History

Established in 1989.

Body Manipulations was the first professional piercing studio in San Francisco. The original location was a small one room studio on Fillmore street at Haight.

In 1995 Vaughn (the original owner) moved the shop to its current location in the sunny mission district on 16th street. It was the first of its kind, all 2000 square feet solely dedicated to piercing. We have a roomy reception lobby, three private rooms and an instrument processing red room.

April 2002 Vaughn sold the shop to his long time employee Paul. This not only gave Vaughn a «get out of business free card» but it also put some young blood into the company. Paul has since opened a tattoo annex right next door to the main shop with two artists.

After nearly 20 years, we still hold true to our mission to bring you only the best quality jewelry and service possible.

Business Owner

Paul got into the piercing trade by force of habit. He began piercing himself at the age of 15. Soon enough, friends in high school caught on and began to come to him for advice and piercing. Strangers would come knocking at the door to his first apartment with money in hand. It wasn’t long before he realized he had to get some storefront.

Paul’s first studio opened in 1993 in the back of a hair salon called Melisande at 1324 Haight street. Supplementing his studio work with a live performance series «Sandbox». This was a monthly show on the limits of his body held inside a 8000 sq ft warehouse with an indoor overhead crane. He often employed the Body M staff to make these shows possible. Vaughn loved that crane!

In 1996 he was hired on at Body Manipulations and quickly expanded his knowledge working alongside famed piercers like Vaughn, Joey Wyman, Erik Dakota, Karen Hurt, and Allen Faulkner. Paul began managing the business in 2000 and took on ownership in 2002.

I came here about three or four days ago to get my belly button and my back dimples pierced. I am super happy with how all three turned out, everyone was friendly, I didn’t have to wait too long and it’s clear just how sanitary they aim to be. I suppose it was pricey but I wouldn’t wanna go somewhere else now that they have my attention and trust to do the job right!

Came in a month ago to pierce my tragus. Store is clean and staff is very professional. Tyler walked me through the entire process and answered all my questions.

Awesome place! Got my nose pierced here and I was so impressed by the service. They did a great job teaching me how to take care of my piercing and preparing me for it. Only downside was that it took forever to get in!

I feel like this place is as popular as it is because it’s one of the few places in the area and people know about it even if they aren’t stoked on it. Called up to see how long the wait was, was told it was 20 minutes. I was there within about 10 minutes and when I got in it felt dirty. I wanted a simple nose ring change (I had a stud, wanted a hoop). But their selection was so minimal — they had literally one option for me (gold, $ 60). Then when I hesitantly said ok, I was told it would be over an hour wait.
I ended up going to a place in Haight/​Ashbury — waited 15 minutes and got the nose ring I wanted for $ 20.

After reading one mom’s experience at Body Manipulations, I decided to take my daughter here to have her ears pierced today. I called and a woman named Jess answered. She was extremely friendly and nice over the phone.
I explained to her that I wanted to bring in my daughter to have her ears pierced. She let me know they weren’t busy and now was a good time to bring her. She also informed me that I would also need to have a copy of my daughter’s birth certificate with me as well in order to have her ears pierced.
When I arrived there were a couple of people ahead of us, but there were 3 people working, so we did not have to wait long, as Jess had mentioned, they were not busy. Jess had us take a look at the jewelry options available. Once we picked our jewelry, we also completed a basic health form and provided the copy of my daughter’s birth certificate.
While we were doing that, Jess was preparing everything for us. When she was ready, she took us back to the room and thoroughly explained everything to us. She made sure my kid was comfortable and it was so quick. My daughter smiled throughout the entire experience. The piercings look great. The placement, everything!
Jess went over the aftercare routine with us and has made herself available for any follow-​up questions and even suggested we come back in to make sure everything is okay after a month or so. She gave us her business card and an instruction pamphlet, which she went over with us as I previously mentioned. Great customer service. Jess and the two other guys I saw there were super friendly, and I saw each of them give their clients great service and attention. I could tell the customers were happy. All in all, a really good vibe in there.
You can purchase an after-​care kit there, which I did for convenience sake. I am extremely pleased with Body Manipulations. I know you should never go to those places in the mall that use those piercing guns. They shouldn’t be allowed to even use them! They are unsanitary! Always best to have an experienced professioinal do this. You don’t want any mishaps!

Front desk people were very warm, friendly and knowledgeable and helped me find what I was looking for in terms of style and the best artist to do my tattoo. I’ve been wanting a Japanese brush calligraphy tattoo for a while but didn’t know who was a specialist in SF. The front desk guy pointed me to Colin, who grew up in Japan and he did an amazing job. He was as gentle as possible and used a few different types of needles to get the brush look just right. As I was lying there I was looking at his other drawings on the wall and he draws absolutely beautifully. I would confidently go to him for any other tattoo idea I come up with in the future and recommend him to anyone looking for a special tattoo that requires higher level art skills. Rates here are super reasonable considering the skill level. Five thumbs up!

I’ve been by here for larger plugs, but I haven’t had any piercings done here (at least yet). There was only a short wait when I went by on a weekday afternoon and the staff were friendly and helpful. I also found the prices quite reasonable.
On the downside, their selection of jewelry was not very large, so I wouldn’t go here to shop. They did have all the basics though.

I came here to get my nose pierced. After walking in and out of piercing stores for ten years, I finally gathered the courage to take the leap. I met with Jess who very sweetly walked me through what she was going to do.
She has the most re-​assuring voice and made me feel sooo comfortable. She helped me pick a stud and after talking to her for about 2 minutes, I completely trusted her. The piercing didn’t hurt much and was super quick and smooth (barely 2 seconds). She carefully explained the after care and told me to return when I felt like changing the stud.
This place is amazing and these people sure know what they’re doing. Absolute professionals. Don’t bother going anywhere else. I paid $ 40 for my piercing, which i initially felt was steep. But after getting pierced, I truly felt that I’d gotten my moneys worth! Thanks Jess!

My birthday is coming up (Woohoo!) and I will be the young age of 27. I am most likely going to have to work that day, so I had to do something for myself in advance. I thought, what would be something nice to do for myself as a birthday gift. I know! I will get a piercing!
I did some research and found Body Manipulations was the place to go. I went in with a picture of what is called the «helix.» The man I showed the picture to, Alex, laughed and said they see that picture quite often, and that it is not a doable piercing. In case you girls are wondering, its the one on Pinterest that’s black and white and super cute. He explained to me that the only reason she was able to get it done, is because she has a freakishly large ear. This made me laugh, and instantly, I knew he would be the one I wanted to pierce me. I was a little distraught because I had intentions on getting that helix, and found myself with no plan on what to do.
Alex helped me come up with one. He drew a few marks on each of my ears, and I loved his idea. I told him I was a little nervous, because I have trouble with needles in general. He assured me that he’ll walk me through each step. If you aren’t good with needles, Alex is the one to have pierce you. He made me laugh almost the whole time I was waiting to get pierced. Which calmed my nerves a lot. The piercing process was quick! I was so scared about the pain, but really, it was no big deal at all. The best part. I ended up with 5 piercings total! This is coming from a person with belonephobia!
Alex did a great job, and I am a very happy with the outcome. I will post pics for you all to see his work.
Definitely recommend this place. Friendly staff in general. Very clean shop.

After multiple piercings, I’ve come to realize that the one thing I look for when I get my piercing is how comfortable I feel with the piercer.
Eldo at Body Manipulations is super awesome! Not only was he chill, he was knowledgeable and very funny. The whole experience was great!
My piercing (helix) was $ 94 for the service, jewelry, and tip. If you think it’s a little pricey, just know you’re paying for quality!

I didn’t think I would like any other piercing shops besides Inkie’s in Fremont, but Eldo has definitely changed my mind! Found this place on Unilocal on a Saturday afternoon with my sister and her friends for a spontaneous wanting of a piercing!
I wanted a bar at first, but Eldo said I didn’t qualify, so I ended up getting a rook! Eldo explained the whole process to us, while also telling us funny/​cool stories of other piercings. He is super outgoing and resourceful, and told us everything we had to do to care for our piercing. Great technique– I hardly felt any pain!
It was $ 90 for both the piercing service and jewelry. I will definitely come back if I need another one!

I recently got my Tragus pierced in a different state and the front of the earring fell off and I couldn’t find it and since I’ve never had anything pierced in sf I decided to Unilocal a place to buy another ring. This place did not let me down! The guy who was helping me was very helpful and quick. I chose the earring I wanted and he was able to get it back on in 5 min and he also checked my piercing to make sure it was healing correctly. I mentioned to him my concern regarding not the earring falling out again because it’s a screw retained one instead of push pin style so he cranked it really tight for me with a pair of pliers. The service was awesome and the prices were very reasonable! I would definitely recommend getting your piercings here!

Excellent, excellent experience here.
I had my nose pierced at a different shop, which was a good experience, but a day later I noticed my piercing had really sank down into the new hole and I was freaked out. I tried to have it fixed at the same shop, but the piercer was out. Considering I was in the middle of a stretch of night shifts and I worked that night, I needed some place to go right then so I could head back to bed. They suggested Body Manipulations.
Jess greeted me, was willing to fix the bend of my stud free of charge, and reassured me. I had no issues with the piercing after that and knew I’d come back to have the stud changed.
Fast forward 4 months. I stopped in to have my nose piercing and another piece of jewelry changed (jewelry is pricy here, but it’s good quality so you get what you pay for). I’d been waffling about getting a tattoo that reflects my current profession as a travel nurse. Jess recommended Yoshi.
$ 40 to hold an appointment. And a week later I’m here getting my (last?) ink. $ 180 for an hour and the deposit is subtracted from that. Yoshi was very understanding of my design idea, very patient, and super concise. My tattoo turned out nicely and I really like it a lot.
Great place to come if you are looking for some type of body modification. Very pleased.

My friend lost the front of her earring and wanted to go back to the shop where she purchased them in the first place. To her dismay, they no longer sell that style — the kind where the front piece is connected to a bendable wire that fits into the back slot. They now only carry those that screw together.
While she was debating buying a whole new pair, I was surveying the cases of jewelry. I saw many pieces I liked, but they were all too expensive (for what they were) for my taste. After asking for prices, we smiled and decided to look elsewhere. There’s a piercing shop back home in Long Beach that sells what she’s looking for, so she’s going to come with me the next time she’s down south.

When I was looking online for a place to get a tragus piercing done in SF, this place by far had the most tragus-​specific reviews (I’m guessing cartilage piercings are all similar, but a tragus is such a small space that I wanted to hear from people who had theirs done). Since what I read was so important to my decision, I thought I’d share my experience.
Alex did the piercing, and, overall, everyone was super nice and helpful and everything went surprisingly quickly – I had expected it to take a larger chunk out of my day, especially considering that it was a weekend afternoon, but between choosing my jewelry, waiting my turn, getting the piercing, and learning aftercare/​paying, I was in and out in 30 minutes.
He drew a dot showing where the piercing would go to make sure I liked it, and I couldn’t be happier with the placement. Everything was very clean and the piercing itself was like getting a shot – I’m sure this is different for everyone, but I still can’t get over how easy it was. Two days later, I still have no noticeable swelling.
Know that in addition to the piercing ($ 40) and the visible end of the jewelry, you’re also paying for the post holding the jewelry in separately. You’re probably buying aftercare products as well.

This is absolutely the best place to get body art done. Most places, I fear tetanus, I’m very OCD, and picky when it comes to places like this, but EVERYTHING IS HOSPITAL CLEAN!!!
It’s amazingly clean, and the staff are wonderful and nice people. They care about your health, and the art, and if something is wrong, or doesn’t feel right, they will help you.
Jameson did my first two piercings years ago, and helped me when I needed to get other jewelry. Recently about two months ago I got caught on a van door and broke an earring (a very nice black CZ stud), and two wonderful ladies at the front counter were really nice and helped me order a new piece in replacement.
The only place, where as a man, I would shop for piercing jewelry.

Came in yesterday to have my dermal removed. I called around different shops in San Francisco and everyone recommended that to have my dermal removed, the best place would be body manipulations. Called and spoke with Jess who told me I didn’t need an appointment and she would be able to help me! The procedure itself was so mild in terms of pain. If anything it was just pressure. Jess was quick and super sweet and took awesome care of me! It was nothing like the horror stories you hear about getting microdermals out! I highly recommend Jess for any piercing removals. I’m sure she’s just as amazing at doing piercings! Thanks Jess!

I’m really sad to be leaving just an average review, but I have to tell you guys that I did not have the best experience here. Although they accepted me as a walk-​in, I was really disappointed with:
a) the lack of clarification of how much a regular lobe piercing would be,
b) the lack of clarification of how much the jewelry would be,
and c) the promise of being able to help me if something were to go awry post-​piercing.
The piercing itself was fine and the person doing my piercing (she had blonde hair, forget her name) was very swiftly done and did not hurt at all.
It wasn’t until 4 months after the piercing, after not only doing the recommended salt water soak twice a day, but also, cleaning it with Dr Brannan’s soap every other day, that my ears somehow got horribly infected. I contact the person who pierced my ears, both through phone and email, and thoroughly explained what had happened despite my careful caretaking. I also included a photo, which she recommended that I should add if something were to go wrong, promising that it wouldn’t be weird or anything.
Never got a reply and luckily I was able to save myself from the infection by visiting a doctor on campus at my university.
But after the tip, I paid something like $ 100 – 110 for the piercing plus jewelry. At the time, I was excited about it, until I realized that I was robbed blind by doing my piercing at a bougie tattoo store in San Francisco. Despite my initial liking I took to the business, they really didn’t do much for me as a potential returning customer. I won’t be coming back for future piercings.

Eldo gave me and my SO a great experience here. We both got our septums pierced. Eldo was really thorough in making sure everything was set up right and was especially clear about sterilization (which I appreciate). He was also really friendly and laid back. The shop in general has a good vibe and I would definitely go back to get another piercing or tattoo.

Love this place! The staff– especially Jess, is just beyond awesome. Jewelry is a big purchase for me as I live on a very tight budget. I was searching for the right nose ring for about a year and she stuck with me, helping me try on different rings on multiple occasions when I’d stop by the shop on my way home. Really great service from Gary! I came in today looking to replace my old cartilage piercings. I’m really glad insertion is free with the jewelry purchase because I have a really painful time attempting to put them in myself. The process took about 10 minutes. Gary took his time to make sure all the balls at the end of the jewelry were secure and did an awesome job easing me into the process.
I wish I knew I could get 10% off a i purchase for checking in Unilocal before coming in here, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind next time!

Collin Stevens is one of the best, if not the best, tattoo artist in the city and one of the best in the country. You will not be disappointed. He took a horrible tribal I had and turned it into an amazing piece of art. Exactly what I wanted with the Japanese shading and crows I asked for. His rates are probably too reasonable ($ 180/​hour) for his skill level. Great artist and you may hear some amazing podcasts if you are there at the right time. Already planning my next tattoo.

This place is an absolute joke. I went in to get my septum and smiley done. The smiley I just wanted the simple hoop like jewelry with the balls on the end, so that wasn’t the problem. However the septum is a very common piercing and their selection is incredibly overpriced. They either had the cheap one with the ball on the end for about $ 30 or cute ones for about $ 200+. No in between. Are you serious? Of course I am not going to pay that much just because that’s all they had to offer.
Walked over to Nomads piercing on Market. Go there! BEFORE ringing me up, the man checked where I wanted my smiley done and said I couldn’t have it done because it’s too short and my body would just reject. Got some other piercings done and my septum (where they actually have a selection) for a reasonable price.

I’ve been wanting to get my septum done so I walked into body manipulation and asked the guy at the front desk all about it. How much does it hurt, how long to heal and so on. He was patient about my indecision on whether to get it or not.
Then I waited 15 min and Eldo came out to get me. He explained how the process was going to work and promised me it would hurt less than popping a bad pimple. I was so scared and nervous, But he was right! I didn’t even feel it!
What I love about Eldo was that he checked my septum before hand and noticed that it was deviated and slightly slanted. He explained how he had to pierce it kind of diagonally so that the piercing could look straight. I’m glad I came to him! He’s been in the business since 2004.

Great place with friendly staff. When I went here, it was by no means my first piercing, but I appreciated that I was talked through the process and especially the aftercare (don’t want to skim over that stuff!). Jess did the double piercings in my ears, and she was awesome! She was gentle and quick — so the whole process was over very quickly. I went around noon on a weekday, so it wasn’t busy, but I’ve heard BodyM does get very busy sometimes, so be prepared for a wait depending when you’d go. It was a bit pricey, but still affordable, and honestly on par with other places in the area.

I’ve wanted to get my nose pierced for a while and finally found the time and opportunity to do it. A while ago, when asking around where people recommended, a friend mentioned Body Manipulations so I Unilocaled them. I saw their wonderful 5⁄5 stars and 600+ reviews and knew if I was going to commit to getting my nose pierced, I would definitely want to get it done there.
I went with my boyfriend and his sister-​in-​law, because she is planning on getting hers done too. We were immediately greeted by the guy at the front desk. I told him what I wanted, signed some papers, and looked at their jewelry. Although they only have walk-​in appointments, l didn’t have to wait very long (maybe 10 minutes).
Next, we were greeted by my piercer, Marcelo. I expressed how nervous I was and he was so understanding and calming. He told me it was not bad at all and that I was going to walk out of the appointment saying «that’s it?», which was exactly what happened. The only part that felt a little uncomfortable was when he was adjusting the jewelry inside my nostril. After adjusting my jewelry, he gave me a pamphlet and explained how to take care of my piercing.
I couldn’t be happier with my experience. Everyone, from the guy at the front desk to Marcelo, my piercer, was wonderful! They made me feel welcome and calm all at the same time. I didn’t expect such friendly service from a tattoo and piercing parlor! If I ever decide on another piercing or even a tattoo, I am definitely coming back here.
The only down «negative» thing I have to say about this place is that the jewelry is pretty expensive. It was $ 40 for the piercing alone and another $ 80 for my stud. $ 80 is the cheapest stud they sell; however, that’s because it’s 18K gold with cubic zirconia. They offer real diamonds too, which I think are about $ 120. I was okay with buying the expensive jewelry because I would have rather have something of good quality that won’t irritate my nose and looks nice than something that will cause an allergic reaction.
Overall, I couldn’t be happier with my experience and would definitely recommend this place! :)

I hear this place gets pretty crowded on the weekends, so I went after work (around ~6pmish) on a Tuesday night. The front desk person was pretty friendly and got my paperwork done immediately. I only had to wait about ~20min for my actual appointment.
I’ve never gotten my ears pierced before and decided to go for a cartilage, which I heard mixed opinions on. Most of my friends agreed that while it wasn’t unbearably painful, it does hurt, and I’m a HUGE wuss when it comes to needles. Needless to say I was pretty nervous.
My piercer was Marcelo, who was super friendly and had me feeling relaxed within a few minutes of stepping into the back room. I asked if he thought, in his honest opinion, that the piercing would hurt. He jokingly said that for it to hurt would cost $ 100 extra, because it’s so difficult for him to make it actually painful. That definitely comforted me. :)
He was really careful in cleaning it before and checking with me that the mark he made (where the needle would go through) was in the right spot. The actual piercing was super quick and completely painless; I didn’t feel a thing! Getting the jewelry in (I got a hoop, not stud) was slightly uncomfortable, but nowhere near painful.
Afterwards he went over the cleaning routine with me and made sure I understood how to take care of the piercing.
It’s been a night so far and still no pain or signs of infection. :) Overall, super happy with this experience! I can definitely see why this place has 5 stars.

Came by here (cus of the great reviews) to get my friends nose pierced on a Saturday afternoon. We waited almost 45 min as walk ins but we didn’t mind. Guy at the front counter was very helpful and friendly! This place is SUPER CLEAN with hand sanitizer stations everywhere. Always a plus.
The jewelry selection was kind of small, but you can tell it’s good quality jewelry. The piercer, Eldo was soo nice, cool and funny! Knew how to entertain us and still get the job done quickly and effectively.
I think the total for a piercing and hoop jewelry was about $ 70. kind of more than I’m used to spending but not too shabby. Will be back!

This past Saturday for Valentine’s Day I went in with my two sisters for sister piercings (super cute right?). I got my previous three piercings done here and had an impeccable experience. Their staff continues to be the most knowledgeable in the field. I had decided on my daith because I wanted something discrete and different. Body M was so awesome to take the three of us in considering we arrived 15 minutes before they closed. They were super accommodating and patient with us considering we were their last clients of the day and weren’t even sure what we wanted to get pierced.
Eldo was my piercer. He is the best of the best! The placement of the daith is interesting because it comes out of the ear canal. Eldo first drew a line as to where the piercing would be to see if I was happy with it. Daith piercing requires a curved needle which he used with a catch so it doesn’t continue piercing (nobody wants that!). I kid you not, I barely felt anything! After 15 years of experience, Eldo has still got it. He had me breathe in and then out as needle passed through and it happened so fast and painlessly that I never had time to think about bracing for the puncture.
He prepared me for the slight pressure I would feel when the jewelry was being put in. He was so cool throughout and I was very appreciative of how how he talked me through the whole process. He then went into details about the aftercare of my fresh piercing. I was super excited when he told he was a fellow Aggie! It was clearly meant to be.
Body M is top notch service. Five years after my last piercing, and after this week’s visit, I was reminded why I would never go anywhere else! Body M is the only place I recommend to anyone that I care about. The service, quality of the jewelry (pricey, but well worth it) and insight provided by staff is invaluable.

While these people did a fantastic job with my tragus piercing and event let my friend into the piercing room with me, their front desk representative was incredibly rude.
I’m fairly certain she was a manager because she was treating one of the interns working like crap. The things she would say to the intern at the front desk were awful. And while I’m glad I came here for my first cartilage piercing, I will never forget how rude the management was to it’s staff.
While I would highly recommend their clean and cost effective piercing, be wary of their management staff…
