Below is the article. It is written by Jayden Eads. This shows you how corrupt our school systems are. The publication does not have any sources and is completely erroneous. Petaluma HS should teach its students how to write a thesis with supporting arguments, rather than bullshit opinions.

Face It; Guns Kill People by Jayden Eads
Just over 3 years ago, America experienced one of the worst mass shootings in history. The mass shooting of Sandy Hook Elementary school. On December 14^th of 2012, Adam Lanza, a mentally ill man with easy access to a gun, walked freely into Sandy Hook elementary and murdered 20 innocent children and 6 adults. It seems obvious that the death of these children would have quickly turned the American public to pro-​gun control, seeing as the weapon their children was murdered with was obtained legally and easily, presumably with the intent to «protect the house». So why didn’t the government immediately address the issue with a unanimous decision? The argument is far too complicated to just say abolish guns or keep them at our fingertips.
With the 2016 elections quickly approaching, many candidates are tackling gun control in their debates. However, rewind to the 2012 elections and it was less apparent in candidates arguments. Why? Because at the time, no one saw it as a major threat. Even in July of 2012, James Holmes committed a mass shooting at a movie theater in Colorado. During the chaos, he inured 82 people and killed 12 of them. In 1999, two high schoolers in Colorado committed the infamous Columbine shootings. They used a variety of guns and managed to kill 13 people, not including themselves. This happened at a high school, this is something that could easily happen to any high school, PHS is no exception.
Honestly, the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting should have been the incident that changed it all. Except it didn’t. The 20 dead children and their grieving families actually strengthened the pro 2^nd amendment argument. Obviously, if one has «bad guys» men with these terrible, dangerous, unpredictable weapons, counter them with a hero! Except the threat of mass shootings isn’t solved by shoving a gun in the hands of someone people deem as a «good man».
What can help eliminate these mass shootings? Stricter gun laws and ammunition control. The American government can’t sweep every gun into a dustpan and toss them into the trash, but they can certainly make it more difficult to obtain one. Another prevention the government could make is controlled ammunition. Without the ammunition, the gun itself is much less useful. According to The Guardian, there are somewhere between 270 and 310 million guns floating around the United States right now. That’s almost 90 guns for every 100 people. How easy is it to get a gun in the first place? In most states, a person can walk into a store and fill out a form. The store then calls the FBI and runs a background check in minutes. Denials to this process are rare, occurring in only 1% of attempts to buy a firearm according to
. These background checks are eliminated when one buys at a gun show, not to mention the millions of guns that are bought and exchanged between friends and family members.
Americans purchase guns in attempt to protect themselves from other people with guns. Isn’t that ironic? Well, the real irony comes into play when statistics are reviewed. According to
, in 2013 people who kept at least one gun in their home were 32% more likely to injure themselves with their «safety guns». What about keeping a gun in the house when there are children? Also in 2013, 1,670 children died from the family firearm. You could also argue that getting a gun is already hard enough, there’s no need to make it any more difficult. It’s blatant that there is, because shootings are still happening and people are still dying, but Americans refuse to have their rights stripped to protect others. People aren’t getting defended with their guns, they’re hurting themselves and others. A large argument from those who are pro 2^nd amendment say that they deserve to own a gun, they need to protect themselves and it should simply be a right. Everyday citizens should own a lethal weapon? Guns undeniably have one purpose; to kill and inflict harm. Yes knives, bombs, and even a boxcutter are weapons, but they have various purposes. Knives are not always used to kill people, their purpose is not exclusive to harm. Guns have one job, and frankly the average American shouldn’t have the ability to own something so dangerous and pointless.
