Today, was my first time at David James and I am over the moon happy! To put this in perspective I have not written a review in years (ain’t nobody got time for that), but because of Camille’s and Ching’s talent I had to drop a few lines.
Camille knows her stuff and is honest! She is a true professional who listens, and you should too! If she says your black hair shouldn’t go Instagram gray… Listen! I did, and I left with gorgeous dimension and depth in my hair. Camille took my brassy Asian blonde hair and transformed it by baylaging it. She turned my brassy orange ends to an ashy blonde, which is beautiful! Best part is because we pulled my natural hair color down a bit I won’t have to touch up unless I choose to. Yassss queen yass because again… Ain’t no body got time to mess with roots. The best part of Camille is her warmth. I left feeling like I knew her years!
Now on to Ching! She is pure magic and like Camille extremely talented. I came in with a lob that needed freshening up. It was damaged from all the bleaching I had done to it earlier and I didn’t want cut it too short. Ching took about 2 inches off and styled it straight then with beachy waves. Both styles looked amazing and I am so happy. Ching is focused when she works but is so polite! She works in silence and for an overactive unicorn like myself it can be unsettling BUT she communicated that with me before hand and even offered me her charger to keep myself occupied. The end result was stunning! You can tell that Ching cares and wants her clients to be happy. Upon leaving she said if I decided I needed more off or anything to come back and she would fix it. Talk about service! She is a gem and I am so happy to have found her.
Overall, I highly recommend both stylists. It is definitely worth the investment. Go in and be honest with them. The best part is that they will be honest with you too. If it is something they can do then the execution will leave you breathless, but if they cannot they will not take risks with your locks which I totally appreciate. Ahhh… I can’t get over how much I love my hair. Camille and Ching, you two are the best!!!

First time to David James to see Ching after many years, and she seriously blew me away with her skills!
I came in with a long + straight simple style, and left with the most amazing short lob, I haven’t received so many compliments on my hair in years!

I followed Wendy to David James from Dreamers and Makebelievers, and to be honest I would follow her anywhere. I have never known a more intuitive and talented stylist. She can execute a cut perfectly from a photo or description, or help you come up with something on the fly. Whatever you decide on, it will be tailored to your face, texture, and routine. I don’t blow dry or use products, and she really takes the time create shapes that can stand alone. Plus they grow out like magic; six months later, I’ll still be getting compliments on her work. A genius and a gentle soul. Most highly recommended.

This is a MASSIVELY overdue review for my girl Camille — she is the absolute best and my hair thanks her. In fact, I am worried that this review is going to drive up her demand even more. She has changed my life by switching me over to ballayage rather than highlights. It looks so much more natural and lovely and grows out so well. Also, the cuts are amazing — they too grow out well and she keeps my hair long, while creating great shape and movement. Guess what else… they play great music and the vibe is cool. They other stylists are cool and there is generally a good feeling about the space.

What an amazing place — so comfortable and friendly! And, Daniel gave me the BEST cut. He was so detailed, he really took time to make sure all my layers were perfect! I’ll DEFINITELY be back to Daniel!

Went to David James for the first time today, and received a fantastic treatment from Whitney. I wanted to change my hair length by at least 5 inches and she did a fantastic job meeting my demands/​expectations. I also love the scalp massage she gave me while washing my hair.
Definitely will be back!

Best stylist in the Bay Area for men and women. When I first moved out to the bay area I was looking for somebody good and I started getting my haircut with David in Marin. When I started working in the city I reached out to him and continued getting cut with him at his site. This one is even nicer than the San Rafael shop. He is such a great professional, and listens to what you want and respects your style and requests, providing his opinion. I can’t say it enough. He is amazing. All his fellow stylists are also great, the best at what they do in the city.
I am very particular about my hair and have only had 4 people ever cut my hair and he is one. Hope he never gives up! Love my haircut every time.

THE best salon in all of SF. Beautiful space, free-​flowing coffee (and sometimes wine + beer) plus the incredibly talented Amy, who understands all of your hair needs and never disappoints. She’s also very flexible and can schedule appointments via text, which is great. I started coming here a year or so ago and have already converted three of my best friends, too. Highly, highly recommend. Alise is also great for color.

I’ve been getting my hair cut by Wendy for many years and I have NEVER had a bad (or even average) cut. Wendy is by far one of the best hair stylists I’ve ever had the pleasure of going to. She is extremely talented and gifted, has absolutely NO pretense, is patient, kind, and professional. Whether you know exactly what you want or have no idea, Wendy will deliver the best possible cut/​style that compliments you and your personality — every time.

Went in for a cut and color this weekend — was extremely nervous as I’ve had long hair for almost all my life and I was going to go shoulder-​length. Whitney did my cut and Alise did my color — both women did such a fantastic job. Honestly couldn’t have turned out any better and I am really pleased with how my hair looks. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend this salon!

After doing Unilocal research for a new stylist, I found Camille and saw a couple photos of pixie cuts she’d done. I have super fine, thin «baby» hair, that shows every mis-​cut, so it takes the right kind of stylist to, well, get the cut right. Camille was great! Friendly and professional, she got exactly what kind of cut I wanted (even though my description was somewhat vague), and stopped throughout the cutting process to check in about her next steps. I am super happy with how it turned out and am very much wanting to get some color done by her as well, once my wallet recovers from the holiday season.

Highly recommend this salon. I do suggest that you make an appointment instead of walking in like how I did, but the ladies there were so kind & one of them, Kristina, took me in without any appointment. She knew exactly what she was doing with my hair, asked me questions with what I wanted, how I maintain my hair & giving me advice on how to improve it more. Most importantly, she kept the length of my hair. She is such a sweetheart & is so easy to get along with. This is my first time having my hair professionally done in over 5 – 7 years & it was a good experience getting back to it. I will definitely be coming back soon to get some coloring done with her.

@Kristina came highly recommended from a best girlfriend. After years of disappointing hair cuts, I am always a bit nervous trying new stylists. But Kristina, I love you so! This woman does wonders on your hair. I went in thinking I wanted short choppy layers like I have had for years and she suggested a blunt cut w/​balayage. The end result was amazing. I had a completely redesigned new ‘do and color that transformed my hair. She did such an amazing job and I have already recommended her to 3 friends. HIGHLY RECOMMEND~!

Hands down, Daniel is an absolute hair genius. I have some seriously thick hair that all stylists before him could not tame — but he manages like he knows my hair better than life itself (slight exaggeration, but you get the idea!) I’m talking thick, straight Mexican hair that grows as he cuts it (almost serious) — the man can make my hair do things I didn’t know possible (like look nice with minimal daily effort). Daniel, you are amazing. I would travel far and wide to keep this dude cutting my hair — he’s just that good!
Also to note, the salon is simply beautifully understated in its modern elegance. If I could, I’d bring a book and a cup of tea and just sit in the bay window taking in the sun and music for the afternoon. It’s just that lovely.

I love this place. Great décor, great vibe — and I particularly love seeing Amy! Most of the stylists here used to work at DiPietro Todd which is a super highly regarded salon in SF. I was so excited to have that level of quality but with a little younger/​hipper vibe.

Camille is my girl, and we’ve only been seeing each other for a handful of months. Hailing from her previous salon, Population, Camille simply knows her shit… or at least she knows what to do with me. I came to see her months ago with a color blunder and I wanted to go back to a more low-​maintenance do. She told me what I needed to hear, which was to let part of it grow out and then she’d balayage & blend. She takes pride in her work and has been honest with her opinion whether it’s color or how much I want to cut off. And she’s just a delight.

I followed Camille from population to David James and I couldn’t be happier! Obsessed with her technique and color skills. She’s wonderful!

First time of writing on Unilocal.I just can’t help for not raving about Daniel and his staff. First of the salon is away from being pretentious. Funky little corner shop and an extra space for an art gallery. David James also carry a lot of great hair product.
I always have had long hair since high school. I finally decided to chop it all off to celebrate my 37^th birthday and I wanted to do it in SF. (A really good friend introduced me to Daniel). Daniel listened to my issues and exactly what I wanted to do with my hair. I live in DC and if there’s a way to see Daniel every 6 weeks I would!
Daniel gave me this super killer hair cut and an amazing blow dry as well. He even washed my hair so he can see and feel the texture of my hair. He took his time and he even check if I wanted to be shorter what not. I want to give them 10 stars!!!
Definitely will be back.

I’ve been going to Alise for haircuts for some time now and I basically wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair. Whitney is great, and I’ve actually been in to see her a few times as well, since her days at Di Pietro Todd. Daniel, what can I say. The hype is real, he’s a true artiste.
If you need a cut and color and you are in Alamo Square, their attention to detail is unparalleled. It’s a beautiful place with a bright, open atmosphere. It’s got an art gallery in the waiting room. All and all its just a fabulous addition to the neighborhood.
My haircut is exactly what I wanted. I couldn’t be happier. These guys are the best! ;)

I literally never write Unilocal reviews but these people deserve some recognition! Today was the second time I’ve been to David James. The first time I just a haircut with Whitney. It turned out FANTASTIC and I received so many compliments. I have long brunette hair and I’m always so afraid people are going to cut too much! She was able to keep my hair long like I wanted, give me bangs that fit my face well and finish cutting out my last bit of bleach ombré from over 2 years ago all while keeping my hair wonderfully long.
Today I made appt for a cut and color, since they gained my trust at my first appt. Kristina was my colorist. She is wonderfully knowledgeable and confident in her skills. She dyed my hair back to its original color (first time in years– I had been doing a cherry cola thing for the past few). I told her I didn’t want that anymore and she just did her thing. She also educated me on some tips for keeping long hair healthy at the ends and how to get volume at the root with out hair spray or product. For someone like me who doesn’t always now what will look best, she was beyond perfect. Whitney did my cut again and it turned out perfect again.
And to top it all off they did this all in a little over 2 hours. I’ve always had much longer experiences and to be honest I would prefer not to be in a salon 4 hours. Besides both of them being experts at their craft, their efficiency is a major plus for me.
Seriously DJ is the best salon I’ve ever been too.
