Green Zebra provides «Local Savings for Sustainable Living.» The guides include hundreds of discounts and upgrades on a wide variety of eco-friendly products and services from local green businesses. The book was created for busy people looking for help in making more conscious purchasing decisions. In these challenging economic times, Green Zebra makes it affordable for people to continue supporting their values and their community. Aside from being sold on their website and in dozens of retail stores throughout San Francisco and the Peninsula, the guide is also used by hundreds of schools and non-profit organizations as a lucrative healthy alternative to traditional fundraising products.

History

Established in 2006.

The first Green Zebra guide was released in 2006, before the word «sustainability» was part of most people’s vocabulary. Company Co-founders created the guide to make it fun and easy for busy consumers to explore environmentally-friendly products and services available in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now in its third year, the guide promotes local, independent and green businesses, and has been used by hundreds of schools and non profits as a healthy risk free fundraiser. Editions have been created for San Francisco, Marin County, the Peninsula/Silicon Valley, and Vancouver (BC), and new ones are being developed with strategic partners in other regions. In 2008 Green Zebra won Acterra’s Business Environmental Award for Environmental and Sustainability Education, and became a certified San Francisco Green Business powered by the sun. We use 3Degrees to offset our carbon footprint.

Green Zebra Co-founders, Anne Fisher Vollen and Sheryl Cohen became long time friends while traveling the world together as bankers just out of college. Driven by their passion for sustainable-living and supporting local green businesses, the two women teamed up to create a full-time project which turned into the successful Green Zebra savings guides we know today.

This really an enchanted place, a jewel of green movements found surprisingly in the heart of the financial district, at the Galleria. Green Zebra is known for the famous coupon book that one founder — Anne put together.
First I didn’t know this is the place. I just realized that in the austere store, there are a lot of hidden jewels of local artist necklaces, wallets, postcards, clothing accessories, you name it. I almost had to take a step out to make sure I was at the right place, since the store is in the middle of luxurious shopping center.
Store staff is quiet but very knowledgeable and friendly once you start the conversation. My friend and I lingered for a long time admiring the variety of art works created by SF artists: we bought this unique wallet for business cards (by Heathered with an unique SF style), a dragon/dinosaur hat that has mohawk like head piece, local honey, and equal exchange chai (i wish they have my favorite earl grey and the fabulous milk chocolate!)
It is my saddest discovery that this store will close out soon. T_T They will be moving away from a physical store front in january.

Green Zebra rocks! I came across this non-profit when I checked in at the Galleria Farmer’s Market on Unilocal and got a pop up deal for a free reusable farmer’s market tote bag, retrievable at the Green Zebra Environmental Action Center. I walked in and the girl at the front (Christina) was so friendly! She let me know what they were all about and gave me a little tour of their shop. I bought some great reusable produce bags for my weekly trip to the farmers market. They also sell local treats (olive oil, honey) and sell accessories made out of recycled materials and clothing made out of organic cotton. However, they do soooooo much more than just sell items, and the items sold help them to achieve their ultimate mission. They host power hours once a month and for an hour they focus on an environmental topic. The most recent one was a cooking demo that involved raw kale salad and kale smoothies. They have guest speakers come in to talk to you about composting, etc. They show documentaries, such as «Lunch Line», a movie which focused on our school food/lunch system and really gave you the behind the scene details. I always learn something useful and fascinating from these events and learn about ways to be a better environmental steward. Best of all, if you are one of the first 20 to RSVP than you get a free lunch, and sometimes they have vegan options!
By far the coolest role that they play is as a recycling center. On their website they list what types of items they take, such as batteries, toners, cell phones, glasses, etc. They make sure that they stay out of the landfills and reuse what they can. Having worked in the e-waste and recycling field in Portland, Oregon, and then moving to the Bay Area to find a similar non-profit, I know how few places exist that will accept your old electronics and keep those toxins out of the landfills FOR FREE.
Come here to buy sustainable products, to learn some amazing new things at their power hour (and to eat a free lunch!), and to dispose of your old electronics and items that contain toxins and or/can be responsibly recycled. Support the cause!

I didn’t even realize this place was something other than a retail shop for green goodies, but it’s great! Great selection and decent/standard prices for really great eco-friendly wares. From cute bags and jewelry to bottles and lunch containers. I even got a set of reusable produce bags that made me embarrassingly excited.

I came here to redeem my free reusable tote bag for checking into Crocker Galleria. Little did I know that this is also an official recycling center for electronics. I saw an Amazon Kindle that had a broken screen. There is also a bunch of other electronic goods that people have dropped off because they are dysfunctional. There are some eco-friendly goods sold here like water bottles, clothing, bags, cards, gifts, etc. The mayor (I think her name is Anne) on foursquare helped me and she was really nice.

I’m no green preacher screaming from upon high about the virtues of saving the planet… but I am a frugal consumer. From that point of view, this little book it a steal. For $ 25 you get a coupon book that will pay for itself in about two coupons (there are loads of ‘2 for 1′ restaurant deals inside). The selection of vendors that have coupons in the book is extensive and pretty good. Worth getting for the savings alone.

Professional and courteous, their books were a hit amongst our crowds at our 2008 Lockheed Martin Environmental Fair in Sunnyvale. I am so happy to have stumbled upon their listing so I can now leave them a fantastic review!
I can personally say that I used their coupons on multiple occasions for Bay Area businesses. And as another reviewer mentioned, it’s super-easy to earn back the cost of the giant coupon book after just a couple of purchases. Hey, there are probably coupons in there for places you already visit anyways!

Just made an awesome investment in this book of savings. It’s full of coupons on organic restaurants, eco-friendly products, yoga and fitness, spas, cultural activities, AND getaways.
I don’t usually buy coupon books because I tend to forget about them, and the spending requirements are a little crazy. Save $ 10 on $ 200 when I normally wouldn’t have spent $ 200. But looking at this book [which will last through the rest of 2009], there are a ton of coupons that I know I would use or that my friends would use! And it doesn’t take much to get the $ 25 you spent back.
Examples of savings include: Free breakfast at Sellers Market, free breakfast at La Boulange, buy one yoga class and get one free at multiple yoga studios citywide, Zipcar savings, free coffee at Philz.
I easily have made back the $ spent on the book already, and it’s been a week.
Those are just a few… There are 175+ coupons in the book. There’s a monthly newsletter to sign up for AND a mobile program too. When you sign up, Green Zebra will email or text you when new savings/coupons come up, and you can just show the vendor your phone for the savings. A portion of 2009’s Green Zebra guide proceeds benefits Graze the Roof, an edible, community-produced vegetable garden on the rooftop at Glide Foundation. I just think it’s pretty neat. As part of a thank you for doing some volunteer work for Sustainable San Mateo County, a local non-profit whose aim is to increase education on the facts of how sustainable our lifestyles are (or aren’t) I got one of these Green Zebra coupon books at one of their community meetings.
I’d never heard of them before but I wish I had. The coupons inside are great. Two of them for shopping at Whole Foods will recoup $ 20 of the $ 25 cover price right away. My book has 2x $ 10 off an order of $ 50 (if you can leave Whole Foods without spending $ 50 on groceries you must be shoplifting). There are many other coupons in there that offer savings on things I actually want.
More than just the savings though, they also serve as a directory for local businesses that are trying to be more eco-sensitive. Now, it isn’t clear to me how the businesses are selected, so I think people should still use their judgment, but it’s still helpful seeing who is in there.
Even though my first one was a freebie, I think I’m in with the win-win value proposition and will probably buy myself a new Green Zebra when the new edition comes out.

This is a 5-star slam dunk. The Green Zebra guide pays for itself in a happy, healthy heartbeat… In the SF guide (they also have GZ for the Peninsula & Marin), I love the buy 1 get 1 free at Philz Coffee (the best coffee ever, IMO), free breakfast from La Boulange, 2-for-1 at Lettus/The Plant, 20% savings at Green Apple Books, free soak at the Kabuki Hot Springs, yoga/pilates/massage discounts, and on and on. …
Not only is it a great source of discounts, it’s also chock full of helpful and useful info on how to live a greener/more eco-friendly life. Since I try to eat only sustainable or organic, the GZ Guide has helped me find out which restaurants around town are serving food with no growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, etc.
Plus I feel its important to patronize businesses whose values reflect my own, so it helps to learn about which companies in SF have become part of the Green Business Program.
And for accuracy purposes, Unilocaler Wes F. may have made a minor error in saying that 100% of proceeds are donated… I believe a portion of each guide’s purchase price is donated to «Graze the Roof», a community vegetable garden on the roof at Glide. WOW.
Great idea, great cause, great guide !! So save some green by buying the Green Zebra.

I love using my Green Zebra guide! I like the places that they offer discounts at– especially Yield, Greens, and Lettus. It is hard to remember to bring the coupons with you, so I usually tear them out and stick the ones I will most likely use in my wallet. Then I have it ready when I happen upon a Green Zebra store/restaurant. I also like how they donate to different non-profits. It is a win win situation. And I learned on their website that they do a Green calendar with comcast– how rad!

A friend told me about The Green Zebra and I’ve been a believer ever since!!! At first, you might not want to dish out $ 25 on a book of coupons, but trust me: this book pays for itself and then some. All the proceeds go back into the community (good for the community!) and you get amazing discounts while discovering new places in the city (good for you!), AND you’re living a more conscious, socially responsible lifestyle (good for the planet!!) Every major area in the US should have a Green Zebra guide.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to find cool new places in the Bay Area, while saving money, and «living green». What more could you want!!!

For $ 25, this book of coupons can get you thousands of dollars in discounts at sustainable /organic /socially responsible businesses. Everything from restaurants to groceries to pet food.
Another great thing about this is that 100% of the proceeds are put back into the community, and I believe the two people who put it together don’t take a dime of income. Last year alone, Green Zebra raised $ 40,000 for local schools.
It’s a great investment for a good cause.

Green Zebra has provided tons of savings for me and my family during the busy holiday seasons, and also for everyday activities. I’ve found the personnel to be helpful and friendly; also full of ideas on how to «live green», on a day-to-day basis.
** I REALLY recommend investing the $ 25 on this book; not only will your $ come back in the form of savings, but you will save triple that with the big selection of businesses in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. Coupon books DO COST money, and $ 25 to live a healthier, «green» lifestyle (with discounts!) is not asking too much… at least not to me. I would gladly support Green Zebra and all the businesses included in the coupon book without hesitation.

During a holiday gift swap last year, I received a copy of the Green Zebra guide and it’s been a great way to explore some new businesses and save some money at places I already go. The $ 25 it pays for itself pretty quickly, especially if you’re using it for some of the more high end services, like spa treatments. I’ve used it at Sports Basement, Samovar, Kabuki and International Orange. I just saw the 2008 edition is out and it’s a good gift for all your eco-friendly friends who don’t need more «stuff» but still go out to dinner, buy groceries, frequent museums, etc.

i discovered this book at the 2006 green festival… i just purchased my second one at the 2007 green fest today. last years book saved me hundreds of dollars and has introduced me to some restaurants and businesses that i might never have tried otherwise.
yes — it’s $ 25, but listen — if you shop at organic markets in san francisco, you will make your money back and more in your first couple of shopping trips out. many of these «coupons» are the equivalent to gift certificates and don’t require any other purchase — or even a minimum purchase… (like the free meal at medicine for example… or the $ 20 of free groceries at rainbow).
plus — the proceeds go to kids and greening up their public school environments.
if you are even thinking about patronizing any organic or green business establishments in san francisco, this book is like free money.

I think it is great that most local businesses are trying to corner the green market. Not only is it responsible, but it encourages the entire industry to look at what they can do to become more eco-conscious and at the same time profitable. Unfortunately, I believe ‘The Green Zebra Guide’ is just a band wagon jumper.
‘The Green Zebra Guide’ is supposed to be a local (San Francisco & North Bay I believe.) guide to green businesses, and includes coupons for all the businesses listed.
Sounds interesting right? Well, for $ 25, you can own this coupon book and browse to see which green businesses Green Zebra has decided to include. You see, not everyone that is notably green is included.
Because they are charging an exorbitant amount for their book of coupons, they are only including those that offer a «good enough» coupon for their book.
I work for one of the company’s that they approached to be included in their booklet. I spent several (meaning a few hours a week for over a month.) hours communicating with this company.
Green Zebra was at first pleased with our offer, and was very excited to have our type of business included in their coupon book (no other businesses of my company’s type were interested, or, as one of the assistants put it «good enough» to be included in the book. Since they ultimately did not accept our offer, there are no businesses of our type in the book.). Then, the owner of the company (Sheryl) called me and started pushing me to offer more than we already had. In services and products, we were willing to offer up to $ 200 in savings. I have never had someone be so confrontational and defensive while trying to solicit us to do business with them. Dude, just wanted to get my company in your coupon book! A month passes and I am sent a blanket ‘thanks but no thanks’ email.
So, if you are a green business and Green Zebra comes to you to be included ‘at no cost to you’ in their booklet, remember to consider that the ‘no cost’ included hours and hours of communication which at the end of, they may or may not include you– I feel ripped off.
Plus, I have a real hard time with creating another disposable product that wastes paper and adds clutter to the world to advertise for the green marketplace.
If you are just looking for discounts, I would suggest becoming a member of
. They will send you a wide variety of discounts available in your area during that week or month, and it doesn’t create any real world clutter. I noticed that they have a lot of the same coupons available that the ‘Green Zebra Guide’ offers at no cost to you. Happy discount shopping!
