we can do at home.
Battery was just as mentioned not that great (5 hours with us). We did have a travel charger with us plus extra battery so it was never an issue.
I think an advantage over local SIM card is the ability to use WiFi calling, where you use your US number like you were in the US! Of course you don’t have a local number but you can use Skype for that like we did. Also there is no limit to data! No need to buy more minutes/​data with local SIM card. Of course the advantage over using your local cellular provider as roaming is pretty obvious– it can get really really expensive!
Oh and if you’re traveling with someone you always know how far you are from each other because of the wifi signal LOL. Maybe an advantage so you won’t be separated.
Anyways– I highly recommend this product. I know I’ll be using it again.

I highly recommend this product! I travel frequently and have been very pleased with Xcomm global. I have used this service in a few different EU countries and it’s been a life-​saver. I would much rather rent this device for a flat fee as opposed to guessing how much Verizon or another cell provider with charge when I get home.
Besides, you can use it constantly and don’t get charged extra. It’s very easy to use and it can support more than one one, too. (The only time I found the service to be a bit slow was when I was in a rural area on the border of Italy and Slovenia… however, I understand that it’s usual in that area to have slow wifi service.)
If you are a heavy phone /​wifi user (and who isn’t these days), Xcomm offers peace of mind when traveling and I will certainly consider this company for my trip.

DO NOT RELY ON XCOM!!!
I ordered the mifi device with overnight shipping last Wednesday for a work trip to Mexico leaving the following Monday. The package was never delivered and they are blaming Fedex. Its now Sunday afternoon and nobody from XCOM has reached out to me to tell me that the device will not be delivered on time, until I reached out to them. They could have atleast had the courtesy of allowing me to make other arrangements. Regardless of who their shipping carrier is, XCOM should still be tracking their shipments and notifying customers if anything happens. XCOM really needs to take full responsibility and not finger point at others. After all, my payment was made out to XCOM, not Fedex. I’m expecting (at the very least) a prompt credit back for the rental and overnight shipping, but let’s see how that goes…

I took a chance on XCom Global even with the iffy Unilocal reviews because I was going to Paris and didn’t want to rely on hotel and café wifi access or switching out my SIM card. I am really glad that I used XCom Global because it really helped us out with maps, checking our email and whatsapping friends all over the world.
You order online, they send you a package with the hotspot, charger, converter and instructions. The unit is already charged and is small enough to put in your purse or pocket.
Put your cellphone on airplane mode when you take off. After I landed in Paris, I turned on the hotspot, and it showed the local mobile company Orange (which I think is the biggest carrier in France) with 3G. I was able to check email and surf.
TIP: Only turn it on when you need it to conserve battery because it only lasts for 4 hours. If you know you’re going to be out all day, I suggest to bring an external battery so you can charge the hotspot when it gets down to 1 bar.
XCom Global requests that you send it back the day after you get home so make sure you have the FedEx receipt with tracking number.
I’m glad that I used XCom Global instead of searching for free wifi whilst travelling and will not hesitate to use them again. If you have any questions or issues their customer service is awesome. Totally recommend!

I used Xcom Global for my recent trip to Europe. I didn’t want to struggle with no data on my phone. Out of the 3 countries I visited The Nederlands was the only one where I got 3G speeds the whole time. I Czech Republic I did not have a signal and according to them they were upgrading their system (I did get a credit). In Germany the service was inconsistent. In Berlin I got 3G and 2G speeds. Sometimes I had to rely on wifi from restaurants to stay connected. For some reason I was not able to connect my laptop while I was using the signal, i had to disconnect my iphone and then connect.
Battery life of the device is ridiculous it only last about 4 hours.
This was the first time I tried XCOM and it will be my last. I think I will be better off buying a SIM when I get there. I will be able to get 4G and battery life will last more than 4 hours on my phone.
Tech Support responds very promptly but when you are on vacation I can’t just waste my time emailing the techs so they can resolve my issues.

I used a XCom Global MiFi a few years back on a trip to Italy and my experience was very good. So this year on a trip to Germany/​Italy/​Switzerland and France I got a MiFi again from XCom Global. Well I have to say the experience was rather poor. Most of the time I could only get a 2G signal and that was worthless for even retrieving emails, let alone web searches for hotels and restaurants. In Germany the only carrier they seemed to support was O2-​DE, while my mobile phone picked up great signal strength from other carriers (phone only not data). In France the situation was similar, but just slightly better, however still unusable.
I used to recommend XCom Global but can’t anymore.

First off, I don’t like the fact that the device is delivered on the day before it’s needed. I live in an apartment building in New York City and packages are not left on my doorstep if I’m unable to meet the delivery guy. I had to have it shipped to a building with a doorman that will accept it just to know I’d get it before my trip.
I used the device in Santiago, Dominican Republic. It worked fine, but it was going at 2G speed, even with at least 3 towers in range. We were 6 – 8 people at times, but the website boasts connecting «up to 10 devices.» I understand that I was in a 3^rd world country, but I think it’s safe to assume that companies are intentionally vague in their service descriptions in hopes of more business; had I known what I was in store for I would have searched for other means. (Not to mention that Unilocal seems to be selective with the reviews that you don’t have to find through a camouflaged link.)

What this statement meant (for me, at least) is that data was capped at 2GB. Once that 2GB was up, service was «limited» and I was no longer able to connect to the internet. That problem can be fixed by calling the company and requesting more data (which takes a few hours to re-​activate), but I didn’t have access to a phone. I made the mistake of thinking that I could depend on this product for my connection to the world. I had to go out and find a business with free wifi just to make an internet call to xcom global.
I also had trouble recharging the battery when it lost its charge. If it was completely dead, it took time (anywhere from a few minutes to overnight) to start charging again. This was annoying as well as inconvenient.
I give a 2 star review solely because it does work (though far from perfect) and is providing service in a limited market. I, however, was greatly displeased and disappointed.
Oh, also, the product only works within a 10 – 15 foot radius.
