Active Sports Clubs is a great organization dedicated to ensuring their members are successful with their fitness programs as well as working with community organizations. We manage over 100 fitness centers across the nation including Jewish Community Centers. Partnering with a non-​profit says a lot about the trust and integrity we have as a Company. I think this speaks volumes.

Active is also dedicated to ensuring it does what it can for the environment by using biodegradable and natural cleaning sanitizing products and reducing energy costs through efficient lighting with low wattage and solar thermal water heaters for our pools and laundry facilities. The equipment here is absolute garbage. I used the same machines over ten years ago as a teen at the Bay Club. It’s a convenient location, though, and it basically does the trick.

I was a member of Active Sports club many years ago when it was still Club One. I’ve always liked this gym because it’s tons cleaner than 24 hr fitness and not as crowded. Plus it was really close to work so I was able to squeeze in a work out during the lunch hour or before I started my day.
I started working again, part time in the financial district and just rejoined a month ago. It’s no longer Club One due to a legal issue but has been bought back by the original owner who is running it under the new name, Active Sports Club.
Reasons I love Active Sports Club:
Clean
Never crowded
Amenities (they have shampoo, conditioner, body wash, endless towels, mouthwash, q-​tips, hair dryers etc)
Machines are great
Good classes
Service is great!

Other than the price, Active Sports is great! I’m glad to be back and happy that I can squeeze in a quick lunchtime workout. They also validate for parking which is a huge plus in my book!

New machines, great amenities, classes are good. Only complaint is the staff. Called for information about membership and the woman was rude and impatient. Was put on hold and then her answer to my question about the membership trial was «I don’t know» then when I asked another question she said «Do you work nearby? Just come now and we’ll take care of it» and when I explained that «now» wasn’t a super great time for me she responded with a sigh and «Look just come in and bring your friends and we’ll take care of it» which was no help at all. Though the gym itself was nice I’m hoping I won’t have to interact with the impatient staff!

Since I was in the city today I decided to stop by the Embarcadero Club to get my workout.
First off, it is located in the 2 Embarcadero Center, and you need to take the escalator to the second floor for the entrance. A little bit confusing at first. Anyway, it seems like there isn’t much staff in this club since it is friggin SMALL. Omygoodness, I felt so claustrophobic wherever I walk.
There are 3 floors, but it might as well be 1 since the layout is so weird. One floor has all the cycle machines and then there are windy stairs that lead up to the locker rooms, then the lowest floor has all the weight machines and the treadmills. It was completely empty. There were probably 2 guys in the weight room, which can be a positive thing since I have an opportunity to use the equipment without waiting. But everything felt a little dirty. I had to wipe down the handrail to the treadmill twice and the 20lb dumbbells were a little dusty. Since it is much smaller there aren’t that variety. Going to different Club Ones make me realize that I am so lucky to work right next to the Oakland Club One which is probably the largest and the cleanest gym. If you are willing to make the commute, you will not be disappointed. Sorry Embarcadero, I am not feeling your layout!

More and more broken lockers in the men’s locker room. More old rusted cardio machines. Everything seems to be going downhill and at least three locations have been sold off. Something does not seem right.

Pro: The locker room facilities are amazing here — super roomy, huge clean showers (barefoot no worries), separate toilets, and an area with mirrors and blow dryers and basic feminine products for you to get ready in. Also tall lockers with hangars for those of us coming before work with our work clothes.
Cons: It is, as other people have said, very claustrophobic, but even that wouldn’t bother me as they have a good collection of treadmills and bikes and weights. For me the biggest downside was that there is a very small selection of group workout classes — if you want to go in the morning and make it to work by 9 am, you can choose either this performance max class that’s a series (costs extra from the membership) and involves rowing, or spinning. I don’t practice either so this is a dealbreaker for me.
Also, they have some mats /​medicine balls there for you to do ab work on your own, but really nowhere to lay it down given the size and architecture of the place. This, again though is not as big a deal for me as the lack of classes.
Overall — very nice facility, new machines, great locker rooms, perfect for the commuting professional, very good customer service — just not a perfect fit for me.

Great club, and usually plenty of aerobics machines. The front desk staff is super nice, and have to give a shout-​out to awesome trainer Cole Nagy, who taught me that the key to my bad computer posture is not necessarily in my back, but in my hips.
I do wish they’d turn up the water pressure on the downstairs fountain, but otherwise, love this location.

I’m a member of 24 Hour Fitness and have been to the their club a block away when in SF, but I actually prefer this Club One. The machines are a brand I’ve never seen but interesting to use. The club is small and intimate. I have always gone between 10 am and no later than 2pm. Sometimes I have been the only one in the club. There has never been more than a total of 4 people. But I have walked past at 7pm and it’s packed. I would not advice going during traditional peak times, it would be a pain because of the smaller size. It would be claustrophobic instead of intimate.

Make sure you don’t give them your debit card number, they are unable to stick with the authorized transactions stated in the contract. My accounts has incurred unauthorized transactions for monthly dues at odd intervals. Link you account to your credit card and monitor your statements. Calling them for resolution is slow.

After posting my initial review a few days ago, I got a very friendly email from Club One management explaining the shower situation and promising that it would be resovled soon. Sure enough, I came in this morning to find great new shower heads installed. Thumbs up!

I got 14 day pass here from a friend. I was member of the wonderful Bay Club SF until 2009 when my finances became low. This Club One is quite ok not agreeing w the reviews.
Its very clean and supplied and I was able to do what I like to do in this place with a few machines missing for me. Locker is adequate and card system is the same as Bay Club. I did read there was a recent breakin in mens lockers and I think that is happening in the bay area fitness places.
Its a very good place is Club One

Okay I am docking at least two stars because of the COLD showers! Can you guys figure out a way to get the water just a TAD warmer than LUKEWARM in the showers? A LUKEWARM to COLD shower will definitely piss this athlete off after a workout.
There are definitely signs that Club One is facing the obstacles of the economy:
* Towels are still the same to me as before. They claimed back in January that they’re using new towels that are more plush, but I certainly don’t noticed the difference! They’re still the same old towels to me.
* No trainers on Sundays.
* Cut back on housekeeping staff
You will be back to a 4 star when you fix the shower problem!!!

Club One isn’t necessarily a bad gym, but this is a BAD location/​branch for sure. Located in the heart of the Embarcadero center, it’s super convenient for people to go to after work, but it’s definitely not ideal. Sure, Club One has numerous locations across San Francisco, but I can drop a plethora of names of other gyms that are better than this location.
First of all this place is divided into 3 floors: the main floor being the front desk and locker rooms, bottom for weights, and top for cardio. That sounds pretty nice right? WRONG. These floors are smaller than a junior high school gym. Size is one thing, but compound that with no ventilation, and you got an angry customer. Sure I love a good workout, but I don’t want to be walking around people, bumping into them, and then being barely able to breathe.
Now for the locker rooms, god jesus lord almighty. The lockers are super long but narrow as hell. I couldn’t even put my backpack or shoes in there. I had to play locker Tetris just to get everything in. The showers were a little ghetto. To me, it seemed like a scene straight out of prison. Old ass showers with a rusty tile floor.
If I had the choice, I would not come back. There are better gyms around the city and this isn’t one of them.

Reading other reviews, the majority of the low ratings is due to the size of this gym. We’re in the fidi, come on, everything is cramped here. This place is more of a «get in, get out» type of gym. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles other club ones may have, but it works for me especially since its so convenient.
I usually go during my lunch hour so I really don’t have time to take advantage of anything else, other than their classes, equipment and showers. Best classes are TKB, Pilates & Club Power.
The staff is so friendly especially Bobby who always greets me by name whenever I come in (and remembers if I haven’t been there in a while). Now that’s personalized service.
PS. After 4pm, parking is free with validation for up to 4hrs!

I’ve been using the Club One Embarcadero facility as my primarily gym this last year. Recently they cancelled my membership without telling me. I showed up to the gym one day and they said I was no longer a member! Apparently since I got my membership through my company there was some corporate policy that I had abide by which is to use the gym at my work 51% of the time. Too bad for me my company’s gym is in east bay and my business unit is located in downtown San Francisco. Anyways they wanted to raise my rate by $ 50/​month. Sadly this is my last week at Club One. I just don’t like the way they handled that. No warning or anything!
Things I will miss about Club One Embarcadero are really one two things:
1) Jim’s MWF 6:45AM spin classes
2) Rick the front desk guy who always greeted me with a smile when he checked me in at 6:30AM

I majored in Psychology, Statistics, and Self Torture in my undergrad years. Finished top of my class in the self-​torture department. I even got to give a speech and they gave me a special little trophy and made me an honorary doctor of Self Hate. God, I miss the good old days.
In order to keep the dream alive, I like to do things like take my aggression out on myself in little ways. Like compulsively setting the scale at 5 lbs so I think I’m fatter than I am, buying cookies and cakes to stare at in the cabinets but never eat, and apply for jobs I will never get but will be laughed out of interviews for. Additionally, I like to push myself to the point of tears in the course of hours-​long workout sessions in which I mentally pit myself against the people around me, goading myself on and more or less working myself into a heap of jangled nerves, pouring sweat and tears, and a hot mess with an ass you can bounce a quarter off of.
Needless to say, I come here from time to time when I need to switch it up from Yerba Buena or Citigroup Center. I like the weight area better than Yerba Buena’s and the three-​story layout is kind of cool. The bathrooms/​changing rooms could use some updating, however.
If you’re looking for a quiet place to ride a stationary bike and watch CNN (BO-​RING), the upstairs bike and eliptical hole-​in-​the-​wall is perfect after 12:30. If you’re look for a real ass kicking, hit up Friday kickboxing at lunch time. Sergio, the militaristic dictator (in a good way) who runs this show should be hired as a foreign operative specializing in torture by «step-kick-jab!stick-to-the-music!!!». This one’s a lot more challenging than the one at Citigroup but still manages to look easy. Stalkers: you can find me there. And please do. Because one look at my sweaty, smelly ass and my bright red face and You’ll be over me before you can say «remember to breathe».
