one part genius, two parts chaos, three parts amazing strength, beautiful voices, bizzare images, dark lighting, strong performance, and hurting feet because i ran there from the bart station to make it on time.
keep this company in mind next time you want to see something REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY cool!
i’m picky. you all know this. really picky. this doesn’t suck. trust the pessimist.

We went to see their new show, Drop, this weekend. Let me begin by saying that I hate most dance. OK, I hate most things. But modern dance, in particular, all too often seems to be tinged with a kind of douchebaggy self-​importance that I cannot abide; like bad Shakespeare, it has secured a permanent place on the list of Things That Give Me Painful Rectal Itch.
I would slap Merce Cunningham if I ever met him face-​to-​face.
But check it out: the burgeoning world of Dance Theatre has spawned some incredibly kickass performance– Mark Morris, Pina Bausch, Joe Goode. And now Dandelion Dancetheater.
HOLY SHIT. Drop was awesome! Those of you who know me know what a crankypants I am about performance, and I LOVED this show. It was brilliant and funny, as well as insightful and meaningful and all kinds of words I never ever use.
Eric Kupers heads up the piece as director (and co-​director of the company), and he is a fucking genius. The end. Don’t even look at me that way.
The only drawback to Drop (which closes on Labor Day weekend, so you still have a chance to go see it) is that it’s playing at CellSpace in the city, and CellSpace blows donkeys because they have a resident cat. I had a massive allergy attack halfway through the second half and MISSED THE END OF THE SHOW. Which sucks. I mean, usually I’m begging for some kind of bomb threat or cerebral hemorrhage to relieve me of having to see a show all the way through, but this time I was truly pissed. I’m a card-​carrying vegetarian animal rights person, but all cats should be exiled to fucking Cat Island in the middle of the ocean.
