Food Fair Market

They have everything compacted into one little store wine beer snacks reasonable prices compared to the stores around the area. Craft beers Cali wines hummus crackers chips you name it highly recommended !

Terrible customer service. Spent hundred of dollars here while on vacation because they are conveniently right across the street, and mulitple times myself and my friends with treated poorly. Im now giving my business to the deli & liquor store down stairs under the tunnel.

I have been vehicularly challenged since April 21. I’m not going to lie, it has been a bit of a sh*t show. I have no agency over my comings and goings. My schedule is at the mercy of public transportation. I have had my freedom seriously curtailed. In other news, my lack of a vehicle now makes takeout a must-​do on most nights, as it is often difficult for me to walk to a grocery store to get what I need. Not healthy.
That’s why I was so stoked to find FFM. First of all, it’s just a hop, skip and a jump from my office in the FiDi. Of course, please be advised that it’s a hop, skip and a jump totally uphill, however (read: heels are not your friend here, ladies).
Second, I was able to get most of my shopping list taken care of here. Red peppers? Check. Vine-​ripened tomatoes? Check. Sourdough bread? You got it. Everything bagels? Yessir. Snobby beer? Indeed. Organic brown eggs? Yeppers.
Third, FFM has a pretty great beer and wine selection for what it is. I wasn’t going to get beer because I didn’t want to haul it home, but I couldn’t resist getting a six pack of Pilsner Urquell. You know it kicks ass in the bottle (versus on tap), and with this lovely weather we’ve been enjoying, a pilsner definitely hits the spot.
Obviously I was super excited to find this spot, but I’ll note there are a few drawbacks. Again, it’s up the hill for me. It also attracts tourists due to its Union Square, top-​of-​the-​tunnel location. No offense tourists, but you’ve seen a grocery store before. Let’s move it along. It was also a little pricy, but what the hell – you’re just getting the staples here, hopefully. Super convenient location in an area utterly bereft of grocery stores? I’ll drink a pilsner to that!

I have tried and TRIED to be forgiving, especially since this place is just across from my apartment. So convenient, but I can’t stand how rude the owner is to me. I’m a clean, hardworking, cash paying customer who’s shopped there a number of times in the last couple years. Yet, he always acts standoffish like I have no right to be in his space.
George is the reason I avoid this store and go out of my way to shop elsewhere, even when I just need one little thing.
I guess he gets enough foot traffic to make the money no matter how horribly he treats his fellow human being. I just take what comfort I can in knowing that he’ll have his comeuppance one day.

The clerks that work here are nice guys, especially to regulars. They deal with a lot numbskulls passing through (and some of spillover HH crowd from Tunnel Top) so that’s why they may seem short at first.
Produce: Solid average. They’ll get a good batch of apples every once in awhile. They have a lot the staples (onions, garlic, shallots, etc.). They surprisingly have a nice array of cheeses.
They have a reasonably decent beer selection including 21^st Amendment. Don’t expect a good deal though, even on Coors or Bud.
The drink aisle also has some good stuff. It’s catered to hotels/​tourists than actual residents. All in all, a decent corner store.

When I first moved in the ‘hood I was excited when I found this spot so near my new place. They seemed to have what I was looking for, even if things were nearly out of date, the bread selection was pitiful, and things seemed a bit overprice. The convenience was super I kept telling myself. I really wanted to like this place. Really. The younger guy (sorry forgot his name?) seemed friendly the few times I went in, and we chatted during the week day mornings.
This past weekend I officially moved my furniture in, and it was a bit warm in the city, so I stopped in for some water with a local friend. When I walked in, my friend hesitated near the door, and I noticed the owner staring at him. I joked with the owner that we were just stopping in to grab a few waters and he said, «Well then get them and get out» I said, «What did you just say»?? He said «You heard me» So I was now dehyradting in front of the man, and about to have a meltdown. So I reminded him «Well, ya know I don’t need to buy my water here after all» and he told me, «Then get out» all the while staring at my friend really, more than me. I was in shock, and still am how that happened. The word bizarre comes to mind. Welcome to the neighborhood I thought.
Read the other reviews, the place seems to have been friendly years ago when they first opened. In between those, also read the ones where people say the man was rude. There are several here, it wasn’t just me who found him churlish. This place seems to cater to tourists on vacation, or the affluent of Nob Hill who don’t mind overpaying a few dollars for wine and cheese. My friend later told me the guy once told him he smelled bad, so he thought he was homeless ! Now I understand why he was staring at him. Stand against prejudice ! Unite ! I’m so angry I want to form a picket line until his business crawls to a stand still, or he apologizes to my friend.
Read my other reviews. I have Never given one star. I always try to find the good and give the benefit of the doubt. Apparently he must be making so much money there he can insult customers in this manner for no reason. I would not stop here again if I was coming from the desert, dying of thirst. I would go up the hill to the next market !

This place is right around the corner from my apartment, and I end up here at least a couple times a week. Their prices are pretty consistent with other corner stores in the area. They actually have a lot in stock despite the size. I’m always amazed at what I can find when I really don’t want to walk to Walgreen’s or Trader Joe’s. The guys who work here are super friendly too.

Great selection of food — packaged and fresh! Gourmet and cheetos! — wine, beer, spirits, and drug store items. Friendly service. Open late.

came back 3 times in a day for champagne and blunts and barely even felt judged by the clerk. pretty decent selection i might add for a liqua’sto.

This is literally on the way to my friend’s house from work! So in a pinch, when I need to pick up some hard alcohol, this will do. Prices are not super cheap. I believe I paid about $ 25 for a half bottle of Grey goose, but for the area, it’s not super expensive either. Will probably stop by again for the convenience.

This is a neat little store that is super close to the tunnel but still extremely clean inside.
The sushi they sell at this store is prepared fresh daily and it is really good (for store prepared sushi).
I was surprised that the prices are so reasonable — even for wine.
They have a decent selection including a very little known Pinot that I adore (it’s called Hand Craft).
I couldn’t believe that the price of this wine was the same as I would have paid anywhere else and not seriously jacked up because of the store location.
Another little secret… this is like the foreign food aisle in Cost Plus. Tons of English biscuits, foreign sweets and candies AND get this… they sell Nag Champa Incense for .99 cents!
That is cheaper than anywhere else that I have ever purchased incense.

Food Fair rules because of their cheese selection. You know how if you go to Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods, you can buy a wedge of cheese, but it’s way too much for one person, and you really wanted to have like, three different kinds, but then your total is going to be $ 20 and most of it is going to go bad? Well, Food Fair solves this problem. I have never seen cheese sold in such small cuts, but it is SO convenient! I have picked up a nice selection of 4 or 5 cheeses, salami, grapes and a bottle of wine from there and had a nice evening in with my BF. You can try quite a few different kinds of cheeses and not spend much money at Food Fair and I love that.

I went here to stock up on food for my boyfriend’s fridge and didn’t know any better that in order to buy really fresh quality food I’d have to walk up the peninsula towards Chinatown or take the bus to Costco or Safeway. Plus this place is only a block away from the apartment.
Anyway, I came in looking for cans of food like soup or canned peaches and each can cost me $ 3.50! I was like, wtf? Bananas looked fresh so I took 3 home and they turned brown within 2 days and were overly ripe. That never happens to really fresh bananas so obviously the bananas I bought here weren’t so fresh. Hmmm…
½ gallon milk expiration date was 5 days from the day I bought it. Buying it at Walgreens I would actually get a guarantee of at least 14 days.
Never coming in here ever again.
I’ve learned to take the extra trip to Costco or walking to Chinatown for fresh fruit/​vegetables.

I stayed across the street from the Food Fair Market at the Wyndham Worldmark during my five day visit to SF. I think I must have visited this store at least twice every day. They have just about EVERYTHING you need as a tourist. The wine selection is bountiful as is their beer and rest of the beverages (no need to name the remaining types of drinks, those don’t matter). Oh, but what does matter is the fact that they have every alcohol imaginable. I’m not a hard liquor consumer but they even had OUZO?!
They also had a small grocery sections with fresh fruits and veggies. I had some of their «sushi» rolls (which I believe is delivered by a restaurant in Oakland) and it wasn’t great by restaurant standards but it did the trick. They also have ice cream, frozen foods, yogurts, deli meats… need I say more?
This place is great and I’m so glad that it was there for me to purchase during our numerous beer and wine nights.

This is a decent local market. They have the basics and that is it. The guys that work there are friendly enough. It would be nice if they had a ATM machine but there is one across the street at the laundromat.

I stop in here quite often for smokes and sometimes for smokes and some beer. I do not really do any other shopping there.

As I ease into my new neighborhood, I’m trying to find spots that are more or less the equivelent of places in my old neighborhood. I’m not sure that I’ve found my Gordo’s yet, or even my Blarney Stone (though Chelsea Place just might be it), but I think I’ve found my Martell’s.
Food Fair Market isn’t nearly as large as Martell’s and is slightly more expensive, but it makes up for that in selection and friendliness. There’s a decent selection of fresh produce, interesting snacks (Kettle Chips, Pirate’s Booty) and a surprising variety of kitty litter on hand, not just Jonny Cat. They might not have Bandit wine, but they do have a $ 3.99 bottle that’s not bad (I don’t remember the name, but it has a beige label — what can I say, I’m cheap). Toss in a penchant for rounding up the change and a knack for knowing their regular customers, I’m glad to say this makes leaving the old neighborhood slightly less painful. 4.5 stars.

For a corner market, this place is stocked with all the necessities plus some quality extras. They know their demographic and offer a variety of great items at decent prices, considering they’re a small shop. I’ve always had great interactions with the staff who are friendly. Plus, the shop is always clean and they seem to work with a lot of local vendors.
RUNDOWN
Produce: all the basics plus things like parsley, cilantro, zucchini and seasonal fruit. Always fresh.
Prepared Foods: Mas Empanadas (freaking delicious!) plus an array of other locally made international foods– sushi, pirogies, etc.
Frozen Foods: Anything from Amy’s Organic to Stouffers and most of the basic frozen veggies. Small selection but decent choices.
Dairy: They carry organic and regular brands of milk, eggs, cheese, etc. PLUS, they have some great cheese selections in the prepared foods area including things like blue, goat, havarti, feta, etc.
Canned/​Dry goods: All your baking needs, nice cereal selection, canned food basics, salad dressings, mac and cheese and even spices.
Booze: Fair selection, decent variety of champagne to compliment the OJ!
Toiletries/​OTCs: All the basics– toothbrushes, toothpaste, tampons, pain killers, anti-​inflammatories, antihistamines, cold medicines, cough suppressants, antacids, etc.
Snack Foods: Aplenty– from kettle chips to hostess cupcakes.
ETC: They also carry some office supplies and cleaning products
This store has been a life saver for me time and time again. The other corner stores within a 2 block radius can’t beat the selection.

+1 for being clean all the time
+1 for always having what I need at the last minute
+1 for having reasonable prices
+1 for a fantastic location
+10 for ALWAYS being friendly to me. Even when I come in sick and need a gallon of OJ. Or when I am a little tipsy and want another bottle of champagne. Or that one time when I was missing my front tooth (seriously).
What more could a girl want in a corner store?

Gayle and I were walking back from Kung Pao Kosher Comedy and decided to walk above the Stockton Tunnel rather than through it. We were looking for a bottle of wine to take back to the hotel and stumbled upon the Food Fair Market.
I don’t think were in here long enough to form a full opinion of this market. This may truly be a one-​stop shopping experience for what seems like a very well-​run corner store.
I thought they had an extensive wine selection for a market of this size and we easily found something we liked. The guy at the counter was pleasant and we were on our way in no time.
