8tracks is a handcrafted internet radio network — the «social» alternative to Pandora. People who know and love music upload 8 or more tracks to curate an online mixtape, streamed by listeners like radio. Listeners pick mixes by genre, mood, artist or DJ, with variety and subtlety unmatched by algorithmic-​based competitors.

History

Established in 2008.

Over the last year, 8tracks has grown to more than 5m unique visitors/​month — larger than Slacker, Live365, Rdio, MOG, the Hype Machine and Turntable​.fm. Ad revenues have exceeded direct costs since Sep 2010. 8tracks hired its first employees in Aug 2011 and raised its first institutional round in Oct 2011.

Business Owner

David Porter is the CEO and founder of 8tracks. Until 2006, he helped lead Live365, the pioneer of «social» internet radio, achieving profitability in 2005. David wrote the plan for what’s now 8tracks during business school at Berkeley, informed in large part by the DJ scene in London of the late 1990s. His favorite band remains New Order.
