Wow, this is the worst haircut experience I ever had to endure in my life. The place was seedy and messy. Even my room is cleaner than this establishment. But let’s talk about the haircut itself. The man that gave me the haircut didn’t even speak English. He is Asian and looks like he is in his 80s. When I came in, he pointed at a chair to signal me to sit there. When I sat down, he started cutting my hair without even asking me what style I wanted. I realized he does not speak English so I took out my phone to find a picture to show him how I want my haircut. When I showed him a picture I found, he barely looked at it and didn’t even say anything to acknowledge the picture. I thought, «Okay fine, maybe he is a master haircutter and will give me a great haircut anyways». Nope I was totally wrong. He could barely use the tools. When he was using the razor, it was barely cutting any hair off. I don’t know if it was because the razor was too blunt or he didn’t know how to use it, but it was clear it just was not working. When he was «finished», I couldn’t even tell I got a haircut. In fact, no body could tell I got a haircut when I asked them. My hair basically looked the same and looks NOTHING like the picture I showed him.

The elderly man in the corner is a pro. I’ll be going back to him for as long as he cuts hair.

The only reason I gave it a four Is because it looked and felt soooooo dirty.
Not a way to maintain an establishment.
However the haircut, low pricing, attention to detail and end product was a strong 5 star review.
However all of the credit goes to the hairstylist.
I wish I could’ve gotten his name. I will go to him continuously. His work station is in the middle of it all.
Great place, it just needs a bit of a clean up.

My god. It is the worst crap shoot in a haircut experience I have ever seen. I have gone here probably about ten times and 6 of those times they straight killed my hair. I am talking about missed fades, no edging, uneven fades, cutting off whole sections of hair and leaving spots and scratches all over.
There are about 6 to 8 chairs cutting hair and they shuffle people in and out quickly. What you will learn though is some are way better than others at certain hair types. Don’t get rushed when you get here. Find the one you like and wait for them. They will try to give you to the first available and this is how to get your shit ruined.
The black barber, the youngest barber were the only two that can cut hair reliably. The rest of the old men managed to mess up my hair no matter what. No matter what you tell them or what picture you show them they end up doing their own thing anyway. I once came out with a high top fade when I asked for a tapered fade.
Some people have the guys they go to often that know their hairstyle but you have to go several times and have some trial and error to get that. Some handle buzz cuts and some handle longer hair better. You just have to feel it out and ask straight up who is the best at doing the cut you are requesting. For the love of god please know what kind of haircut you want because if you guess and try to tell them they will just go rogue on your hair and you will end up looking like an ASPCA ad and them singing «in the arms of an angel» about your hair.
Shout out to the two or three guys there who can cut black mens hair and listen to instruction. For everyone else please proceed with caution.
The main bonus is its expensive. You can get in and out for less that 15 dollars which is unheard of in SF. However you have to deal with everything that is outside including selling drugs and fights. You have to deal with the barbers who have no idea what they are doing. and you have to deal with the shady customers trying to selling you things, fighting and yelling in and out of the place. You ready to go to war to get a haircut? Then make the trek to this place and see what you are made of.

I hope you like bullshit and f’d up haircutts because that is all these baboons will deliver!

Do not go to this place unless you know Vietnamese. Difficult to communicate with the barber because he knows no english at all. He couldn’t even understand me when i told him he made my head into a square and someone had to try to translate. I thought it would be fine since i kept showing a picture of me in the past and told him to try to cut it exactly like that. It was terrible and at that point i gave up on him trying to fix it and told him he’s done. He couldn’t even understand me when gave him a $ 50 and asked for change

This is a Barber Shop; do not come in expecting salon treatment.
This place is good if you want a basic haircut, but as soon as you start getting «Fancy» the communication breaks down.
In addition, what do you expect from a Cash Only $ 12 hair cut shop?

If you know what you want and can articulate it well, this may be the best price/​quality intersection for a haircut in the city.
$ 12 haircut, complete with hot towel scalp massage. Walk-​ins didn’t seem to be a problem either, they certainly get customers but you won’t likely have to wait long if at all.
The 6^th Street location is the main deterrent, but it’s not that bad.

Great cut and great price, but I can’t believe I came here.

Wednesday AM: Loud «street people» galore and dirty outside, but on the inside it was an old school barber shop set-​up. The barbers are mostly or all asian. I think I recognized some langauges as tagalog (Filipino) and tieng viet (Vietnamese). This is just an observation so you can be prepared to communicate. Bold «Street people» came in every 10 mins or so and either tried to sell something or asked for money (one guy came trying to sell some headphones).
–My barber, Hin, started off slow. I was a little worried at first. There was a slight miscommunication/​misunderstanding on what I wanted, but he finished off with good results once we cleared it up.
Would I come here again? Yes I’ll go see Hin — if I don’t have time to visit my local cut place that is «safely» situated in suburbia. Just make sure you keep your eyes open while waking there, communicate clearly to your barber, and have the cut done incrementally to see how it goes.
Price = $ 12+tip

Difficult to communicate with the barber and he destroyed my head. He was too rough with the razor on my neck and it hurt for a week. The left and right sides weren’t even and I asked him to stop. Another barber there had to fix it for me (as much as he could). It’s not worth coming here just to save money.

Holy macaroni this place is a good find. I’ve paid 4x for haircuts by barbers who care half as much about the final product. My guy was super attentive and, damn, what a cut for $ 12. The prices are too low so I flipped him a $ 20.
Don’t come here if the only environment you can get your hair cut in is super luxury. Come here if you wanna keep it real and leave looking good.

Amazing. A very attentive cut by a very skilled barber and all for $ 12. I don’t get to SF that often but it’s on my must-​do list for next time too. Best haircut I’ve had in years, easily.

I was way overdue for a haircut, and my usual barber was booked, so I took a chance on DZ&Y. The place is pretty shabby (it’s located on 6^th Street… duh!). There were 5 barbers, no waiting. I got a very solid haircut, exactly like I specified. The price: $ 12! So if you are in a hurry, and need a good cut at an incredibly reasonable price– I would recommend it.

Fast, cheap and polite staff. I just walked in to this place and they attended me right away. In 20 minutes I had my hair cut. Very simple but friendly Asian/​Mexican barbers. 12 dollars + 3 for tips.
Obviously this is not a styling salon. But if you just want s regular haircut, I totally recommend it.

More than a deal. I thought I was just going to a cheap barber shop but damn. This is a great place. Tip your barber they do a damn good job here!

This place is great, for what it is! This is not a fancy place but the barbers know what they are doing and the cut is only $ 12… Great price for a solid cut!

I only ever get buzz cuts (zero), so it’s a simple case. And normally I end up paying $ 20+ before tips, for, well, a little bit of a machine buzzing it all off. Now, this place, they are very thorough with the machine. Next, they take a shaver thingy, and kind of polish it off. Then, they wrap your head with a hot towel. They even do a little ear cleaning, while at it. Then, they apply a little bit of some lotion thing… and it’s all for $ 12! I’m just a guy getting a simple buzz-​cut, but they make it feel like I’m getting a job done there. Unlike any place I’ve been to before. Oh, and you normally get a quick shoulder massage at the conclusion of the event.
Oh, and yes, the place looks a little dirty and run-​down — a perfect downtown SF feel, if you ask me!

Was waiting for friends shopping at the Westfield so I came in for a quick trim. All Asian barbers who do not speak any English. I asked for an inch off the top but they took off like 4. The guy paid attention and trimmed the edges great, until he cut off all my fucking hair. I was super angry and left immediately. Btw, I showed him a pic of what I wanted, and it was nothing close. Sooo angry

DZ & Y is fantastic! Yes, it’s not in the most glamorous neighborhood. If it were you wouldn’t be paying $ 10 for your haircut.
I was really impressed how quickly I was seated once I walked in and how fast the actual cut was. They don’t trade speed for quality, though.
I will DEFINITELY be back and have already told everyone I know how legit the place is!
