I wish all dentists were as friendly, transparent, and helpful as Dr. Temlock! I went for a consultation on two potential implants, and he gave me a wealth of information to help me decide what was best for me. He never came close to pressuring me into a decision, but was happy to offer a recommendation when I asked (and gave tons of reasoning to justify his recommendation).
For me, the biggest downside of getting two implants was the expense. My current insurance was about to switch, and I was dreading comparing the cost of the procedure with my current insurance vs. my future insurance. Dr. Temlock and his awesome staff navigated my confusing situation perfectly, and found that I would save a huge chunk of change by having the procedure done sooner rather than later (they even printed out the two estimates so I could compare side by side). Unfortunately, Dr. Temlock was booked through the end of the month, when my newer, more expensive insurance would kick in. Rather than saying «sorry» and sending me on, he offered to stay late and do the procedure right then, even though it was already past 5pm. The procedure was great and painless and went off without a hitch.
Tldr: Dr. Temlock is a friendly, no-​pressure guy who goes above and beyond to give you a great dental experience.

Look no further for a real pro periodontist. I found Dr. Temlock on my own after spending much time going through a list of network providers for my well-​known dental plan. So far, Dr. Temlock is treating me for receding gums. Besides having a genuinely caring personality as a DMD, he performs his surgery as a professor, patiently and confidently explaining each step in the process. He is very thorough and has called me the day after surgery to check up on me. His dental assistant and office staff are also very professional and polite. His SF office appears to be state of the art designed and equipped. I am a very particular person having experience with medical and dental practitioners around the world. In my experience, Dr. Temlock is clearly a world-​class DMD!

Let me start by saying, I am NOT a good patient. I don’t like having dental work done and was extremely anxious about my procedure. I went in to see Dr. Temlock because I needed a skin graft over the gums of one of my teeth that was starting to have so much regression the root was showing.
First, he laid out three options: 1. using skin from the roof of my mouth, 2. using skin from a cadaver’s mouth (no way), or 3. using stem cells. In my case, stem cells alone weren’t an option because my gum regression was too big. Alec suggested I use skin from my own mouth, but he noted that if I used stem cells in addition, the healing process would be much faster and less painful. I took his advice and did both. My insurance fully covered the graft and we paid out-​of-​pocket for the stem cells – some of the best money I have ever spent.
I felt nothing during the surgery. After, I had already had a roof guard made to protect the roof of my mouth. I put it in as soon as the anesthesia wore off. I took the prescribed pain meds right away, though I opted to skip intense pain killers for a prescription strength Tylenol. I followed Dr. Temlock’s instructions exactly. Day 2, I still felt no pain. When the dental office called in, I said I wanted to stop taking the pain meds, and they suggested I keep taking them to prevent inflammation of my gums, so I did. Day 3, 4, and 5… I waited for the pain. Literally, I had NO PAIN. When I went back for a follow-​up, Dr. Hemlock attributed this to the stem cells and the fast healing – a week in, my graft was already generating new gum tissue, along with the stem cells.
Alec is my hero! His procedure and the after-​effects caused no pain. He was available by phone day or night if I had any questions or concerns. I am happy to return to him again if needed, and would give him the highest recommendation. If you have a similar procedure – get the stem cells in addition – I know it made the difference for me! I know of patients who had similar treatments and had a much longer recovery time and much more pain – the stem cells worked miracles along with Dr. Temlock’s amazing surgical skills!

I came to Dr. Temlock seeking a second opinion after consultations with multiple other periodontists over the past few years. My primary dentist had recommended I consider a gum graft as an elective operation. He originally referred me to his in-​house periodontist, but I never got a good feeling from her, she never laid out any options for me and I never quite felt comfortable with what she wanted to do.
After changing dentists, my new dentist recommended I consider the same procedure and referred me to Dr. Temlock. I was a bit skittish after my last experience so I did a bit of due diligence beforehand, looking at the same site another Unilocal reviewer mentioned (
). I was pleasantly surprised to see so many resources available online, not to mention an impressive list of credentials. Another Unilocaler called out his modern office and website and I would have to agree. Most dentist offices make me feel like I’m back in grade school or should have brought my No 2 pencil to fill out their forms, but SF Periodontics and Implant Dentistry was a welcome change to the 21^st century of how medicine should be conducted. Their office is stunning.
Dr. Temlock was super personable from the moment I walked in the door, I didn’t have to wait long, he got to know me first before and didn’t treat me like a number at a dentist factory. He laid out options for the various methods we could take and ultimately decided on what was best for me, my long-​term health and even my pocketbook. He didn’t try to ‘up-​sell’ me the way I’ve felt at other dentist offices.
The procedure went flawlessly, he was very thorough and accessible in follow up and everything has been great ever since. I highly recommend Dr. Temlock to anyone looking for a modern, thoughtful and professional periodontist.

Let me preface this review with the following statement: I am terrified of dentists and anything having to do with my teeth. I have to desire to have them fixed, but since a traumatic experience as a child, I am never comfortable.
I needed to address my receding gum line, particularly for two lower teeth and I mustered the courage to ask around and started meeting with periodontists. When I met with Dr. Temlock, he was very knowledgeable and during the consultation, he explained everything he was going to do in detail, even answering my ridiculous questions. I felt more comfortable with the procedure and even boosted my security by saying that my case was an ideal one, so it would be quick work. Excellent tableside manners, efficient, and skillful. Thank you, because I am so much happier now that I have addressed my gum line! If anything arises, I wouldn’t hesitate to return to Dr. Temlock. Strongly recommended.

I was referred to Dr. Temlock from a co-​worker while I was seeking a second opinion about a fractured tooth — it was really hard to figure out who to trust so I went with her suggestion. The pain would spike up at various times, so I was hoping surgery wasn’t the only option and the other periodontist I saw didn’t talk much about options or seem to care– his focus was with scheduling my surgery date. I didn’t appreciate feeling like I was there to take a number with everyone else.
I really appreciate his site (
) — it gave him a ton of good information and I could tell he took his job really professionally. It honestly helped me have a much better idea about what questions to ask and how to make a more informed decision based on what I learned. Big bonus.
Another big factor, for me anyway, is going to a modern office — filling out forms online, sending my insurance information beforehand, etc. is really awesome. I expect my Doc’s office to operate like it’s 2015, not 1995. In fact, everything is modern and thought out about their office (and that exposed brick!), it just felt like a top notch joint.
Bottom line, i didn’t feel forced into a decision, I liked the entire the experience, and the procedure went exactly how he described it. I was feeling pretty much back to normal after a short rest. As much as possible given the situation, I really appreciated the experience, and trust Dr. Temlock now, and lastly, I would recommend him to anyone, which I don’t say very often.

From the worst day to the best day…
Sunday night: woke up to a throbbing tooth ache that wouldn’t quit. I couldn’t fall back asleep and no matter what I tried to do – I couldn’t escape this pain. I’m terrified of needles, drills
so I knew this would be a terrible 24 hours…
…until I contact Dr. Temlock. His office was able to see me on an emergency basis the next morning at 8am! When I arrived, we had a consultation and Dr. T explained my situation, my options and how the process works. They also reviewed everything with my insurance plan so there weren’t any surprises.
The procedure went better than expected. Dr. T explained everything as it was happening, constantly asking how I was feeling knowing I was terrified of the drills. He had a great balance of comfort/​humour, making the procedure as painless as possible.
…but the best part was the next day. He called me personally to make sure everything felt good and that my recovery was going well. The fact that he called personally was a great touch. You don’t see that much these days.
Overall, it was the best experience I could ask for based on the situation. The facility was clean and modern, the staff was very comforting, and Dr. Temlock was better than anything I could have asked for.
I hope I never have to experience this again, but if I do, I know that I’m in good hands…

I had a really positive experience with Dr. Temlock. I was really nervous about the whole process, but Dr. Temlock and his staff went well beyond to make sure I knew what to expect.
During my initial visit, the consultation and exam were stress free. Dr. Temlock was awesome about explaining my options and helping me weigh the pros and cons of his recommendations. I really felt like he worked with my needs and concerns to help me decide on the best treatment plan. This is totally different than other Dentists I’ve visited where I felt like they were only interested in pursuing their first recommendation.
After the actual procedure, Dr. Temlock was great about setting my expectations for recovery. He walked me through how the healing process works, and helped me understand the discomfort I should expect. He even followed up with me after the surgery to make sure everything felt ok, which I thought was a nice touch.
In summary, I was really impressed with Dr. Temlock’s approach to ensuring my needs were met and the time he spent making sure I was comfortable with every step of the process. I would definitely recommend Dr. Temlock to anyone needing a Periodondist.

I first met Dr. Alec Temlock about a month and a half ago and within that time I have had my consultation, my impressions for the protective retainer I would wear after my surgery, my surgery to get my gum graft and my follow up appointment to let me know everything is looking wonderful and healing as it should be. I was relatively nervous to have this procedure done and I am so grateful that the experience didn’t drag on for months and months and I can now go on with my life with healthier gums.
Dr. Temlock is a wonderful listener and very attentive to his patients. After I had my gum graft surgery I knew I could reach out to him any time of the day and he would respond almost immediately or within a couple of hours. I’ve never had such immediate access to a doctor before and it was an incredible comfort knowing he would be there to help me in any way possible to ensure this experience was as comfortable as it could be and with as much support as was required.

After consulting several other periodontists, I am so fortunate to have found someone as caring and trustworthy as Dr. Temlock. Dr. Temlock is a very rare doctor in that he takes the time to educate you about all the pros and cons of periodontal surgery.
