Excel Painting & Restoration has been specializing in both interior and exterior painting of many styles of homes in San Francisco and north of the Golden Gate bridge since 1988. Excel is especially recognized for their restoration and colour design of fine, ornately embellished Victorian homes.

Established in 1988.

I came to San Francisco from Dublin, Ireland to work for another contractor and set up my own business within six months and never looked back. Excel is founded on the highest level of workmanship and we ensure that our works always satisfies our clients.

I did my apprenticeship through my grandfather in Ireland where he was a painter and decorator. After a few years of working in Ireland, I moved to San Francisco and started my own business, Excel Painting & Restoration.

As the owner of Excel Painting, I’ve built my company on the same values that are reflected in our quality of craftsmanship and customer satisfaction. This philosophy is carried from project to project enhancing your home with texture, colors and details to comprehensively restore its charming properties.

I am also a licensed general contractor and can undertake complete façade restorations. We can repair a simple piece of dry rot to rebuilding a complete staircase to its original detail and everything in between.

My absolute and uncompromised attention is given to your painting project at all times.

Doesn’t get any better than Excel painting. Bill, Rafo and Ryan, are all the nicest, most professional painters around. They are easy to work with, easy to communicate with, reliable, and best of all, amazing at painting. I actually was disappointed to see them leave.

Bill and his team of painters did an amazing job giving our Dolores Heights home a contemporary, fresh look. I was a pretty indecisive about colors, and Bill was extremely patient and willing to try different color combinations and small changes in shades until we found the perfect solution for our home. His team also did an amazing job bringing our beautiful wood deck back to life after many years of neglect. Our neighbors are still complimenting us on how great our home looks. Bill McKeever and his very professional staff did an amazing job on our 100+ year old 4 story home. We felt that we could completely turn the project over to Excel Painting without having to manage it or even think about it. As an old building, we had a few vents that needed removed and the wood replaced. His team did this seamlessly with the new paint job. They also noticed flashing that needed replaced above the windows and took care of that– they see the restoration needs of these old Edwardians and take care of the job. We’ll never have anyone up on the fourth floor exterior again– now is the only time to deal with these issues.
This is a company for a paint job that will last for decades – The prep work was thorough – and it’s all about prep when it comes to a paint job. He uses 2 top coats after thoroughly priming. All product purchases were handled by Bill after we gave him our color choices– and only top quality products.
His staff was very professional, punctual and left the property spotless after each work day. The job was finished in the designated time with minimal impact on us and our neighbors.
Best yet– with 4 stories of scaffolding up, the team washed the windows inside and out.
We will be rehiring them for any further projects.

They start and finish a job in the time period that has been estimated. They painted the outside of my house a couple of years ago and just finished a big job of interior painting. Bill is a true pro. He and his crew recently painted the exterior of my 100 year-​old craftsman house in SF, and they did a fantastic job. A good paint job is all about the prep … and ours needed quite a bit. Bill and his crew are extremely thorough and they do not cut corners like some of the other painters I got bids from who suggested tinted primer + only 1 top coat. He uses quality primers, paints and two top coats (Kelly Moore). As some of the other reviewers noted, Bill has a great sense of color and he made a few recommendations on slightly adjusting the color scheme I had selected. I am so happy with the final result, and I would highly recommend considering Excel for your next job.

Bill McKeever and his team did an amazing paint/​mudding job on our condo in San Francisco. Bill had a challenging task set in front of him, including fixing the messy paint job done by the contractor before him, and in an incredibly short amount of time. Bill was incredibly professional and did an extremely impeccable job on short notice and under challenging circumstances. The walls were perfectly smooth with straight lines and he did a fantastic job with our cabinets as well.
Bill was communicative and responsive throughout the process, and was truly a pleasure to work with. Very high quality paint job and attention to detail. His crew was great as well.
We give him the highest recommendation and would definitely work with him in the future.

Bill and team did a wonderful job painting the living room, master bedroom, kitchen, and hallways of our 1921 home. Due to its age, the walls had many cracks that needed to be filled, as well as layers of wallpaper that had to be stripped. We wanted true professionals to provide the expertise and craftsmanship needed to properly restore it, and Excel did not disappoint! Also, Bill brought us several paint samples based on the palette we discussed and recommend the perfect color for our kitchen. We love it!

It was a pleasure to work with Bill. We scheduled the repainting of the entire upstairs of the house during a trip. He took care of everything and we came back to an impeccable like-​new house. Very neat, attention to detail (placement of art work etc…), straight lines, a high quality paint job.

We had Bill and his team remove the many years of old wallpaper, replaster and then paint the front rooms. In addition, we had them sand and paint the wood framing. Cabinets, doors, etc were always very precisely sanded and painted; hinges and other items were never over painted. They did a great job of covering all items and not a scratch or drop of paint got onto the hardwood floors. Every time Bill made a commitment, it was delivered to perfectly; he and his team would show up precisely as scheduled and work was done to a very high standard at all times.

Based on the positive reviews here I emailed Bill six weeks ago to try to get an estimate for a time-​sensitive job — he emailed back once to ask where the house was, but after repeated attempts to contact him I haven’t received any further response. Can’t speak to the quality of his work obviously, but would not recommend.

I highly recommend excel painting, Bill did a great job recommending colors as well. I wanted an accent wall that popped from the rest of my living room for an open office area and Bill recommended the perfect color. The workmanship done by Bill’s crew is also excellent, small dents, knicks and holes in the wall were repaired and properly painted over. The attention to detail is also excellent, you won’t regret using Bill’s team. All the small touches you expect from expert painters are provided by Bills team, great edging, clean lines and timely work. I would hire Bill again in a heartbeat.

My husband and I hired Bill to paint the interior of our new house. Bill was very patient with us as we decided on colors, and very accommodating of our tight timeline and work schedules.
Bill made sure that we liked the colors we chose and even did a second coat of paint in a different color when we didn’t like the way the first coat turned out. When the movers scraped up some of the freshly painted walls, Bill came back promptly and touched up the damage so that it looks like new. We would highly recommend him!

Bill and his painters did a really incredible job with my office. Its a Victorian space with 11′ tall ceilings and miles or trim and it looks amazing! Also, I have to mention that Bill was really great to work with. Totally professional, quick to respond and upfront about all the costs. He was also very kind and respectful and gave me a more than fair price. I will recommend Excel Painting to everyone and I know and will totally use their services again.

Bill and his crew did an excellent job painting the interior walls of my house. I was on a budget and a very limited time schedule and he was able to work with me to get me exactly what I wanted. He also took the time to help me pick out colors for my walls which was great since this was my first time really picking out colors and I was worried about picking a color that I would end up hating. His crew was very professional and they left everything clean and in great shape. Highly recommended!

Excel recently finished painting the exterior of our 1890’s Victorian house in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of SF. They did an excellent job, and overall we are extremely pleased with the outcome.
Additionally, the level of attention given to the prep process (the most important part of any paint job) was great. The front façade is south-​facing, and was in serious need of some TLC. They stripped most of the paint off down to the bare wood, and the caulk job was also impressive!
Bill helped us with the paint color selection and layout process too. The final outcome is great, and shows off all of the Victorian trim detail on the house.
Lastly, I can not say enough great things about his crew. The guys were so hard-​working, thorough, and conscientious — very apparent that they care a lot about the final outcome.

I highly recommend Bill McKever and Excel Painting! I recently remodeled my kitchen and laundry room in an old Victorian that had decades of paint layered on original wood detailing. Bill took ownership of the job and made sure things were done right, which is especially important with old homes where you don’t know what you’ll find when you look behind the walls!
Bill is a craftsman and professional, but friendly and easy to work with. He kept me informed of any problems along the way, was easily reachable by phone, always on time and followed through with what he promised. The work was high quality at a reasonable price. I would use Excel again for any future projects.
